Hey Alex! I rarely comment but I've been watching all your videos for a while. They're truly amazing and help me make decisions, but I've been waiting for the perfect moment to ask you this, and I feel like this is that moment. You talked about judging a book by its cover, which is absolutely what we do in this hobby of consumption! So I'd love to see your top 10 list of best looking kickstarter pages of all time! (Design and structure-wise). Thanks for considering!
Gonna be playing our fourth session of Tainted Grail tonight! The combat/Diplomacy game play is... Decent. Not riveting but it fills its function. Running around on the map? Thats alot more interesting and exploring each location and reading the thick tome of things to do with choices and consequences? Now THAT I love. Im playing with another person and we are both roleplayers. So we enjoy reading and exploring dangerous areas.
@@BoardGameCo the worst things Ive heard about The game is the grind. Notngrinding exp, but getting resources to Light the menhirs. And that takes time.and with time the menhirs expire! So its a bit of resource and time management. But after playing.... 15 or 20 hours perhaps, maybe like 30 or 45 minutes have been to gather extra resources. And/or you can use The "story mode" rule that menhirs stay lit 1 round extra. We havent used that one. We might if we start to feel it becomes a chore.
I love your videos. Just a fun fact that might sound interesting to you (although I might be wrong so I guess it is not a fact then). If you sort board games on KS by most funded, it looks a bit different than beginning of your list. For instance, KS sorts them 10-Etherfields, 9-Zombicide, 8-Dark Souls. I believe this is because KS uses USD as comparison currency, but it converts it with rate that was active when KS ended. In that example, Dark Souls actually made 5.5 mil usd since then USD/GBP rate was ~1.46, and today is ~1.33 :)
Got my second wave content for TG this week, glad that I've went with split shipping, now I can delve into two more campaigns :D definitely #1 game for me
Bandung looks so good! I'm excited for it! I was really hesitant to like it because of the dark souls board game reviews. Additionally I was back and forth on bardsung because its a campaign game and I've got several coming in still. Overall watching your playthrough with the creators convinced me to get it because it is different enough from others to stand on its own.
I guessed although I didn't order them into a list: Etherfields, Tainted Grail, Nemesis: Lockdown, 7th Continent: What Goes Up, Kingdom Death Monster, and Frosthaven. Misses were Zombicide: Invaders, Gloomhaven, Massive Darkness 2, and Rising Sun.
When you spoke of gloomhaven being dethroned, my first thought was - what kind of amazing game will replace it? And now I'm wierdly excited about an imagined game.
Almost makes me regret not backing Frosthaven myself ^^ But you are right: so many huge games mean less time for each of them (not to mention having to store them...)
Sure frosthaven did well to overthrow kdm from the kickstarter list, however I read somewhere that kdm did additional 6 millions with the late pledge 'campaign'. considering it is still being delivered, barely touching the new stuff and constantly reopening the pledge manager every black friday, that only campaign is still making tons of dollars, so much that the creator has to put a disclaimer to pledge responsible every time they open it again
@BoardGameCo Id be really interested to see a video of the top 10 (or not too 10) IP Games. Since we’re in the midst of The Witcher KS atm and Bloodborne recently, many seem to not fulfill expectations. So I’m interested in your opinion on this.
I backed 1st edition Gloomhaven and know 1st edition hit and stayed at the number 1 game of all time on board game geek. So I checked the Kickstarter stats- less than 5k backers and less than $400k. Yes, I know 2nd edition sold a lot more but all because of that original less than 5k early adoptors
"Don't judge a book by its cover is one of the stupidiest thing I have ever heard anyone say" and all the follow up explanation is just golden, I'm surely going to use it in my life!
I’ve only fell to the hype 4 time plus one in retail out of the top 10. So I feel good. I got tainted grail ( haven’t played yet ), nemesis lockdown ( never played nemesis), Frosthaven ( have gloomhaven, got frosthaven for my adult daughter) 7th continent ( hated the game and sold it) , and exploding kittens (kids loved it) in retail.
i consider myself a soulsborne VG fanboy, Yet i always believed that the genre isn't geared towards everybody since it is time-consuming(and for the other party stressconsuming) to figure out every enemy and boss his movement&attack patterns, but for that very reason i find it so rewarding to have a really a tough section that you made it through with skill & patience. Albeit i also have to admit that i didn't back the boardgame adaptation of Dark Souls since in general i don't back games with a ton of mini's that might get damaged through frequent transport.(the high end price doesn't help either LOL!)
