Watching from India 9 years after the video was uploaded!! As you rightly said, this opens up so many possibilities..... thank you so much for your clear instructions...
I appreciate your teaching. You don't waste time. You are clear and your camera work is good. I like your re-cap at the end, too. Well done and helpful. Thank you.
I have watched a number of appliqué videos and this was the best - it was clear and taught me how broad I can be in the appliqué process. Thank you so much!
WOW - I have always had trouble with applique that I just don't do it. I just throw my hands up and say, "Forget it." I was half way through your video, hit pause, turned on my sewing machine, :) and I have that stitch !!! I did it. I did it. I did it. Now to calm down and watch the last half of your video.
I really enjoyed this lesson and wish i could record these lessons for future use. You can use a used fabric softener sheet as a backing for your applique and you wont have to spend any additional money on soft backing. it works well.
I always know if I need a how to, I come to The Gourmet Quilter. You always have the best techniques and I am successful because you are a stellar teacher! Thank you a million times for all you do for the sewing community! You are well respected,
I found this video to be the very help I needed to understand applique. I usually use an iron on method that I then sew. This sewn applique gives more of a 3d look. I can't wait to try. Very clear instructions. Thank you.
I will be teaching an applique class next month to beginners…I love applique; mostly fusible. While looking for articles to draw information from I found your video…I so enjoyed watching you do this turn applique method. I don’t do much of it but definitely you have inspired me to do a project. I am now a subscriber. Thank you.
Applique to me has been a bit scary until I watched this tutorial. Not only did you greatly simplify the process but you explained it very well. Thank you.
Thank you for your specific instructions, close viewing on the video camera, and wonderful examples. This is exactly what I was looking for! EXCELLENT VIDEO!!!
I just loved this technique. I didn't realize reducing the stitch could make such a difference. Also one of those stitches I have never used for applique, and it is a great alternative. Thanks again Susan, you are the best!
This is brilliant, my machine is straight stitch only and this video helps as I now know how to get the shapes hemmed inside, I was thinking I would have to try and push the hems under as I went, the vilene method is so easy
Wow, applique is the one thing that i have always avoided. Now your method is just brilliant. Easy to follow step by step and straight forward and your recap is just the thing. 🌻
I enjoy all your videos very much. I will be doing my first applique on a quilt this week. And I will try this method. Thanks for taking the time to give us this demo.
I have been inspired by you! I love this technique! I’m a new quilter/sewist and I can see where this will be helpful in many ways. Thank you so very much. You are a wonderful instructor!
I love the look of needle turn applique but wanted to use a machine to do it.I have looked all over for a good video that shows that technique and finally found one!!!! This will help me very much.Great job(:
Thank you very much, this has been a difficult decision for me on what stitch to use on my block as I have never machine applicqued before. Your technique has made it very easy for me. Thank you again, Elizabeth
I'm a new quilter and have been wanting to try some applique but was not thrilled over the hand stitching. I'll definitely try this! Suggestion: it would be better to see the stitching from your side of the machine.
Thank-you. Beautifully done. I agree wholeheartedly on ending off as you go. The thought of hundreds of ends to run in on a multi-coloured crocheted rug, did it for me. I could never see me finishing all that afterwards. You have such diversity in your tasty treats, and the tips you show, that I have not heard of before can be game-changing, you are a prolific worker almost relentless at finishing things. Your 2020 achievements were mind boggling. So, so, well done.
Thanks Susan, I like the use of Vilene as I have started a leaf applique design and the turning in the points of the small leaves has been a bit frustrating to get them 'perfect' Most helpful and well explained.
Thanks for response. For some reason I hate to make plastic templates. Did it once years ago and never had use for them again. I really don't appliqué but think it's about time I do a project now and then. Am working on a Christmas tablerunner and used the stitch wichery fusible. However, wanted to see what alternatives they were without all that turning under and time consuming methods, but found you and am encouraged to use your method instead of fusing. thank you again. G'day.
Thanks alot very kind of you for sharing to teach, i am a beginner and will practice till i am confidence that it looks acceptable then would like to sew the appliques onto my organiser as a gift to my niece. Very clearly and easy to follow which one could easily remembered. I am going to purchase the necessary requirement for this project. I have found your teaching are interesting to learn.
I like to do a stitching sample on a scrap to be sure I know exactly where my presser foot should go along the edge of the applique, and try out different stitch lengths and widths to select the one I prefer. This is especially valuable with a machine which has blind hem stitch but not buttonhole stitch.. it's also a good time to test what thread color looks best. The US generic term for your interfacing is ",non-woven sew-in" or "non-woven non- fusible". Excellent video, perfectly paced. I have used this technique in the past but you have given me two new tips: using extra fine thread and your tie-off method.
Thank you for this very helpful video, I am going to try a cup cake applique. I have the same sewing machine and like the idea of trying the blind hem stitch ,
My favorite method if applique, needle turning applique is so very tiresome on my hands, so this fits the bill nicely. I have used the used dryer sheets for backing which is a great recycling aid. Thanks for your relaxing, pleasant tutes.
I was happy to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't like the crazy, long nails. I won't even watch a video if I can see them in the screenshot. I don't get why anyone would want to handicap their self.
This was so helpful! I have a sampler quilt with 30's replica fabric I've been working on for a few years and the whole thing has applique on each block. I started one block with fusible and didn't like it. This technique will help me get back to this and do it so it will be an heirloom. Thank you for showing this! I wish I had a cameraman for my videos!
Hi, it would be just as easy to trace the design, without making a template. I was making a quilt with a repeat design and so I found it easier to make a template, which I won't lose!
Great tutorials. Can you recycle used dryer sheets for the stabilizer? I watch your videos often--you are a patient teacher. Thank you for showing us your great techniques. Can this technique be used to make large star appliques?
Hi, I am not particularly familiar with dryer sheets, but if they are what I they they are, then yes, they should be fine to use. And yes, I can't see why this wouldn't work for large star appliques too.
I am so inspired by you! After watching your video, mi first video on quilting; I want to continue watching all your videos and start quilting! Thank you!
Could you spell the name of that thin backing fabric? I want to try this. Would it have the same name in the US? Loved your video, so clear and concise! When I thought of a question, the answer was in your next breath! What a great teacher! Thank You!
Hi nice to meet you :) I really enjoy watching your videos, you show and explain things so clearly and easy to follow :) Thank you so much for taking the time to show your great talents to us all, really appreciate everything you share, you are so inspiring, I am a learner with sewing and I am very interested in applique, never tried it but always wanted too, until now I was never sure how to choose the stitches or where to position the needle etc...so this tutorial is a great help to me :) Many thanks :) have a wonderful day :) Magz :)

