ORIGINAL: • Pearl Jam - Jeremy (Of...
Try to erase it from the blackboard is one of the most powerful line in a song for me. It refers to the blood and flesh of the poor kid bullied by the class and suicide in front of them, and also metaphorically, the memories that all his classmates could not erase for the rest of their lifes. For me... amazing.
True story of boy named Jeremy who took his life in front of his class. Eddie better had to bring awareness to this look info on song. Just like evenflow is about a homeless man I think he ran into or met it refers to homeless on the streets if you would like to read more into them. Love all your reactions. Much love ❤
'Jeremy' is based on two different true stories, the main inspiration is of Jeremy, a 15-year-old who shot himself in front of his English class in 1991. This is such a powerful and thought provoking song and video from Pearl Jam about an horrific and desperately tragic incident. The other true story involves a student that Eddie Vedder knew from his junior high school, he did something similar but didn't take his life. Really appreciate your reaction, Anthony, many thanks.❤
This is not the song You should listen to without video! It is a great song by itself but, paired with the video, it became an iconic, ground breaking work of art that should be experienced as such to get the full effect!❤
Bullying was ignored in schools during the 80’s and early 90’s. The teachers generally ignored it. I like to think this song was one of the reasons it started to change
Back in the day, when this video played, the weapon and the scene with the protagonist placing it his mouth was censored. So, for years, many of us thought he shot up the class, not himself. It's so weird what they choose to censor and how it affects the interpretation of the song and video.
Yeah I had only seen the censored video. I thought my old timers kicked in and I had remembered incorrectly.
The Bellamy salute, which has been completely erased from the history books. We remember what we choose to remember 😂😂
True story about Jeremy. I was living in Garland, TX when I heard about this. This happened the next city over in Richardson, TX. in an affluent part of the city.
You are very perceptive! You are a smart reactioner. Blessings 🙏🏽
Your review was perfect. We all miss something the first time we watch, listen or hear. Thank you for sharing this one. It is very powerful & very raw. Be well! =)
The salute is not the Nazi salute although it is similar.
It is the Bellamy salute that Americans previously used to salute the American flag during the Pledge of Allegiance.
When Hitler began using one that was very similar we stopped using it.
I'm unclear as to why it was included save to make sure the viewer is paying attention and questioning it therefore also paying attention to Jeremy's story.
I could be very wrong (it's happened before lol) but to me, it feels like it's showing that everyone else is "together" while Jeremy is the outsider. It could also be a representation of conformism or groupthink. Again, without an actual answer from the director, it's conjecture but it certainly gives some feels.
@@matthew6427 very good point!
Every song on their album TEN is equally as good! ✌️❤️🤘
My favorite album of all time!
The boy who played Jeremy in this video died in a drowning accident. I remember when he went on stage with Pearl Jam for an award for this song.
Great reaction! I very clearly remember the moment I first saw this video. It's so powerful. This video was censored (as some others mentioned), then banned, and then it won awards. MTV didn't quite know what to do with it. Pearl Jam are still touring, and still releasing music (though it has changed a bit as they've grown older). I saw them again last summer, and they're still one of the best live bands around. I recommend the live performance of Better Man from Madison Square Garden in 2010. It's a good illustration of the fan support this band has always had.
It’s the verse that Eve is tempted by the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil
Thank you, great reaction.
Such a devastating story, I wonder if any in the class or Jeremy's parents owned up to their responsibility in this story. Jeremy was so broken, bullied and ignored by his parents, and in so much pain that he did not see any other course other than to leave. His parents were consumers of that apple/sin as were the class, Jeremy however threw the apple passed on to him to the teacher. Jeremy did not take revenge, cause a school mass shooting, his predicament came from others who had gladly eaten the apple.
I'm not religious so I do not hold those that see any no other way out as sinners. I just see failures in those around the person, and ask for more awareness from everyone on their own state, and to consider how their actions impact others.
