Loved it and don't be afraid to show us your Menonite world. I find it very interesting. Where I live we don't have Menonites. Knowledge doesn't occupy space.
Amen I love the way you said that knowledge doesn't occupy space I always say learning doesn't cost anything it just gives you everything
please dont apologize for your child making noise- thats Family life! Im enjoying watching how you make your cape dress. children dont stay young forever. be proud of your family-home life. 🌹
It is such a relief to see a young women dress in a rather elegant but modest way. Beautiful presentation.
The dress is beautiful. I started sewing when i was a pre teen as well. You make it look so easy and not as intimidating . Have always shied away from knit material. It looks so neat and lays beautifully. Thank you for taking the time to share your techniques. I might try to tackle sewing with easy care knits now. Smile. I enjoy your channel. God Bless
this makes me want to pull out my sewing machine and sew some clothes!!! Loved this! Good job!!!
+Katie Sottile 😄 Do it!! Thanks friend!
Very pretty, Thanks "sew" much for sharing!
I always always loved your culture but always too nervous to ever tell anyone from your community! I’ve always wanted to wear dress like this and live the life you guys do but I figure it just will never happen. So I’m happy to have found you and learn about your ways of life :D
I love this dress. Its lovely.
I love the look of these "cape dresses" and I enjoyed watching you make this so much that while I do not sew....at all... I have watched this video twice because it is so interesting to watch you design and make this dress.
Lynette I started sewing at a young age but as I went into the 8th grade I had to take home economics....same as what your mother and mine taught us at home. I was so excited as my mom gave me 10.00 to put with my own I had made mowing lawns and babysitting to buy my pattern fabric and notions. I purchased an 8 paneled v- neck pattern with an 18 inch back zipper oh and it had butterfly sleeve which I cut a bit longer because I knew it would look nicer. My teacher just fussed at me but she then figured out I did know much more than the other 13 year olds and as it had 8panels there were no darts but I had to feed the front outside panels into the innner panel to make room for my chest parts. The fabric was casmere, black with tiny flowers of pinks purples and blues and oranges... made double A's grade on it from my teacher....I wore that dress until I was about 22 and had my first child. My mother was so pleased and so we're my 3 sisters, as we shared all of our dresses tops and bottoms. My sister who was 24 months older than me was a born seamstress....she made a blazer which was lined when she was 15 or 16 and someone broke into her school locker and stole it. I cried with her as it had turned out so beautifully.
I look at your wedding picture and just smiled because people spend so much on weddings I mean they go into severe debt when the simplicity of your dress and your bridesmaids are kind of plain but beautiful and so was mine. We got married in traffic court 43 years ago and I wore my bridesmaid dress purchased for my friends wedding.$80.00 I just cut the length to just about the top of my calf and hemmed it up. We grew tired of our parents fussing about where we would have the wedding and opted to have over 300 strangers witness (who were awaiting the Judge to pass sentence on their traffic violation's) our wedding. Just proves you do not have to spend much money to get hitched and certainly the amount you spend does not mean whether or not the couple stays married.
Love your channel! My mom made dresses for me when I was a young girl. She made my wedding dress too. Definitely a talent to make things so beautiful. Now, my granddaughter (her great granddaughter) has asked about sewing. We picked a small kit from Hobby Lobby and my mom has been showing her how to sew. It seems so simple, but definitely a gift that will last in my granddaughter memories a lifetime. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this. I never appreciated what a brilliant design the cape dress is. I love how it creates a nice finished neckline without the need for a facing layer (it always bothers me how they are just loose on the inside of the garment) or bias tape (a technique I am yet to conquer).
Love this video gives me some insight into how my mennonite friends makes their dresses. I myself am not mennonite but my friend makes my aprons and my daughters dresses for me. Thank you for the tutorial
I want to make this! I'm not a Mennonite, I'm a Pentecostal but we are also supposed to dress modestly. The girls aren't supposed to cut their hair and are supposed to wear long dresses with sleeves so now I'm subscribed to a lot of Mennonite women for outfit ideas and sewing tutorials. If I learn to sew all of my dresses can have pockets!
You made sewing the dress look so easy! Love them all. Thank you.
Thank you for showing us your seamstress abilities. You are very talented.
