Yeah, they had to replace the blackboard because it was permanently stained and broken by the gunshot and resulting, umm... you know... blood and stuff. I don't think they ever did have another class in that room, even today. I think they specifically remodelled it into storage or something. Any class taught in that room would be unproductive anyway I don't think a kid would be able to concentrate without thinking "This is where that kid in the Pearl Jam song killed himself."
This song is based on a true story of a boy who shot himself in front of his English class. Eddie Vedder read a newspaper article about it and felt compelled to write about it. Powerful video which won numerous awards at the time it came out. Or try watching ANY of the songs from their MTV Unplugged concert; especially “Porch”, “State of Love and Trust”, and the classic, “Black”.

It was called the Bellamy salute, after the man who wrote the Pledge of Allegiance. When Hitler began using the same salute though, Congress changed the official way of addressing the flag to placing a hand over your heart. I’m not sure how it’s supposed to be interpreted in the video, but it gives you some context. I don’t believe Jeremy Delle, the boy who killed himself, had any sort of Nazi ideology. He was simply a disturbed 15-year-old.
I think the usage of the Bellamy salute actually is a reference to outdated ways of doing things - Exactly what you explained, how it changed from being used every day in schools in America to salute a flag and then being used by Hitler as a salute as well - almost drawing a comparison between the two. What seems like a benign hand gesture as a salutation can have a very dark, very dangerous connotation. Also, I think it may be a reference to the rigidity and structure and discipline that is taught in schools, back in the day often through corporal punishment and a kind of tolerance towards bullying of children by adults and other children as a form of "lesson teaching". A kind of commentary on how something as seemingly harmless as saluting a flag can quickly turn into outright Fascism, perhaps?
Also, on Nazi ideology and that symbolism in that context - the character Jeremy from the song becomes hostile in his own mind, envisioning dead people at his feet, cowering to "King Jeremy", a ruthless, vengeful, powerful dictator version of himself who punishes those who dare to transgress his authority that he has created in his own mind to cope with his reality. Basically the polar opposite of a troubled young boy who feels alone, unloved, unnoticed. In this way, Jeremy the character from this song has created a version of himself with very harmful thoughts. Not unlike a Nazi dictator.

On the front it has a child playing with crayons and there is a gun laying nearby with the word "choices" and the back has a box of crayons drawn with the black crayon out of the box and broken in half and the back says, "9 out of 10 kids prefer crayons to guns". I was suspended from school for wearing it and banned from ever wearing it again inside of any building in my school district. I was in 4th grade maybe 5th at the time?

I was the female version of Jeremy without a gun or a voice. Just picked on mercilessly until I grew up with zero self esteem. Luckily as an adult I am able to live a normal life. This song came out at the tail end of my schooling and it was surreal!!

I agree suicide needs to be discussed more. It’s still a topic people don’t want to talk about as a result people considering ending their life don’t feel like they can talk with anyone about it. Sometimes the end is cutout but I don’t think it should be sugarcoated. People need to know what happens to a mentally ill person who isn’t getting help.
This was based on a true story, and last I paid attention, Jeremy's parents didn't like the song or video. If your kid shot his self in front of his class and died you probably wouldnt like hearing it every 5 seconds.
The parents felt that they were being accused of child neglect and abuse when the song was really just loosely inspired by the story of the real life Jeremy. The band didn't intend to cause problems for the family, it was just a thing that happened because of the way the media latched onto it. I can see the parents' point from their perspective but I can also see the band's point from their perspective. The song and video needed to be made
