i'm a prairie guy with a big, big fear of the ocean. But the way y'all describe 'things get weird' when a storm hits the sea does remind me of like... 'things get weird' if you get lost in the woods. adrenaline, trauma, fear and the body's survival instincts do really really weird things to the perceptions of reality and memory. I have no doubt the teen remembers a sea monster attacking his friends, but I think that there are about 30 million things in the water during a storm that could be a sea monster. Including a sea monster honestly, large bodies of water freak me out.

I remember reading about this account in a few different places. My favorite was from Monsters and Marine Mysteries by Max Hawthorne. From what ive gathered from both accounts is that the boys were knocked overboard and repeatedly attacked by something that was hissing, hence why the survivor thought it was a sea serpent. I like Maxs idea of what it was but when you mentioned crocodile, they hiss right?

Apparently, in the story, the creature raises up like a telephone pole and came down on one of the kids. They described it as a "sea turtle with an elongated head with needle-like teeth", and apparently it hissed several times. Even though it was impossible for plesiosaurs to raise their head, it was the first thing to come to mind.
Even though I think a lot of sea serpent accounts could be mistaken identity, especially when it comes to oarfish and sea lions, the ocean is unfathomably vast. You got to keep in mind, back then in the 1700s, 1800s, etc. the ocean was a lot quieter. Nowadays, all the oceanic "roads" we tend to travel on, on a daily basis, all the human activity, it could've sent some things deeper. As fun as it is to believe, and as grounded as it is to say "mistaken identity", folklore, etc. we'll just never 100% know what else we currently, or once shared the planet with.

Alot of times whales will mate multiple partners and the partner that is waiting its turn will stick it's goant erection above the water surface. A whale exhaling via its blowhole could be mistaken as hissing. Horny erect whales turned upside down could certainly accidentally capsize a boat.

I would theorize the actual reason for deep sea creatures, coming to the surface during storms, would be the water temperatures near the surface, being cooled from the turbulent waters moving the warm water down and the cold water up. This would be equal to similar temperatures in the depths, where these specific creatures live allowing for them too be more opportunistic in terms of coming too the surface in search of food.

That's actually, very deeply and well thought, especially if it's at night because once you go down far enough it's just Black, and if it's Bad weather and night time, why wouldn't some deep sea animals come up closer to the surface, idk how many fish are in the deep oceans where the sun don't reach but I'd assume, could be wrong, that theirs more to hunt in the part of the ocean that sunlight does come through, where those deep sea fish don't come up to, that is unless it's night time, I don't know what land animals to compare this to but I'm sure theirs some, I'm a Midwest guy never seen the ocean, I've seen videos of the ocean at night and it's the Blackest I think you could get here on earth besides a deep deep cave, but theirs nothing but bats their, who knows what's down in that alien world, that thought makes the ocean much much freakier then I already thought it was with the fish we do know about

The issue with large creatures that live at super low depths is they typically don't fair well when brought to the surface due to the decreased pressure on their bodies. Fish and other animals that live at those depths are specifically adapted to that increased pressure and bringing them to the surface can be catastrophic for their organs.

    • @mattsweet2467

How big was the boat ? There are sharks and barracuda in that area . What time of day did they start back ? Dust would lower visibility and could cause a couple shiny fish look like one large unknown creature .

It was described as a 7ft "air force raft". So, a very small boat for 5 people.

It’s the pan handle. It’s tough to discount McCleary. 4 drowning with no outside interference is much to believe. I believe they saw a monster. Somehow a Plesiosaur that was also sighted in deep water two years later by two respected officers. Though ridiculed they swore it was a living Plesiosaur

Even trained divers have accidents . Ive also been in situations, where Something crazy has happened. When we got away and long back we realised we were just in fight or flight mode.,and it was something normal. But then if they were hit by a fish from the boat. Theirs plenty of videos showing fish jumping to avoid the boat ,some jump in the boat. Hes also right about the ore fish is what chinese dragons look like.

Also, in 1960 the U.S conducted the world's first circumnavigation without being detected by anyone. Besides, one Vietnamese fisherman on his boat saw a periscope reach out of the ocean and look right at him. The dude probably told everyone he saw a sea monster or someshit, seeing as he had never seen or heard of a submarine before. I can only imagine what was going through his mind. I'd think a it was a Tripod from war of the world's coming out of tbe water lmao. Also there's a picture of the fisherman in his boat that the submarine took 😂