Absolutely loved this video! I would love to see more pictures of your pattern, maybe with some measurements so i can try to make one too!
I love this!
I would wear these dresses, I know this makes Father God very happy to see his daughter dressing for HIM!
Great job sis!
Those dresses, (ESPECIALLY your WEDDING dress) are ALL modest, beautiful and ELEGANT!!! 😊💕
I truly love how you explained it. I just bought a bunch of fabric and I am going to attempt to make a cape pattern dress. I think they are beautiful.
Lynette, I want to give you a little advice. Please take your wedding dress to a professional cleaners and have them clean & preserve your wedding dress. Ask if they have or know where to buy a box or what to store your dress in. I threw away my beautiful wedding dress with pearls in clusters everywhere because it deteriated & turned yellow, after 25 years in my Mama's closet.
I live in Mennonite country and see similar dresses frequently. Very interesting to see how they are made, so thanks for doing this.
You make it seem so easy and effortless! You did a beautiful job and chose a lovely color.
I am new to your channel and I love your sewing method, everything so simple. we can wear this dress in any occasions. Thank You And May God Always Bless. Amen
Beautiful cape dress. I ordered a pattern years ago and it came out wonderful. I made several. Thank you so much for sharing!
Wow, I am really surprised at how versatile the Cape dress is. You can do a lot with it. Your wedding dress is gorgeous!
The dress you made is beautiful. And I love the color on you. Your wedding dress is lovely. I’m impressed with your sewing ability. Sewing on a machine is something I have always wanted to learn but never have. I even bought a machine and I’ve never used it. You have inspired me to take sewing lessons. Thanks! I really enjoyed this video.
I made my wedding gown. I made clothes for myself, husband and children and the kids all through therlir when school years.
You did an excellent job explaining the steps (if the person understands clothing construction). I understood. The blue fabric is really pretty. I was surprised you didn't need a zipper. But you are slender. They are not hard to put in at all. I need a zipper because I like my outfits to be fitter closer to the body. I would never get it on without a zipper.
Good job.
This is wonderful! I would GLADLY pay for a pattern for a cape dress. I have wanted one for many years. Thank you for sharing. God bless
Try Wittmers sewing.. they’ll accommodate you better if you’re in the states. ☺️ the link is up in the description box..
They have them on etsy shop. Michelle Oberholtzer! Perfect and fast.
What a beautiful job! I am a new subscriber and have found a wealth of knowledge about the Mennonite community, which I love! Thank you for sharing your world! 💕💕
Thank you for making it look so easy! I did my measurements and thought out the pattern and went from there... I had a problem with the width of my sleeves (apparently my arms are thicker than I had realized!), but in the end, I came up with a passable dress. I would love to see your dresses/ideas in actual pattern form - and with both, short and long sleeves - perhaps you can do another video or two!
Thank you for sharing your ideas and tips! This dress is beautiful. I am a senior citizen and I'm learning so much from you. You've inspired me to pull out my old sewing machine and get to work. I see you also have house cleaning tips which I know will help me a lot. I am so grateful to you for the inspiration!
I love the blue fabric. I really enjoyed this video. I love how you cut out and sew together your dresses. I use to sew a lot but it’s been many years. Thank you so so much..
Thank you for sharing... I wish I could sew like you do. Very pretty
Thank you for sharing. Nicely done. Just a general sewing tip that I have found useful!: when you are putting 2 fabrics together and one needs to be 'eased in - like a sleeve- put the piece that needs to be worked in on the bottom, against the feed dogs. This will help to pull more fabric through faster on the bottom. Since I do this now, I don't need to gather the sleeve fabric first. Works especially well on knits! I am making any new clothes myself this year... it's a sewing challenge to not buy any ready-to-wear. I have one dress pattern and a t-shirt pattern that are my favorites!
The one thing I've always wanted to do: sew my own clothes. 😭 great video 💙🐝💙
I made 2 knit dresses yesterday and I sewed them on my serger! I love it! Easy, fast & gives it nice stretch without ripping out the stitching. Thanks for the tip!
+chris faus Awesome!!!
This was a very informative video. We love the Mennonite community and love to visit whenever possible. Thank you for giving us a glimpse as to how you make such beautiful dresses! God bless you!
