- Perfect for streaming to Xsplit or just capturing gameplay footage from your PC or console without additional CPU overhead. It also allows you to stream at a DIFFERENT resolution than you're using to play, which can help save bandwidth (ie play on your PC at 1080p and stream at 720p)

No I'm not a Pewdiepie bro. I only mentioned him because he's the largest game streaming RUclipsr right now. I can't figure out why he's so huge, but it never hurts to study it when someone finds a winning formula...
I love how it's actually 60fps now :D
2012: Saw it laggy
2015: Saw it as he said 60FPS.
Futurer won!!! :D
I have this card. Have had it for 5 months now! Love it and it doesn't slow my computer down at all. Very easy setting up also. Files from the recordings are also very small if you use the software that comes with it or other recording softwares cause it compresses it.
You make the best unboxing linus, always tell all the information needs to be known.
Great as always.
I've had this card for about 6 months and I love it. I stream on Twitch.tv and this has improved the look of my stream and taken the load off my PC which means more fps. Even if you are not wanting to stream the capture feature is great, especially the button if you don't want to constantly record.
You're right, the main playback resolution on youtube, is either 360p or 720p/1080p depending on your playback settings. All three of which are MP4. On the other hand, that good old 480p, that you need to select manually because youtube will almost never choose it by default, is still FLV.
I'm really not sure I understand this message. What do you mean?
Raw frames just means it doesn't comply with the interleaving of AVI. It still uses whatever codec you choose to compress each frame.
I have this card and absolutely love it! Ive have the colossus too and its garbage in comparison. And what make this device even better is the software that comes with it. Very easy and simple to use.
I have one that I'm going to install in my PC tonight! what a coincidence that he did the unboxing of this today! I'm looking forward to capturing Halo 4 footage with this bad boy.
If you want to record "240p" from something with analog video you need an analog capture and do post-editing to adjust the dimensions and framerate.
If you have a gaming PC that can play 1080p content smoothly, chances are your CPU will be just fine with compression in Dxtory. I would highly recommend trying it out with a codec of choice like Ut, then if you find you are getting dropped frames, you can invest in this.
Old consoles use NTSC which is about 640x480 interlaced. The internal resolution of snes/nes is typically 256x224. Because of this, you can use both "fields" to output the entire resolution of the game at 60 FPS. Genesis is something like 320x224 and PSX is typically 320/256x240/224. But none of them, without some soldering, actually output a progressive scan signal, they just happened to have a height that was small enough to fit in each individual "field".
Video recording on PC relies on CPU though. Normally it would be that you want to buy a better CPU instead, unless your GPU needs upgrading.
The thing is that hardware that works on PCI are relatively future-proof compared to CPUs, which change sockets every year (kind of) and require a new motherboard just to upgrade your CPU. Buying this might save money in the long-run when video games need more CPU power and you can't spare any to record footage.
1080p requires a huge amount of bandwidth. some internet companies limit your monthly bandwidth. after you hit the cap. the ISP can charge you by GB. in some places its higher then $3/GB after the cap.
HDMI/DVI adapters only adapt the physical layer. If the HDMI signal uses HDCP it will get transmitted through the DVI cable.
No, the hardware does all the encoding and processing itself. Although the set-up might be quite complicated from what I've heard.
That is not a cable, but a converter you're supposed to use to plug your graphics card into the live gamer HD. (that's why it's slightly longer htan a normal converter)
I saw one once that had what looked like an HDMI port, but was in reality a modular connector for a crazy octopus of analog connectors. That would probably work, just make sure you use a capture software that preserves the interlacing. Most programs that de-interlace on the fly do so in a way that is irreversible and isn't the best quality. Remember, leave the post-processing until after you record, then you will be able to do it right and unrushed.
Xsplit works fine, I don't know why people hate it so much. If you don't like it use something else, there are alternatives, but to me Xsplit has been the easiest to use, and it's provided better quality on my streams compared to FFSplit, Adobe Media Encoder, and even Wirecast. I stream regularly using Xsplit and a Black Magic Intensity Pro
There might be an issue using this card though. You go from your GPU to this card then out to your monitor. Depending on how fast this card renders, you might experience input lag since you do have to go through another medium before it outputs to your monitor.
There's no reason to think it would introduce lag. The signal is probably split in two lanes after the input. 1 going back to the output, and 1 going to the encoder. Then you don't have to wait for the encoder (which rightfully would probably have introduced some lag). This way it's just like adding a few cm of cable which does nothing.
Won't capture HDCP protected content
you're right, but it's not as high as you might think. even WD Greens are fast enough for this purpose (the main criticism of them is their responsiveness from 'sleep')
I do weekly live streams and I haven't removed anything...
There is no lag that the human eye can notice so far. I'm using it right now with my dual monitor set up and I can't notice any lag whatsoever -- and believe me, if there was, I would notice.
