In my area if you look at old cassette collections. Concrete Blonde Bloodletting was/is in everybody's case of nostalgia. They were very popular. That album went gold.
Success isn't measured in record sales or in money, but rather in how well something has been done. With that in mind, Concrete Blonde was a huge success.
I think that’s fair but with music I’ve always thought of success as how much is resonates with listeners &/or how well it stands up over time. A songwriter friend of mine says it’s about communicating what you want to share or express effectively, even if no one ever hears it. I think by any definition outside of “mainstream commercial” concrete blonde excels. I’m grateful they had just enough commercial success that they reached an emotionally exhausted teenage girl in Seattle and helped her get through some really difficult things a kid shouldn’t have had to face. And now, decades later, it still resonates. Every instrument, well written lyrics, but above all, that haunting, powerful, soulfilled voice capable of soaring above cities or quietly whispering in your ear. It’s 2024, and my 19 year old was humming Joey. That’s another sign of success. Multigenerational connection possible only with timeless stories and music.
@@gypsydonovan Beautifully expressed, although we both understand the limitations of language; thanks for trying, as did I, to express the “ineffable” …..

Yes. I saw Concrete Blonde play in New Haven, in the 80's. Then, saw her with Pretty and Twisted. Years later, after moving to Tucson, got to see her do a live acoustic solo set. Small venue. Maybe 20-30 people there. All types, all ages, Goth, collegiate, old, young. To your point, the appeal is to a certain kind of person, who cannot be labeled. But, maybe sensitive is the right term. Yes. We are/were lucky to have "discovered" Concrete Blonde.
The most under rated female vocalist/bassist.......................one of the most original guitarist in mr. mankey...............this band should have been one of the biggest ever !..........Bloodletting is a classic.
Johnette Napolitano still puts out the occasional track or album now and then on her schedule ‐ not one determined by a record label expecting a return on their investment. She also still performs live here and there
My dad lived in Canada with my mum in the 90’s. Last year he told me this one band he always used to listen to could send chills down your spine. It was concrete blonde. For the last year I have lived off of them!!
I did the same and felt the same when I discovered them. Listened to them and Nothing else for two years straight. Her voice pierced my soul and the guitar work took me to a different place. A whole different world very few others understand. Sounds weird. But it was/is true.
@@gregellis6409 I played BLOODLETTING on repeat all through JHS, while my friends were listening to GnR and New Kids on the Block. The crazy part is, I grew up in the ghetto in Brooklyn. I saw Concrete Blonde play a surprise acoustic set in a bookstore in Los Feliz about 10 years ago. Johnette sang with no mic no more than 10 feet from me, if that. She was so, so powerful it just brought me to tears. I had been a fan since I was a teen in the 90’s and their music helped me through some really bad times. I told her that after the show, she hugged me and said “me too, baby”. It was amazing.
DZJW7: don't get me wrong, if I hear Joey on the radio I won't turn it off, but in my opinion, it's one of Johnette's weakest songs. She has admitted as much, but said it paid for her mon's house, which is cool!
"Like a memory in motion You were only passing through That's all you've ever known of life That's all you'll ever do There's a dream I have where I sail away Looking back I wave at you And I wave goodbye." When I heard the song the first time 30 years ago those word got stuck in my head forever, triggered instantly by all partings great and small over the years.
Great lyric from this song: 'in another life I see you, as an angel flying high, and the hands of time will free you, you will cast your chains aside. And the dawn will come and kiss away every tear that's ever fallen from your eyes.' Love it.
The train had left the station and you were trapped inside. Jesus Christ what amazing lyrics!! What a voice she has! So powerful.Such a beautiful song too...i love this.
I find it upsetting how underrated this band is. my dad raised me by playing the bloodletting cassette constantly. I was 3 and to this day this band remains to be my absolute favorite.
Johnette, I will cherish this performance of you swaying on stage forever. Pure visual and vocal masterpiece, in classic black and white. Got hooked in college in 1990 and loved your show in Madison, Wisconsin at the Barrymore theater in 1994.
I'd loved this song for years, and generally have no use for videos, but this one left my jaw hanging. Johnette, for me, has always perfectly embodied a wonderful duality that is so human: tough, yet vulnerable; beautiful soul surrounded by an ugly culture, etc. How could anyone not dig this band?
A lot of magic going on in this song, amazing tune. The shimmering guitar chords and triangle chimes perfectly linger over the rolling rhythm, the measured and well phrased solo section, then the pained vocals all through - equal parts sung, groaned and spoken. Sublime. A true modern tragic-country classic.
You're right about that. I'm not musically informed but the subtlety of the drums & bass along with the vocals & very well written lyrics make this song something beautiful to behold
For 15 years I thought my dad was dead. Everytime the part came on “In another life I see you, as an angel flying high…and the hands of time will free you. You will cast your chains aside”…it didn’t matter where I was, in the hot kitchen I worked in, anywhere…that part of the song would grip my heart and nearly destroy me. In 2002, he walked up to the apartment I was living in, with pure white hair. I almost didn’t recognize him, because his hair was charcoal black all those years before. 2002 was when a “literal ghost” (so it felt like to me) walked into my life from “the dead.” He just turned 79 last March (2024) and he got sober at 74. Although I live in Florida, now, I spent part of last Christmas (2023) with him and I cherish every moment we have, now…since we didn’t have that for so long.❤️
One of the best bands of the eighties that never got the recognition they deserved Johnette Napolitano is one of my favorite vocalists-ever.. She has a serious set of pipes, her vocals soar here but I' think her vocals truly shine with the weary, loneliness and yearning expressed on Mexican Moon.
I totally missed this band when they were in their prime. So glad I finally discovered them in 2024. Got a lot to catch up on. Just purchased Bloodletting CD...so good.
Concrete Blonde represented the highest evolution of 80s rock music with its searing guitars, nuanced writing, and powerful, sultry female vocals... they broke big in '90-'91 - just in time, right before the genre disappeared and Lisa Loeb & Jewel took over the airwaves for the rest of the decade.
I first heard Concrete Blonde in the 80's when I was a teenager. It was God is a Bullet. After that I heard Joey and I was hooked. Now I'm in my 50's and this is my absolute favorite band of all time. Their music touched me in a way that meant the world to me. I've seen them live every chance I could and I was this close to meeting Johnette once after I met her sound mixer, Felix. It would have been a dream come true but she was too tired after the show 😢. People have got to stop with the "music is dead now, poor youth etc etc" comments. I admit that mainstream pop is absolute crap (with a few exceptions, very few), but there is so much good music out there. The alternative music is still there, rock is not dead! Just because you don't hear it everywhere on the radio, doesn't mean it's gone. I love XX century music and especially the 80s/90s but I also love a lot of bands from my time. Let's enjoy music no matter what decade it is from.
Four years ago I came across this song in the worst time of my life. I played the crap out of this song back then and I never was sure why. Great song.
That haunting voice. The slinky dress with the strap hanging off the shoulder. The purple pumps. Rockin' that bass. Johnette was pure magic. Mankey's jangly guitar brilliance only made it even more so...
There's nowhere near enough love for this band, or for Johnette Napolitano. Not only is her voice distinctive and rich, but she's a terrific bass player as well. Where too many bassists might overplay, her riffs are nearly always exactly what the song needs -- and that's more important for a bass player than being able to play complex runs or a thousand notes per minute.
Never will understand why this band didn’t get more attention!!! Some of best riffs and vocals I’ve heard in my 50 years!!!
entièrement d' accord.
Had the same thought. It's almost angelicly hypnotizing.
I’m so glad this has 16,000 thumbs up. That’s great to see. These guys deserve the recognition.

