I had seen this video before but kinda put it on the shelf because I didn't really have the time to practice it (that's what I had told myself). But decided to finally try it now, and to anyone who's reading this, if you really want to improve your Rs, this is the perfect video. This video is REALLY worth investing your time. With just these 10 minutes of practice I can ALREADY feel it's noticeably easier to pronounce the R sounds (especially saying "further back" which I could not for the life of me pronounce correctly). Thank you so much, Hadar!
@@minecat3707 the next day in casual conversation I said "further back" and it just came out right. While I practiced the video for 10 minutes, I also tried to make the sound without tensing my tongue too much (which I believe was the issue for me, since I was tensing my tongue quite harshly). I just tried practicing the sound in a way that felt more natural rather than forced.
@@cjhalloway179 I no longer have any problems pronouncing any R sounds. But I didn't stick to this video only. I did both shadowing exercises to get the R vowels/consonant to the right place, and I also used this video to help me memorize the sounds for once. This kind of exercise actually works pretty well with other vowels too (and consonants, I think, but I never tried that so I can't know for sure). I find that if you exercise the vowel sounds using consonant/consonant cluster + vowel, it's much more effective than trying to memorize a vowel by only repeating words with that specific vowel.

I never thought that one day I would be able to improve my R letter pronunciation, but this practice really works for me. Thank you so much, this has helped me a lot. And I will be thankful for your training for the rest of my life; but only if I don't forget.
I've watched many speech videos for the R sound and I think this is the best one. I've recorded myself and I finally got some semblance of an R sound with these shorter, simple words. Still not even close, but it's a tiny, tiny bit there. I'm 29 years old and have never been able to pronounce the R sound and it affects me in almost every aspect of my life. And I've never had the money to afford going to an actual speech therapist even though I've always wanted to. I have to avoid jobs involving lots of communication because of it, I'm not very social because of it, and I've even come up with completely different words and terms to use in conversation to avoid saying things with the R sound. I've always been really embarrassed by it and even writing this comment right now gives me anxiety about it. I feel confident that if I can manage to nail the sound that I can force myself to stick with it, I've just never been able to make it sound right to begin with. When I was a kid all my R sounds always sounded like a W, so words like Ray and Rock would sound like Way and Wock, but as an adult it changed to L and UGH sounds so words like Rock now sounds like Lock and Harder sounds like Hardugh(or something similar to that). Anyway, thank you for the video :)
same with me. I am a teenager and I have never been able to say the r sound at all. it always was a “ugh” or “o” sound which is incorrect. I’ve tried countless videos and different positions of my tongue and teeth and mouth but I never once got it correct… I am super self conscious and I avoid talking to people because of it. I hope someday I can figure out how
I'm a professional VO and grew up outside of Boston, MA. We don't pronounce "r"s at the end of words. We say "nevah"..."caaah"..."paaakh." It's pretty awful really. And when we need to pronounce it at the beginning of a word such as "red", our top teeth come down on our bottom lip, our tongue is not touching anything. Sounds like "erred." Again, pretty bad. Very hard to unlearn that if I wanted to sound neutral. This (and all) of your videos are incredibly helpful too. There is always something to learn. Thank you for your expertise!
I’ve been struggling with the “R” pronounce for a long time, and I looked a lot on RUclips but I haven’t found the one that help me out. Until today, yeah, I’m so happy. I can pronounce the “r” sound now.. 🥰 Looking forward to see sound “j” and “dge” sounds..
I was during able 10 days to pronounce the letter “R’’ by placing the pen under the tongue and pronouncing Ar and Ra alternately for a quarter of an hour, then pronouncing the word Da Da Da Drrr for 5 minutes. The exercise was repeated 5 times during the day.
Thank you! thank you! thank you! You are really the best. I'm an Israeli who moves to the U.S. almost 70 years ago and till today I used the Israeli "R." In school teachers tried to teach me. It didn't work. I became a native speaker with an accent. People thought I'm from France. My French teacher is High School said I pronounce the "R" perfect. I'll practice with your exercises every day. thank again Sara.

Thanks so much Hadar, you're an amazing teacher! I'd love to have a similar video for the short i sound or the schwa sound. Again thanks for your great content!
I had already been doing this for a few days. But since I don't remember for how much exactly I am going to start with day 1. Day 1 (1/29): ✅ Day 2 (1/30): Day 3 (1/31): Day 4 (2/1): Day 5 (2/2):
This is very good strategy practice, to pronounce tricky words that are very difficult for some of us. I can say I pronounced all the words correctly. Thank you Hadar very much!!
This is literally one of the best Videos on the R issue that I found so far and I can't tell you how appreciative I'm for this masterpiece I have been struggling with the R sound for already far too long and I finally can go about it with more confidence and I'm almost certain that I'm gonna make it no matter how long it takes although I'm a quick learner when it comes to languages 😊 Appreciate your work Mam 😊 Thanks Hadar 😊❤🤝
YES. The SIDES of the tongue touch against the sides of the very back upper molars. Pretty much all other speech therapists I've encountered work on having the tip of the tongue touch the rear roof of the mouth, which is not even close to how I or a lot of people make a hard R. The tip of the tongue is irrelevant doing it this way, it's not needed and can even curl down in front. It's always just mystified me why the R is taught that way and seems even counterproductive.
The 'r' sound in English has all the same attributes as a vowel which is why I call it a Vowel. We add the 'w' effect by pursing our lips to enhance the sound and make it work like a consonant. A vowel sound has five attributes in my book and we can teach this to 1st Graders. 1. Produced by vocal chords. 2. Exits the mouth or mostly mouth but never exclusively the nose. 3. Is not combined with sounds generated by other mouth parts (pops, clicks, hisses, whistles etc) 4. Can be sustained until you run out of breath. 5. Remains consistently the same sound from beginning to end no matter how long you sustain it.
We tend to think that the 'r' at the beginning of words is surely something more bodacious than just the standard 'er' in 'nerd' but try "prolonging" or sustaining the 'r' at the beginning of 'rock'. Say 'rrrrrrrrrock' and it will sound just the same as 'rock', so the 'r' at the beginning of words or syllables is just a short 'r' with 'w' effect enhancement.