Do you run this in the current computer that your gaming on and it just offloads the processor encoding to the device or is it ideal to have 2 PC's side by side, one for render/streaming - the other for for gaming?
THIS IS GOOD. THIS IS HOW LINUS TECH TIPS SHOULD BE. GOOD QUALITY AND AWESOME LINUS
all of my videos have been recorded by this thing. it was simple to install and use the software, and the videos come out great.
I'm guessing here, but I don't think you could use your Tiamat, unless you know of a way to tell your OS to output sound through both analog and HDMI connectors at the same time. The mic on the Tiamat is USB, so I presume the Xsplit software would capture that. And no, you can't capture Tiamat audio on this capture card: the card has only one analog in connector, and the Tiamat has five audio cables.
Linus can you do a full review of the capture card and its software? That would be really great
The reason for that is because some people do not have the sufficient internet speed to watch videos at 1080p. If I were to click the 1080p option, then I would have to wait 7 minutes for it to load/buffer.
in the CPU usage mainly...if you have a dedicated capture card with a CPU you wont get the CPU usage higher...it just takes the job from you CPU and f.e. you get better performance while gaming
DVI is just HDMI it just can't transfer sound, the quality is the same between the 2, just hdmi can do audio on the same cord.
you can convert hdmi hdcp protected content by converting it to dvi then back to hdmi clears the hdcp protection
I'm using Fraps for recording HD gaming and the files hare huge. It also brings loads of issues to rendering. I may have to save up for one of these...
RUclips only appears in 30fps so what's the problem? Your alternative is a beast video card and processor that can handle 1080p@60fps.
Get Dxtory, set it up right and record. then use sony vegas to edit and render in MP4 and you come out with videos about 1GB for 15minutes (I do at least) makes uploading 1080p a lot easier. without buying anything. js
720P at 60FPS will also help with slo-motion shots.
Not quite true, pretty much all 6/8 core CPU's can handle 1080p60 which is why most people who do any sort of video editing / rendering would want a 6 or 8 core processor. It's not all about CPU power though, recording any sort of video stream also requires a just as fast a drive to record to as the CPU does
I've changed all my settings on my GTX670. I've used several different monitors to try things out. My computer is also very new and I highly doubt that is the problem. I think it just might be the card.
hmmmm, anolog capture card?. interesting. I thought the black magic could caputre analog because it has the inputs for componant and even standard analog... Ive found a few cheap scalers on ebay that might work out.. I just looked really quick at a few anolog capture cards.. man some of them are way expensive and complicated looking with wierd connectors that I dont know what they are.
what are the major advantages of using a capture card than a recording software eg: full paid version of bandicam?
Fraps doesn't compress the captured video like Capture Cards do, hence why it takes up 100GB of space over 1 hour of recording. Also Fraps can't record console.
This is pretty much a 'mainstream' recording device that's really designed for mid-spec PCs and consoles. A high end desktop (yours seem like one), the CPU should handle the recording just fine without limitations and better quality.
@LinusTechTips Does this card also help with the renderinga video in a program like sony vegas pro, pinnacle studio, etc. ...? (by that i mean that this card is not only used to record and
live stream)
You often unbox stuff I want, but this might be something I really will get. Even with the heavy tag for what it is. Make a video of you using it! I still almost feel like I could buy a nice CPU for $200 and get better performance in Fraps that way. Thanks
Sebastian,I know that´s not for this channel, but when you gonna put another video on NCIX channel about PC Vesta NFX1 AMD FX-8320 Piledriver Gaming System.Thanx
so.. you hook it up to your PC, then you have to relay your graphic card through the capture card and then from capture card to the monitor?
Nice couch! What brand is the couch? The cupholder is pretty cool to see!
Since it only has an HDMI out (despite the adapter) is the refresh rater limited to 60Hz / 120Hz, or does it support a higher refresh rate than that?
Linus I would like to know if it is possible to use this card with my setup. Here is how it goes
560 ti > Asus 120hz monitor
8800gts > 2x 60hz monitors
I play games on the 120hz obviously. The two extra monitors is for random crap.
The video does seem more fluent, comparing to older videos :)
Linus I am looking at getting one of these cards for live streaming on my channel. But the question is can I hook up a HD Camcorder straight up to this card. Great videos as always keep up the great work bud.
Could you use this to stream over your home network (with a high-speed router) to another screen somewhere in your house and control your computer from a mouse and keyboard in that room? Or would that be impossible?
We dont use that here in Denmark, I have a PVR for that, I´m just thinking how cool it would be to have TV and Facebook and everything on one screen at once. I have a 50" 5-series Samsung which is perfect for this setup
i wonder how that compares to the hauppauge hd pvr for recording from the consoles.
