Loved it and don't be afraid to show us your Menonite world. I find it very interesting. Where I live we don't have Menonites. Knowledge doesn't occupy space.

The dress is beautiful. I started sewing when i was a pre teen as well. You make it look so easy and not as intimidating . Have always shied away from knit material. It looks so neat and lays beautifully. Thank you for taking the time to share your techniques. I might try to tackle sewing with easy care knits now. Smile. I enjoy your channel. God Bless

Lynette I started sewing at a young age but as I went into the 8th grade I had to take home economics....same as what your mother and mine taught us at home. I was so excited as my mom gave me 10.00 to put with my own I had made mowing lawns and babysitting to buy my pattern fabric and notions. I purchased an 8 paneled v- neck pattern with an 18 inch back zipper oh and it had butterfly sleeve which I cut a bit longer because I knew it would look nicer. My teacher just fussed at me but she then figured out I did know much more than the other 13 year olds and as it had 8panels there were no darts but I had to feed the front outside panels into the innner panel to make room for my chest parts. The fabric was casmere, black with tiny flowers of pinks purples and blues and oranges... made double A's grade on it from my teacher....I wore that dress until I was about 22 and had my first child. My mother was so pleased and so we're my 3 sisters, as we shared all of our dresses tops and bottoms. My sister who was 24 months older than me was a born seamstress....she made a blazer which was lined when she was 15 or 16 and someone broke into her school locker and stole it. I cried with her as it had turned out so beautifully.
I look at your wedding picture and just smiled because people spend so much on weddings I mean they go into severe debt when the simplicity of your dress and your bridesmaids are kind of plain but beautiful and so was mine. We got married in traffic court 43 years ago and I wore my bridesmaid dress purchased for my friends wedding.$80.00 I just cut the length to just about the top of my calf and hemmed it up. We grew tired of our parents fussing about where we would have the wedding and opted to have over 300 strangers witness (who were awaiting the Judge to pass sentence on their traffic violation's) our wedding. Just proves you do not have to spend much money to get hitched and certainly the amount you spend does not mean whether or not the couple stays married.

Love your channel! My mom made dresses for me when I was a young girl. She made my wedding dress too. Definitely a talent to make things so beautiful. Now, my granddaughter (her great granddaughter) has asked about sewing. We picked a small kit from Hobby Lobby and my mom has been showing her how to sew. It seems so simple, but definitely a gift that will last in my granddaughter memories a lifetime. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you for sharing this. I never appreciated what a brilliant design the cape dress is. I love how it creates a nice finished neckline without the need for a facing layer (it always bothers me how they are just loose on the inside of the garment) or bias tape (a technique I am yet to conquer).

I want to make this! I'm not a Mennonite, I'm a Pentecostal but we are also supposed to dress modestly. The girls aren't supposed to cut their hair and are supposed to wear long dresses with sleeves so now I'm subscribed to a lot of Mennonite women for outfit ideas and sewing tutorials. If I learn to sew all of my dresses can have pockets!

Lynette, I want to give you a little advice. Please take your wedding dress to a professional cleaners and have them clean & preserve your wedding dress. Ask if they have or know where to buy a box or what to store your dress in. I threw away my beautiful wedding dress with pearls in clusters everywhere because it deteriated & turned yellow, after 25 years in my Mama's closet.

I made my wedding gown. I made clothes for myself, husband and children and the kids all through therlir when school years.
You did an excellent job explaining the steps (if the person understands clothing construction). I understood. The blue fabric is really pretty. I was surprised you didn't need a zipper. But you are slender. They are not hard to put in at all. I need a zipper because I like my outfits to be fitter closer to the body. I would never get it on without a zipper.
    Good job.

Thank you for making it look so easy! I did my measurements and thought out the pattern and went from there... I had a problem with the width of my sleeves (apparently my arms are thicker than I had realized!), but in the end, I came up with a passable dress. I would love to see your dresses/ideas in actual pattern form - and with both, short and long sleeves - perhaps you can do another video or two!

Thank you for sharing. Nicely done. Just a general sewing tip that I have found useful!: when you are putting 2 fabrics together and one needs to be 'eased in - like a sleeve- put the piece that needs to be worked in on the bottom, against the feed dogs. This will help to pull more fabric through faster on the bottom. Since I do this now, I don't need to gather the sleeve fabric first. Works especially well on knits! I am making any new clothes myself this year... it's a sewing challenge to not buy any ready-to-wear. I have one dress pattern and a t-shirt pattern that are my favorites!

