"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life I know you'll be a star in somebody else's sky But why, why, why can't it be Oh, can't it be mine?" The whole song is brilliant but this line gives me chills every time.
The seattle grunge bands weren't just around the same time, they all knew each other well. Pearl Jam, Soundgarten, Nirvana, Alice In Chains. They all saw each other around town. Eddie Vedder singing this live when he dedicated it to Chris Cornell after his death.. Wowsers what an emotional one. He breaks down in the end. It’s a must check out for anyone who has not seen it and loves this song or Cornell 😢

This song is unplugged, which is why it sounds so "timid" to you. It's grunge rock. And their sound is usually much harder than this. MTV had a show called MTV Unplugged where they invited all the bit artists to come play their songs but stripped down to a more acoustic format. The official version of this song is much more rocky, but for this song especially I love this version best. That man spilled his soul all over that stage and it was beautiful.
Lots of great Pearl Jam songs to check out. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chans all came out of the same scene in Seattle, in the late 80s/early 90s. You can't go wrong with any of them. Also, Eddie Vedder wasn't part of The Doors, but he did sing with them when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Apparently The Doors said they would only perform if Eddie would sing with them. Those videos are worth checking out to. He did an amazing job!
Pearl Jam was formed from the band Mother Love Bone. When Eddie Vedder was there for his audition, Chris Cornell was recording a song for his tribute album. He was having a difficult time hitting the low notes of the song. Eddie started singing with him. This was the beginning of Pearl Jam. The song is Hunger Strike by Temple of the Dog. You seldom hear two of the greatest voices on the same tract!

Grunge. Came out of Seattle at the very beginning of the grunge movement along with nirvana at the same time. Eddie Vedder is a master vocalist. I've watched this a few times - Pearl Jam Unplugged - 'Black', it's an amazing performance in my opinion. Eddie Vedder has a great voice, as you say fantastic vocals. The song 'Black' was released in 1991 and this Unplugged performance was done in 1992.
You are also watching the MTV Unplugged version, which was a series on MTV where electric bands were stripped down to play acoustic versions in a small studio audience. It was a great series, with many great bands of the time. The studio original is different. Eddie Vedder had laryngitis the day before but still performed which you can hear in some of his cracking vocals. Did a great performance still.
Nirvana and Pearl Jam came around at the same time, essentially early '90s, and from the same area in Seattle. I didn't see anyone comment that. Along with Alice in Chains and Soundgarden. They all knew each other. An epic era in rock n roll history

In the early 1990s, a new rock sound came out of the Seattle, Washington area. The genre was labeled "grunge" rock. Eddie stage dived during "Alive" and surfed the crowd for a good twenty feet before getting back to the stage. Music just isn't the same anymore. I think autotune, shows like American Idol and The Voice had a lot to do with it. Name one band that came out in the last twenty years that comes close to a Pearl Jam or Nirvana. Just in case you still think they are a paler version of Nirvana, you need to watch Evenflow by Pearl Jam. Some of my favorite voices from that era are Scott Weiland, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, and Eddie Vedder.

When society thinks men don’t agonize about the loss of a relationship, they need to watch this
Every man has felt this, but not all men can write about it and express it this way.
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life

But why, why, why can't it be