Love, love, love Pearl Jam. Great reaction!! 😊
This was shattering when it came out; pre-Columbine - it was before kids bringing guns to school (and using them) were a thing. Unfortunately, the video was censored by Mtv, so the video was also misinterpreted. Su!c*de was also not discussed openly. I was in high school when Jeremy checked out, so it was refreshing when this song came out the next year. This was when grunge was starting to chart, and Rock sonics were changing from clean & pretty to this grungier, gritty, sometimes ugly sound. It wasn't about sounding appealing, but conveying emotion. Serendipitous that the story(stories) and the sound happened at the same time. The same lyrics and wailing wouldn't have worked with radio rock (GunsNRoses, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, etc) of the time. Vedder's singing works perfectly.
The final tableau is perhaps the most chilling in music video history, with the mute screams of the golden cherubs of the Cranberries' "Zombie" being a close contender.
The salute the children give is the Bellamy salute as they recited the pledge of allegiance. It's not the salute that it first appears to be. As others have said, the song is based on two true stories.
I have never saluted like that reciting the Pledge of Allegiance in 53 years. I've also never witnessed anyone else saluting like this either. This was a sig heil (spelled incorrect I am sure). It references the conditioning of unquestioning loyalty to the institutions of the State. Anthony had it correct.
@@janiepowell3218 I've never done that salute either, the only time my arm is up in that fashion, I am pointing something out . I just went to search, the Bellamy salute was discontinued in 1942 due to the Sieg Heil being too similar
"The original Bellamy salute, first described in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, who authored the original Pledge, began with a military salute, and after reciting the words "to the flag," the arm was extended toward the flag. At a signal from the Principal the pupils, in ordered ranks, hands to the side, face the Flag."
It would be nice if our history ya know actually taught history
This is the greatest music video of all time and PJ are one of the greatest bands of all time. Still killin it.🤘
It was the original pledge of allegiance, the Bellamy salute. Remember the swastika was originally a sign for many people of goodwill, hope, etc. As the Bellamy salute was also redirected towards a symbol of another meaning. Interesting that both the salute and swastika became a symbol of defiance for the same era and group.
Amazing story and reaction. Dude you are so intelligent.
A sophomore on high school when this album.and sing dropped. Absolutely blew the lid off our cobceot of mysuc. Tge raw emotion and piwer that came through in lyrics and Eddies voice are beauriful and haunting. This song was wrenching as i was already familiar with suicide and childhood bullying.
I have loved this song for years, never until today have i seen the video. Probably because mtv and vh1 wouldn't play it. I knew it was about a dysfunctional family so i could relate. I also picked up on the bullying hints, but only slightly. Hearing this song at the age of 7 and growing up with those common themes i could relate. But just after a week from my 37th birthday i saw for the first time the true meaning of this song. I never knew it ended in suicide. I always thought he was commited to an asylum. I still relate to this song, even more now. Unlike Jeremy i never lashed out. However i did feel a strong urge to give up.the bullying wanst bad. It was the home life. At least the bullies acknowledged my existence. Home was empty. Unlike Jeremy however i found a friend. He saved my life. I then made friends with the bullies, and the pain away from home stopped. When i got home, it got dark again. Sorry seeing this video brought back so many memories. Although i can relate there is always another way out. I dont condone bullying, and i despise parents that dont care or act like there kids are burdens. This song highlights both.
💙💙Trevor Wilson AKA "Jeremy" sadly passed away at the young age of 36 in Puerto Rico Aug 7, 2016. He was vacationing and went for a swim. He got caught up in a riptide and drown. It should have never happened! There should have been signs posted with warnings but then that would scare off the tourists, now wouldn't it? Trevor did an amazing job in this video. He was more than the character in this video. He had hopes and big dreams for his life and that was sadly taken away from him too soon. REST IN PEACE TREVOR. You'll never be forgotten. 💙💙✝
This is a great song and a very outstanding video that goes with it. This is based on Jeremy Wade Delle who shot himself infront of his class at school. Thanks for the reaction and happy holidays to you and your family. 🎄🥂 Take care 😘🏴
all time powerful classic! ♥
Sadly I read somewhere that the boy portraying the bullied child in this vid died in a drowning accident in his early 30s though I didn’t verify the information personally.
