This is one of the best River interviews in my opinion. A person of the more innocent kind, however, with great light oft comes great shadow. He will be always missed.
This is just heartbreaking. It's very evident from this interview that he was very intelligent, very articulate, and a very kind and sensitive person with a sense of humor. Not to mention, so handsome. It's really sad that he died so young.
First off, Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, and Brad Pitt were all 7-8 years older than River. Out of those 3, Tom Cruise was the only really well established actor at the time of River's death. And you obviously haven't seen many of River's movies, he was just as every bit as good of an actor as those three, if not better. When he died he had numerous offers for multiple roles, and James Cameron even admitted to initially wanting River to play Jack in Titanic. River was a good actor, that's all.
I didn't think the questions were "dumb" at all. It's obvious this interviewer is sincerely interested in getting to know him, and I think she did a good job of bringing him out. He seemed guarded at the start, but you can see him relax and become engaged with the interviewer as he adds more and more detail to his answers.
I think he was just nervous in this video, he always seemed quite shy and reserved. I am also shy, I suffer from social phobia, and when I talk to new people, I usually think of what to say, start to stutter, not keep eye contact, use my hands to ''speak'', and basically just struggle to get my words out. He basically reminds me of me, when talking to people who I am not comfortable with.
He's so sweet with her. And she seems like a very professional journalist. Most celebrity journalists try to corner and bully them and then mock them after. They are usually a sordid pathetic bunch who are probably jealous of their fortune, but they have sadly ruined reputations in the process.
River radiates a eternal energy. .. a euphoria. river is exceptional. sureal. captivating. .. he had a white aura, .. ambience in the dark. river is light. magnetic.hypnotic... timless. eternal... forever... and ever
He was a beautiful soul and an intelligent 17 yr old in this interview this is lovely and I loved him then and I miss him still it would be amazing to see him at 40 something I think he would be amazingly insightful with the wisdom age gives you
I was raised around drug addicts. There is absolutely no way he's high as hell. High as hell would be him comatose on the floor. I found him to be quite intelligent, lucid, and in touch with his emotions. If anything, he's the opposite as high as hell. He couldn't be more sober. Likely more sober than the rest of us, when he was alive. What an inspiration. His light was too bright for this place.
it's weird, to feel such love and respect for someone you've never met and never will meet. As flea said, -"River was the smartest and kindest person i ever known in my life".
I was thinking that, too. He was so smart and articulate, it's easy to forget how very young he was. He only lived to 23, and was even much younger here, giving really insightful answers.
Exactly, for god sakes. Its amazing how ppl who dont actually know the real signs of hard drug abuse and go around making these loose comments all the time. I know what amphetamines feel like and look , I know what opiates feel like and look like. Have you seen that old John Frusciante video? Now that a person that's as high as a Mofo.
See what you mean , with him being so young and vulnerable looking in this clip you want to look after him! Some people who are naturally of a serious disposition are quite happy in themselves. So endearing - he could've had a smug smirk on his face ,but no , appears totally sweet. R.I.P.
Look, you can believe whatever you want to believe about him. But from experience being around drug addicts and having experimented with HARD drugs myself - I know this IS NOT the face of someone on hard drugs. For all we know that very night he went out and got high as a kite but in this interview he is NOT. I know he had a problem, a serious one. I now he hid it well but its a fact that he was secretive about it. His MOPI interview - there he is high as hell for sure.
High as hell? I think not. He is very thoughtful, present, receptive and articulate here. He may have smoked a joint for all we know - but to think he is "high as hell" is totally erroneous and ridiculous. YT users who are always commenting on "how high he" in this or that video is only perpetuating more lies - he was not a regular drug user.
The tradegy of this, in seeing this great interview, is seeing so loud and clear the potential for greatness this young man had. It's unfortunate that fame can attract hanger-oners that just want to party... and suck you right into their dark underworld. They can eventually make you feel immortal, especially when you are young and feel that way already. I wish his true friends wold have been around him, to influence him, instead of the demons that watched him die. Rest in peace River.
If your a fan of River Pheonix, check out a song dedicated to him by Natalie Merchant called River. Read the lyrics, they're amazing. Like my comment after you hear it to see how many checked it out. Your welcome
He was also suppose to be in the film "Interview With A Vampire", which starred Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. So I'm pretty sure he was going to be in that group of up and coming 90's actors. Don't for get my favorite, Leo DiCaprio.
I love River Phoenix!!!!!!, and i love it his movies especially in the film "stand by my" .he was a beautiful boy!!!!!!!!! River Phoenix for ever!!!!!!!
