I’m an atheist, alternative, 17 year old European girl, this would normally not be the thing I’m interested in (even though I would love to learn how to make my own clothes), but you are the only RUclipsr that I ever watch a 40 minute video from!! You are so welcoming and relaxed, but definitely not boring!! I love watching you and I hope you have a good day!!!

A couple of tips from a n old sewing teacher:
-To prevent bird nests at the start of a seam, without having to remember to hold onto the threads, start and end any line of stitching by sewing off of or onto a scrap of fabric. It prevents those tangles and saves thread too! Sew right off of the scrap, and onto your seam. At the end of the seam, stitch onto another scrap instead of pulling the fabric away from the machine and leaving a thread tail, (unless you've got another seam lined up behind it.) Now the scrap is already there when you start again. Clip off the one you started with, you can reuse it. It takes a while to make it a habit, but it really helps.
For your lined dress bodice, you can save time and eliminate the binding if you sew the lining RIGHT side to the bodice and turn it toward the inside as you would a facing. Before the rest of the dress assembly of course! If the fabric is stretchy, add a 1/4" strip of a stable fabric (or stay tape) to the seam or understitch it on the lining side.
To make gathering easier, zigzag carefully over a bit of thin string or thick thread, being careful not to catch it in the stitching and keep the zigzag in the seam allowances so you don't have to rip it later. Then you just slide the fabric along the thicker thread. So much easier than basting, and the thread never breaks!

Such amazing tips! I’m going to use these. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

    • @ellellim
      @ellellim 4 года назад +4

yesss!! when I saw she went through the trouble of making a double bodice for the lining and put in wrong side out I was so confused...
About the gathering tip, there are presser foots that help by keeping the thicker tread encased in the midle while we sew the zigzag. Plus, another way of gathering is to ajust the length and tension, in most fabrics the machine does the work for us! but its harder to ajust later if needed.

Tiered dress for the win! So cute. I think maybe the reason the pattern fits you differently than when it was just a shirt is that the weight of the skirt pulls the blouse down so the curves hit you differently...where the waist dips in is now pulled down to the hip (so it feels tight), and under the arms the fabric can pull away from your body due to the weight of the tiers. You might try a belt at the waist to see if you like the fit better. The belt will allow the waist to sit back up where you want it, and carry the weight of the skirt. Just tack loops of embroidery floss into the side seams for belt loops. A braided rope belt might look boho chic! Just an idea...if you are comfortable enough then leave it as is.

For the color blocked shirt that you did first, I would recommend sewing all your fabric like a quilt, piecing each together, then pressing it and cutting out your pattern after you have put that part together. It would remove those seams that you have stitched down and give you a more polished look. :) I think with that little change it would be perfect!

Love the sewing tutorial! When I learned to see a ruffle we were taught to sew to lines of basting stitch about 1/8" apart and gather. Then sew to the garment in between the two lines to lock in the ruffle. Then pull out the bottom basting stitch and voila! A ruffle

I love your channel, your projects, and how honest & relatable you are! You are making the most of this precious period of your life as a stay-at-home Mom. You are an excellent role model for other young Moms, but women of all ages can find inspiration in how you plan your day around your children’s schedule. Working woman can also put your ideas into practice for a more productive day. I like that you use the early morning time before the kids get up to tidy & clean, prep for breakfast & day’s activities, and work on your channel. You spend quality time with them & let them help & learn, but you also give them time on their own for imaginative play & exploration. They are always within sight & in safe surroundings. While they nap, you have your quiet time or learn new skills, make plans, finish projects and film. You use your time wisely, dedicating yourself to family and couple time, which are the most precious times of all. You live out your faith and values in real & practical ways. Thank you for sharing all your times with the RUclips world. Love & blessings to you and yours 🦋🌸🐝🌼🐸🍄🐕🐾🏡💒💗

I'm newish to sewing and you've helped me to realize how easy sewing a shirt can be. :-)
The ruffles are cute, but I doubt I'd ever take the time to make them myself.
I kind of want to sew more clothes, but I find that almost always, buying them is cheaper...tbd on if some day I take in on as a hobby in spite of the higher price. For now, I'm sticking to household projects, a few baby gifts for friends, and cloth masks for wearing when I have to go on errands. Thanks for the sewing inspiration!

