1 Drop your Reggae listening recommendations here 🥁🙏🏼
Thanks everyone!
For one drop, Carlton Barrett; for rockers, Sly Dumbar; for steppers, Style Scott from the Roots Radics.
@@musamusashi that's the trinity right there :)
@@citizenbxtr883 true. Alongside the 3 bass players long associated with the above 3, Familyman Barret, Robbie Shakespeare and Flabba Holt, they make the top 3 Jamaican drums and bass ever.
@@musamusashi couldn’t agree more with this Top 3 of JA Drum & Bass combos! Also need to throw in the #4 being Carlton “Santa” Davis on drums with Phillip “Fully” Fullwood on bass both from the band Soul Syndicate

Ya gotta give Stewart Copeland some love. While everyone thought they were listening to pop, Copeland, and co where playing Reggae
Very true 🙏🏼
Reggae influenced Rock, that is.
Reggae is only part of Stewart Copeland’s feel…also Middle Eastern ‘Baladi’ in there
So true!
I am half Jamaican, was raised on this music and all I can say is you did a damn good job explaining this.
Thank you very much 🙏🏼😊
I'm a guitar player learning drums, and this video is very helpful. Clear, concise, and well structured.
You‘re welcome Carlos 🙌🏼
I have a pair of those Zildjian 13" New Beat hi-hats also, perfect for this kind of music...so clear and crisp. Snare sounds perfect to my ears. Fun lesson, thank you.
Thank Sean!
I now play 13" New Beat hats. So cool!
14” new beats got em with my very 1st kit still sound great however I have my bottom hat on top
I bet you have the Stewart Copeland sound when ot comes to high hats, as he prefers the 13 inch sizes as well :).
@@CharlesTPrimm Those are my go-to hi-hats. they sound prerecorded and already mixed!
Finally a tutorial that actually teaches how to play the reggae drum styles
Steve "Grizzly" Nisbett of Steel Pulse is by far my favorite reggae drummer. Listen to "Your House" for a great one-drop example. Grizzly was unique in that he pushed the reggae drummer envelope. Listen to Blues Dance Raid. I was absolutely blown away when I heard this for the first time. I still am. RIP Grizzly!
I couldn't agree more, I've seen Steel Pulse several times and I only realised just how good he was seeing them live
Listen to it LIVE or better yet go see them live in concert. They're in California right now
Steel pulse...first listening was mind blowing for me too. Such powerfull vibration man ..
I love the color of your drum kit!
Thanks 🙏🏼
Wow snare pops like crazy sick the sound is like smelling great food
HAHA thank you
❤ love your preparation and presentation here, Chris. Wonderful job!❤
Thank you 🙌🏼
It has really help my son a lot thank you.
Drums is the heartbeat, bassline is the brain.
Thanks Chris for your enthusiasm and energy ..
Thanks John
Achtung bae, Awesome work mate.
I love this channel.
Brilliant
thank you!
snare sounds awesome great video thank you for doing this
Vinnie Colaiuta di play (more or less) a couple reggaes with Sting but I think you meant Stewart Copeland with The Police when reggae rhythms were played often.
Nor Vinnie nor Stewart play Reggae riddims, but most play Reggae inspired grooves. Vinnie does it often, not only with Sting but in many other tracks from Steely Dan to Djiavan to Jeff Beck... in fact, he has some of the best Reggae feels outside of Jamaica, although he plays more complex parts than you would do on authentic Reggae.
I love these reggae grooves! Stewart Copland really brought these grooves to life in rock and roll!
Darn I thought of the Police when listening to this also.
@@gerardi2000 Yeah man! It sounds a lot like some Stewart Copland stuff right? Ahhh so good!😁🥁
Was thinking the same thing. Classic early Police.
But you should think about The Police and Stewart when you hear this, right? No surprise, agreed?

You're an amazing player and teacher. Thank you!

