  • Part 1 of 2. I bought both of these tiger bark ficus bonsais at a home improvement store. The one in this video was just purchased this week and the other one that I work on in part 2 was bought around 2 years ago. Enjoy!

Great roots on the new bonsai. I was sure you'll get big fat roots under the soil.. Really good roots!

Nice, I just bought one from probably the same place you did and it didn't say what kind of tree it was. I'm almost positive it's a Tiger Ficus now. Came in a similar pot too.

Hi there just asking a question I own a ficus retusa tree and it's been pruned when I bought it it but the only left 4 branches at the top of the tree.. such a shame really could have been a very nice bonsai so there's no lower branches I can see where it's been pruned all the way up the tree my question is is will I ever be able to grow lower branches on the tree ever again thank you...great vid btw

Thanks! And I would think yes, as long as it's still alive which it sounds like it is. If you want to email me a few pics I can maybe give some opinion on what you could try? It's bonsaiboise@gmail.com

Actually I just went to your channel and saw the video. Yes there's definitely hope! Here is what I would, (and I do this all the time despite how weird it's going to sound.
      Three things.
      1. Prune the branches about halfway, leaving 4 or 5 leaves at least.
      2. Water it well, and spray most all over the tree. Leaves, trunk, everything.
      3. Get a clear plastic bag. Anything, trash bag, clear floral bag or gift bag. Whatever, as long as it's clear or mostly clear. Put it over the tree. Check it about once or twice a week. Water once a week.
That's it. It creates a greenhouse effect and before you know it, new shoots and arial roots will be popping out of everywhere.

This is excellent! Where did you get that pot? It really works perfectly.

Thank you! I got these at a local store called zamzows here in boise. I haven't seen them too much lately but occasionally they get some in.

Just bought my ginseng bonsai a few weeks ago and am debating repotting it. It seems to be healthy so far but I think it needs a bigger pot. I really mike the look that the moss gives the tree and is there anyway I can replicate that without using the same soil?

    • @BonsaiBoise

I would think you could just put the same moss on the new soil. Worst case, maybe sprinkle some old soil on top and then put the moss on that?

Superb setup for futurum! Why they put glue on it!? Did it have an hole for drainage?

It did have a drainage hole luckily. I think they glue the rocks in place so they survive all the moving around they get while being shipped from store to store. Thanks for the comment!

Is there such a thing as overtiming the roots or branches? That was na lot of trimming and seemed a drastic......Just got my 1st Ficus, hoping to keep it alive -
    =)

    • @BonsaiBoise
      @BonsaiBoise  Год назад

There is! But timing has a lot to do with it too. This time of year I wouldn't do much, if any root trimming. Ficus's respond best when it's done in the middle of the growing season.

ugh...Those dreadful commercial S bonsai. Let it grow a few more years in the ground, then we'll talk again
