I am a 37 mom of three and have been self conscious of my lisp my whole life. my 5 year old is presenting with a different type of "s" therapy need that you also address in another video. I can't thank you enough! I will work on me and be able to help my child at the same time. bless you
This video is already helping me so much with my little! She doesn’t have a lateral “s” instead hers comes out through her nose. We’ve been trying to correct it for a while now! I think this might just be the trick we needed ❤ thank you!!
I just automatically go back into blowing the air out of the sides. it's like I have no idea how to even make the S sound in the front. my lisp sometimes makes me so conscious sometimes I can cry
Try making your lips a little smaller (purse them a little) see if that helps! & I can promise you, it probably bothers you more than anyone else even notices! (We’re all our own worst critic!)
@@TheSpeechScoop oh this helped a lot! I finally managed to get the air out of the front of my mouth. I'm actually so excited already and yes I have been told that others don't seem to notice my lisp much but as someone wanting to go into the voice acting or singing industry, it really bothers me a lot. i will keep on practicing on my own and thank you so much for the tip and your wonderful videos!
@@soraka7698 Amazing work! You can do it! Habits (like anything) are tough to break but with a little will power, motivation and determination, I know you can do it!! :)
I love this video! I provide intervention as an SLPA for a 4th grader with a lisp and we worked on the exploding T today and after a few trials, he started to get it! He even said "ohhhh that's how it is supposed to sound!" Thank you so much!
Thank you! My 3 year old has a lateral lisp. I've asked her pediatrician about it, and she was unconcerned. BUT I worry that early intervention is neccessary. This video give me some tools to help her work on that s sound from home until we are able to get some help.
I have trouble saying s with a smile because the air goes through the side but when I close my lips the sound comes out much better, although it’s not the correct method. I’m not sure what to do now..
what technique would you recommend for pronouncing the x and k sound properly with a lisp, as it makes a really gushy sound with my lisp when I try and say it??
Thanks for these.. I am giving you credit and sharing in a google classroom for my individual students. Today I noticed a NJ small license plate behind you. I did 35 years in NJ before moving to Winter Garden Florida.. now working Prek to 5 here! Thanks again
Hi, i am currently working with a child on lateral s but they are unable to produce the t sound as they also back this sound. Any other tips and neither of these tips will work. Also trying to work on the t sound. Thanks!
I am 20 years old nd I am having trouble to pronounce s to f in many words like (itself=Itfelf) So this lisp will fall in what category of lisp I believe lateral lisp right
Hi, your video was helpful, will try some of the exercises. Do you have any tips for helping with a lisp (lateral I think) on the “s” sound whilst singing. I am trying to sing but hate listening to myself on recording and part of it is my lisp on the “s” sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My son has a very strong lateral lisp me having to remind him i feel will affect his self esteem. Im so scared of that for him to be self conscious as hes a huge talker. Also hes missing a lot of teeth right now can i still practice these techniques? He has too many holes for the air to escape so there’s that
I feel like I have a lisp but I don’t know what kind I have. It’s weird because when I talk air comes out of the right side of my mouth but not the left. My S’s also don’t sound slushy like your demonstrations. They sound kind of muffled and soft, I also only hear the lisp when I’m saying words with multiple s sounds in them. This makes me really self conscious and I hate talking because of it. I’m 17, is it possible for me to fix this problem?
Side note: The lisp/whatever it is didn’t start until after I got my braces removed when I was 13 or 14, I never had a lisp before that. (I don’t know if that’s helpful but I thought I should add it)
check to see what your lips are during during productions - ALSO, after I typically target words with one of the sounds in it, such as "see" and the client can master it, the NEXT step is the 2 sound productions such as "see-saw" because it is common to produce one quickly and the second one incorrectly, often just due to habit. so keep on practicing these specific words and work slowly and then increase the speed! you can do it! let me know!
Hi, thanks for taking the time to put together this video, seems great. I am 15 and from uk, when I say these words, should I do it in your accent ( American) or can I do it in a British accent. Because accents involves different movements of the tognue. Many thanks !
I’m 16 from the uk and just to the exploding t thing where you drag it out for like 30 minutes and you will get the hang of it easily ( in the British accent you don’t need to change it )
so far i can speak letter s while my tounge is on inside and back my teeth but the problem if i speak simething normal in the sentence i heard my self always snake sounds or like sh sound.
Yes of course! I would recommend checking out the pre-linguistic skills first, there are 11 you can Google them and then search my videos for how to work on whichever skill your child needs help with!
Hey, every time I try to make the "S" sound, the tip of my tongue immediately goes to the back of my top front teeth, similar positioning to when pronouncing the letter "L". Is this the correct positioning, and if not, where should it be?
it should be in the middle of where your teeth meet - but to overcorrect, which I would recommend because your tongue is used to going UP, I would recommend pushing it down to the bottom!
@@TheSpeechScoop, thank you! I will try this. Another thing, I think because of the way more teeth are formed, air escapes too much from the sides of my mouth, is there anything I can do about that?
Do you have any tips for helping the child generalize the sound to everyday conversation? I have a student that can make the sound in therapy but when she is talking normally she goes back to her lateralization.
Hi there. I really have difficulty getting the S and Z sound right. But I am confused if its lateral lisp or not. Because if I clear my mouth from saliva then I was able to produce a pretty fair S sound. But I think the problem is with my whole speech. I sound like there's a lot of saliva is in my mouth. Do you know what the exact problem is? I wanna sound better when I sing but my speech problem restricts me to do my audition. Please help.
try doing a "hard swallow" before speaking, and swallowing often. Some people produce more saliva than others, just naturally. The more you practice with the non-slurpy sound and make the corrections as needed - that habit should form with correct tongue placement to help with the excess saliva
Enrique Bunbury hi there, Could you’re me know a little more in detail of what you’re looking for? Id you need the “hand vowel cues” I have a video titled “All words sound the same, vowel cues to the rescue!” Or I do them in the “apraxia” video as well
I love the video but i really have no clue at what i am doing! Should i still keep the tongue at the tip of my teeth n still blow the air at the middle of the teeth???? If if i still put my tongue at the tip of my teeth the air will only come out at both sides but if i keep it away then only i can produce some sound at the middle front of my teeth I'm confuse please help me. THANK YOU
I am 26 years old, and till now I thought that the proper way make the /s/ sound is by blowing air from my right back teeth. I am trying to fix this, but i got dispaired, I 'm not sure how to use my tongue and blow air from the front teeth. I mean, shall I have my tongue straight or the tip of the tongue must touch the back of my upper frond teeth? Or it must touch the alveolar ridge? Till now. I only managed to produce a /sh/ sound, or maybe a slurpy /s/, I am not sure. When im trying to record myself speaking, it sounds like my /s/ is clear, but when im trying to speak with this "new" (for me) way, the others say that I 'm talking weirdly and not clearly.
It does not need to be touching the alveolar ridge or the teeth, just very close to both! Also use whichever way works best for you! Not everyone produces sounds the same way! Some people (depending on dialect) consistently use “sh” for /s/ & it is considered correct! Whatever works best for YOU!
@@TheSpeechScoop Nothing works best for me I believe. Especially with the words "sea" and "salad", my /s/ is very bad. I ' even trying to make my tongue like a butterfly, but it still doesn't sound correctly. But thank you for your reply
@@DiamanDCosta Do you have trouble making Z sounds? zipper, zag, zebra, Zelda? Use the same placement for your S sound.... the Zip/Sip and Zag/Sag should have the exact same tongue placement. The only difference being the vibration in the throat.

It slips out of habit so the more you practice & hold it without slipping, the better chance you have at replacing that muscle memory!
