Can't believe I had not subscribed before, thanks for the reminder. Like your gentle humble approach to bonsai. Cool watching your grow as a bonsai hobbiest!
Thank you! I actually just posted an update on one of those trees a couple days ago. I didn't realize how far it had come since then until I went back and watched this!
Cool, I’ve got a new tiger bark too. Could you please make updates about your ginseng in the near future? I’ve discovered if people who train bonsai start to train some ginseng ficus the results can be pretty cool.
Looks like I missed this earlier! I actually don't have a preferred fertilizer, but have been experimenting with some different kinds. I am starting to lean towards a liquid concentrate called "Shultz liquid plant food." I used it all winter and got good results.
It sure is. And you're right, it can happen. This is one I haven't gotten too aggressive with but the time is coming soon when I will have to make the big cuts.
Thanks! And to be honest, I've never worked with a hydrangea bonsai before. I would try the Bonsai Zone channel with Nigel Saunders. I think he has a playlist on them.
I really like this tree. If you cut the left side branch back, would you not get better branches lower? Plus I personally think that branch is a bit thicker and out of proportion to the other branches. But of course it is your creation or art as some say, and it is up to you!
If you look years ahead if you save it as a sacrificial limb itll thicken the trunk. I know ficus can be finicky but I have 8 two are ginseng one ive had several years and the others picked up during quarantine but In Missouri move them out for the day if it's at least 60 and pinched shoots I mean a quarter inch and they all have 6 inches of growth since january im doing a couple brooms and informal uprights or slants I left my S curved one in 45 degree night for 4 or 5 hours and it dropped almost everything it was rough with wire gouges root rot and more when I bought it
I'm glad you see I know what I'm talking about I've been doing bonsai since jeez like last September lol ove just been doing all the research I can my biggest problem is mixing the soil I want as us has few or at least much fewer options without ordering online I'm tearing through perlite not that it breaks the bank but i need organic chunks for my Japanese maples drainage
Best suggestions I'm broke and I'll be mixing 6 gallons as their full nursery 5 footers I took one down to 3 it got frost burn or something killing the leaves looked up none are serious jus defoiliated the 20% damaged most and some milder uses baby wipes with aloe and wiped it I cant afford the orchid mix any mulch or compost with better drainage maybe succulent cacti mix with I bit of moisture control miracle grow what do you do for you're ficusi need a benjamina or weeping fig

Looks like you have a nice nebari going. Uhgg roots exposed neighbors making noise, can't stop now.
Yeah I thought about "shh"ing the neighbor but I doubt he would have found it as funny as me.

Greetings from a fellow Idahoan! Quick question for you: what's your preferred fertilizer for your ficus bonsai?
Looks like I missed this earlier! I actually don't have a preferred fertilizer, but have been experimenting with some different kinds. I am starting to lean towards a liquid concentrate called "Shultz liquid plant food." I used it all winter and got good results.
I really like the pots. Do you think that the three branches so close together will cause inverse taper? It's a delicate balance, isn't it?
It sure is. And you're right, it can happen. This is one I haven't gotten too aggressive with but the time is coming soon when I will have to make the big cuts.
Okay, you’re too adorable! You gave me confidence to prune my hydrangea bonsai. It’s looking pretty full, any advice?
Thanks! And to be honest, I've never worked with a hydrangea bonsai before. I would try the Bonsai Zone channel with Nigel Saunders. I think he has a playlist on them.

You're probably correct, and had I been feeling a little more ambitious on this one, I think you're idea would work.

@@zacharymurray8257 Oh dude, check out my video on how I make mine. I make a tub for about $20
No wiring to position branches?
Not always necessary. Note the RUclipsr referenced above, Nigel, who never wires anythng. The process is called "Clip & Grow".
