I just had to finally make a comment about this song after more than 30 years ago when this song came out. I lost my boyfriend in a car accident and his name was Joey. This song came out the same week he passed away. He never knew I was pregnant but now I am the mother of his almost 31 year old daughter. She is beautiful and she looks so much like him. This song has always been close to my heart and for my daughter who never got to meet her dad Joey. RIP my love Joey ❤️

    • @mknewlan67

All of us struggle with the bottle, some bottles have booze, some sex, some drugs. I got addicted to partying and beer stationed in Germany, for some strange stupid quirk of fate once I got stateside I quit. 30 years later I occasionally will drink half a beer. Once a week it’s a dram of scotch my preferred vice. Hang in there dixie I believe in you.

    • @murphyr31
      @murphyr31 Год назад

Fellow Drunk here, well now recovering drunk. I’ll have 16 years sober on December 23rd. Your comment made me just want to say something. I’m 52 now, when I got sober I was wanted in three counties in two different states for probation violations. I was habitual violator DUI. I was 50k behind on my child support, it wasn’t a totally accurate calculation but I was substantially behind. I obviously once again messed up my opportunity to have Christmas with my kids as the sobriety date suggests.
I was a morning drinker because my body was dependent on alcohol and getting drunk in the morning made it virtually impossible for me to have any sort of normal life.
I had little faith on 12-24-07 that I was going to be able to quit drinking this time but here I am nearly 16 years later and I still haven’t taken a drink. I had been to 13 plus detoxes and at least half that many rehab stints and none of those or my kids made me not drink. I finally got sick and tired of being sick and hopeless inside. I wanted a better life. If I told you I now have a life I could only have dreamed about you might question me. But I really do and all those problems with institutions and people I told you about are not a part of my life anymore. All because I put the bottle down. You can do it! Message me if I can help in anyway!
I love you and I’m praying for you tonight.
      Rich Murphy ( rmurphy37@gmail)
PS. In 09 I met my now wife and we have a daughter who will be 9 on Christmas Eve. So that 23rd sobriety date is significant for us in more ways than one.

I played this song at my girlfriends funeral. She died of a drug overdose; and I remember when it was my turn to go and speak I was just trying so hard not to cry; I had horrible stage fright and my voice kept wavering but I got up there. I began by telling everyone that despite her mistake, I refuse to let it define my opinion of her. She was a wonderful, caring and giving person who had been struggling with horrible anxiety and depression for 7 years of her life. I went on to tell everyone there a few stories about our time together; like the time she sold her drum set to pay for an operation for my dog, just as I was getting ready to put him down. Like the time she spent her savings so we could go visit my grandmother when she was dying of cancer... I protested against it, but she had told me there will always be more money, but if I don't go see my grandmother one last time I will regret it the rest of my life. If only I had known how little time I had left with her... anyways, then I talked about how this song is about a woman who is deeply in love with a man, and has to live with his addiction despite being constantly hurt by it. I said I blame the drug, never my girlfriend; that I loved her just as much as the day I met her, even if her habit tore me to pieces... though what I suffered is nothing compared to what she went through. I ended off by saying that when I got the news I was angry, sad and terrified beyond anything I had ever felt in my life.. but I'm not angry anymore, just heartbroken. I love you Maya, and always will. I will never meet a girl as beautiful both and the inside and outside ever again. I will remember you until the day I die... I will be 90 and forget how to use the toilet and brush my teeth before I forget you babe :'(

Thanks for sharing this with us... it takes a lot to make me cry, but you had me completely choked by the end of it.
As someone who has struggled on and off with multiple drug addictions over the years and who is married to an alcoholic who is struggling to get control over his life, I understand that addiction does not make a person bad... it's just a very difficult challenge that some people have to fight. Indeed, I think that some people are more beautiful and compassionate because of the hardship they have faced through their struggles with addiction.
I'm very sorry for your loss... she sounds like a truly amazing person.

That rough, raw, throaty contralto. Sends shivers down the spine. That weary, lovelorn, nearly-defeated lyric. Almost makes me cry. The tremolo-inflected guitar solo. A burst of uplifting melody and power. The drums and bass: a throbbing, gut-churning call to arms. All in all, a blistering song, and so painfully underrated, it's not fair.

I'll go on...I used to be Joey. I almost lost everything to drinking. My now wife, Julie, put up with so much of my shit but she always picked me up, dusted me off and forgave me. She would cry herself to sleep and tell me to please bring back the great man she had met. One morning, I woke up with half of my body in the front door of our home and my wife, son and toddler daughter staring down at me with a disappointment in their eyes that I had never scene. Crying and in a whisper, my wife said, "what do you think of these memories you are giving your kids?" It hit me, it hit me hard!!! I sobered up & cleaned up that day. It's been 9 years. I thank her & my kids for saving my life.

No voice...has been better projected from a human mouth. Perfect in it's inflection, powerful in its delivery. Breathes the proper life into each lyric. THIS...is the voice, of a woman. Now a days..you hear little girls...even in the adult singers. This is how it's suppose to be.

My mother always loved this song. She loved all music. This was one of the many random songs from any and all decades so would play as I grew up.
One year after she unexpectedly passed, listening to all these ‘favourites’ of hers that she would play while I was growing up .. now have meanings. Like she couldn’t tell me this life lesson at that time, because I was young. But music ( these strong familiar songs) made such a huge impression on me. And now, I understand all these stories and lessons, she wanted to teach me. You don’t need to understand the lessons, because they were for me. A year now later after she passed, I think. Was this on purpose? Was she implanting thoughts in me that I wasn’t supposed to understand till I was older?? Maybe she just loved the songs, now I feel them too. Maybe it is all magic.

This is a very beautiful and poetic song, and Johnette’s voice is one of the most haunting and underrated voices of rock and roll to ever come out.
According to Johnette herself, she actually struggled with writing the lyrics and put off writing it until the last minute because the subject matter (a young woman falling in and out of love with an alcoholic young man) was actually inspired by her relationship with the late great Marc Moreland of Wall of Voodoo fame (who if I am not mistaken struggled with alcoholism), so it made it all the more personal to her, saying, "I knew what I wanted to say, but I wasn't looking forward to saying it. So it was the last vocal that I recorded. And I remember Chris every day, "Do we have vocals to 'Joey' yet? Do we have words to 'Joey' yet?" And I'm like, "Not yet." So I literally wrote them in a cab. I knew what I was going to say, it's just a matter of like a cloud's forming and then it rains. The lines are forming in my head and they're all in my head, and I know the chorus, and I know what I'm going to say. It's just a matter of fine tuning the details and how I'm going to lug it out. And then it rains. The clouds all formed and it rained. And then it happened. And that was it. And it was just there." It was the last song of the record (Bloodletting) because of this.
RIP Marc Moreland (1958-2002). May you forever live on in your music and the memory of this song.

I've been battling depression for more than 20 years and I've had people in my life try to break through to me and help. I really began drinking too much during the last couple of years of my marriage and I blame myself for the end of it. These past 10 years or so I've come to grips with my illness and have actually allowed people in and try to help. So my message to all that are going through any kind of troubled times be it addictions or illness, please allow people into your life and be there for you.