Welp, this finally triggered my Frosthaven FOMO - upgraded my $1 pledge. Not as good a deal as the Gloomhaven KS (which was truly ridiculous at $100 incl. shipping), but that game overdelivers for its price point. Also, metal coins. Sold.
You're asking a question, telling us to reply in the comments how many out of 10 have we've guessed, when you spoil 2 titles already in the intro/thumbnail image :P I couldn't give 8 answers, but I've guessed 7th continent, Nemesis + Etherfields (I'm from Poland, how can I not vote for Awakens ;) ). So 3 out of 8. I'd vote for Tainted Grail and knew something from the Gloomhavenish universe should make it to the list as well. Speaking of, I can't wait for your Etherfields review and Ether vs ISS video.
Honestly, the theme of kdm put me off too, but having gone through a campaign now on TTS, it's an incredible experience. The pinup stuff is pretty icky, imo, but it's kept entirely seperate from the main content so we've entirely ignored it. Definitely worth a play, and I'm thinking very hard about jumping on the 2.0 release.
@@BoardGameCo oh fully. 25 sessions or more is a big commitment. It's why I backed out of Frosthaven at the last minute. I'm currently debating whether to save Etherfields for when people are a thing again or just dive in and have it all to myself.
Good video; I totally agree with your thoughts on the unhealthy nature of the fanatical loyalty fans have over certain companies--when they attack reviewers for having a negative opinion. It's toxic.
Yep, it's funny because you get attacked in both directions...too positive and your a company shill...too negative and you're just going for clickbait and views....it's almost like the only valid opinions are the ones we have ourselves :)
@@BoardGameCo Yeah, unless you are SU&SD, you are not allowed to go against the norm. And personally, Awaken Realms fans are the worst. The games look great but I have yet to play one that doesn't require a homebrew adjustment. And enough of the people posting 10-star reviews for games that haven't been released. Play the game!
this would have been a bit more interesting! gloomhaven was isaac's number 2. I think you'd probably see a lot of the euro big mini games because lots of mythic and LMS games are first time creators.
Your closing point about too many good games sort of alludes to the "board game bubble" that I think was a point of discussion a couple years ago and it was about to burst, if hadn't already. But based on those 2019-2020 KS #'s, I guess the industry is doing just fine. ...at least on KS. ...for some games. I'm curious how a smaller, straight to retail publisher is holding up (trying to think of any that exist. Daily Magic? Plan B? Are they "small"?). Granted, I know 2020 is sort of an asterisk year, but yeah, the industry climate is one I'm interested in.
I would have never guessed a card game "Exploding Kittens" was so well funded. I agree with the paying a slight premium to back games on kickstarter for early delivery ( most of the time ) or something exclusive not in the retail versions. I will always put my fingers on the scale to back a game if I don't think it will hit retail or be readily available after the campaign fulfillment. I missed too many great games that are so expensive now that they aren't really available without now paying that premium + price. What's the saying, "Pay me now or pay me later." 😁
Here's an idea: best kickstarters from brand new creators. Truly extraordinary games that came from new creators who hadn't had previous games. I like to back projects like that sometimes, even though they're relatively higher risk.. and sometimes I do win big. ;)
0:50 ; my gues for top ten funded Boardgames, which i suspect on KS, not including the ones i know (like Etherfields, Tainted Grail or Gloomhaven/Frosthaven): -Blood Rage -7th Continent -Zombicide -Wingspan -Terraforming Mars after i see the vid, i will recap this 👍 my recap: -one from Zombicide was in ;) -7th Continent was right Wingspan and Terraforming Mars wasn't original on KS I was suprised, that Gloomhaven itself not was in the top ten.