Thank You for showing us how you sew your dresses. I noticed in your closet video that you have very nice variety of colors! My Mom sewed my wedding dress too! She put so much love and hard work into it! I really didn't realize how talented she was!! I had always had her there to sew our clothes while growing up. My dress had a organza ruffle around the bottom and she crocheted tiny peach colored flowers with a little seed pearl bead into the center of each flower all around the top gathering of the ruffle. I'm not sure just how many tiny flowers there are!

This was excellent. I came over from Megan's page and am enjoying watching you both.
I love your free lance sewing and it takes some talent to accomplish that but I do love the simplicity and clean lines. You wear it very well. I love to sew and have for decades and have also had trouble with the machine going nutty when working on stretchy fabric. When that happens I get either tissue paper and or newspaper and put it under the fabric before sewing and sew right through it. It gives body to the garment and the needle treats it as a fabric and won't slip and slide so easily. You probably know that trick but just in case and if others want that bit of a hint, they can know it as well. You wedding dress is lovely, I made mine as well back in the late 60's..... ;) I am so enjoying learning about you girls and you are a ray of sunshine to everyone who visits I am sure.
Have a beautiful weekend and enjoy those children. Treasures. I also enjoyed you and your husbands Q and A.......love the sense of humor!
    Blessings

There is also "tear-away interfacing" just for that purpose or just starch the edges before you sew the knit and make sure you use the right needle and pins for knits. :) I know you probably know all this, but just for others.

    • @mlm7598
      @mlm7598 4 года назад

@@shellyslioneyes Yes, that is awesome as well. We use the tear away technique in our embroidery business and it is wonderful. I use ball point needles for any stretch and knits when I sew them, which is not often at all any more but yes, you are totally correct on all of it.

+Heather Feather we don’t necessarily specifically on that subject.. have you watched my husband and I’s Q & A ? I think we may touched a little on it..? It really does vary a lot between churches. But generally if we wear these types of clothing we would wear them whenever we’re in public for sure. There are instances where it isn’t practical of course so then it’s kinda whatever you decide. Modesty is the main thing in my opinion tho. I don’t feel like you have to dress like us in order to be a Christian.. 😉

Lynette Yoder I completely agree! I am a born again Christian and I has made Jesus the Lord of my life. My goal is to increase my modesty standard for me and my girls. I no longer wear a "bathing suit" when swimming. I feel like I should not lower my modesty standard for swimming.

I like the idea of a basic platters and changing it up with different fabrics and details. Nice job!

A pleasure to watch you sew. Your explanations along the way make perfect sense to me. A lot of practical advice which is really helpful. I've learned to sew from my aunt and she taught me a lot of the stuff you're doing like always ironing seams and through-stitching the neckline to help it lay flat. Nice fabric, too! Makes me want to unpack my sewing machine and make something. Thank you!

I thought this was a really interesting video! Sewing clothes is a lost art. I plan on taking sewing classes when my kids are a little older. My mother in law can sew really well and she's offered to teach me, but I think I would learn better from someone else.

+Mrs. Davis I agree! It is very likely not too common.. and I know I take it for granted ☺️. But yes... do it!!

Thank you. Exactly what I was looking for. A modest dress with sleeves to the elbow, and a dress that covers my entire chest and past the knees. As a Christian, I definitely believe in modesty. I have the hardest time buying a dress or even a pattern. If it is long, it is sleeveless, or tight or shows my "chest." Or all 3, or my entire back. Ugh. Thank you. I just found you. There is an Amish shop right here in Youngstown, Ohio. I live close to Holmes. My grandparents lived off Rt. 62. I've driven past many buggies. The ladies shop at our local dollar store next to their store and are so lovely as you are. I like Mennonite clothes for women better, I confess. If God made colorful flowers and birds, why should women have to wear only black and white? SHHH, that's between you and me. Hahaha. But seriously though. I have never thought God would mind. Flowers and birds DO stand out. Yet I do think in a community, the less competition (expensive clothing vs old tattered clothing...THAT I do understand.) Kids kill each other for shoes in some schools - hence school uniforms. So I do understand why there are principles in different groups, usual due to that group's unique past experiences. You are lovely and your husband is hysterical (I started with the q&a) and you are so blessed. I look forward to being your friend and subscriber. Blessings to you and your family. :) Shelly

I always had serger issues until I got my Babylock. Perfect stitches every time. The issue with knits is changing the differential feed , it can be tricky.

I find this very interesting. I use to sew, my mom taught me when I was growing up. We had an old singer sewing machine. Watching this I could smell the machine! I think you do a really good job. Your dresses are very pretty and I love how modest they are. Thanks for sharing. God bless!💕💞💕