Please tell people to Pre-Wash any kind fabric before cutting out the pieces. Knits have a tendency to shrink. This was a very interesting video. Thanks for this demonstration. I’ve been sewing for forty years and enjoyed watching this so much!
Well Lynette you certainly seem like an expert. You are very talented. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful dresses! Nice tutorial! My mom is also my go-to when I have sewing questions. Sewing is such a wonderful skill to have. Thank you for taking the time to make a video for others to learn to sew their own clothes!
I have wanted to sew Mennonite dresses and really appreciate you video. Thank you.
Wow! There’s no way I can see without pinning the layers. Way to go!!! Loved it!
Such beautiful dresses, Lynette. You're a wonderful seamstress. The colors you've chosen, the rich burgundy and blue with sparkle are perfect color choices with your coloring - very flattering. Your wedding dress is simple and beautiful. Very interesting video and enjoyed learning a bit more about Mennonite modesty and cape dresses. I'm a born again Christian, too. Many blessings, Stacy
+PurplegirlStacy ❤️
Thank You for showing us how you sew your dresses. I noticed in your closet video that you have very nice variety of colors! My Mom sewed my wedding dress too! She put so much love and hard work into it! I really didn't realize how talented she was!! I had always had her there to sew our clothes while growing up. My dress had a organza ruffle around the bottom and she crocheted tiny peach colored flowers with a little seed pearl bead into the center of each flower all around the top gathering of the ruffle. I'm not sure just how many tiny flowers there are!
+Luella R oh wow!! Sounds amazing!! She’s very talented !!
The blue color is beautiful on you. Thank you so much for this tutorial. You are such a nice patient mama!
This is a great video. Very informative. You and your sisters inherited your mother"s beautiful smile!
Loved it!! It inspires me to break out my machine and sew! And after viewing a few comments, it looks like everyone else enjoyed it too. You were a GORGEOUS bride! Thanks for taking the time to share your techniques. 🤗
+Taylor Family Videos 😘
Lynnette you did a great job. We all need a go to pattern that we can dress up or down. I loved your pattern. Great job!!
Sewing with children is a challenge, I did most of mine late night, that's along time ago. Now my sewing time is not under pressure, the fabric looked pretty and smooth construction. God bless y
Sewing is such a lost art, but you sew beautifully! I love your cap dresses, they look so comfortable and are so pretty.
You make it seem so easy. Thanks for sharing. Blessings
Aracelis Escalona ?
Turned out beautiful ! I would like to try one with 3/4 sleeves . Your instructions were perfect . Thanks for sharing Lyn .
You are so talented! What don’t you do?😉. The dress is so pretty! I love the color and I love the style of the cape dress. Just so pretty. Your wedding dress is beautiful. I wish I could go sew something.....but seriously....I got lost in the beginning 🙄. Not your fault! I just can’t sew. I just enjoyed watching you put that together. And so quickly. Amazing. Thank you for the video
You might want to take your wedding dress to the dry cleaners and they can preserve it by putting it in a special bag and box so it doesn’t turn yellow or get otherwise damaged. It is so beautiful and Your daughter may want to wear it one day!
Your dress is beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us.
I really enjoyed learning about the dress and how it is made. Tfs
Thanks so much for this video!! I’m learning to sew Mennonite dresses and this was very very helpful! You’re such an inspiration ❤️ God bless your family 😊
This is a great tutorial,! You are doing a great job explaining and showing everything very clearly. Thank you so much !
I’m a year late, but I just came across this video. I love your other styles for the cape dress. You’re very creative Lynette. I learned how to alter dresses and pants as I’m a petite person and also for my 2 boys’ clothes. I wish I could comfortably sew a dress from scratch and wear it.
Thanks for making this video. I was gonna ask for a video on it but you beat me to it. I love how they're so versatile and can go under anything.
Lynette, you are amazing , and your dress was beautiful, Your sewing skills are great.
I have been sewing for 40+ years. I loved your tutorial and you do make it seem very simple. Nice work! :) I especially love that you shared your wedding picture!
This was so interesting to watch!! Thank you! I’m Mennonite but don’t often sew my own dresses right now, I loved how you hemmed the cape! Definitely keeping that in mind for when I do sew again!
