    i broke my neck when I was 15. Dislocated C1, 2, 3. At my age of 74 I experience severe vertigo when I get up from my dentists chair having had my teeth cleaned. I can sit but not stand up for up to an hour. My Neurologist eliminated the possibility of blood flow obstruction. No one else tried to help me. I diagnosed myself and cleared BPPV in my right ear which remedied my daily dizziness. I had MS earlier in my life which has been in remission for 20 years. I have about 50-60 brain lesions. I can move around with a cane. I believe my vertigo is caused by weakness in the right of my neck as the right side of my body suffered the worst of my MS attacks. I was able to simulate the Dentist chair vertigo attack by throwing my head back and looking at the ceiling. I started your exercises and am seeing improvement. I think it will take some time. I have hope now where there was none. Thank Yoy

    Thank you! I'm so glad I found this. It has really really really helped with my dizziness. My dizziness comes at night and is related to anxiety and body imbalance. This has helped me immensely. Last week I couldn't even hold to 10 seconds. Every day 3 or 4 rounds and today I managed 40 seconds. Dizziness has also really reduced but I have been diagnosed with anxiety and mild sensory processing disorder for many years. When I am anxious I always get dizzy during FFF response. This has however helped immensely!!!

      my situation isn't vertigo. its not triggered by motion. it doesn't go away. its constant dizziness that fluctuates only in severity. the only time i don't feel dizzy is when i'm asleep. it intensifies with alcohol. one drink will make me nauseous and vomit for hours. so, i haven't had a drink in 12 years. i've had this condition since march of 2009. i've been to several doctors and emergency rooms and none of them give a damn. i've had several brain-scan MRIs scheduled but ALL OF THEM fell through for reasons i can't control. one of those reasons is my dizziness prevents me from lying still long enough for the MRI. another reason - i don't have a ride home. the medical industry comes up with excuse after excuse not to treat me.
      I'M DESPERATE FOR HELP! i know i can't be the first person in medical history with these symptoms. but no doctor cares enough to even do any research! i've been suffering with this HORROR for every second of every day for 12 YEARS! i wish the hell someone would HELP ME!

    Found your channel today which seemed like divine intervention 😇 Since cervicogenic dizziness is a diagnosis of exclusion, current research has shown that patients have seen an average of 4.5 healthcare providers before getting a diagnosis. In fact most family practitioners will treat the secondary symptoms, such as migraines - with limited success. It is the greatest challenge I’ve ever faced, and the most terrifying and debilitating condition. I love that your channel is all about education - most people don’t know where to go for help and its unendingly frustrating getting bounced all over the place, even for someone with extensive knowledge of anatomy and healthcare experience. Really looking forward to meeting you at your practice and doing these exercises in the meantime.

    Found you today and im so glad I did, you are very insightful and i never knew dizziness could be neck related. Im young (26) and feeling like this is making me very depressed and anxious. I used to gym HARD when I was 22, not sure if i hurt my neck back then there was never a defining moment but for the past 3 years ive experienced increasing pain inducing, exhausting and now dizzying spells. I would lift stupid heavy and got addicted to it but now i can barely exercise without risk of migraine attack or my body overheating and giving in. Im experiencing so much discomfort. Freqent migraines, nerve issues, stiff neck, painful grinding neck, disrupted sleep etc. and recently random bouts of being dizzy.
    Ive had 1 CT and 1 MRI scan. I did see a chiro at first but didnt think it helped me and potentially think he made it worse at the time. Though the funny thing is I only found any kind of relief through popping, clicking and adjusting my neck which most of the time isn't intentional. Now that doesn't seem to help anymore though. This all got even worse when i cracked my neck, heard two loud pops that felt 'funny' and ever since ive had weird temple tension, sporadic headaches, migraines for days and dizziness. Scans have come back clean though but I feel like something is beinf missed. Im on the waiting list for a neruo atm but im at a loss because the wait list is up to a year., i feel stuck in my own body right now, unable to do things i love even as simple as playing board games. I want to be my fit healthy self again so desperately.

I felt like all my symptoms didn't make sense, dizziness, neck pain and nausea, I am a dental hygienist, so for 29 years I have been working with less than optimal posture and I'm sure there are some vertebral issues along with weakened neck musculature. Few weeks back I had a muscle pull, that I strained further with poor posture, specially while asleep. This video gave me a lot of relief after googling and getting severe anxiety. Thank you so much for this! Hope it goes away soon 🙏

    Helpful, will try the stretches when *not* dizzy, thanks. I never understood how ANYONE with severe dizziness could ever do any part of the Epley. When I’m dizzy, even a 1” of movement of my head will make the world fly around so bad I could pass out. If you CAN put your head in those positions...you’re not experiencing true dizziness or you’d roll off what you’re on (or pass out). I think many people equate ‘lightheadedness’ with being dizzy, which are two totally different experiences.