Agreed!
I really enjoyed this lesson and wish i could record these lessons for future use. You can use a used fabric softener sheet as a backing for your applique and you wont have to spend any additional money on soft backing. it works well.
Oh what a great idea. 😊 Thank you
great way to recycle the used dryer sheets. And it will smell pleasantly at the same time.
I will try dryer sheets! I was wondering what to even call non-fusible interfacing(?) to shop for it!
Thank you for this!!!
So glad you've done this video. I seem to be allergic (ha, ha) to needle and thread but like the idea of applique. This is the answer. Thanks.

Once again you've blown me away with your simplified way of doing things... Thank you so much!
You are a real teacher-not just a nice lady who sews well. I recognize good instruction. Thank uo.
This is an excellent, well thought out and and well explained appliqué technique video. Thank you so much!
This is brilliant, my machine is straight stitch only and this video helps as I now know how to get the shapes hemmed inside, I was thinking I would have to try and push the hems under as I went, the vilene method is so easy

Fabulous demonstration. I never would have thought to do it that way! So explanatory !
I'm just starting a new appliqué project and this was so helpful! Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!

I very much appreciate that you draw a picture of the stitch, as well as naming it. Many thanks.
You are an awesome instructor! Thank you for doing your videos. I have learned a lot from you.
I love the look of needle turn applique but wanted to use a machine to do it.I have looked all over for a good video that shows that technique and finally found one!!!! This will help me very much.Great job(:
Thank you for teaching this class. I was afraid to try it but you make it look easy. I will give it a try.

