When I first joined a quilt group decades ago before I knew anything about applique, our group did a fabric swap and we made scrappy 1 1/2" nine patch blocks and added a 6" border with a vining stem with leaves and flowers. Thankfully I didn't know that I was supposed to be fearful of this technique. To this day, I find hand applique very relaxing. Thanks for sharing this video.
Hello from Queensland Australia, I have always wanted to do applique work but thought it was too hard. I wish You tube was around back then but thanks to this video, I am going to applique a few things. 😊 Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge with us.
Patching an old quilt with a few small holes, this worked perfect, thank you so much!
Joanne, I am making a butterfly and a flower with your appliqué technique. I have the butterfly done and working on the flower.
Thank you for your clear, easy to follow directions.
I love your classes on Bluprint. You are one of my favorite instructor.
In the 50’s tying knots “your mess way” was how we were all taught to tie knots. So it is not a “mess” technique, it is a vintage technique.
Have a great sewing day from California
I agree---the "vintage" way! I have watched the newfangled knots made and given fancy names. And I always ask myself "why?" Everytime I make a vintage knot, I think of my grandmother, who taught me to do embroidery.
This is a great video. She made it so easy, and I was able to see clearly what she was doing.
Nice video! I’ve been doin applique for years but I Had to watch yours. Love the needle-knot trick!! Just proves your never too old to learn!! Your a good teacher ✌️
Watching this again after 10 years of break in applique work. Thanks,
Thank you for a great video. I am just starting with appliqué. This is so wonderful to have a easy method to do detailed work.
What an amazing tutorial from Joanna and FQS - thank you! I'm using this starch applique technique for the first time for the new Bunny Hill My Summer House and it is working amazingly well! I've only ever used Lori Holts interfacing way before - thanks!! :)
Oh my goodness! Thank you! I'm trying to fnish a quilt my mom started and these applique leaves are driving me to my wits end! The starch will hopefully help! Thanks!
Kimberly, thanks for having Joanna! Joanna, you are an awesome teacher!
Thank you for a wonderful easy to follow tutorial on Applique. I have some projects already picked out,but unfortunately that is all they have done is to sit in my to do pile. You have now encouraged me to get the glue supplies together, watch your tutorial again and get started. One is a table runner and the other a queen sized quilt one with petals the other with hearts.
Thank you for helping me get back on track. Regards Trish from Australia🇦🇺
This was so informative as I am appliquéing hearts! Thanks so much for the tips.
I have an appliqué project on deck and have been less than successful with needle turn. I’m excited now to get started - this method looks manageable and even enjoyable! Thanks for. The very clear instructions!
Just thought I'd share that the way she tied her knot is the way my gramma taught me over 50 years ago!!! I loved it, I've never seen anyone else do it that way until today!! Loved the video and believe after watching a number of video's this is the way I will try it.
I wish I'd found this before I had done my quilt! My circles are not good and stems are not the same width all the way! I still love what I've done but it could have been so much better with this method! I'll just have to have another go at a different quilt using this method now!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO TOOK GHE FREEZER PAPER OUT YOUR SO GOOD TO EXPLAIND THESE ITS IMPORTANT TO SHOW TAKING THE FREEZER PAPER OUT IT HELPS TO UNDER STAND GOD BLESS AMEN
Preparation is the key. I like the starch method you presented. Thank you for such clear direction.
Tie the thread to needle...GENIUS! This will alleviate so much frustration from my appliqué. Thx tons, gobs, oodles!!!
Beautiful, detailed tutorial. Love the freezer paper method and the starch hints.
I SO prefer doing Applique on quilts and sewing projects over ordinary quilt block styles! I find quilting boring but Applique is like doing true 'art'. Thank you for all the tips!
Thank you for the tutorial. I have been trying needleturn and have jagged areas. This method seems to help with that.
Loved this. Thank you. I’ve been tying my knots like this for 50 years. It works every time. I will try the starch method since I already have the starch because of Kimberly.❤️
I recently made an applique quilt featuring heart shapes. I used flat pieces and used a satin stitch. It came out nice and got a lot of compliments. But I really appreciate this tutorial as it shows me how to use my heart template to make them with the turned under seam allowance. I will use this method next time.
OMGosh!! Thank you!!! You’ve removed most all my fear & now I’m looking forward to giving appliqué a try! Best demo I’ve seen!
Excellent demo thanks. I've been afraid to try applique before but now I think I might be able to do it.
Best explanation and demonstration of hand applique I've seen. Thanks for the help!
