  • As an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Yasmin Mulji often treats women in her clinic room who do not speak English. A multi-linguist herself, Yasmin draws on her experience supporting women throughout their pregnancies as she shares her tips for having the necessary conversation about the importance of learning a native language in order to better access healthcare, education and other support services. Yasmin is a specialist registrar in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, a Clinical Fellow in fertility & reproductive medicine, and a Trustee of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance.
She adopts a holistic approach to her clinical practice, recognising that physical and mental wellbeing are interconnected. Yasmin’s clinical medicine experience, her academic specialism in Tropical Medicine & International Health, and her lived experience of the specific vulnerabilities that women who have emigrated face all fuel her passion to advocate for women’s physical and mental wellbeing.
Yasmin is particularly committed to resolving healthcare inequalities and is keen to implement and scale interventions that drive improved healthcare outcomes for all women including those from ethnic minority and low socioeconomic status backgrounds. She recognises the pivotal role that breaking the language barrier can play in improving immediate clinical outcomes for women as well as enhancing women and their respective communities’ long-term socio-economic prospects. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

"We now need to take (healthcare) one step further by transforming patient-centered care into person-centered care." I loved this talk. So relevant!

Amazing talk! With the current development of Interactive technology and speech analysis, person-centered care can be a reality, creating an environment where linguistic differences are no longer an issue.
I hope this technology can be utilised within this industry, resulting in better care and understanding of patients from differing ethnicities.

Immigrants coming from other countries know that they have to learn the native language to thrive and there is already a lot of pressure and resources for them to do so . However some people have an easier time learning languages then others due to aptitude and family and work obligations that they are juggling. It often takes i many years to assimilate and is not a viable short-term solution in a medical emergency . Perhaps one thing that could help in the meantime is providing computer programs that convert they're native tongue into the mainstream language so that they can engage in a two-way conversation .

What if there a multiple native languages in a country? What if the most native languages are not the most dominant language?

@@cbbcbb6803 I would think that the computer converter programs could be used on a case-by-case basis .

Staff must be able to speak sufficient English too and speak 😢clearly enough to enable service users to feel able to talk normally and openly using their own words and slang to express what it is they are struggling with. Because in mental health it is already difficult enough to express what we are going through without also having the added desperation to get a professional to help us if the professional we speak to doesn’t seem to speak or understand our English well we will work harder to simplify what we are saying so that the professionals will diagnose properly and understand what our difficulties are.. but this has the opposite effect because your not able to explain and express full and safely because you don’t feel understood.