I feel like this is a good mix of "professional" style and linus style
you said... better than black magic intensity pro! Why do you say that, i has more capabilities in case of selection of Codec (Dnxhd, apple prores etc) than only in h.264 which is a problem for NLE software
Just so you guys know -- If you record at MAX quality with this card at 1080P, 30FPS, you're not going to get the same quality as you get when recording with either playclaw or fraps. You'll end up with much smaller files however, but the quality at 1080P is noticeably inferior to fraps or playclaw.
At least for the downloaded files. I think they'd have to do a full transition to HTML5 before we could play 60 FPS on the web.
HEY LINUS the dvi cable is realy small how do they expect us to hook that up from are gaming rigs to are monitor
where did the piledriver ncix gaming pc video disappear linus ?
i really do feel sorry for you. mine buffers in under a minute, and pretty soon im getting google fiber 1gb up and down, here in KC missouri
how would you connect it on your Xbox if it only has one HDMI in the back and still needs to connect to the monitor/tv at the same time???
K one question... I do not lose frames but colors, right?
thats right
ah... ty, sir!
Pleasure man :)
If you have no video card how do you watch the video?
There is no need to play the video file.
What program are you using to convert?
How much RAM do you have?
The 660, I have a 660 ti power edition from msi right now but if I had to pick between the 2, the 660. :D
Does that mean if you capture at 30 or 60 FPS with a DVI monitor at 120Hz, do you still only see the 60 FPS in the game your playing? or is it 120 in game and 60 or 30 captured?
Yeah it will, Linus even said it will
It's actually a converter from DVI to HDMI.
Please please please please please please please please fix the audio linus. This is arguably more important than vid quality because most of your vids are you talking.
So, can I record to my hard drive instead of streaming? And from what i take is that i plug my xbox or computer I'm recording on into the card, then use the output for my monitor?
just wondering how much that card will effect ur cpu say if u record with xsplit and everything is run off ur computer, how much fps will u gain (give or take) when u use that card
Hey Linus. I have the Avermedia Capture card and when I record videos the quality is great. But the output from the device to my monitor is bad. It makes small characters show up blurry almost like doubles. I was wondering if this is common or if i should get it replaced. Any suggestions?
I want to use this card when I build my rig.
Here are a few questions I personally have.
1. I plan on gaming at 5760x1080 at 144hz I plan on mirroring the image of the main(center) monitor. If I do this, Will I be capped at 60hz?
There was a second question, but it somehow got cut as I hit submit. The second question was is there a capture card that will handle resolutions above 1080p that don't put too much strain on cpu? I can't find anything online so just wanted to ask around
Redneckgamer185 It's limited to 1080p/30 recording.
Thanks for the response. Although I've recently figured out I will be using the 720p/60 option because of the new updates to Twitch recently
Tell me how ia am going to capture aound the is going ty my USB headset with this, well done
I don't get why you're complaining about a product that is obviously not marketed to you. I have one of these, and they're great for recording video. But that's it. The comparison to a GPU is sort of odd, because that's not what this is.
I've updated everything. The video quality is even low without using any software at all as well. I went ahead and contacted customer support
You can plug in the Xbox or DvD player to record, right?
Why would I use YUV for a PC game? And why would Compressing help if compression takes CPU power?
finally he did it i asked him to do this like a month ago
So is there anything that can record 1080 p at 60 fps and also get triple screen footage?(if that is even possible) furthermore what fps is utube in??
How much does it cost
why aren't you using the old setup in NCIX ?
@LinusTechTips can this be used on a 3 screen setup??
What's the difference between hdmi in and out? (Or any in/out interface)
Well, I'm suggesting that an SSD is not going to make a difference. Because if you record video files, they're going to be really fucking big, if you do it with fraps and stuff. 1 terabyte drives are seen as "starter" models nowadays, a single video file from fraps (at 30 fps 1080P) can easily consume 10 gigabytes for less than 10 minutes. So if you're looking to use FRAPS, get at least a 1TB HDD. The live gamer HD however can record an hour of 1080P footage at less than 10 gigs.
I wasn't insulted. Just not a watcher of Pewdiepie's game streaming videos.
what is this? is it a thing that captures your gameplay if people wanna put on gameplay videos on youtube or what is this thing?
your saying it works with xsplit well but does it work well with obs
the audio is completely fine for me buddy
I've uploaded 12GB files to RUclips. What size did you try to upload that it was too big?
You convert to FLV? This is the part where I back away slowly.
please do not get an 8800 they are just really old... u can't use two cards from different series to sort of work together. you can use let's say a 560Ti and a 540 or something for the other monitors, ou are still better off connecting all the monitors to the "fast" 560Ti, if it has the connections
I wouldn't be able to capture from my 1080p 120hz monitor? I'd have to use 60hz instead?
Perhaps one could us this capture card to hook up a 1080p camcorder and use it as a beast webcam?
Tell me how i am going to record sound going to my USB headset
Hey i have a Thermaltake WATER2.0 Performer and an Asrock 990fx motherboard now will this fit with the water cooler?
