    I'm a longtime vintage clothing seller, and I must tell you that I get really excited when I see seams ironed open like that. It's a sign of the best quality garment, something that's becoming quite rare. Only folks who can afford custom made get clothing with that kind of finish 🤷‍♀️

    • @PositivelyAmy
      @PositivelyAmy  3 года назад +6

      That's the way I was taught to iron my seams and it would feel strange to do it differently, but of course, that's always how I've done it. I'm sure there are other ways to sew and iron clothing as well. :) Thanks for watching!

      @Cynthia D thank you SO MUCH. I think that decently made things created by people making a "thriving" (above living) wage is the only course towards sustainable fashion.

    I love your technique. I especially adore the sleeves. I also love the length of the dresses. It seems that dresses are getting WAY too short these days. If my family or myself buys dresses for my 5 year old, I make sure they size up. I definitely do not want her knees to show. Or mine for that matter. I have a new appreciation for modesty.

    I am so impressed with your sewing skills. Did you learn from your family. I think that is a fabulous way to learn and pass it on through the generations. It is a true gift. I just subscribed to your channel and I find your voice so calming and kind. You are an excellent instructor. I am so glad to have happened to find you. Truly this is so enjoyable.
    I am working on getting my sewing and computer room organized after a new addition to my sewing machine collection and it is in dire need of sorting. ;-) I should part with some of the fabric as well.
    I am excited to explore more of your vlogs. Very delightful to watch and learn from your projects!
    Blessings and thank you for sharing these lessons.

      Thanks so much for watching! I have been sewing dresses since I was around 11. I have always enjoyed sewing! I hope to teach my daughter to sew when she is old enough as well :) Organizing can be such a large assignment, but it always feels SO good once it's all done and everything is in it's place! Happy organizing!! :)

    The stitching you did to sew down the facing is called “under stitching”. To save time on cutting notches on curved seams, use pinking shears to trim the seam allowance. It trims and cuts notches all in one go and you can still understitch it. I love your creativity.

    Amy you did a beautiful job sewing your dresses! I don’t have the patience to sew (I do all kinds of other stuff like crocheting, needlepoint embroidery and jewelry making). You remind me of my mother, who was a good seamstress. I believe she called what you’re doing on the sleeves of the dresses as “easing”, as opposed to ruffling. And you so the double row of stitching on ruffles in case the string breaks when you’re pulling it. I have done that many times! She also always told me never to start a project on a Friday unless you could finish it by sundown or you’ll never finish it. Her Granny used to always say that. I have no earthly reason why-maybe in those days the light wasn’t so good at night and you couldn’t work on it over the weekend! Anyway, I love your videos and your babies are adorable!

    O interesting, I've been sewing the darts first then doing the shoulders and color/neck. Then add the skirt back and front, add the sleeves at the shoulder and then close the sides. I like the way you are doing the top shoulders the bodice and cape look super slick like that. I noticed all the variations of sleeves. Any suggestions on if there is a patterner or pattern company that provides them? The Sew Basic pattern I made up this weekend, was just astonishingly well fitted. Very little in alteration was needed, primarily to shortening the skirt.

      Thanks for bringing that up. I was gonna talk about that and then it totally slipped my mind😕 I was would like to do another sewing video sometime and maybe I can mention it in there. You really don’t need a pattern, but can use your bodice pattern and cut a little wider up at the shoulder to make room for a hem and then slant inward as you cut toward the waist. Does that make sense?🤔

    Where do you get the pattern from?

    My serger is not operational right now (I can't figure out how to thread it haha) what do you suggest to do for the raw edges instead of serging?

      Yes, they can be a bit tricky to rethread😃 You can use a zig zag stitch right along the edge of your fabric and that helps keep the fraying at bay. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching!!😊

      If you have pinking shears you could maybe pink the edges. That's what my mom always did, FWIW
