Cues for the correct production of R sound:
Try placing your tongue for /l/ first - then pull it back while gliding on the roof of your mouth to produce "r" (LEARN)
More cues:
JAW open
Tongue flexed (flat) "ee"
pull tongue tip up and back
flair out lips
pull tongue up and back
(This is the retroflexed /r/)
Progressions:
/r/ in isolation 8/10 times (sound by itself)
/r/ in a syllable 8/10 times imitated "ray, ree, rye, row" (someone says it first, then you say it)
/r/ at syllable level 8/10 times independently produced
/r/ in initial position of word with words that end in /k/ and /g/ 8/10 times imitatively
------ rag, wreck, rig, rug, rack, reek, rake, etc
/r/ in initial position of words independently produced 8/10 times
/r/ word used in a short phrase imitatively/independently 8/10 times "a rake"
/r/ words used in a short sentences imitative and then independently 8/10 times "I Rang the bell"

Honestly, this has to be the best video. I know that she said that most children naturally get it at age 7. My son just turned 6 and I want him to start working towards it early. The other videos on here just don't compare and they were a waste of time. My son instantly started saying his "R" at the beginning of the words after we watched this video.

I just want to say, as an older teenager, watching this brought back so many bad memories and for my whole life I was struggling with this. Even after speech class when I was in elementary school, I still had an issue, this video actually almost made me cry and I was beginning to tear up. Thank you. Now I have motivation to fix this because I am tired of being made fun of and tired of be self conscious when talking to people or new people, I am the quiet person that does not talk because of this. I could never tell if I mispronounced a word because it always sounds correct, unlike other people I don't have it bad, sometimes you can tell cause I talk fast (have to work on that, that does not help the issue either). Other people have it worse than me and I truly hope they can fix it also. I never knew my lips were supposed to be back this whole time, I been having them "fall down" now I know what to work on. It is 5 a.m and this is when I decided to make a change for myself. I'm going to practice everyday and want to stop being made fun of and want to get my confidence back. Thank you for reading my rant if you made it this far, time to practice, after watching the video and doing it the correct way I can hear a difference. Thank you.
You can do it. I totally believe in you. Just a few little tweaks and recognizing the difference will help a ton! Practice practice practice! Mirrors can be very helpful as well if you are concerned about lip strength! :) you got it! Also people who make fun of other people are simply jealous of them and have low self-esteem and confidence so take it as a compliment that you have something they are jealous of and don’t listen to them. 💪🏽
This made me feel less alone, I'm in highschool now and I remember all through elementary school this boy always made fun of the way I said his name and everytime it made me more self conscious and now I hate the sound of my own voice, my mom never got me help so now I'm trying to fix it myself
I have trauma way back elementary days because of stammering with the letter /r/ and until now, I dont know what is the treatment for this illness.

OMG YOU'RE JUST LIKE ME! So im in 8th grade and like i get made fun of everyday. its awful. my self confidence is so diminished from this that every time i try practicing speech or even think about it i start crying. i also cant tell . i have trouble with the r sound but my r sounds just like my l so to me it always sounds correct.

I took speech therapy until I was 11 years old. I couldn't pronounce the "R" sound correctly. I just loved my speech teacher Ms. Karen. I saw her many times as I got older because I lived in a small town. She really touched my heart.

Thank you so much! This helped my 7 yr old have an actual r sound for the first time in just a minute of practicing. He had some tears but looking forward to giving him some confidence!
One thing I've found for my youngest (a toddler), is to have him practice the R sound via a "rooster" noise. I say, "What does the rooster say? Er-er-er-er-ER!" He really responds to that. I even got his older sibling to participate with that one, despite previous resistance to practicing because it "sounds funny, Mom."