OK, this is not really on topic but want to ask and not sure where/when will be the right spot. I'll relate it to the topic by saying ISS Vanguard has a high probability (guaranteed?) to be on this list once campaign is over (not KS but still crowdfunded). My question is whether you've had any exposure to Unsettled from Orange Nebula and if so, what are your thoughts in comparison to ISS Vanguard? My impression is that Unsettled is the Eurogame version of space exploration and that ISS Vanguard is the Ameritrash (not used as a negative) version of space exploration. Also, Unsettled does not have the campaign aspect of ISS but seems to have lots of variability to replay individual scenarios (planets). Does that match up with your experience? I think I wish ISS was more like Unsettled planet exploration mechanics or that Unsettled included an overarching campaign story similar to the ISS ship phase. So a combination of the two feels like it would really hit the sweet spot for what would make an epic space narrative game! Still debating on whether to get Unsettled or back ISS Vanguard. Opinions? Enough audience interest to justify a "Play This Not That" on the two?
Funny, when I came to Place 3, I realized that I have not backed one game on this list. Got out of TG and happy about it. Nemesis the same. Etherfields never even had a second thought about it. 7th continent, wanted the german version :-) I am soooo not mainstream *cough*
Question: In your own opinion, how many years it'll take before a KS boardgame gets more backers than exploding kittens? 3 years? 5 years? And do you believe it'll be a big box/minis game like most of the games on this list or another "silly one hit small boardgame" like exploding kittens?
Having so many fans who are willing to spend $250 or more dollars on Kingdom Death: Monster is a feat worth remembering but...If you were to adjust this list to account for number of backers, KDH would rank way far down. It costs 2.5x as much as Frosthaven which means Frosthaven has 2.5x as many fans. Of course KDH might rank highly on a list that's impossible to accurately assemble: How many potential fans a board game has who simply can't afford to buy in. I'm sure at $100 Frosthaven has many fans who can't play, but KDH may possibly have significantly more. BTW - $250 for KDH was the kickstarter price. The difference is even more stark if you consider to buy it now is $350 to $400 whereas Frosthaven will likely be available for $120 or so once it's printed.
I backed Dark Souls the Board Game and I can say as a standalone Board Game it didn't meet expectations but using the miniatures in my Table Top RPGs was worth it in the end. My players are always afraid of chests turning into Mimics and there is an added psychological fear from their experiences playing dark souls and it looking the same.
I thought that something from Tee Turtle (Unstable Unicorns) had made this list, but then I did not listen carfully and did not make a list, however, I did know many of the ones that were on the list :-)
I backed Rurik, not on the premise of it being better than vindication, but because I think my wife will like it better lol. I will probably late pledge vindication though 😉
Late back Rurik and put 1$ into Vindication, you can upgrade later. :) I can't really compare them since I've only played Vindication (and love it) but I also backed Rurik, it certainly looks very nice.
Geez, I'm so wary of the whole kickstarter phenomenon that I have yet to jump into the pool. That said, I ordered the 7th Continent core set directly from the creator's website for a reasonable amount and should get it next week. I am strongly considering joining the KS for Kemet as it looks amazing and it's a proven game. I simply can't justify spending so much on something that looks great but isn't any fun. Edit: Guess I'll have to wait until June for a late pledge on Kemet.
I expected a couple more CMON games in the top 10. I've wondered how they can come back multiple times per year and still seem to get $2-$5 million each time from probably the same set of people. How long will it take ISS Vanguard to reach $5 million? I don't think they'll make it on the first day, but I'm sure they'll make it before the end of the campaign.
Yep, I was surprised as well. I believe they are the highest grossing company, although their individual offerings are a bit lower compared to the top 10.
I'm surprised what CMONs top funded is. Not sure I would've ever guessed that one, or that they would only have one on the list. Seems making a board game of a popular video game is a great way to get huge funding, even if the game isn't good. No surprise Awaken Realms is making money. Surprised 7th Citadel didn't pass 7th Continent. KDM fans are insane. See Jesse. Totally didn't even think about Exploding Kittens.
I had no idea Exploding Kittens was going to be #3! Wow. Hey, you should pick it up and play with your kids. It is definitely fun and *alllllllllll* about 'take that'. In a fun way, of course! :-)
That Thogg Double hero from zombicide green horde is terrible. Unless I'm misunderstanding their abilities and interactions, it's just better to use two separate heroes unless you're trying to intentionally restrict yourself for an increased challenge.