You are so brave! I loved watching you create your outfits. When my husband and I lived in the Philippines, I I had a seamstress who came to the house weekly. I simply showed her a picture and she produced an outfit that looked exactly like the picture without any pattern. She was able to make my sisters maternity clothes and dresses for my mother both of whom lived in Texas and for my children and of course for me. I’m marveled at her ability to look at a picture, take measurements and produce something so beautiful and professional. I really enjoyed watching you Meggan. Is there anything you can’t do? Bravo!! You have inspired me!

“A life long learner”... that resonates with me. This video certainly watered a seed that has been under the surface for a while...I would love to learn how to sew. Simple things initially. This morning I came across a bag of scrap fabric and I thought that it would be great if I could sew some cloth napkins. But I think I’ll search Pinterest to see if I can find a tutorial on how to sew fabric napkins by hand.
Keep on creating 🌼It’s inspirational and satisfying to watch 😊

I really like the 2nd shirt you already had with the ruffled bottom--it is so cute on you. You should wear it! If you think it isn't modest, maybe sew a higher waisted slim skirt or a slip-style dress to go under it so you wouldn't show any skin when you bend over. The first shirt was a bad idea--it brings all the attention to the bust. Thanks for the sewing videos. I love that you're so creative and willing to just go for it trying new things!

I have the same problem of not being able to cut fabric on my floor, but not because I have kids, it's because my cat learned that if she runs and jumps on my fabric she'll go sliding across the floor, so as soon as I flatten out my fabric she'll do it again.

For a double bodice like you made, it can help to trim 1/8 inch from the inner layer neckline before you sew it. It will turn and pull more to the inside when you line up the shoulders as usual, giving a turn in that lays to the inside. I am impressed at how you drape and draft your own patterns. This is very cute. I like every thing you did. For the quilted shirt, it seems the inspiration was in quilting cotton and your shirt in a rayon knit. Hard to duplicate easily, but you did it well.

something you said spoke to me , you asked "does anyone have that on edge feeling when sewing too" I do not sew but i do have a edge or leaning into the unknown feeling when painting. it is as if the painting is happening and becoming itself through the process . i love this time , because i feel closest to the creator during these moments m,y mind is clear and i am just in the creative mode. God did not have a pattern when the world was created . I've learned to lean into that time and really connect with the creator and universal love that fuels this life. anyways , that got a bit deep ...but yes live on the creative edge ...where god is

I am currently sewing for my daughter. She teaches Kindergarten and needed some aprons to wear. She chose the crisscross back, Japanese style apron. So, to RUclips and Pinterest I went. I found the style and then found the apron made from a men's shirt. One had a pattern I could draft and one was on the fly. I tried to draft the pattern and then decided I would fly instead. So, I deconstructed on of my husband's shirts and am putting the final touches on now. You are not the only flying sewing enthusiasts out there.

Just a quick sewing tip. When you sew a gathering stitch for the ruffles on the skirt. Sew 2 gathering stitches side by side. About a quarter inch apart. It is so much easier to pull on the 2 threads to gather ruffle. (Hope this makes sense. )

This is great! I have a pile of fabric I ordered to make my daughter and I matching dresses, and even though I’ve made dresses before like this (laying out a dress and cutting around it), I’ve been so nervous! I’m inspired to give it a shot now :)

I love your style. I wish I was allowed this creativity when I learned to sew. My mom was very strick and full of rules. Maybe I would like to sew more. It is a skill I'm proud I have.

I’m not happy you were having problems with your sewing machine or that some of your projects didn’t turn out the way you hoped, BUT it is so encouraging that things don’t always go right for you either-whew!

I want to go back to wearing dresses but I don’t like what they sell in the stores. I have bought some dresses online but some are too small or too big, make me look pregnant, UGG! I want to go back to making my own dresses. I know how to sew with woven fabrics but not knits. 😬

I don't much care for sewing vids, but I found this one interesting. Probably because you kept it simple. The designs are cute. Everything looks nice on you, imo. The top with the two ruffles, I felt could use one more ruffle to make it longer. Loved hearing Evonnie talk about her doll bumping her head and breaking her arm. She makes me smile. Every time.

