I think it was last winter here on Maui about a mile off the coast of Olawalu a 10' white shark attacked a kayak. The kayak was manned by a local wildlife photog and his 15 year old son. They were attempting to photograph a newly born humpback calf. The shark attacked the kayak knocking them both into the water. They attempted to paddle it back to shore but it was too badly damaged...and as they swam back to shore they could hear the shark continuing to ravage the kayak. Can you imagine what that swim would have been like??

sounds like the shark really didnt like them / the kayak being near the whale calf because it was probably trying to predate the whale calf. Sharks feed on whale carceses out in the ocean and are very territorial and aggressive around these dead whales, for example the Discovery channel put a human in a box near a dead whale and the shark smashed the box to pieces but left the human alone when we swam for his life. Shark Bytes youtube channel covers this.

Two months ago I went solo sailing and was ten miles east of Kaneohe Bay. I was in several thousand feet and at the helm about to change directions and something to my left in the water caught my eye. I looked and saw a massive snout with eyes on either side, each eye was easily five feet apart. The top of the creature was dark black and inches before hitting the hull it immediately did a 180 and took off back down under the water, causing a huge commotion and drenching me in the process. As it turned I caught a glimpse of its belly and it was snow white. I am 99% certain this was a massive great white that mistook my sailboat for a prey item. The entire encounter lasted three seconds.

That’s pretty crazy, White sharks travel vast distances every day. I totally think that in your case and this case, a white shark is to blame. They come to warmer waters to breed and when they are pregnant they become more aggressive

I was on Maui when this happened and it took a while for the story to trickle out. 50 yards from shore.. the shark was aggressive to the husband, circled, and left, he went looking for his wife but couldn’t find her, the shark came back and he went in and made the report. Search and rescue was on scene fast with jet skis and boats and found nothing. But people on the beach reported seeing a large shark feeding off shore.

I live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu, and before shark fishing was banned I used to help tag the Tiger Sharks from shore. The biggest one I ever caught was a pregnant female who was 13’5 and around 1400lbs. I caught them this size VERY regularly. I think they are more active around the harbors because they fillet the carcasses of the marlin and ahi and then throw them in the harbors and waters surrounding the shorelines. They are absolutely beautiful and I am a firm believer they don’t even like coming close to shore based on what they would do when they would fight on the line ❤

From my understanding you now need a permit to harvest sharks or even bring them out of the water. I wonder how that’ll effect the ocean ecosystem in the long term concerning shark attacks, turtle populations, etc.

I watch a RUclips channel called Sharks Happen. I would bet this was either a Tiger or a Great White. Tigers can get very big, like 20' big. Tiger sharks often take a chunk or two and move on, often the victim passes due to blood loss. Big Great White attacks often leave only wet suits, scuba gear, clothing as evidence. I believe this was most likely a Great White.

Sounds like a bull shark. 12 feet would be pretty much the maximum length of a bull shark but they are not only tenacious, aggressive and persistent but they tend to drag large prey, such as people, to deeper water. That being said without a positive identification it could have been a number of sharks. Any one of the big three can kill a person with one powerful bite. Even at 12 foot. Hell it could have been an oceanic white tip.

As it swam up like a bullet i jabbed my spear at its nose and eye keeping it from bitting me it moved and made a crazy turn by this time i had my gun loaded it charge me on more time hmmm but this time i had no choice but to shoot it. I spinned it right behind its gills :( i tried to swim it to shore but my 700lb mono line snap off the water turn black as the shark swam in a circle with my five foot shaft stuck in its side. The scariest thing was to hear its teeth bitting as it mouth opened and closed. Later on shore i realize that it was my first and only time ever encountered a great white. Recently a white was recorded in the same area. Sad for the lose of life. God bless.....

Whites a definite possibility but also this is prime tiger season in the islands. And if you go through attack records on humans they do tend to cause massive injuries leading to quick deaths and total consumption similar to GW attacks, especially on divers.
A cool aside, new research has shown tigers in Hawaii and the indo-pacific are genetically distinct from Atlantic populations and from experience catching them the Island-Indo-Pac fish behave entirely different on line compared to Atlantic Ocean specimens. Even with fish of compared length, weight and sex in similar water temps etc the Atlantic fish are much more likely to behave more sluggish, lazy, swim to shore more and make fewer and much shorter runs when caught. Meanwhile Pacific tigers tend to behave like a freight train when hooked making long runs and putting up impressive fights on par with large great hammerhead. This difference in fight behavior is pretty well known in the Australian, Carolina, Florida, Hawaii and South African land fishing community.

If that were truly the case then people would be dropping like flies every day to sharks and no one would go in the water or beaches. Sharks aren’t human killing machines. Though I will say I don’t like going into the water without my speargun or lobster net just in case a shark gets a little too close. Sharks aren’t like the Australian crocodiles. Though I do agree if a big shark is hungry, get out. I personally get out even if I see a threading shark like a bull tiger or white. I’ve never seen a tiger or white thanfuklly. But there are people who have no problem Spearfishing even when sharks are present. That is something I don’t do. Floridian here.

That white shark was in much, much deeper water than where the snorkeling was occurring on Maui.
All great white sightings have been very far out at sea and never near shore.
Finally, a turtle has a hard shell, not soft flesh…I’ve seen white shark attacks within meters…my friends have been both bitten and killed by both whites and tigers.
A tiger most certainly could have killed a snorkeler and taken the body away to where it could not have been recovered.
Just search the story about a tourist surfer, who drowned at Himalayas and body was spotted the next day by helicopters…was being circled by tigers and then vanished minutes later.

Although your not likely to be attacked especially in a healthy ecosystem you have to accept the risk anytime you enter an apex predators domain that you could potentially be on the menu or receive a investigatory bite that could be fatal. On another note and although it hasn’t been documented yet we can assume the white sharks mating process is similar to that of other large sharks in which case can you imagine the cahones you’d need to as a male white shark to try to mount a huge female like deep blue who could have 6 feet or more on you and the added weight it brings? That’s gotta be a bold shark