My main lesson from this is that a sci-fi/fantasy theme SELLS, on KS at least. I suspect that has something to do with the overlap between genre nerds and ultra-online people who are very aware of KS as a platform.
I will make a prediction that whenever Kingdom Death: Monster 2.0 is released, it will be #1 on this list. Of course... KDM 1.5 still hasn’t been fully delivered yet. So that will be a while.
@@BoardGameCo 143 as of 12/14/20 www.kickstarter.com/discover/advanced?category_id=34&pledged=4&sort=most_funded&seed=2679994&page=1 Not all of these are games and some are series (i.e., zombicide & KDM)
Kingdom death is my fave table top game of all time, and i have ben table topping sence the late 80's. that said and to Riff off of some of you're comment's. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT for everyone. I will skip no opportunity to sing its praises, but I would never claime that everyone should try it. If you have looked at that proverbial books cover and you have judged it to not be for you. trust, that and move on. Thairs gloom haven, townsfolk tussle, dark soals ect. One is either going to love KDM to the point of obsession..and financialy ruin, or one is going to equally powerfully hate it. If not be outright offended by it. Do you're do diligence, research it, look at images from the game, if the exsite you're imagination, and intellect, then save you're pennys and get it by what ever means necessary, if the the images and themes, twist you're stomach, and offend you're sensibility, go else ware immediately, because this game will double, and triple down, on what ever themes are upsetting you. This is a game that dose NOT care about you're feelings as a player. it's kinda the point.can you and you're friends build a settlement in the most hellish environment conceivable..and we aint talking about cutesy devil horns, pitchforks, and fire hell hear. We hear at the start of 2021 are spoiled for choice, there are so many wonderful games..many more then opportunities to play them. On a final note I have heard many critics of KDM claim it is sexist. it is not. It is highly sexulised, but it is not sexist. All genders are given the exact same treatment. my KDM play group consist of 2 women, a transgender woman, and one Male, we play once a week, and each session leaves us all hungry for more.
Invader is still better than green horde. And KDM made one girl at my game table cry. If that's not an endorsement IDK what is. But I will say the cost, organization and hype around KDM is ridiculous.
@@BoardGameCo true. But I've rarely seen a game drive a person to tears after a character died. Funny, when I came to Place 3, I realized that I have not backed one game on this list. Got out of TG and happy about it. Nemesis the same. Etherfields never even had a second thought about it. 7th continent, wanted the german version :-) I am soooo not mainstream *cough*
Lol nothing wrong with being different :)
Keen for your review for nemesis. I found it extraordinarily overhyped.
Likely won't be getting that to the table for awhile.
Question: In your own opinion, how many years it'll take before a KS boardgame gets more backers than exploding kittens? 3 years? 5 years? And do you believe it'll be a big box/minis game like most of the games on this list or another "silly one hit small boardgame" like exploding kittens?
Well the boardgame market seems to be growing at 10-15% a year....so could be 20+ years unless something accelerates.
100% agreed right there.
I did get Etherfields!
Nice :)
I thought that something from Tee Turtle (Unstable Unicorns) had made this list, but then I did not listen carfully and did not make a list, however, I did know many of the ones that were on the list :-)
I like ZB BP, but i like more GH. Great heroes, great necromancers and bosses.
That gives me hope :)
I guessed 5, Tainted Grail, Frosthaven, Nemesis, Kingdom Death, Zombicide. Forgot about 7th Continent :D
Nice :) I wish I had played that game myself...but didn't think of it until after I already knew the games :)
Speaking of Kickstarter, I can late back Rurik or back Vindication. I know the games are not alike, but if you had to lean towards one, which one?
Oh man....for me I'd pick Vindication, but that's a really close pick. They're 5 away from each other in my rankings.
@@BoardGameCo Thanks. I just have to start being more selective. As you know not enough time in the day and too many games.
