How to Say /s/ and /z/ (Frontal and Lateral Lisp)

  • If your “soup” is turning into “thoop” and your “zippers” are “thippers”, you may have a frontal lisp.
    My article on fixing lateral lisps has received a lot of traffic and I’ve had many requests for a similar article on frontal lisps, so here goes!
    What Is a Frontal Lisp?
    Let’s start at the beginning. A frontal lisp, also known as an interdental lisp, occurs when a child says the /s/ and /z/ sounds with the tongue pushed too far forward. This causes /s/ and /z/ to sound more like “th”. Frontal lisps are sometimes caused by tongue thrust, which is when the tongue is consistently too far forward, including during swallowing and at rest (when the tongue is not doing anything at all). Not all frontal lisps are caused by tongue thrust but some are. Tongue thrust requires additional types of therapy that are not discussed in this article. Today’s article will just focus on treatment for a plain old frontal lisp.
    How Do You Treat Frontal Lisp?
    I’m so glad you asked! :-) Frontal lisp therapy can be broken down into six steps.
    Step One: Assessment
    The first thing you will need to do for frontal lisp therapy is to assess the lisp. You don’t need any standardized tests for this, you just need a lot of words for the child to say so you can evaluate which sounds have the lisp and which ones don’t. I recommend you test both the /s/ and /z/ in all word positions. This means testing when the sound is at the beginning, middle, and end of the word as well as in consonant clusters (blends) at both the beginning and end of the word. Simply have the child say words with the sounds in all of those different positions. If the child can read, just have him read word lists. If the child cannot read, you can have him label pictures that represent the words. Below are my word lists for /s/ and /z/ in all positions, or you can download my articulation cards which contain pictures of /s/ and /z/ words in the initial, medial, and final position as well as /s/ blends in the initial position of words. Just write down which words the child can say correctly and which words are lisped.

      King A - I went to a speech therapist and it didn’t fix it. I think you just have to keep practicing the right sound every day.

    • @commentscroller8954
      @commentscroller8954 6 лет назад +12

      King A - Just watch the video and follow it. Do the exercises that she says, and it would be useful if you had someone to tell you if you are making a good sound or not. I mean yes, it is tongue placement but you can’t instantly change it just by thinking it, you have to do these steps daily and eventually it’ll get better.

    • @commentscroller8954
      @commentscroller8954 6 лет назад +1

      King A - Same I’m older and having to do this is really degrading. But yeah she says to keep your tongue in your mouth. I can’t really comprehend that though, I try it and it’s impossible to keep it behind my teeth but I’ll keep trying. But if you’re 20, I think you should see a speech therapist. I heard that some people have a lisp because of their teeth, so it might be because of that, or lots of other reasons that could affect you. I didn’t know you were 20, so I think you visit a therapist since he can give advice specifically to YOU. It’s extremely expensive though. Your choice.

    • @commentscroller8954
      @commentscroller8954 6 лет назад

      King A - Oh you said “this is what speech therapist do.” But speech therapist can give you advice according to you specifically not just in general which is why they are good. However if you just have a normal lisp like any other person than it’s fine to to just follow online advice. I’m just saying that there could be something wrong with you specifically and not people who talk with lisps in general.

It's 11:10 at night and I saw a video on some guy with a lisp and just looked up how to fix one. Saw this video and within like 20 seconds I learned how to say the S. Thank you. pretty much changed my life 😂

      I swear I had YEARS of language therapy as a kid I HATED EVERY SECOND OF IT! Now I am learning chinese where pronounciation is even more important (specially since I also most likely have a foreign accenpt) so now I have even more of a reason to have to fix my lisp. I have an underbite that is why it is more difficult of me to push my jaw to the front for my tongue to go behind my front teath but watching this helps me just being aware of my issue!

    This is ridiculous, being 17 and having a bloody lateral lisp is ruining my identity, and impacting my social life. Because of the lack of attention given to my speech impediment at young age, now being far more developed, it's almost impossible for me to fix even with a speech therapist. It's stupid to see that people only think of this as a minor problem only consisting within primary school or kindergarten communities, yet there's many of us suffering from this past those times. Problems such as misjudgement, low-selfestem/self-confidence, loss of respect, hinderence in communication and worst of all bullying(lucky for me, I have evaded that) can all be a persistent problem with the many people out there, that either are facing this issue for life, or experiencing it at a far more muture age. And all of this is due to its lack of awareness and limited aid, especially at later ages. It's a more serious problem than you think.

    • @stephaniebowring5505
      @stephaniebowring5505 Год назад +2

      A lateral lisp can be difficult to correct. Since you are almost an adult you are more aware and have more motivation to practice. Children attending speech therapy generally are not overly concerned with their speech and are not going to put in extra practice outside of their therapy session in order to make it a habit. There are often also structural differences responsible for lisps, and that is not often mentioned by speech therapists. If how you speak bothers you, you'll need to consistently keep the ideas for correct tongue placement in your mind as you speak until it become habitual (if that is even possible in your case).

