    The advice about "just because it's soft doesn't mean the chana dish is cooked" is really helpful. Thanks. I'll keep this in mind for my future cooking.

    We love Chana Dal in our house but unless you are cooking this dal with a pressure cooking I highly recommend soaking the dry lentils overnight (at least 12 hours) or be prepared to be cooking it on the hob for 2hours plus to get that wonderfully broken down creamy consistency. The tarka for this is beautifully garlicky and makes the entire dish totally scrumptious. Thank you Chetna for another great recipe 💕

    This reminds me of a super simple dal that a Pakistani Auntie taught me. She only used chili powder, salt, and tumeric to cook the dal, and then caramelized garlic in butter and topped with cilantro. This was the kids favorite dal.

    One of my favourite Indian dishes and when I cook a dahl at home I sometimes include extra items like garden peas, or broccoli, or small vine tomatoes chopped up, all added at the end of the main cooking, but only one option. Eaten with poppadoms and bread

    Chetna, I have a question. Have you ever cooked with the actual turmeric root? and if you have, do you prefer one more than the other? Orrrrr do you feel that turmeric powder gives you the same flavor and health benefits as "fresh"?

    Hai Chetna...if I can't finish the dal at once? is it necessary to separate the Dal and the spices?

  • @Mrhullsie2

    Is just an hour accurate for cooking the dhal? Mine has been simmering for almost two hours and has not reached the consistency of yours. And smoking hot pan not a good idea, cooked seeds and garlic much too quickly

    What would be a good replacement for fresh coriander here? I am one of those (genetic apparantly) which coriander leaves just tastes awful for. I want to try the tasty looking food but with coriander in it it just tastes like minty metal 😖

      Dal is like a blank canvas, I think any fresh herb could work in this

    • @m.theresa1385
      @m.theresa1385 9 месяцев назад

      Adding your favorite herb will flavour your dal. I usually make mine with a bit of thyme and today I will be adding some fresh chopped watercress to finish simply because I have a little left in the fridge to use up.