Yes, you're right, according to google, the actor was Trevor Wilson who sadly drowned in 2016 at the age of 36 while swimming in Puerto Rico.
"Jeremy spoke in class today." Probably the most under-stated line in music history. He spoke all right...
Beautiful reaction!
The song hits a lot harder with the video for sure 😢
My understanding is Eddie. Vedder wrote this after reading a news story about Jeremy Delle a 15 year old boy who walked into class at school, took a gun out of his backpack and shot himself in the head in front of the class. This opens a conversation about teen depression and suicide and basically describes how Jeremy was just blown off by everyone around him.
Pearl Jam still tours. I went to their concert last summer and I think they released new dates. Also, Jeremy was based on true events.
This song was written about an actual event in Richardson Texas.
I remember how impactful the film clip was when it first came out, remembering thinking you never know what someone is going through.
Unfortunately this sort of message wouldn't air today.
I live in the U.S. and learned things by watching your reaction to this video because you took time and effort to try to understand the lyrics. Musically and vocally, this is a powerful performance. I am only somewhat familiar with Pearl Jam and this era of grunge. Music was mostly an escape for me having plenty of my own life stuff to deal with. It's good to revisit after doing enough healing to not become just another statistic. Thanks AR.
There's an interview with Cobain that he wasn't really a fan of most of Pearl Jam's music, but he didn't dislike it either. He was friends with members of the band though, and had only nice things to say about Eddie Vedder, who had only recently joined the Grunge scene in Seattle (he was living in California). Cobain was a bit of an artistic 'diva' that didn't hold back on his thoughts when it came to what he thought were overhyped celebrities. I loved that about him... he believed in authenticity above likeability.
It's just not the American MTV version of the video . . .they did something with the camera where you didn't see what he had. We had to infer what happened at the end by Eddie's hand gesture. Also the curse words were censored out..blah.
He made them remember and feel his pain for the rest if their lives.
Dam that man can sing
This is mind blowing. It's like a prophecy of what was soon to become. 😢
Genesis 3:16.
To the woman he said, 'I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children. Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you'".
Great review
This still hits like a truck. I haven't seen this since it came out in the 90s.
In memory of an actual event that took place in Texas when a 16 year old boy took his life in front of his class.
Jeremy Delle was 15 years old.
Rest in peace, Jeremy
Saw them both at the same show in Seattle
For the record, this band got a lot of heat back in the day for making up the background story about a real boy, the parents were very concerned about the child and went out of their way to try to provide mental health support, but that didn’t make for a good song so they projected their story on this poor kid who isn’t here to defend himself or his family.
This is a true story...
Great reaction. You still have much more Alice in Chains & Mad Season, which Layne Staley headed up too. The whole AIC MTV unplugged from 1996 is phenomenal, especially considering how sick Layne was (unlike his prime when you saw him doing Love Hate Love). The song list is long & incredible ❤
AWESOME REACTION MY DEAR, HAVE YOU REACTED TO PEARL JAM'S "DO THE EVOLUTION"? IT'S INCREDIBLE MUSIC VIDEO. ANOTHER SUGGESTION IS PEARL JAM COVERS THE WHO'S "REIGN O'VER ME" AND "THE REAL ME" AT THE WHO'S ANNIVERSARY TRIBUTE. ONE THING PEARL JAM DOES IS GREAT COVERS!! MY FAVORITE BAND ON THIS CRAZY PLANET THANK YOU FOR SHARING THIS INCREDIBLE VIDEO. AND YES LOOK AT THE STORY OF JEREMY. 😊💓🔥🤘✌️
SORRY ABOUT THE ALL CAPS I CAN'T SEE VERY WELL SO I APOLOGIZE.