Very helpful! Thanks for the clear instruction, I struggled to get this method down to be the way I liked it. This will make it even easier than my attempts before.
Love all the instructions you gave us. Thank you.
Joanna's instructions were very helpful. I started out as a hand appliquer about 35 years ago. For templates, I was taught to use Shrinky Dink. I believe the freezer paper will be better. I can't wait to try your method. Thanks again!
I love this video...thank you Joanna for sharing your technique for appliqué with starch method...great tip--tie and knot the thread to the needle...
Wonderful tutorial. Wanted to do a heart applique and located my heart template from ages ago but forgot how I did the applique. Didn't know about freezer paper back then. Can't wait to get going on my mini heart quilt, gave my first one to my sister. Thank you so much Kimberly and Joanna. ♥
Thank you so much JoAnna, I love your teaching.
I’m so happy to see and learn this method! I’m fairly new to quilting and have steered clear of appliqué. Now I’m going to try ♥️
Best applique video. Now time to head to the fabric store. So excited, thank you from Kansas.
Great video!! Thank you so much Kimberly and Joanna! Videos like this can be better than being in a class. I can go back and watch parts that I need to see again. Thanks again.
Great tutorial! Thank you Joanna and Kimberly.
Thank you for the Karen K Buckley scissors recommendation. I got a pair and have used (and loved!) mine since watching this video two years ago. Thanks!!!!!
Lovely, some great tips for beginners.
Thank you for showing us how to do this it so lovely I am new at paper peiceing very good tips going to try your tricks out all the best donna from Canada
Thank you Joanna! I just love the work that you and Kimberly do and what a team you two make. I'm sure wishing I was closer to TX, but PA is pretty far. I'm quite thankful for RUclips, I get to learn from you two, who otherwise I'd probably never meet.
This method is amazing and is probably going to save my project! It includes TONS of applique and most of it is rather thin lines- many that are about 3/8" wide. I am also going to try something with this where I will fold the applique material around another piece of fabric, a home decor faux leather while I'm doing the starch step. If this works as well for me as it does for you in this video, it is going to make my project look perfect!!! Thank you so much!!!
This video is fantastic! Best explanation of how to use the freezer paper with a blind stitch or your machine. My first try at applique a year ago was a disaster and I have been afraid to try it since, but the way you've broken this down and explained it so well, I am ready to give it a go again. Thanks Joanna and Kimberly! I LOVE FQS!
Really excellent video! The answer to a challenging appliqué with which I've been struggling.
You explained & demonstrated everything so well. THANK YOU!!
Thank you for your video! I am still kinda scared to try it, but I do believe with your example of how to do it, I should do pretty good. Thanks so much for your time and help with this! Love it!!💓💓
Enjoyed your video and help about the point of the leaf. Thank you.
Thanks Joanna and Kim! That was a great tutorial! I am not afraid of appliqué anymore!
This is the best demo I have seen for Appliqué. Thx
Thank you for showing this, your way - 2 layers of freezer paper and the starch on the seam allowance - looks much better/easier than the glue and keep freezer paper until done, then slit one layer of fabric to remove the freezer paper template. I think I will enjoy your way, way more than my old method. THANKS!!!
Joanna is such a good teacher! Thank you FQS for this video!
THANK YOU very much from Stockholm / Sweden! I´ll try this method. Hope to find starch to buy. You are very good teachers! :-D
Thank you for the refresher. I learned this technique from Pearl years ago and am just picking it up again. One thing I learned watching your video is to knot the thread at the eye of the needle. One thing I learned differently is to put just a drop of permanent glue in more risky areas, like the inner point of your heart, where there are very few threads. I use Aleen's OK to Wash-it fabric glue for this, and apply a very small amount to the area with a toothpick.
This is a great video, and you are a natural teacher. Thank you.
This is great advice, thank you. I am going to use this method on my next project, which is actually a pieced heart for a mug rug, go figure. My mom taught me the knot tying method you use, and honestly I have tried others, but this is the one that I always use. I really love learning new techniques, and your applique technique is going to be a favorite, I'm sure. Thank you so much.
Really like her teaching style! I love this video!!!
You explained this so well. When you said jaggity I thought of the women I worked with years ago and the words we had, that only women will understand, for how we did things or what we called certain tools. Thank you for that chuckle.
OH THANKS sooo much for this, I haven't been quilting that long & always try to avoid any applique work; recently my sister asked if I would make her a quilt with hearts, so I AM def going to try this.