Went to speech therapy for 7 years. When I was younger. Speech therapists are so underrated. In my humble opinion. Was the one person( outside family ) that I never felt bad about talking around. Which is huge!! ❤️

i've found that every kid I work with who was taught this lateral position for /r/ do find with /r/ initial/medial, and blends. But it wreaks absolute havoc on vocalic /r/. I have never had so many kids on my caseload who have all their /r/'s except vocalic /r/.
My native language has a rolling R, a special kind of hell.
30 Years old, never got over it, Saw a speech therapist when I was like 8, she completely butchered what was left of my R and essentially pushed it into my throat.
Became pretty english over the years but carried that concept of a rolling R into my expectations of english, Only recently (last week) I learned that its different. And based off of this I want to say this seems pretty easy.
Need to start pushing RUclips videos and my speech has been such a nusance. But decided im done with that now.
Though I would not change any of it. My voice was kind of my catalyst to greatness.
It withdrew me and I got very good at introversion. Which gave me pretty amazing independence and forced my attention to things (and how they work) rather than people.
An amazing path indeed.
But its still a big enough barrier now that I simply need to overcome it.

I hate the fact that everytime i try talking i just sound so weird and no matter hpw hard i try i just cant pronounce certain words and i know how to pronounce then in my head but when i say the word its sounds weird i just feel so bad for anyone that ever talks to me bc they have to hear my weird voice

Yes! No worries until age 7! you can type in "speech sound development" into google and hit "images" and you should see some charts pop up with letter development and ages for each! Generally we begin working on /r/ after age 7! Doesn't hurt to practice some tongue strengthening exercises in the mean time though! :)
Is the goldfish activity not oral motor approach? I was always taught that oral motor is not helpful for artic therapy as speech doesn't require much tongue strength.
Speech is part of oral motor which is needed for speech ….
@@Raven-fx5qm hi! Just wondering are you an SLP? Do you use Oral motor for your clients? Just curious because the way I learned it, the most recent research shows that oral motor techniques for strengthening weren’t an effective treatment. Dysphagia yes, but not artic. Lots of trials of correct productions help establish correct motor movements of the articulators, but strengthening the tongue isn’t helpful because motor learning happens when clients practice the movements they want to actually execute. I had a professor once say oral motor techniques for artic are like lifting weights when you’re trying to learn how to play piano. Lol I know it used to be a popular treatment, but it’s no longer evidence-based. 🤷♀️

Jessica Halverson by age 7- most kiddos (90%) have developed this sound, so at age 7 if it’s not acquired yet, look into having her articulation screened or evaluated by her speech pathologist at school!

My daughter is 6 and in 1st grade. She’ll be 7 very soon so I want to start working on this even though her teacher said we can wait a while longer. The problem is she’s starting to feel self conscious. She said she talks like a baby and while I think it’s adorable, I feel so bad that her classmates have a hard time understanding her. Her R sounds like W so it comes out as “ow” instead of “are”. She can’t pronounce her name, saying “Lau-win” instead of “Lauren”. Thank you for the amazing tips. We’ll start doing these exercises at home before pursuing speech therapy.

Thank you this video. My son is 3y and 9 months and his nursery teacher mentioned we might need to speak to a speech therapist. He is bilingual but mainly use English and only some words in Bulgarian. Probably I am too used to his speech to notice all but definitely one of the sounds I know he has trouble is R. Do you think we can work with him at home to improve his pronunciation or it is too early. Other problems he can't get "yellow" correctly 🙈
Hey there! No worries on your little one with R just yet! Typically we start to correct this around age 7! If you need a free developmental speech sound chart- you can download it for free on my website at SPEEDYSLP.com & also it may not hurt to get a speech evaluation simply to see what other sounds may be impacted due to dialect! :)
I was during able 10 days to pronounce the letter “R’’ by placing the pen under the tongue and pronouncing Ar and Ra alternately for a quarter of an hour, then pronouncing the word Da Da Da Drrr for 5 minutes. The exercise was repeated 5 times during the day.
My inquiry is for my 3 yr old eager daughter. She is having challenges with her English american R, mostly. I do practice sign language and she is also enjoying learning Spanish from her mother.
I recognize you state not to worry if a child is under 7, 6 or 5. I have my 4 year old and she was phonetically sound at 3, but at 2 was 85% clear. I do understand I cannot compare but I want to grant my youngest confidence that she is just as amazing as her older sis.
So what more can I do to help her practice to strengthen her confidence to practice?? Thank you
I might have her older sister model for her words and show her how her mouth/tongue are positioned/move during placements and productions of /r/! (kids seem to listen better and follow more directions for siblings vs parents) also, yes, 3 is very very early for the /r/ sound. My daughter couldn't pronounce /r/ until she was almost 7, and she will still "developmentally appropriate" so try not to worry! There are some /r/ speech sound worksheets available for free on teacherspayteachers or just online if you google it and maybe she would like to do a painting/coloring/craft sheet with a bunch of /r/ words for a little practice!
I'm an adult and trying to figure out why on listening back to my voice my R's are so weak unless I do a Scottish accent. This makes a lot of sense!