20th Century "seen not heard"
This song sounds unplugged even better!
You should give it a listen. 🖤
No it doesn't lol
@jessiekrijgsman7884 That's a matter of taste. 😊
Many people are starting to realize that institutionalized education may not be the right choice for every child. More children are being diagnosed with mental health or learning disabilities. Can you remember anyone from your early school years who was on the spectrum?
With mothers working instead of raising their families and most children having split-up parents (some with deadbeat dads), it's no wonder our children are suffering.
Then, we send them into the halls of academia where they're normalized. They are told how to dress, how to behave, and how to think.
They should, instead, be taught the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetics. Once achieved, teach them how to think instead of what to think by opening discussions. History is written by the winners of wars, they say. Just because they won doesn't mean they were right?
Add on top of all of that the intense peer pressure from affluent, cookie-cutter kids who can't tolerate anything or anyone that's different. How do some kids make it through high school without mental damage?
Children are special, sensitive, and highly suggestible. Be careful what you pour into them because that's what will eventually pour out of them.
"Jeremy" is based on two different true stories. Firstly, the song was inspired by a newspaper article about a 15-year-old boy named Jeremy Wade Delle from Texas, who shot himself in front of his teacher and his English class on January 8, 1991. In a 2009 interview, Vedder said that he felt "the need to take that small article and make something of it-to give that action, to give it reaction, to give it more importance." Jeremy had been described as "real quiet" and "sad". When he arrived at class late that fateful morning, and was told to report to the headmaster's office for a tardy slip, he left momentarily, but then returned with a .357 Magnum revolver announcing, "Miss, I got what I really went for", before putting the barrel of the gun into his mouth and pulling the trigger in front of the entire class. When asked about the song, Vedder explained: "It came from a small paragraph in a paper... you kill yourself and you make a big old sacrifice and try to get your revenge... all you're gonna end up with is a paragraph in a newspaper. Sixty-four degrees and cloudy in a suburban neighborhood. That's the beginning of the video and that's the same thing in the end; it does nothing... nothing changes. The world goes on and you're gone." The other inspiration for the song was a school shooting involving a student that Vedder had know from his junior high school in San Diego, California. Btw, the bible passage you were wondering about regarding the 'fruit of the tree' refers to the original sin in the Garden of Eden, and the fall.
Last my father "suddenly"around the time of this album the song "release" the lyrics destroy me to this day. Music really connects
should definitley check out the story behind the song
Genesis 3:6 refers to the original sin, the entering of sin into the world, in the Garden of Eden. The eating of the apple offered by the serpent. The whole song is basically describing sin after sin committed against Jeremy.
The even crazier thing about this song/video is a different Biblical lesson. "You reap what you sow." If you sow trauma (bullying) don't be surprised with what you reap (PTSD from school shooting).
Love Pearl Jam ❤ Thank you for reacting to them. The live performance of this song on MTV Unplugged is 🔥
Please also react to Silverchair - Pure Massacre, and Tomorrow
should be watched in school nowadays to add to real lessons. And yes, Nirvana and Pearl Jam are from the same "Grunge"-time.
Mommy wouldnt "wear" the burden that was Jeremy
There's an amazing performance of this on MTV Unplugged that I think you'd really dig. Actually, there's quite a few great videos from the grunge bands from that series.
yo... i just found my new favorite reactor.
Coming Down by Five Finger Death Punch is another about bullying. Great message
It is great when a music video provides an additional layer of symbolism and meaning to enjoy. Unfortunately, a lot of music videos are not so artfully made. Especially in the early days of music videos, before they realized that these things would be long-lasting documents of the work, the artists often put little thought into the videos, or would create something that would date the music, or create the wrong context.
You MUST react to their song "Porch" live at PinkPop next.
Believe it or not, one of my best friends worked with Jeremy’s parents. It happened in Richardson Tx. They were not the parents described in this song. Jeremy was the one with issues. Eddie never had this emotion on stage, like he seems to have in this video.