Lyrics
Well, I hear you're driving someone else's car now
She said you came and took your stuff away
All the poetry and the trunk you kept your life in
I knew that it would come to that someday
Like a sad hallucination
When I opened up my eyes
The train had passed the station
And you were trapped inside
Yet I never wonder where you went
I only wonder why, I wonder why
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline
Oh, oh Caroline
Whoa, whoa, whoa Caroline
Like a memory in motion
You were only passing through
That is all you've ever known of life, that's all you'll ever do
There's a dream I have where I sail away
Looking back I wave at you, and I wave goodbye
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline
Oh Caroline
Oh (Caroline)
In another life I see you as an angel flying high
And the hands of time will free you
You will cast your chains aside
And the dawn will come and kiss away
Every tear that's ever fallen from your eyes
Behind those eyes I wonder
Oh Caroline oh oh oh
(Caroline, Caroline)
Oh Caroline
Sometimes I wonder (Caroline)
Oh Caroline
Sometimes I, sometimes I wonder (Caroline)
(Caroline) oh Caroline

Celeste Woodhead check out the album “free”. A lot of good stuff there. Very good stuff I know you will love!!!! I promise you.

Celeste Woodhead you’re welcome =)
I can't listen to concrete blonde anymore without tearing up lol. Memories, vibes, miss those days
a voice like no other , so natural , so pure , so one of a kind
This song sums up the 90s, people moved in and out of your life like that. And you wondered where they went. This might be the best song ever written.
John you clogged up toilets
Her voice is haunting in such a good way
People have got to stop with the "music is dead now, poor youth etc etc" comments.
Most underrated singer of all time, Johnette.
And song writer :)
Gosh I miss those days and "My MTV".
I was just 11 years of age in 1990.
All those rock bands were superb in their own way.
Johnette Napolitano rocks and is a natural beauty.
I agree
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Acho foda a voz da Napolitano
@ Her "voz:" rocks too. :)
One of the most recognized guitar work ever, only one band has ever sounded like this, ever !
Four years ago I came across this song in the worst time of my life. I played the crap out of this song back then and I never was sure why. Great song.
I hear you, brother.
That is funny because that is what I did
uma lenda do rock
same i don't know why either lol
It's because you were Caroline. Or you lost someone.
This song has perfect melancholy...
Omg that voice....😊
my god When music whas music and the singers and musicians too ...what years can i feel in my skin when i hear this band ...
i can feel
+Carlitos Lexman let me tell you that time stays in the mind, the skind and the soul.....
That haunting voice. The slinky dress with the strap hanging off the shoulder. The purple pumps. Rockin' that bass. Johnette was pure magic. Mankey's jangly guitar brilliance only made it even more so...
God this guitar solo is efffin' EPIC!!!!!
It's like James Mankey took every heartbreak I ever experienced and set it to music....
Can listen to this over and over
I usually do.
I visit this video every time I decide to check out concrete blonde on RUclips.
but two times and thats enough
there's such urgency to it yet such longing, truly beautiful
What a beautiful, haunting song and an equally spellbinding clip. A blast from the past for oldies such as myself. Thankyou for posting this gem.
Damn straight. Her melodic light and dark tones strike at my heart and soul mysteriously.
Concrete blonde is the best band ever! No exceptions.
one of the best written tunes ever
One of the all-time great rock albums. One great song after another.
this song still gives me goose bumps
Me too! Just now as I was listening to it and reading the comments I felt chills run throughout my entire body. It's such an incredible song.
Rena Whitehead Yes goose bumps from the begining until the end!
Amen
Damn she looks good with that classic appearance.
THIS BAND IS CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED
STOP IT!!!!!!!!!!!
My sisters awesome song may she rest in peace, I love and miss you and cancer sucks your loving brother ❤️❤️❤️❤️