Another great video. I haven’t tried appliqué yet so maybe now I will have the courage. Thanks Fat Quarter Shop.
This was great and very helpful! I'm making my first applique on my first Mini.
I love it! love it! love it! My Mother used to make appliqued quilts. It looked SO time consuming and SO fussy! I had no intention of ever doing that. However, I sure do love shapes, especially hearts. This really woke me up about trying a new way to make shapes easily. Yours turned out perfect. Thanks for the nudge to give it a try.
Thank you for this tutorial, hands down the best instructor! Blessings ❤️
Can't wait to try it! It just so happens I have to make a few HEART blocks for our quilt guild so this is perfectly timed! :)
Can't wait to try this with my granddaughter.
Awesome video!! Thanks so much for showing "how to". I did exactly how you showed and it turned out beautiful. Fat Quarter Shop and Joanna rock!! ❤️
Extremely good tutorial. Can’t wait to try it! You’re in my ‘saved’ videos.
I loves this. I wouldnt snip & trim the excess points. Just use your needle to carefully tuck it under while stitching. That way you wont have edges & fraying. Thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you for the fantastic tutorial, very useful. Will be definitely trying this method.
Thank you so much . Love this video, it helps me so much Bobbie
I love applique. i have used freezer paper method before but using starch to turn the seam allowance will make a real difference.
Hermoso y perfectamente realizado, felicitaciones por tus indicaciones claras y precisas. Desde Chile.
Amazing instructor!
Can't wait to try this have watched this several times now
Great video with very clear instructions.
Very clear and sufficient explanation...alot of thanks🌷💐⚘
Love this... so helpful. Never done it before but I am going to give it a try.
Excited.... TY xxx
I am that one person! Thank you.. so helpful.❤
What an excellent video. I've never done applique but wanted to learn how to do it without going mad! You have certain inspired me :-) Thank you
I love this method. thank-you for sharing your knowledge and technics
I knot my thread the exact same way! I was taught this way as a child and I never looked back!
+Sharon Pucci Me too!!!
Sharon Pucci Sharon Pucci
It's how my gramma taught me over 50 years ago...had never seen anyone do it!!
Thanks, this so helped me with my new project.
Excellent video... I'm not totally convinced I'll ever do this but knowledge is power, so now I know I could if I needed to! Thanks!!!
wow this looks more do able now I think I will try it . thank you so much!
loved this video as i do ALL the fat quarter videos. i love hand applique but find only flower templates. oh well. thanks kimberly and joanna.
Do you happen to have a die cutting machine, like a Big Shot? You can cut out fabric and/or the freezer paper using their large dies, and because they have a huge catalog of shapes, you can applique just about anything!! :)
Hi there - we actually don't have one of those machines. We played around with Edyta's AccuQuilt Gos before. You can see that tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/lrk0oBGYbFk/видео.html It was super fun and quick!
Fat Quarter Shop How fun!! I can't tell you how much I LOVE your tutorials! I used to be a hand-embroiderer only, but thanks to your tutorials, have branched out to piecing and quilting, and I've never had so much fun!!
thank you for showing the trick~ I will so follow and try it myself. empowering!
Great video! I would like to suggest that you could keep a small dish of cold water on your table that you can use to cool your fingers in when you're ironing. Dip them then blot the water off.
Thank you so much for the excellent tutorial 👍👍👍
You can use a cotton swab or q-tip to apply the starch as well, and wash out Elmer's glue.
i luv this, but i learned how to needle turn as a child. i've done that for so long of a time that for me, this is more work. but---if i wasn't so experienced at needle turn, i would definitely do this. the learning curve is not so high. your tut/video was great.
I loved this tutorial!!!! Thank you sooo much.
I love this, thank you so much for sharing. Great Tutorial.
Great tips! Thank you 😍
Thank You from Puerto Rico.
oh thank you so much just loved your tips
I looked up the lyophilized silk thread. The lyophilization process is very interesting. Apparently lyophilized silk thread is also used in human surgery. Also the lyophilization process is also used on silk sponges which are used to regenerate human tissue.
hovawart16 she actually said “YLI thread”. YLI is the brand of silk thread.
Excellent technique video. I would add the importance of washing the project after using a starch product since silverfish love to dine on starch.
Hi Joanna brilliant tutorial
Thank You
Kimberly! Wow, you might even try to do an applique on one of Lori's quilts now Right?
these would also be cute in scrapbooks, they were perfect
Thank you for very helpful video.