For some reason, my speech went bad since I graduated college at age 23. I'm 26 now and I can't say the number, "Three", "Through" or words with the R pronunciation. I can't pronounce my own birth year anymore (1993) nor my phone number which has a few threes in it..

Also, my other son is almost 6 and talks just like my 7-year-old. Would you suggest working with them both at the same time, or not working with my 5-year-old at all yet? Would it hurt anything to work with him too?
hey there! I would begin with your 7 year old in whichever sound is CLOSEST to correct (sometimes it’s the final “er” like in the word booger! (hehe- silly words are best!) or the initial like “rag” -& see if he can get either of those close & begin there! (save the “or” sound for very last!)
for your other little one, I would hang tight & see if his sounds will naturally develop through his age and/or as your older son makes progress! I’m r he’s closer to 6.5-7 I would have your older son try to teach him a couple of words!(kids always want to be like their older siblings & might try a little harder for them!)

What would make a person move backwards in speech?
I'm watching to adjust because now I have a stutter with R's.
This has occur after a bout with depression. I'm assuming that's why. Now I'm trying to regain some cognitive skills.
I noticed my child tongue doesn’t move a lot when he tries to speak how long do we do the tongue exercises and how long will it take for him to be able to pronounce the letters like s,t,r,g,,k he is 4 years old

You mentioned this is for older kids. My son is only four, but for his R sound instead of the typical W sound little kids tend to replace with, he uses an L sound. So for “race” he says “lace,” “run” is “lun,” etc. We were referred to speech but it’s a year waiting list in our area. Is this L sound something critical I should try to work on at home or will develop the R with time? Thanks!
L & R are both considered “liquids” in speech & are the second to last sounds to develop (behind TH) so just work on L placement of tongue & minimal pairs (lock vs rock) To help with discrimination in the meantime!
It's interesting that you said children that have a speech problem with the letter R have a weak tongue.. I've heard foreigners say that the letter "R" is very pronounced in English. It's the main sound that they say is very prominent in the English language.

I am 21 years old and I have always struggled with the r sound. I didn't realize or it didn't bother me until recently. Is there a physical side to this that makes this more challenging to learn how to do? Or can it be corrected at any age with practice?
It can be corrected with any age ( I worked with a 28 year old on a lisp that we resolved pretty quickly with A LOT of practice at home and in therapy - just extra practice and you can do it!
Tongue ties can certainly impact the tongues ability to function correctly! And you still need lots of practice to build the strength... LOVE this video

An /r/ phoneme is often "glided" to the /w/ until the child is older. There has been a multitude of research into child articulation development. This research has shown that /r/ is often not completely developed until the end of their 6th year! Sometimes, a child doesn't need therapy, they just need time🤗

Hey dear my son had tongue tie we removed it few years back but stil he is having prblm to pronounce words start with D and T any tips which can help to improve I will be very thankful to you 😊
try putting him "airplane baby" on your feet and then targeting that sound, like "t,t,t,t,t,tssssssss" or "two!!" because the tongue naturally falls forward when we face down. I also touch my nose for the /t/ cue! I will try to make a video for /t/ and /d/. They are the same sound in phonetics (made in the same place of the mouth with the same part of the tongue; However! ONE (/d/) is made with the voice "on" meaning that the vocal cords vibrate, and the /t/ sound is the exact same, but with the vocal cords / voice OFF. Hope this helps for now!