    • @drjonsaunders
      @drjonsaunders  3 года назад +2

      I agree..it is not easy for someone with severe BPPV to do the Epley by themselves...definitely best to have someone do it with them...any exercises/stretches/treatments aimed at helping with dizziness, vertigo, or cervicogenic dizziness one should expect to feel mild to moderate exacerbation...but you are correct, sometimes you have to pick your moments to perform when feeling "ok". Best wishes.

PT who specializes in neurological disorders also said the same thing. I’m so happy to see more attention and information on this bc Physcians look at you like you’re crazy. Ex-Sufferer here, i did get cured so here's some advice for you guys :
    -Get yourself a good osteopath, they are very familiar with it and have a whole body approach. As sometime even a tight psoas can end up doing some cervical damage.
    -Yoga ( yes yoga ) twice a day everyday, just do it whole body
    -Walk a lot, everyday go for either a big walk or several and while you do so look straight ahead, no PHONE.
    -Throw you phone away, just don't look at it anymore.
    -Take a break every 30-45 min from the computer, move, strech whatever
    -Physical activity ( swim, run, i don't care, just move your body ) 2-3 times a week
    -Calm down, anxiety just makes it worst
    -Heat is your best friend, get an electric heat pad and use it on you trapezius / neck
    Once you actually find you routine progress is VERY fast, your body wants it as much as you
    No kidding within a month you'll feel better and within 3 its like nothing ever happened. Just remember muscle memory works both way so don't fuck up in the future.

    Thank you, this is very helpful information. I have BPPV & vestibular migraine. My neck is regularly tight but no one ever confirmed that the messages sent from my neck could also contribute to vertigo. Recently, I had an ear infection and vestibular migraine and I had trouble walking. I am only 57, and as a former athlete this was very scary and frustrating! I became anxious & depressed. I stopped driving for a time. Then, I had tinnitus. Not fun! I did some exercises at home such as the eply maneuver. Mostly, it took time and rest; it has been 5 months and I can now drive, walk, and do my daily activities. Wow, this was really difficult. It certainly helps to get more accurate information about cervcogenic dizziness. My health care providers did not explain that. Thanks again.

    I went to the hospital in 2017 because of this kind of vertigo (I've also had BBPV off and on throughout the years. feels quite different) and had a CT scan and an MRI (delightful experience, that one. Insist on earplugs). I was 51 so I think they wanted to make sure it wasn't a stroke. (I've been quite unhealthy most of my adult life so that may be a possibility). They found nothing. This is what I'm sure I have. I'm hoping the exercises will help over time. I blame poor pillows, and sitting at the PC a lot lately. I don't move when I sleep so...
    I woke up with this delightful problem this morning. Quite unsteady and I can't look down or bend over. Quite nauseous. My neck has made "grinding" sounds for years. So thanks for these videos. This vertigo puts a "kink" in my lifestyle. -_-

I’ve read about vestibular causes, Hashimoto’s (which I have) and low ferritin but this makes more sense to me. My neck is always sore and stiff. I’m thinking it’s posture related and it never occurred to me my dizziness could be coming from my neck. I’m going to do the exercises and hope it helps. Thanks for this video Dr John Saunders.I used to do few neck exercises but very irregular. Now, I will try to follow your instructions. I am 72, from India.Cervical spondylosis or spondylitis for 36 years. I used to have vertigo once in a while during the past 20 years or so. Tablet Vertin16 mg ( beta histamine) used to help. The vertigo/ dizziness has aggravated during the past 4 months. It's severe when I try to lie down on the bed and also when I bend my head forward or backwards. I can lie down only when my head is raised by atleast 15 inches. This is a very uncomfortable position, especially due to my lower back pain and osteoarthritis of both the knees. I can somehow sleep on left side and on the back with head slightly tilted towards left. Can't sleep on right side. I also suffer from mild imbalance while walking. I tried ENT surgeon's treatment, but no improvement. Now, taking Vertin16, twice a day. The problem is less during the daytime, but continues to bother whenever I lie down on the bed. Please advise.

    “Cervicogenic dizziness remains controversial. The lack of a diagnostic test or generally accepted criteria makes the entity even more problematic. Both anatomic-physiologic considerations and epidemiologic data suggest a relationship of neck pain and dizziness. Furthermore, there is emerging evidence that therapeutic interventions for cervical complaints may have an effect on dizziness and even on balance tests. At present, however, the diagnosis of cervicogenic or cervical dizziness is based on taking a history and trying to exclude other causes carefully. The best evidence for the diagnosis, and perhaps a starting point for further studies, may be patients who recover from both dizziness and neck pain after treatment of their cervical problems.”

      @drjonsaunders  3 года назад +2

      Definitely a diagnosis by elimination...it should be considered in those who have exhausted testing in both their vestibular and visual systems, as well after having ruled out more sinister causes via MRI or advanced testing...I can tell you it is a wonderful feeling seeing patients dizziness and balance improve after improving their mechanical neck problems...thanks for your comment.

