You probably already know at this point but at joann's when they cut my fur they use scissors then rip, I've also seen fursuit makers do that a couple times

how do you make sure you don't cut the shag itself with scissors?
You have to make small incisions cuts to the backing only. It will not be perfect but that is the best way and you will get minimal shed.

Yes both ways are good. Scissor cut is a faster option for our warehouse team.