I backed Rurik, not on the premise of it being better than vindication, but because I think my wife will like it better lol. I will probably late pledge vindication though 😉
Late back Rurik and put 1$ into Vindication, you can upgrade later. :)
I can't really compare them since I've only played Vindication (and love it) but I also backed Rurik, it certainly looks very nice.
Kemet is sooo good :)
Never been interested in simpler card games that involve going back and forth :)
@@BoardGameCo I didn't think so either (for myself)! I mean, I still don't own it, but I would be willing to play it.
That Thogg Double hero from zombicide green horde is terrible. Unless I'm misunderstanding their abilities and interactions, it's just better to use two separate heroes unless you're trying to intentionally restrict yourself for an increased challenge.
I used it while ago, can't remember but felt it was cool. One of the benefits is it saves you wasted movement actions since one can move for both.
Oh man I only got like 4 right^^ Haven't thought about 7th continent and KDM at all. Jesse would be ashamed :-D
Nice :) And true on KDM
My main lesson from this is that a sci-fi/fantasy theme SELLS, on KS at least. I suspect that has something to do with the overlap between genre nerds and ultra-online people who are very aware of KS as a platform.
Yes, sci fi and fantasy work well. When people try to break the mold, they often don't do as well.
I will make a prediction that whenever Kingdom Death: Monster 2.0 is released, it will be #1 on this list. Of course... KDM 1.5 still hasn’t been fully delivered yet. So that will be a while.
I think the gap between 1.5 and 2....might make people a drop gunshy.
1.6 exists. XD
Can you do a video for every game that has broken $1M?
I wonder how many games that is.
@@BoardGameCo 143 as of 12/14/20 www.kickstarter.com/discover/advanced?category_id=34&pledged=4&sort=most_funded&seed=2679994&page=1
Not all of these are games and some are series (i.e., zombicide & KDM)
Etherfields rulebook has greatly discouraged me from enjoying the game, so much so, that I might even pass on ISS Vanguard.
Etherfields aside, they do have Paul Grogan on board for ISS.
@@BoardGameCo I get it. If it's a bad fit, you just sell it.
I'm very upset about anything negative you said about any of the games I like.
I'm very upset that you're upset.
2 out of 10. Not bad
Nice :)
Anyone else just going straight to the time stamps to break the tension? Lol
Lol :) That ruins the fun!
wait so everyone doesn't know this like the top 10 grossing movies of all time? do... I have a problem?
Lol definitely not everyone :) You and I (and others) are on the extreme of our KS awareness.
Invader is still better than green horde.
And KDM made one girl at my game table cry. If that's not an endorsement IDK what is. But I will say the cost, organization and hype around KDM is ridiculous.
lol, you and I have to have a conversation about endorsement :)
@@BoardGameCo true. But I've rarely seen a game drive a person to tears after a character died. I don't follow Mr.Quack a lot, and I don't know how he's been advertising the game to you, but I can talk for hours about good and bad stuff about the game. I've barely seen anything close, and I actually played a lot of KS campaign games, even tainted grail, unlike some casual gamers who only play exploding kittens. (That's a joke, grail is a bad game anyway)
Are these numbers inflation adjusted? Sure 1-5 years isn’t much but still...
No, didn't bother doing that due to the time frame.
Etherfields not receiving very good reviews now that it's in the hands of the people. Lots of "padding" as they say.
My review goes up Wednesday :)
@@BoardGameCo *Burnsian finger-waggle*
Never understood the love Nemesis received. Was meh.
I hear you ...and yet it does indeed receive a lot of 💕
I have lost faith in you at 4:09. ncncnc
:)
Damn, calling no joy here because I already know all ten games lol. It is funny seeing some of these top grossing games again despite them being terrible IMO.
Lol you're one of the few. Most people won't already know all 10.
@@BoardGameCo Yeah, I’m a KS junkie. 🤣
Don’t play Kingdom Death Monster.......it will be your financial ruin.
I'll try it...but I can't imagine I'll be getting more than that.
Everyone backed Darkest Dungeon for miniatures, LOL. Because gameplay looks totally boring.
To you and me yes, but I have to imagine to others no.
Only got 4 right 1,10, and 2 Awaken Realms games. Forgot about #2, 3, 8, & 9. Never followed the other 2.
Nice :)