I'll be completely honest, didnt work with my child much during this time, but after seeing how the new speech therapist at our school is always canceling or changing up the zoom meeting times I cant do deal with it. I'll be using this method with my child as his problem is "R" *hes honor roll super smart kid* thank you and I would love to know any more tips for the "R" sound.
Brenda H. Hey there, ahhh I hate to hear that and I completely understand. Check out teacher pay teachers & type in “r sound” & check the “free” box & grab some free worksheets to practice with at home! There are several games, crafts, word searches, etc. if you reply with a few words specifically that you’d little one may need help with, I can give you some key words to narrow down your search bc as you already know, it’s a large field (initial r, medial r, final r (er), vocalic r, (or, air, ear, ire,) r-blends, etc) I hope you were able to find my “final r video” as well to help!

For the R sound, is the tongue meant to push off against any part of the mouth to initiate the sound?
the only part off the tongue that should be touching anything are the back sides, which are barely touching the back molars!

Hey there I would make sure that he has adequate song movement and elevation ability first and then begin working on the L sound
What if a child (just turned 4 years old)had the R sound and lost it… r at the beginning of a word was always a challenge but er was there and now it’s gone. Teacher is now teachEE, water is now WatEE. Cause for concern or will it come back?
Hmmm interesting substitution - is he doing that EE sound w any other words??

Would your methods work for children with speech apraxia? Just wondering if that requires a different approach. I have two boys 12 and 14 who both have speech apraxia. They are still struggling even thought they have been in speech therapy for years. Any recommendations? Thank you for what you do!

@@TheSpeechScoop Thank you so much for your response. The main issue is with the Rs. I am going to use your videos to get them on a daily routine of practicing and strengthening their tongues. The only other thing that I can think about off the top of my head is with my 14 year old (who is worse than the 12 year old). When he says garage it sounds like he is saying crotch. Maybe you could tell me what to work on to help fix that. As they get older this is becoming more of an issue for them socially. I don't want to see them held back in life because of this. As you know people (especially teenagers) can be quite cruel. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you again. As I read some of your comments I can see that you are helping many many people with these videos.
So the good news is, it sounds like he’s close to the correct production, because /k/ and /g/ are the same sound- but one is voice off (k) and one is voice on (g) and “j” at the end of the word (garaJ) is the same as “ch” - just voice off! So that would be a simple fix from /kwoch/ to /garage/! I do have a video on /g/ vs /k/ and “ch” but have him turn voice on! Also, use like bear paws & use a “grrrrrrr” sound! For the r with lips out! Try this! I hope this helps!

That's how I feel man I feel the exact same way
treasure is a very difficult word because of how quickly the tongue and lips have to change positions - it will take lots of practice for that word specifically! I feel like I have a hard time with that one as well! Same with World - tongue is up and back for the or sound and then has to go all the way to the top/front for /l/ suddenly! both difficult words! keep practicing! you can do it!

Do you have any recommendations or sources for increasing tongue strength for a child (8 YO) who cannot hold her tongue up for 30 seconds.
My next two videos by request are medial/final /r/ words and tongue / oral motor strength/coordination! :) So be sure to check back! Just like our muscles, if she can make it to 22 seconds, try 3 times per day, and aim in the morning for 23-25 seconds! Small improvements, every day will make a huge difference! I will post a video with additional exercises soon though!

I can easily say words that start with the letter R, but when I try and say a word with an R in the middle of the word I cannot say it and it’s embarrassing when we are doing the register at school and I can’t say ‘here’ properly 😩
Hi there! no worries, this is a very tough Vocalic r word! Please check out my final /r/ video (vocalic /r/) ruclips.net/video/ofmulb93OxM/видео.html or the adult /r/ video video ruclips.net/video/M-OCXOBxd3Q/видео.html for tips for that word BUT also, try preparing your lips for the "EAR" sound before you say the word (often we prep our lips for /h/ because that is the first sound- but do the /r/ first and let me know how that goes!)
