- Here is the Spoon Tomato, Solanum pimpinellifolium, new for 2019. Some say it's the worlds smallest tomato! This Indeterminate, regular leaf tomato plant produces current sized, red, tomatoes and is a heavy producing variety that originates from central and south America. We found this variety to self seed every year from seed. We don't recommend growing this tomato in your garden with other vegetables due to the enormous size they can get. Very hardy and resistant to most blights. The fruits do vary in size an shape and can reach 3/8" and 8 to a bract. Great for snacking or making sauces and salads, open pollinated 45 days. The tomato is the edible, red fruit of Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant, which belongs to the nightshade family, Solanaceae. The species originated in Central and South America. The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato originates.
Numerous varieties of tomato are widely grown in temperate climates across the world, with greenhouses allowing its production throughout the year and in cooler areas. The plants typically grow to 1-3 meters (3-10 ft) in height and have a weak stem that often sprawls over the ground and vines over other plants. It is a perennial in its native habitat, and grown as an annual in temperate climates. An average common tomato weighs approximately 100 grams (4 oz). Its use as a food originated in Mexico, and spread throughout the world following the Spanish colonization of the Americas. Tomato is consumed in diverse ways, including raw, as an ingredient in many dishes, sauces, salads, and drinks.

Your channel is so underrated😊 i don't know why.. You deserve lot more than this.. Thank you for making all these videos for us❤
Looking forward to growing these. The currant tomato I usually just picked and immediately ate them. They grow like they are trying to prove something. :0)
Good luck!
From what I researched...spoon tomato and currant tomato are both the same species
Solanum pimpinellifolium
My spoon tomato is a lot smaller than those. Those are more a current tomato. Still pretty though.
Such very little Tomato's ❤️ Super interesting review ❤️
thanks for watching : )
I never had any luck growing the Everglades tomatoes from Seeds.
This isn't everglades tomato?
Interesting information about plants 💞💞 great upload as always 💯💯💯
They look bigger than advertised in baker creek website. They are suppose to be able to fit multiple ones on a spoon
Yes these are bigger than my spoon tomatoes. I got mine from bakers creek and i was able to fit 15 spoon tomatoes on a tablespoon. These seem too big to be a spoon tomato. Those are the size of a currant. Maybe he mixed up his seeds.
I am really looking forward to growing these.
yup there a fun one! try the sweet pea tho thats crazy!
Golden current tomatoI need to look into growing Golden current tomato
Do the evrglades ones have more taste of the smell of tomato's growing in a greenhouse?
i wouldnt say smell but maybe a bit more of a rich flavor due to the plants not getting blite. but to be honest i really dont remember!
@@HeirloomReviews Fair enough, thanks for trying to answer!, i love that smell of tomatos growing, and the taste of that odour profile, i'm not usually keen on tomatos raw AT ALL, but my fiance's friend grew what i believe was everglades tomatos, and that fresh pop of flavour, and no nasty sliminiess, mmmmmm
Hey! i'm student from an university here in Perú and really you teached me about that little tree, i'm making my tesis from my university and just it's exactly this what i'm looking for, would you help me? exactly my tesis it's about the
"Effect of chromium adsorption on the photosynthetic activity of Solanum peruvianum"
if you know something about that, i really will apretiate so much for your help :')
Is this the same thing as the sweet pea currant tomato? If not, is the yellow currant tomato smaller than the sweet pea?
Are all four, spoon tomato, everglade, sweet pea and yellow currant, Solanum pimpinellifolium?
Also, how does the edible Galapagos Island tomato plant (S. cheesmaniae) compare to S. pimpinellifolium? I know S. cheesmaniae fruit are bigger and taste differently, but do the plants grow as vigorously as S. pimpinellifolium?
yes all 4 are Solanum pimpinellifolium which all originate from Peru and Ecuador. the Galapagos tomato Solanum chessmanii come in a major and minor form the one i think your referring to is the major form which is the one available in most seed stores. L. cheesmaniae var. minor is the minor form which is mot available in most seed stores. yes they can grow as vigorously as S. pimpinellifolium but dont grow them together, they hybridize very easy
@@HeirloomReviews
Thanks!
I'll be starting S. chessmanii (not sure which cultivar), S. pimpinellifolium (sweet pea and everglade), S. sisymbriifolium and Solanum x arkwrightii in a few weeks.
So glad I found your channel! I like to familiarize myself with things I grow beforehand. No one covers the wide variety you do and, even more importantly, no one goes into detail like you do. Comparing and contrasting similar species on size, vigor, taste, pests and disease resistance etc.
Really appreciate your prolific knowledge!
@@nisnber5760 I think theres Solanum galapagense, and Solanum cheesmaniae
one is closer to shore I believe the others more inland. The problem is that S. pimpinellifolium is invasive on the Galapagos islands and cross freely with them and cause hybrids and confusion.
@@nisnber5760 I'm trying I am trying S.sisymbriifolium and S. Caripense which I didn't care for the skin last time I tried it but I have seeds left for it. S. Peruvianum which I'm not sure is edible. Tomato White Currant, Tess's Land race currant, Hartman's yellow gooseberry and S.cheesemaniae. There's also some S. Nigrum Otricoli orange berry seeds I have from two years ago but they are nasty and I think they might spread if I plant them... I also have S. retroflexum which I am looking forward to planting. I have an ornamental plant called Pumpkin On A Stick, pretty sure it isn't an eggplant ? And another species called Tubocapsicum anomalum don't think its edible. I might get the cafe blue tomato and everglades not sure yet.
@@bakachiki491
I'm still very new to wild/currant Tomatos. I've only grown cherry tomatoes and full size tomatoes in the past.
I'm trying to figure out which of so called "deadly" nightshades, Solanum x arkwrightii, S. retroflexum and S. nigrum etc. is the best tasting and highest yielding.
Too Good
First time growing. Any staking advice?
willow branches 10 feet long strip the skin off first
@@HeirloomReviews thank you! Willow branches, how interesting. Maybe would make a cool how-to for these tomatoes in particular? I would definitely be interested.
@@taraoldham1263 i will put something together for you
Is it good in salad?
yes