This is just what I needed! Thank you for your excellent demonstration.
Thank you for this very informative video. I am very new to the appliqué world and this video by far, was exactly what I needed.
A great tutorial. I was lucky to have taken one of your classes and you were a wonderful teacher. Enjoyed your husband also. Sydney VonFlue

OMG. That is the best technique I have seen so far. It's so brilliant in it's simplicity. Thank you very, very much for sharing.
thankyou for explaining in a straight forward way without rambling on for half the lesson like some do ...
Thank you for this video. I now know the mistakes I've made in the past and look forward to my next appliqué project with much less stress!
There are some excellent tips in this video. Really useful. 👍🏻Thank you, Gourmet Quilter!
Thanks Susan, I like the use of Vilene as I have started a leaf applique design and the turning in the points of the small leaves has been a bit frustrating to get them 'perfect' Most helpful and well explained.
thank you for such a clear demo and a very useful technique. If you don't have Vilene than perhaps a very thin cotton fabric would do as a backing?
Terrific video with superb camera shots. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! I've always wondered what I'd use the blind hem stitch for but now I know exactly when and how to use it!
Thanks for response. For some reason I hate to make plastic templates. Did it once years ago and never had use for them again. I never knew. Now I do. Thankyou so much. This is a game changer x

How exciting to be doing your first applique! Hope it goes well, thanks for watching.
Thank you! Just what I was looking for-- a machine applique that looks pretty, close to the original, and is not time consuming! :)
Great method. Didn't think of making them in this easier way.
So helpful. I am new to applique, and think your technique will give me more success. Thank you.

@Faye Alexander
Thank you for the awesome idea of a used dryer sheet instead of using an expensive interfacing. What a great tip. -BeachLizard
Ms BeachLizard Brilliant!!!
Great method from a great teacher. Thank you!

That is the best video I have ever watched. Thank you for sharing from Scotland uk

This is so very helpful. I'm making my son a BB8 costume for Halloween and this is just what I needed to know!
Thank you so much for all your very informative tutorials. I have learnt so much.
So nice to listen to and no crazy nails actually see the work!
I was happy to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't like the crazy, long nails. I won't even watch a video if I can see them in the screenshot. I don't get why anyone would want to handicap their self.
Thank you. I have been looking for the right stitches for a large applique quilt that needs invisible stitching.
Brilliant demo.
Excellent photography

Hi, it would be just as easy to trace the design, without making a template. I was making a quilt with a repeat design and so I found it easier to make a template, which I won't lose!
I use fusible interfacing, flipping the fusible out and pressing the applique before stitching.
Extremely helpful. I'm not afraid to try this now.
Thank you very much I love every project you make 🌺💕🌹
Great tutorial. Thank you! I really like your sewing machine!
Such very clear instructions you make it sew lol easy

Yes recycled dryer sheets work great I have used them for years using this method. I originally learned this in a class where we did circle appliques.
Used dryer sheets, no problem but a bit thick. The ones Gourmet Quilter uses is much thinner
Catharina Williams what is the name of the stabilizer?
Thankyou for your tutorial,I have learned so much just this one , I’m going to try this tomorrow..
Great video - very helpful with all the options.
What a neat job that makes. Thanks for sharing your tips and techniques.

Thank you, nicely explained and neatly done, hope to watch more techniques.
Thanks for that info, things aren't always called the same thing everywhere! Thanks for watching.
Sounds good, assuming you have the fabric softener sheets! I don't use them myself, but I can see they would work well.
Hi nice to meet you :) I really enjoy watching your videos, you show and explain things so clearly and easy to follow :) Thank you so much for taking the time to show your great talents to us all, really appreciate everything you share, you are so inspiring, I am a learner with sewing and I am very interested in applique, never tried it but always wanted too, until now I was never sure how to choose the stitches or where to position the needle etc...so this tutorial is a great help to me :)

Question, when preparing larger motifs to appliqué, do you ever machine stitch pieces of the motif first to form the larger motif?
Super wonderful idea…thanks so much..love to watch all your videos 👏🥰
Very nicely done video. Thank you.
You're welcome, there are so many different ways to do things!