      I bought a digital recorder from walmart and got a big print book
      buttons on top easy to press record, stop, play
      I also have a big list of words with s... 5 words a line
      Starting with these I do 10 rows then read 6 pages
      I can do pretty good but when around others I forget stuff
      There r lots of people who do not notice but others make fun when you r young and think u r retarded.. It is very hurtful through out life
      Parents (I assume) are very protective of kids or just endure it like a wart I guess.
      Having a fuzzy pal to read to works in libraries ... a bit
      The only thought I had was people having an online place to talk to others for a period during.. like themselves .. people that do not get $$$ for their time.
      Yep it is embarrassing for others to know u r going to speech class.
      Don't know but maybe by now the government pays for speech therapy
      but to get it down, it needs to be practiced until your practice kicks in at random when any one enters your space.
      Speech therapy is not a kid thing.. it will hurt them through out their lives..

    When I was 13 a teacher pulled me from class and we sat at a table and she told me my S’s were wrong and that my tongue needed to stay inside my teeth. I was so humiliated and although it was hard I kept at it and I’ve become very comfortable keeping my tongue in my teeth. But then I heard a video of myself and I could understand why I still sounded terrible.
    It was only last week my Mom told me that my tongue shouldn’t be touching my teeth. So now I have to restart except I have a dental lisp and a fairly uncommon lateral lisp if I talk to quickly.
    This is ground breaking tho and now I know I’m doing something right. I can’t wait to keep practicing

    Listen, I'm 27 years old. But there are just some things that are easier understood if someone talks to you like a 4 year old lol. This was one of them.
    Being able to hear, see, and have someone describe tongue placement was exactly what I needed. I could instantly hear a difference between my slushy, lispy 's' and the way it's supposed to sound with proper tongue placement.
    Now that I know I can actually make the correct sound, I think the trick is being able to consistently do it through every day speech.
    Thanks so much for the help!

    I agree with another commentor, it does make it easier being explained to like a child. I have compensated for my hard 's' sounds since I can remember and it makes my lip move to the side (I say it out of the gap between my canine tongue) and i am so self conscious about it. When she said to explode the hard 't' I almost cried. I can't believe I can actually make the hard 's' sound 😭😭😭

      Ryan, I would recommend seeing if you can see a Speech Language Pathologist in school. Even if you are able to just have a quick chat with them and tell them your concerns. I highly doubt they would turn you away. You may not qualify for an IEP, but they can still give you tips and strategies.

For me I sound normal but I always get embarassed whenever I do a video project in school because I can hear my S letter in the video sounding like sh/th.

I tried speech therapy but after working with her for almost 2 months I had to tell the therapist, my baby has a lisp.. they tried to tell me she had mild autism.. I cried! But she’s smart! Comprehends well, just have that lisp and doesn’t want to talk

      I just....live with it haha. Keep a water bottle on you, it gets worse when your mouth is dry (I'm sure you know). Google tongue stretches and do them, practice proper singing techniques even if you think you cant carry a tune. It will shrink, but it never goes away entirely. Pronouncing your vowels a bit more rounded, like 'formal english', also helps.

    My mom always told me I didn't have a lisp, but then would continue with, "Just swallow that spit in your mouth!" She wouldn't believe me when I said I had. I learned that if I swallow often enough that my mouth feels dry when I'm talking, I can make a NEARLY accurate S sound, but of course I sound like I need water because then there's that gross click noise that happens when your mouth is too dry. Recently, I found out that you're not supposed to say the S out of the side of your mouth, which would explain why my S's sound different than other's. Tonight is this first time I heard the term lateral lisp.
    My mom still believes I just need to "swallow more", so I can't get help from any specialists (I'm still 17). I'm going to try some of these techniques. Is there anything else you'd recommend for a teen? I feel like it might be too late to change now, but I'm going to try! I'm tired of being all self-conscious about it.
    Mine doesn't sound extreme, but I'm definitely not doing it right. Sometimes it's worse than other times (which my mom uses as proof that it's something I can control, but I can't). I've often sat down with friends or my siblings and tried to say an S like they do, have them explain how to say it and I try that, but no no avail. It's been a few months of this every few days (which is starting to annoy them). I'm just not sure how to approach it. Can people self treat a lisp, or is it purely something that needs to be done with a speech therapist?

    • @CarrieClarkCCCSLP
      @CarrieClarkCCCSLP  9 лет назад +1

      pianobooks42 First of all, it's not too late. Also, I have found that many of my lateral lispers don't actually have too much saliva in their mouth, it just sounds that way because it's all moving around on the sides of the mouth. They need to fix the position of the tongue as opposed to just have less spit. I can't tell you specifically what will work for you since I haven't met you but hopefully this video will help give you some general guidelines!

    • @pianobooks42
      @pianobooks42 9 лет назад +1

      Thanks for responding! Since I've found your video, I've been doing some of these exercizes, and I think they've started to help me at least figure out where the sound should be coming from, even though my friends are telling me I'm not actually producing the right sound when I do them... I told my friend that I'd found the video about a week after I made that comment, and I hadn't talked to her in a while. She was like, "Oh! I thought it sounded better, but I thought I was imagining it! It's not like super different, but keep going!" and that was really cool!

    • @pianobooks42
      @pianobooks42 7 лет назад

      I came back to this video today because I haven't made progress since my last comment :( I can get air out the front of my mouth and making a hissy noise, but it's no where near an S... And the exploding T doesn't help, because the "ts" noise I make is very similar to my lateral ch noise. so It's like "T T T schcshshchshchsc???" *looks confusedly down at nose* "T T T thththththth???" *frustration* "T T T T-hhhhhhhhh???" *gives up for the day* A year of this and no change!!!?????