    I have this, I also have severe muscular tmjd and neckpain on my right side. It's mostly extreme tightness. But the room isn't spinning. It's giving me dizzyness though. Headaches feel like sinus headaches, yet there's no infection. But what bothers me the most is the horrible fatigue I feel. It's not a bodily fatigue but a head and facial fatigue where my eyes get so heavy I need to close them. Even though I'm not tired. Blinking my right eye hurts. I've seen an optometrist, eyes are great. I get facial nerve pain and numbness, seen an neurologist, had an mri. Nothing is wrong. It's daily suffering and I can't work anymore. It stinks. I hope this video will help me. Ppl under estimate how debilitating this is.

    This really helped me, thanks. I had a nasty sickness over the 2022 holidays (think I had covid, but never tested) and basically only stayed in bed for three days. I had horrible vertigo as a result. After the first week, I found this video. It took another week to fix, and several weeks more to completely go away. But even the first time I did these exercises, I felt better.

    Great video! I've tried the epley maneuver many times with no success or makes it worse! For me the epley maneuver is worthless and alot of other people that I have talked to have had no luck also! A very costly treatment with zero results! Good luck with that proceedure!

    I know I have BPPV and possibly meiniers. I am tired of being off balance and having vertigo.

      Unfortunately, yes you can...research is lacking in this area but clinically I see patients with overlap all the time...figuring out which is predominant can sometimes be a challenge. Best wishes!

      Thank you for at least clarifying that. I try to do what I can to overcome all of this. I was doing great right before covid shit everything down. My dr had done the one treatment for it and worked good then I had a flare about three months later and it has been up and done since then. I also have dysfunctional eustation tubes so I am always clogged up. No air flow through, which makes it worse. Thank you for you video. I will try all of these. God bless

    What about dizziness that comes from stress or anxiety doctor?

    • @drjonsaunders
      @drjonsaunders  3 года назад +3

      Yes that is a good question, maybe a good future video topic...one thing you could try is when an anxiety attack happens, get calm and make sure you breathe through your tummy slowly, meaning your chest shouldn't move with your breaths, only your belly...best wishes.

    Very informative, thank you. Owing to an injury about four years ago, I do versions of these exercises. But I have a specific dizziness. It happens if I squat down - say to tie a shoelace, or sweep up something with a dustpan and handbrush. If I squat with my feet on the floor, my knees bent and my bottom roughly level with my ankles for more than five secs or so, then when I stand I get a surge of dizziness. This doesn't happen if I actually sit on the floor. It also doesn't happen first thing in the morning. Does it matter, or is it just normal? I don't remember it when I was younger! (I'm 56 now.)

      Definitely there is a "cause" that needs to be found and corrected...ask your health care provider for help...best wishes.

      You’re cutting off blood flow in that position. When you stand up it begin to flow more by the lack of it will cause this feeling. Postural hypotension.

      If you’re holding your breath that may be why. I hold my breath when I’m bent over. Take a few good breaths and then stoop down. Also I find I’m barely breathing while sitting relaxing and so now I make a conscious effort to breathe while relaxing watching tv, knitting, reading or whatever.

    I have been tensing all my muscles in my head, it has become automatic now. I try to be conscious, but can't believe how often I do it.
    What I do is the same as wiggling your ears, but I can move my whole scalp, and I just keep it tensed. Now I have light headedness, gone for tests on Carotid artery, CT scan all were negative. Going to try these exercises 🙏

    I’m going to practice this. I’ve been suffering with this for 5 years and it seemed like it took a break for about 1 but it has come back after some hard weeks at work. I have seen a neurologist, a chiropractor, and ENT, eye doctor, and even did some physical therapy a few times only to have them say that they didn’t think my issue was musculoskeletal and none of the doctors seemed to believe that my issues stemmed from my neck.This time the dizziness came around after having muscle spasms on my shoulders and chest from heavy lifting at work. When my shoulder and chest muscles seemed to have chilled is when the dizziness came back. It’s not just dizziness that comes with it either, in the span of a week I’ve gone through all the symptoms that are listed on the complaints for stiff SCM muscle. I’m going to see my doctor soon and explain these issues, hopefully she can direct me to the right person but until then I’m going to use this vid and other videos that address dizziness from the neck. Thanks for the video.

    About 5 months ago I suddenly felt dizzy and have continued since then.
    Doctors cleared me of everything. Even had a brain scan. But still get this wobbly, lurching pulsing dizzyness. Like im bobbing up and down.
    Excercise or even just being outside seems to help. I hope it turns out to be treatable

    Hey, Dr. Jon Saunders! I appreciate this video. When I wake up and stretch, I hold my breath ( because it feels right), I then move my head from left to right and I try to feel a burning in my rhomboids/lats and inner clavical. My concern is that sometimes if I push it to much I’ll get so dizzy I might lose control of my body. Was doing deadlifts yesterday and it happened and then after my run it happened again. I’m wondering if you have any tips or pointers.