Great sounding kit 👌🏼
Thanks for this lesson.
Greetings from Brasil.
Thank you 🇧🇷🙏🏼
These is mwa❤ can't Stop watching it
This video was an exactly what Ii have been looking for. It totally breaks down the essential in such a way that it had me rocking in no time. You simply layer out my for favorite grooves to learn! Cheers
You‘re welcome and thank you 🙏🏼
I don't care the country of origin or color of the teacher. Only their methods and my results. Thank you for teaching us!
Thank You 🙏🏼
@@ChrisHoffmannTube Music doesn't have a colour. You shouldn't have mentioned it.
@@musician1000 That's why japanese people are very good at playing samba.
@@Luiz.Campos No one is born with rhythm, it's a learned skill. Familiarity through cultural exposure can make this easier, but it's not innate.
14" New Beats are the most recorded set of Hats ever made for a reason. 😎
You have somehow found a wonderful way to mesh Teutonic clarity with the art of cultural isms, wunderbar!!
this means a lot. thank you
Love it man ..
thanks!
Man this is the best reggae tutorial I have seen so far on RUclips thnx pliz keep it up
I love reggae drumming. That, and the bass…ufff 🔥
Manh this is what I've been looking for, how on earth could i not subricrbe to this😊😍thanks man, now waiting for the reggae rolls
I've got a playlist on RUclips called "Collie Reggae". It has a lot of modern reggae mixed with old school, dub, roots, all types and some funk mixed in for fun. Maybe some things in there you've not heard yet. Shrug.
The most crucial element you missed and I'm sort of joking but sort of serious is you weren't letting a fat spliff burn in your mouth as you played 🤪. Ganja is as much a part of reggae as anything...all players, especially roots guys, smoking a spliff while playing isn't just some stoner musicians getting lit, it's religious music and ganja is the sacrament, not a cultural identity or a life style. A sacrament. I would say it's vital to playing good reggae drums.
Great playing as always...love the concert Tom kit...I'm glad to see those kits are having a bit of a come back...I think they sound incredible!! Mad skills man...much love and thanks for making this video. Learned A LOT!!!
Stumbled upon this randomly and really enjoyed it. Gorgeous snare sounds!
Thanks 🙏🏼
I Love the movement
When ever I play raggae: I always loosen the snare some and take off any ring damping on the snare head. And of course practice your rim shots. So important to the sound. Also the ruff is a great rudiment in this style, ending with a rim shot. Great flavor. In the Caribbean ( I lived and played there for about 10 yrs), another part of this style of music is improvised instruments like a car tire rim hit with a metal object. And other such improvised things. Great stuff, wonderful musicians and music.
Soft and simple so precious beat,,mind blowing...keep doing
Great Lesson! Nicely done.
Thank you 🙏🏼 😊
Awesome!!!❤️❤️🥂
Thank you for your thoughts
Thanks for sharing your experience. It will go a very long way to add flavor to my drumming and timing. Jah Jah bless you bro...!!!
You‘re welcome and thank you 🙏🏼
U r my best reggae teacher 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
My pleasure buddy 🙌🏼🥁
Cool STAFF man 🤙🏼, kindly DO one video on HOW to fit FILL in STEPPER groove🥁😁.
Amazing ❤
trust me bruv! Europeans know reggae big time! I give credit to were its due! more fire
Reggae, R dub, old Rock Steady got me through Covid.
This is an exceptional lesson delivery. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you 🙏🏼 You‘re welcome 🙌🏼🥁
Don't forget Sly Dunbar in your reggae homework. Also work with putting ghost notes in there on the snare. You will know where to put them and what songs to put them in once the groove locks you in. Some songs just dictate a few extra snare hits, I can't explain it.
Love the color if this Pearl President drumkit. Reaggae is fun to play on drums 😁
Great video. Thank you.
Amazing video, thank you and congratulations for you work!
Excellent vid. Listen to tons of dub and reggae but seeing you strip them patterns down to the fundamentals really great help for me to work on my technique.
Awesome. Thanks Steve 🙌🏼
Fine lesson ..thanx
Beautifully explained 👌👍
AWESOME job on playing them reggae jams....I LIKE!!!
Excelente a sua aula !!!
Vídeo Top !
Obrigado!!
Amazing Instructor !
Thank you 🙏🏼
d grooves kinda on point.. but u nailed it on head in beginning.. Reggae is totally a feel.. n if da feel is absent, it would never sound legit..
Thanks Chris
You‘re welcome
those orange sneakers with the blue drum kit! perfect.
Way cool! Great, easy to follow instruction, thanks! I also noticed the sound of the equipment is very helpful too. Looks like 13" HH, no res heads, tight tuning on stock heads. Sounds great
Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare - The ultimate riddim section.
No, contrary to popular belief, the Barrot brothers were, in my opinion just as good if not better, but too many to mention.
Need to shout out Leroy Wallace, the inventor of the Rockers beat and house drummer for Studio One. Played on over 500 tracks, numerous of them absolute classics. Played with Burning Spear, Gregory Isaacs, Max Romeo, Jacob Miller, Lee Perry, The Skatalites, Bunny Wailer, The Abbyssinians, The Gladiators,
One drop beatifully explained and played! Awesome💯
Thank You 🙏🏼 🙌🏼
Hi chris
Very nice lesson thanks
What is the title of the song please ? I would like to play on it but Shazam can not find it
@@abitboljacques9385 It‘s a drum loop that I created by myself.
Great
Is it possible to share it ?
Or can I buy it ?
Thanks
That’s a great teaching thank you sir
Excellent! Really like that the sheet notation scrolled along very helpful. Like the finish on those drums by the way.
Thank You Thomas 🥁
Amazing... thanks
Great grooves! that Hat sounds absolutely sweet!
Thanks 🙏🏼
Vinnie didn't know Raggae from a Pop-tart and his early recorded "Raggae" grooves were utterly contrived.
Great video Chris!!! Greetings from Buenos Aires

