  • In this video, Kahn makes a reggae riddim in an hour. The next video in this 2 part series will be on mixing the song heard in the video. Note this video is only the tracking portion. Much of the arrangement and mixing will be done in the second part of the series on mixing. Hope you enjoy.
If you're interested in Kahn's Reggae Drum Sample pack, please shoot him an email him at: thekahn@gmail.com
As always, thanks for stopping by!

I watched this video the first time more than a year ago, I've got my reggae drum kit sounding good now thanks to your samples and feel like I'm making steady progress. The thing that impressed me at first and still does is that its like learning from a real person rather than a shouty salesman, you present the music in your own way and the curve balls and unexpected glitches are, as I find, just part of the experience. I was impressed the first time through and this viewing just confirms that impression, you are a big help to all the others who like me want to play that reggae music.
    Thank you

I am so glad I was able to teach you something and that you’re slowly progressing forward in your journey in making “good reggae music” as I call it. There’s so many reggae legends that are passing from this earth and I feel we need to try our best to carry the torch! All the best to you and your family this holiday season.

Nice one man, really good effort for an hour. This just goes to show that you can put together the foundation of a riddim in an hour, an hour for drum fills, variations and the arrangement then it's ready for the vocalist! and horns if you're lucky haha.
Would love to see a 5 part series like this.
    1. Building the foundation
    2. Arrangement and finishing touches
    3. Vocal session (and live horns)
    4. Mixing
    5. DUB.
A big part of the problem for a lot of us is getting to the stage where we can build a riddim like this but we're not sure how to turn all of these ideas into an arrangement that deserves a vocal or other lead part. Then once you do find someone, it's how to write a decent tune to it and record the lead and backing parts in a way that is going to work for the sound.
I wonder if we can get a 'build a riddim in an hour' challenge going? ;)

Reggae bassist looking to sharpen my producer chops and came to the right place! Really dig the bass. I would have left out the higher octave notes. It's mind boggling how cool stuff can sound simply by leaving big ole parking spaces between phrases. We should never be afraid to leave spaces for hummers and limos.

I'm going to say this because it needs to be said. I absolutely appreciate these videos. I didn't really get into Reggae until I brought and listened Bob Marley's Birth of a Legend very early '60 Marley (still my favorite album). What was surprising to me and My Brother In Law was going to a Sunsplash concert at the Tower Theater in Philly and seeing Jamaicans and White college kids (who had some good Herb) supporting this music. Black Americans are few a far between when It comes to Reggae. Philly doesn't even have a Reggae radio station and I've been writing and asking why not?

    Hi DM Kahn,
first of all, thank you so much for an amazing video that youve been posting.
I love ur work flow and ur explanation on details of the song production.
Would you say that those "real instruments that are not VSTs" are necessary?
I know that real instruments could be better in terms of giving natural sound quality and is recommended,
But I just wanted to see if Raggae music can be produced just by using the VSTs (guitar, drums, bass guitar / bass synth like Trillian, synth like konkakt or Omnisphere).
It would be amazing if u could show some production works making raggae / dub related music just using the VSTs!!!!
Thank you so much again, and I subscribed ur channel, cuz it is great.
I hope to hear back from you.

Yes you can definitely make reggae with VSTs but I think real guitar and bass makes a big difference. For keys you can def get away with a VST. Drums are doable for sure but there’s nothing like the real deal to be honest. Cheers

Do you record the guitar with spring reverb and/or delay or record dry and add those during mixing?

Hey..I will love to see your mixing session for both instrumentals and vocals, as an upcoming reggae producer, it is a delight to discover that you been a reggae producer for over 20 years. Lastly, how can I hit you up personally and privately and thanks

Kahn, can Yu do one on chord progressions? Is reggae all a&e? What are some boundaries for reggae chords? I feel like I’m rewriting every reggae track

You did a review of MODO bass a few years back, could you do a video comparing your bass with MODO bass? When i hear your bass i hear frequencies that i can't get with MODO. When i hear a band like stick figure my MODO basses seem like a joke, but maybe i am doing something wrong.