When I a DJ, people would call and ask for the song “Jeremy smoked some Grass today”. ☮️❤️🎼🎼😎
On your own realize that hes saying erase this from the blackboard, and it was jeremy's brains on the blackboard... 😭😢
Deep deep art.
Just a note about the Nazi salute. Before they do that they have their hands on their hearts, because most schools would start the day with the Pledge of Allegiance with your hand on your heart swearing allegiance and devotion to the American Flag...
Im sure some people talked about it, but I think the Adam and eve reference, refers to the loss of innocence when eve ate the apple, just like the loss of a child's innocence in this video. I also believe the nazi hail symbolism is about conformity. And group bully mentality.
Wow! I never really understood the song fully until now… kinda shook. I got the bullying part but not the ending! Thanks for doing the video. I saw Pearl Jam in Dallas, Tx and I hate to say this, it was the worst concert I’ve ever seen and I have been to about 150 concerts. Eddie was so wasted you couldn’t even understand what was coming out of his mouth [ I drove 200 miles for that show]. Broke my heart 💔.
For those with no music ear: this song was a hit not because of the lyrics or the music video.
As far as I am aware, that salute preceded being used by Nazi party by certain political factions throughout Europe and America (20s and 30s).
I always felt that when they did the Nazi salute it was drawing a comparison as to how any child who is different is persecuted in school, sometimes by teachers but especially by the other students.
they did the Bellamy salute. nobody seems to know it existing long before 1930s Germany.
1:23… going into this with no context?? oh boy… here we go
gotta watch the music video
I have always appreciated Artists who are not held back/quiet about Society's Ills and the Dark Side of Human Nature ... should do the video "I'm Not Jesus" with Apocalyptica feat Cory Taylor original video.
This is not the original video I found the original on google and I don't know if it's ever been found
True story - out side of Dallas
The Bible verse shows when Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, causing sin to come into the world. It pertains to this song because it shows the reason for his father's selfishness, his mother's lack of love for him, and Jeremy's evil thoughts which are now consuming him and leading to his final action - his suicide.
That Genesis verse is the original sin.
It has a lilith feel to why eve gave the apple to adam. Like the not-to-be-trusted aspects of Abrahamic rhetoric perhaps
Do the evolution (official music video) #Pearljam
🖤
There's nothing in this track that is symbolic. Pearl Jam's lyrics were very matter of fact and literal, if a touch descriptive as though they had graduated with a Creative Writing degree from Emerson out of Boston.
and the boy was something that mommy wouldnt wear, probably, for me atleast, means that they didnt fit each other
Jeremy was bullied. Sometimes this is the way it ends. Sometimes the bullies are the ones that get gone. I'm canadian and I can't believe the amount of times this shit happens in N.A. Mostly the States but it happens up here too. Start with Charles Whitman on up to Denis Lortie to Columbine and beyond. Anyone who conducts acts like these has some kind of mental defect, no matter how sane and innocent they look or sound. Cheers, the canadian true crime buff.
It took me like 8 years before I got what this was really about! It is so heavy and painful! It is a fantastic song that I love but I also hate it cause of the meaning!
😊
I'm not sure but, I think the salute refers to group think, group actions. We are all susceptible to this, but kids, even more so! So sad
Pledge of alligience to the American flag, not a nazi salute. Although, when you think about it...
Genesis 3:6 is when sin and death came into the world.
Gen 3:6 is the moment of "original sin". the first sin ever committed by humans
Genesis 3:6 = original sin
"Try to erase this from the blackboard"... now you know what he was trying to erase
Genesis 3:6 is the passage where man made the choice to disobey God and be separated from him. It's the original sin.
Bushwick SKITSO.
Genesis 3:16
If you feel like being confused listen to yellow ledbetter
The bible reference speaks about humanity's original sin. I guess because Jeremy committed the sin of suicide, hence the bible reference.