Super super teaching 🖐️

Stewart Copeland: Yes!
YES! You're right. How could I not mention him...
An excellent class. Of course, is not supposed to cover everything about Reggae Drumming but it goes far beyond a simple introduction. Thanks for posting it!
Thank you Mario 🙏🏼🥁
This is great! I've been playing these grooves for years and didn't know what they were called. Any one of them, if you increase playback to 1.25 times normal speed, sounds like stuff I stole from Stewart Copeland (which, of course, he stole from the music he heard growing up). Thanks for helping to fill in the holes of my drum education.
Agree with you on saying it's a feel! Def is
Awesome grooves!

Good grooves, great style and great place to start if you want to practice some simpler beats but with all the feel you can steel.
Fantastic video. Thank you so much! Your drumming is fabulous.

Very cool! Tks
Well done Chris 😀

Hi. A few questions were directed at me let me see what I can do. Some one asked about the name ''One Drop'. I started playing the drums when Reggae just started and almost all my peers were older than myself by at least 5 years. I listened to all of them but it is impossible for me to recall who said what. What was made clear to me is that the name One Drop was 'set in motion' by a musician but not by a drummer. Next, One Drop did not have it's beginnings in Rockers/Reggae (same thing exactly), if you seek you will find. Someone asked me for an interview; I have no idea how that would happen. I am using Chris Hoffman's post to reply and I do not take it lightly, therefore I honour your channel Chris, use whatever information I have given wisely. It took over 20 years of playing with the best Reggae musicians in the world, but also teaching and being questioned by very intelligent students to be able to give decent answers. So many of us say we love Reggae but never take time to understand its make up. I was taught never to learn to read music. That 'Riddim' contines and is not a feather in our hat. Jamaica had Big Bands when I was a boy, I was blessed to play with one before it died out, (I couldn't read a note). Many of (our) students tour the world right now, you may have seen some of them.
Que sonzeira meus amigos! 👏👏👏👏
Those Zildjian Hi hat cymbals sound excellent!
Yes! SOO good 😍