Hi Megan, such a lovely video which really took you a lot of effort and time to film. Really appreciate and loved to watch it. I really feel you speaking about the mess sewing creates. Even if you try hard, the stuff is all over the place 😂 Really enjoyed watching it while baking cake N°3 and 4 for my boyfriends 30th Birthday today. He wants to take two to work tomorrow 🙈 and two will be eaten this afternoon with his family. Strawberry cake and Marmorkuchen (black and White dough and then swirled in the baking Pan - common cake in Germany) xoxo Stephanie

I am also a fellow Mennonite mom, and though I enjoy new dressers I will never be the avid seamstress my mother was who sewed for my three sisters and I sometimes all matching dresses in a day. So I love when you “wing it” And make it look easier to me they were just doing it by figuring out math seems a little overwhelming. I love the more fabric of your first shirt and I think it fit you so well I just didn’t care for the stuff you sewed on top for the stripes I would just take those back off and wear the shirt without it, and the dress was really cute!

tiered skirts are the easiest to make! they only require rectangles and you can customize the size and style easily. The downside is gathering the fabric, but it's most time-consuming but not hard at all in terms of difficulty.

I wonder if the shirt with the patchwork would be nicer, if it wasn't applied on top of the mauve, but instead colorblocked and pieced together.
Much more time consuming, but might yield a better result.
Just a tip for anyone watching!
Also, yes. I usually try to spend a day or two cleaning the house, then spend a day off sewing!

Megan I am so impressed with you making your own patterns. That is something I couldn't do however I do see a lot. I sew for my granddaughter (most of her clothes), my daughter and I mostly tops and dresses. I loved you dress. Just a little hint, if you are lining the bodice it is most common to have the wrong sides together, because you don't ever see the inside of the fabric. But amazing job!

My sewing machine always acts absolutely stupid when I really want to get something done now. I understand your frustration. I love sewing but sometimes I have my times of tears and heartfelt prayers. Sewing and gardening seems to have me praying more.
I really like the first t-shirt and the last dress. I want to make the last dress but I found a pattern on Etsy. I’m good at sewing but not so great at pattern making. I’m going to make my own t-shirt pattern like you did.

as much as you sew, girl, you need to invest in a gathering foot. i have been sewing for years and only invested in one a few yrs ago. it cuts ruffle time in half. all you do is put the foot on set to the biggest stitch and it will gather as you sew!! also the ruffled shirt is very cute, but i agree on your thinking it could look maternity! i would have sewn it different but cant really explain in words that it would make sense. it would lay more flat. great job!!

I agree on the 1st top , the top turned out really cute but the strips you added to the top made the top look cheap it just didn’t look right. If you’re able to take that piece off you should.on the 2nd top I think you could add another ruffle to the bottom the only think it would be hard to match the color or if you’re lucky to find something that would look good with the color of the top. Or you could remove the ruffles and add new ones. When you finished the 2nd top I think it would look much better with less ruffles I think it would lay better and it wouldn’t look like you’re covering up a baby bump 😂 I liked the top but with less gathering on the ruffles 👍🏼. The dress came out so cute ♥️. And all the things I said about the two tops are just my opinions . I think you did an amazing job making those outfits without patterns you’re very brave👍🏼.

I never liked sewing. It used to take me many hr. and I still was not happy with finished products. I also felt guilty for not cleaning my house, preparing meals longer & spending time with my children... Those days are over. I shop the thrift store, not compete with the other Menomite ladies & wear whats modest & clean ;)

Wow! Seven languages! Sounds like my dad... but for all his languages, he didn't teach my sisters & I any.... Once my grandparents passed (in 56 & 57) none of his family spoke anything but English... a hold over from being German in the USA during WWII... some of that held over to the early 60's, unfortunately.
Bless you in your continuation of learning languages & may someone be inspired by your love of learning. Shalom.
