How to Make a Reggae Beat in Logic Pro X | One Drop Reggae Beat Production | Producing in Colour

- Опубликовано: 4 ноя 2024
- In this video tutorial, I'll show you how to produce a classic one drop reggae beat using Logic Pro. One drop is a popular reggae rhythm that features a heavy emphasis on the third beat of each bar, giving it a distinctive and relaxed feel.
First, we'll start by selecting a drum kit that's appropriate for reggae music. We'll choose a kit that has a deep, punchy kick drum and a bright, snappy snare drum. Next, we'll set the tempo to around 80-90 BPM, which is typical for one drop reggae.
Now, we'll program the drum pattern. The kick drum will play on the first beat of each bar, while the snare drum will play on the third beat. We'll also add in some hi-hat and cymbal patterns to fill out the rhythm and give it some energy.
Once the drum pattern is set, we'll move on to the bassline. In reggae music, the bassline is an essential part of the rhythm section, providing a solid foundation for the groove. We'll use a simple, repeating bassline that follows the root notes of the chords in the song.
Now, we'll add in some skanking guitar chords. These are typically played on the offbeat, and help to create the characteristic "choppy" rhythm of reggae music. We'll use a clean guitar sound, and play the chords in a staccato style.
To finish off the beat, we'll add in some percussion instruments, such as shakers, congas, or bongos. These can be used to add some variety and interest to the rhythm, and help to fill out the sound of the track.
Finally, we'll mix and master the track to make sure that everything sounds balanced and polished. We'll use EQ and compression to shape the sound of each instrument, and add some reverb and delay to create a sense of space and depth.
By the end of this tutorial, you'll have a solid understanding of how to produce a one drop reggae beat in Logic Pro, and be able to create your own tracks in this style. So, grab your instrument, fire up Logic Pro, and let's get started!

Respect my brother. Reggae has been a huge part of my life since childhood so the history and culture has very much shaped the musician I am today. Big up for the very positive feedback sir. 🙏🏾
There's a large amount of 'real' reggae made by UK based bands and producers: Aswad, Misty in Roots, Alpha & Omega, Dennis Bovell & Matumbi, Steel Pulse, Iration Steppas, Mad Professor, Jah Shakka, Aba Shanti I & Blood Shanti, Adrian Sherwood. etc. etc.
As a lover of reggae and now venturing into reggae production I salute you!!

DID YOU MEMORIZE ALL OF THOSE INSTRUMENT AND IT SOUNDS?
THIS ONE IS PRETTY AWESOME!
Thank you so much for your kind comment sir. No I don’t memorise the elements as you have asked. I’ve been a musician for most of my life so I pretty much pick up a guitar 🎸 or keyboard 🎹 and play. 🙏🏾
I have a similar home setup, on a budget. I have an extensive background in the DJ and sound system world but fairly new to production, using Logic Pro and the MPC x Roland VR as a controller hooked up to a MTK signature 12 with a few outboard FX units. I have no guitar as I'm useless with strings. Do you offer any one to one virtual tutorials / refreshers? Not seen many specific to the reggae genre. Link up, bless
Boom 💥 It’s great to communicate with someone who appreciates and values the combination of analogue and digital production capabilities. As a DJ and sound system veteran you know what it takes to make things sounding right for the people to get into. Amazing! 🔥
It would be a pleasure to do a Zoom meeting with you to discuss where you currently are on your music production journey and find out where you want to get to. I generally do a free 30 minute Zoom call with a potential client then we can set things up from there. I have a client finishing up by the end of this month so a space on my programme will become available. message me either on Instagram or email me tuition@musictechtraining.com. I’m looking forward to meeting you virtually.
Bless 🙏🏾

First rate tutorial, thank you !
Great! Thanks for your feedback Steve. Most appreciated. Cheers😀
@@MTTC 🤘🤩🏆 man you are ridiculously genius 👏
This video is great, so helpful. Just wondering if there are any reggae fill tutorials…been struggling to create the fills as logic doesn’t have any. Thanks!
Thanks so much for your great feedback. Now reggae fills are some of the sweetest fills in music in my opinion. There aren’t any tutorials I know of but I might just put something together based on what you have said. I’m due to make another reggae production video so maybe I’ll add the fills element in as well. If I do I’ll be sure to give you a shout out.
In the meantime I’ll suggest you take time and listen to the fills at the beginning of some of the classics and then try to copy what you hear. That’s the best way to create your own fills. Thanks once again for the comment 🙏🏾
Great advice..thank you 😊😊
Pls you need to do some more of this Tutorial
Yes absolutely Kamoy. I’ve got one cooking right now. Dropping soon 👍🏾
Thanks for this amazing tutorial. So many great elements in your arrangement. I've been trying to find a kit for those fills, and this is the first time someone shows one. I can't actually find the Seventies kit though, my kit list seems to look completely different to your's. Could you point me in the right direction if you have a few mins?
Thanks
Thanks a lot for the great feedback. I’m really happy the video has helped you in production journey.
I’ll be delighted to share some guidance on how to get to the Seventies Kit if you hit me up on Instagram @ musictechtraining. It’s a lot easier to share a screenshots there. Cheers 😀
How did you adjust the drum fill ? That’s my problem I can’t make or custom that drum fills
One of the best things about Logic Pro Drummer is the ease with which you can customise Drummer fills. Be sure to check out my Drummer videos where I explain it all.

@@MTTC I have watched them but I can’t find the fill setting as in this video
😞
hi - i use cubase and garage band - what's a good place to get midi files or roots style samples
The very best place for any kind of samples these days is from splice . com
Whatever genre or instrument you need that would be my first choice. As for MIDI files I could not tell as I create my own but I’m sure a bit of Google search should give you some results. Cheers 😀
have you got a video for reccomended vst instruments to cover all basses
To be honest I don’t but I will look at possibly doing a video covering that topic. Cheers 😀
What's the equipment you're using
Thanks a lot for the question Vincent. It is however difficult to answer as I am from an analogue background but I fully embrace the digital approach. If you were to be a bit more specific then I can give you a straightforward answer. So are you referring to my instruments or my outboard or my DAW gear, mics etc? Let me know. 🙏🏾
Everyone's comment below, now above that is praiseworthy, is saying what I would have stated.
Thank you very much. I appreciate your positive feedback. 😀
Duce as a learner of reggae music it feel ,learned because it was too quick and in note format .
Thanks for commenting. I appreciate the video might be a bit too condensed for a beginner. I very much try to keep the length of my videos down to below 20 minutes as most viewers do not have the attention span. I’d recommend you rewatch the video and pause it to try out the ideas I’ve suggested. Cheers 😀
Duce, this is fantastic - I’m blown away. Your horn arrangement really hits the spot (as does it all). Do you have experience doing that or was it just experimentation? - either way it’s quality. What is great about your work is you capture the feel and swing between the instruments; the space and interplay between sounds. I hear a lot of stuff produced on a DAW and it sounds like DAW music. Yours captures the real band/live feel which so many people miss.
You are very kind for leaving such an awesome comment. Thank you so much. In answer to your question I have no formal training as a horn arranger but having grown up in church listening to vocal trios, quartets and choirs my ears became tuned to harmony from and early age. This has really helped me with writing vocal and other harmonies. Once again I really do appreciated your lovely feedback. Cheers. 😀
@@MTTC Thanks for the reply. Your ability to harmonise not only sounds great but also maintains space which is always better on the ear. Great stuff.
Can I do a one on one with you on how to make a reggae redim