👍🏽
The dress is so pretty, I love the color
Thank you that was so nice to watch. I'm super simple too. I really love to knit or sew the same things over and over. They're pretty and it's very relaxing to do that. You make really nice clothes. Thanks for the video.
Stephanie Hannah You’re welcome!! I hope it helped! 😉
Love it! Your wedding dress and wedding pictures very beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us!♥️♥️
You made a beautiful bride! Lovely and beautiful dress. Thank you Lynette for sharing this video.
That’s an interesting way to sew the cape hem. I’ve never done it that way before, I may give it a try ☺️
Loved the video! Your instruction was terrific. Perfect wedding dress! Thank you for sharing.
Love love love. I am not religiously or culturally affiliated with any group. However I have always loved the modesty and simplicity of Amish and menonite.
Well that was fascinating and I don't even sew! Lol😊 so pretty, love the colour. You make it look so easy. Love the red red dress and your wedding dress. You looked beautiful on your wedding day. Thanks for sharing and God bless.
Thank you for doing this video. You did a great job explaining what you were doing. Sewing is one of those things that is so hard to explain in words and then you see it done and it makes sense! The dress fits you so well and the color is very pretty too. Thanks for sharing!
This was excellent. I came over from Megan's page and am enjoying watching you both.
I love your free lance sewing and it takes some talent to accomplish that but I do love the simplicity and clean lines. You wear it very well. I love to sew and have for decades and have also had trouble with the machine going nutty when working on stretchy fabric. When that happens I get either tissue paper and or newspaper and put it under the fabric before sewing and sew right through it. It gives body to the garment and the needle treats it as a fabric and won't slip and slide so easily. You probably know that trick but just in case and if others want that bit of a hint, they can know it as well. You wedding dress is lovely, I made mine as well back in the late 60's..... ;) I am so enjoying learning about you girls and you are a ray of sunshine to everyone who visits I am sure.
Have a beautiful weekend and enjoy those children. Treasures. I also enjoyed you and your husbands Q and A.......love the sense of humor!
Blessings
There is also "tear-away interfacing" just for that purpose or just starch the edges before you sew the knit and make sure you use the right needle and pins for knits. :) I know you probably know all this, but just for others.
@@shellyslioneyes Yes, that is awesome as well. We use the tear away technique in our embroidery business and it is wonderful. I use ball point needles for any stretch and knits when I sew them, which is not often at all any more but yes, you are totally correct on all of it.
Blessings
I love sewing but I have to use a pattern. You are very talented, I really enjoyed your tutorial, thanks so much for sharing. God bless!
I found this sew interesting 😆 Thank you for sharing. I don’t sew clothes nor do I plan to and 5is was still fun to watch. It must just be your sweet personality showing through. Good job!
Your dress turned out so beautiful, the fabric texture and color is perfect! Thank you so much for showing us, I enjoyed it very much. ❤️ all of those dresses were pretty. I love sewing I just haven’t tackled a machine yet, I want to make my own dresses. Great encouragement!
Thanks so much for sharing your lovely wedding photos. How chic you all look. Loved the tutorial. I'm learning to sew myself now so hopefully will be able to make myself a decent outfit sometime.
+Complementary Life good for you!!
hello love your simple approach to sewing. I have been sewing for years. if you have trouble with your serger try changing the needle. it usually solves the problem
Hi lin, love your videos could watch them all day even though you say sometimes you get stressed we all get that try go for a little walk alone no kids and just sit in a nice spot and take deep breaths I think time out for you is well need try to chill as the kids say , all my love Jessica this is my daughter's I pad God bless you and your family xxx
Great video! I wish I would have known about it several months ago when I was in tears over sewing a cape dress… Obviously, I am a beginner! Putting in the zipper is my least favorite part, so my girls and I are very interested in finding a fabric that you don’t need a zipper for!
Would you be able to let us know where to find those stretchy, knit fabrics? :)
Thank you so much Lynette!
I am so happy to have found your channel a couple of weeks ago, may God abundantly bless it and continue to use it for His glory!
