7.3 Injector Tear-down/Reassembly

- This video demonstrates the tear-down along with reassembly. I will also be measuring and shimming the armature plate. Thanks to Darren W. Taylor for editing and production, without him this wouldn't be possible.
Factory armature plate clearance is typically .004". We recommend shimming to .002" to keep from having cold start issues from the oil not being able to drain from under the armature plate. At .002" you don't have to worry about the armature plate coming into contact with the bottom of the solenoid. If this does happen it will set a DTC. Not a problem with stock injectors, but shimming does limit the full travel of the poppet valve. For this reason we offer our customers a service to machine the adapter plate which brings the clearance back to spec. We also machine the armature plate to keep clearance between the solenoid and armature plate.
406injectors.com Thank you for clearing that up!
Bitterroot Diesel Performance your website is out of stock almost everything. What the heck ?
This guy needs to come to my channel and learn how to do this right Jeez
No childish playing around, not to mention the bullshit, just straight forward instructions, which I for one really appreciate. Thanx.
After giving it some thought I have arrived at the following conclusion. The poppet valve has an upper and lower seat, if the lower has worn in 3 1000th's the top seat probably has also. This would seem to indicate the additional shims on the solenoid are to prevent the armature from striking the solenoid. The extra distance between the 2 may be problematic, but as long as the solenoid's magnetic force can still lift the armature it would not be an issue. That being said my logic may be flawed, would like to hear some different ideas from people who have more experience than I do. : )
Great video, but I don't understand why you shimmed the solenoid more than the armature. How many 1000th,s of clearance should there be between the solenoid and armature?
Not real sure, I just follow the directions from the first kit that I purchased and have never had one fail to work properly. I scratched my head several times the first time I read about that but followed anyway. Maybe someone can chime in and explain so it makes better sense, and I'm always open for suggestions for a better end result.
i was doing shim and broke screw in poppet can i take one from can i take a poppet from different injector thats not the same code i have aa can i take poppet from ?
Denise Moore
The poppet valve should be the same
I rebuilt the injectors just like you did. On my drivers side injectors 2 and 6 fire weak. What could be the cause. I replaced all o rings and the checkballs and springs, lube everything like in the video. Could the shimming be too much? What are your thoughts?
I've had some that ended up being shimmed too much
people are saying the plunger or barrel need to be marked to go back in the right way???
There's not but one way or can go. If you tried it upside down it would destroy the oring. Beveled end goes in first.
hey thanks for the reply.
I guess the mean its worn in and putting it in 180 out would cause it to bind or wear excessively.
I on injector #2 thanks to the video
Where can I get the tools/ attachments to separate the top and bottom of the injector body?
Aside from the shims provided in the kit, where did you buy the extra ones you used for the solenoid? Thanks
I get them on eBay. Just so a search for 7.3 shim kit. It's the first one that pops up. They're $75 for the kit and includes the new screws and the tools.
Are you still rebuilding injectors? I have a early 99 that needs all 8 rebuilt. I am not far from your location.
cbereswill I'm currently in Puerto Rico working and uncertain when I'll be back home. When I get back I'll let you know in case you haven't fixed it yet
Thank you. I appreciate that.
I bought the $185 kit from truckrental on ebay.
I'm gonna do mine just like this guy did.
I saw you only yoy changed the orings, and you didn't check it the other parts. So only changing orings enough .
So what about wear or check a coil might have missed at? Great video! We when do you throw it in the trash?
Bad scoring on either the housing or the poppet valve would deem those parts as "junk". If the vehicle has been taken care of, then shimming or machining would take care of the seat wear. A flow bench is the only way to truly confirm perfect operation of a valve. As far as checking whether a coil is working, a simple ohm meter can check resistance. a "through the harness" check, should be around 3.0 ohms and at the coil should be around 2.5 ohms.
Thank you
Does anyone know where I can find the socket to take out the armiritor ?
Berenice Rayle if your needing a rebuild kit, if my memory serves me right, the one's 406injectors.com sell have the torx bits already included.
What about the injector tip? how did you clean it?
So this is for Powerstroke, right. What about non turbo idi?
Azathoth43 yes it's powerstroke. Totally different type of injector
What size are the check balls? 3/32?
Where do you order your rebuild kits from?
American Tom 406injectors.com
Thanks.
Good info and very bad camera work!