OMG I m sure that the interviewer was dying to kiss him!the first look is so sexi His job in "Running on empty" is just amazing..he died too young but I m sure that he would be a great actor..I m wondering if Leonardo Di Caprio would be Leonardo Di Caprio if River had been alive..because the rol for Titanic was for him!ibut thank God we have his movies to remember him and know that in the planet existed a guy called River Phoenix that gone too soon..sorry for mi english!kisses from Argentina!
Heavy drug users can present all the qualities you list there, look at a lot of musicians. One look at his face says it all, and even his close friends and family publicly admit he had a large drug habit (ask will wheaton for one). Don't be deceived. He was a great talent, and had beautiful qualities, but he grew up in a cult of sexual abuse, had psychological conflicts and lost his life to drugs.
This is the first time I ever saw this interview, I was only a few years younger than him and I thought he was fabulous. The world was a sadder place when he passed away. None of us knew him or can pretend to know him, but my heart goes to juaquin and his whole family. because he was so talented and had so much in his future he was taken way too soon regardless of the reason why he's still gone:(
he looks so shy ahhh so cute! and his eyes, why he always looks so uhm sleepy?... and tired? and is it because he does not really laugh or what that he always look a little sad to me...
just a thought - river was kind of reserved/shy as a person. the way he's talking in this reminds me of me when i'm just talking normally. i'm not even against drugs, i'm just offering that perspective.
He was still young and i believe he would have moved on up the latter had be survived. He was a good actor, and was soon to be great, had he been in more movies. You are probably just a jealous guy cause he looks better than you...I'm a 38 yr old straight guy that had the privilege of meeting him back in '92 and can say he was a very nice guy..
God he was beautiful!! I love watching him in everything! I know he hated doing interviews, he always looks soo uncomfortable in every interview I've seen him do. I'm sure he hated the ridiculous questions theyd ask when he knew there was sooo many more important things going on in the world that were not talked about. I wish sooo badly that he was still here, there was sooo much left for him to do!! R.I.P. River
I agree with you. I don't see him high as a kite here. He was doing press interviews for the movie. Isn't there one with Martha Plimpton on the same day, I think it was morning. Plus it was known that River went to bed late, and liked playing guitar all night. Sure he did hard drugs but I don't think that he was drugged here.
i can see alot of people don't know what there talking about when it comes to another person especially a particularly talented person like river to many people talk with jealousy and first of all johny depp first movie was nightmare on elm street and he was around 20 or 21 playing a 17yr. old role river was 15 and a damn good actor
Listen sweetheart, you clearly cant understand metaphors .... I was referring to his dark experiences in the business that is Hollywood not his addictions. So before you start spewing your negativity in inappropriate places - check yourself. And please get some healing for your serious misplaced anger issues.
Did anyone else notice he doesn't look like any of his siblings? Joaquin and Summer look so much alike, but they don't look like him.
Looking really 90s in the 80s
Wow I can't believe he's 17, he's such a wise, intelligent and articulate young man.
his voice is so soothing
The pressures of providing for a family at 14, then becoming such a huge star. Tragic loss.
This is just heartbreaking. It's very evident from this interview that he was very intelligent, very articulate, and a very kind and sensitive person with a sense of humor. Not to mention, so handsome. It's really sad that he died so young.
How could you not be in love with him after watching this.
he seemed to be deep and innocent and genuine.. most of the guys i know of his age are just empty idiots
what beautiful face,hair,voice and soul,we lost a gift.💜💜😢
In the interview you can see he is very innocent and at the same time very honest.
he is only 17 and he is answering questions adults would stumble on. Okay!
ahh his beaaaauuuutiful blonde hair, soft voice, deep eyes and kind personality.... ahh perfect

He's really insightful and so articulated i love it when people talks and you can feel their passion about what they do.
Compare this interview to an interview with Justin Bieber when he was 17.. Insane... River is so honest and real and intelligent.
God if I could go back in time.. rest in heaven baby
joaquin phoenix brother he looks different from his brother both talented as hell

He is such an angel. I love him so much!😘

You know what you guys. River is a deep guy, fair. But stop psychoanalyzing him. You will NEVER know who he really was deep down. EVER.
RIP River...the world was not the same when you left. You're probably jamming with Lennon Hendrix and Jim 🙏
1:39 his eyes.....
He was so sweet and cute in this interview
I envy that interviewer. And I'm a boy.
look at him. omg

He was a genius, played an excellent role in 'stand by me'
See what you mean , with him being so young and vulnerable looking in this clip you want to look after him! Some people who are naturally of a serious disposition are quite happy in themselves. So endearing - he could've had a smug smirk on his face ,but no , appears totally sweet. R.I.P.
This is why I adore him, beautiful, kind, caring and gentle soul💕☺️😇