The fit is very nice which is something home sewers tend to struggle with. The color is wonderful. Do you have a video that addresses the customs of dressing for Mennonites? How much variation is allowed in regards to dressing? I hope asking is okay. 😃💜
+Heather Feather we don’t necessarily specifically on that subject.. have you watched my husband and I’s Q & A ? I think we may touched a little on it..? It really does vary a lot between churches. But generally if we wear these types of clothing we would wear them whenever we’re in public for sure. There are instances where it isn’t practical of course so then it’s kinda whatever you decide. Modesty is the main thing in my opinion tho. I don’t feel like you have to dress like us in order to be a Christian.. 😉
Lynette Yoder I completely agree! I am a born again Christian and I has made Jesus the Lord of my life. My goal is to increase my modesty standard for me and my girls. I no longer wear a "bathing suit" when swimming. I feel like I should not lower my modesty standard for swimming.
I just had my first lesson on a sewing machine. Your expert level to me.. Great video!!!
Very cool. Thank you for sharing Lynne. You are gifted.
Lynn I absolutely love your channel thank you so much for showing your wedding dress and your new dress they're absolutely beautiful! Thank you x x Willow
I like the idea of a basic platters and changing it up with different fabrics and details. Nice job!
A pleasure to watch you sew. Your explanations along the way make perfect sense to me. A lot of practical advice which is really helpful. I've learned to sew from my aunt and she taught me a lot of the stuff you're doing like always ironing seams and through-stitching the neckline to help it lay flat. Nice fabric, too! Makes me want to unpack my sewing machine and make something. Thank you!
Very skillfully made and very modest and pretty
I thought this was a really interesting video! Sewing clothes is a lost art. I plan on taking sewing classes when my kids are a little older. My mother in law can sew really well and she's offered to teach me, but I think I would learn better from someone else.
+Mrs. Davis I agree! It is very likely not too common.. and I know I take it for granted ☺️. But yes... do it!!
Craftsy has many good sewing videos for beginners. RUclips does, too.
Your boys are so good. They play so well together.
Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. A modest dress with sleeves to the elbow, and a dress that covers my entire chest and past the knees. As a Christian, I definitely believe in modesty. I have the hardest time buying a dress or even a pattern. If it is long, it is sleeveless, or tight or shows my "chest." Or all 3, or my entire back. Ugh. Thank you. I just found you. There is an Amish shop right here in Youngstown, Ohio. I live close to Holmes. My grandparents lived off Rt. 62. I've driven past many buggies. The ladies shop at our local dollar store next to their store and are so lovely as you are. I like Mennonite clothes for women better, I confess. If God made colorful flowers and birds, why should women have to wear only black and white? SHHH, that's between you and me. Hahaha. But seriously though. I have never thought God would mind. Flowers and birds DO stand out. Yet I do think in a community, the less competition (expensive clothing vs old tattered clothing...THAT I do understand.) Kids kill each other for shoes in some schools - hence school uniforms. So I do understand why there are principles in different groups, usual due to that group's unique past experiences. You are lovely and your husband is hysterical (I started with the q&a) and you are so blessed. I look forward to being your friend and subscriber. Blessings to you and your family. :) Shelly
Your dress turned out beautifully!!! My oldest daughter and I used to sew cape dresses for ourselves and for an at home business. I LOVED watching your video!!! Thank you so much!!!! Hugs...k :)
You do a beautiful job. I love the cape.
I always had serger issues until I got my Babylock. Perfect stitches every time. The issue with knits is changing the differential feed , it can be tricky.
Watching your video of you seeing a dress and praying all went well for your delivery of the baby. I know God is with you. Prayers and love.
I find this very interesting. I use to sew, my mom taught me when I was growing up. We had an old singer sewing machine. Watching this I could smell the machine! I think you do a really good job. Your dresses are very pretty and I love how modest they are. Thanks for sharing. God bless!💕💞💕
F H 😄👍🏽
The dress is such a pretty color and that color looks really nice on you. I was going to write and ask if you had a dress making video and then I found this tutorial. Thanks for sharing
Love this video! I have been sewing since childhood as well.
I love the color! It’s really pretty😊
OH MY GOODNESS I so wish that I could sew!!! I wonder if there are any people that sell these dresses? I am headed to Etsy to find out!!
Thanks for sharing. My daughter is very crafty and is wanting to learn to sew so maybe someday she will be able to make me my own cape dress!!! Wish wish wish!!!!!!
