On the salute to the flag: info, The Bellamy salute is a palm-out salute created by James B. Upham as the gesture that was to accompany the American Pledge of Allegiance, whose text had been written by Francis Bellamy. It was also known as the "flag salute.”
Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, Italian fascists and Nazi Germans adopted a salute which was very similar, attributed to the Roman salute, a gesture that was popularly believed to have been used in ancient Rome.[1] This resulted in controversy over the use of the Bellamy salute in the United States. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.

Its based on two seperate stories. One being the story of Jeremy wade Dele which the primary influence where he walked up in front of his class and blew his brains out. But also there was a kid Eddie used to bully back in high school that went up on the roof of the high school and jumped to his death Eddie wasn't there that day but of course he heard about it. So the he hit me with a surprise left was in reference to the kid he used to bully.

I was forty years old when this song ( and video ) were released on MTV. I remember not being able to understand all the words he was singing and most of us didn't have the internet then to "look them up". Being bullied for eight years in school, I can really identify with the song.

No one ever catches that this lyric " King Jeremy the wicked ruled his world" is more like "King Jeremy, the wicked ruled his world" if you say it one way it sounds like he's the wicked one but he's not he's the hero in his own story unfortunately he just couldn't take it no more

@@90sGrungeFreak yeah i just notice that most reactors don't catch it, it's assumed he is the wicked, but the whole thing is to show him feeling like he is being attacked so he felt like he was the wicked cuz that's how people perceived him it's a good mix of both story's, idk if the real Jeremy if he was attacked or if he was how but he was obviously going through something irl because the mental frustrations he had were very real I hope him n others like him have found peace

One of the reasons why he wrote this song was the fact that Jeremy's tragedy was only on a small article in the back of a newspaper instead of the front page PLUS the fact that the school leadership wanted to erase this tragedy as if it didn't happen thus the "try to erase it from a blackboard" lyric.

"And the boy was something that Mommy wouldn't wear." What a way of describing the feeling that you're an object or possession in your family; that you don't feel like you fit in; that you don't think you meet your parents' expectations. (And a touch of the greedy consumerism of the 80s).
Yeah, this video was censored when it released. Many people misunderstood that it was Jeremy shooting his classmates. This was before Columbine, before school sh00tings were commonplace. Intense.

  • @ghoulie11
    @ghoulie11 6 месяцев назад +6

Interesting note, when Eddie sings about picking on the boy that bit the recess ladies breast, and getting hit with a surprise left. Eddie isn't singing about Jeremy at that point, he's singing about a personal experience he had in school where he picked on another student.

The first time I was ever suspended from school was in elementary school for wearing the Pearl Jam shirt that was produced for this song. The shirt design is called "Choices" and it has a kid sitting with a box of crayons and a gun in front of them and they're reaching for the gun. On the back it says "9 out of 10 kids choose crayons over guns". I was suspended and the shirt was banned by the school system of South Carolina for inappropriate imagery. Imagine that shit

    Fun Fact #1
This was filmed at my high school in Bayonne, NJ. The classroom is located in the original building before they added to it.
    Fun Fact #2
The video was edited to take out the gun going in the kids mouth and as a result it was worse because now the kids look like he shot them.
The kid was bullied and had mental health issues. He made the song because this was becoming a bigger issue and no one was speaking on it. When you have a platform you have a responsibility to use it properly. This was not too long before Columbine and the rising school shootings. It's kind of warning that many just closed their ears on. Here the kid hurt himself due to the bullying, a few years later they began taking others with them.

The beginning and end of the video state the day and weather to signify that life goes afterwards. The kid wanted to make a scene and be remembered forever. Instead, the incident was just a small paragraph in the newspaper. The world just kept going as it was.
The only way to make a difference is to keep fighting and not give up on life. That's how you win in the long run. Not by suicide.

    • @neilpatrickhairless

But also alludes to the fact that while sad, still after death no one gave a shit. It was a news piece and the world moved on like nothing happened. No gun legislation, no mental health. Just judgement. The thing that forced him to kill himself in the first place. Humans... most intelligent species. Yeah, okay

I was suspended in elementary school for wearing the shirt that was produced for this song. The shirt design is called "Choices". I was suspended and the shirt banned from the school system in the very Conservative, very gun-friendly State that I live in for "inappropriate design or imagery". Micromanagement to avoid introspection and adult responsibility at its finest. Fast forward 30 or so years and Texas, the State the real life Jeremy lived in, passed HB 1147. It's enough to gag a person.

oh man, please do not judge. Everyone has a story. Maybe yours does not include what others who have had suicidal ideation have gone through. Teenagers especially are bullied more today more than ever due to the internet and social media. The world has moved on in such strange ways and most not for the better. We have incredibly high rates of suicide in the Veteran community. Please, If you do not have clinical depression or other mental illness or chronic physical illness, do not judge. No, he didn't. *The video on MTV was censored (both language and content)* , it flashed from him tossing the apple to facing the class, the top of his face (from the nose) and then the kids being splashed with red being in shock. That's what the line "try to erase this from the blackboard" is trying to convey. The MTV video did show Eddie's pantomime leading to self harm, instead of turning it on the kids.
