Just purchased the Stems Pack!! Great work DM Kahn!! So many useful reference points in there. Just being able to hear what your piano track sounds like underneath the guitars was very informative. Lots of stuff to learn from... and I am working on that project I told you about and have been feeling concerned about my ability to get the mixes sounding ideal. This is going to help!
@@DMKahn I just purchased the stems pack in your link, thanks mate for the effort you goto in helping others You got a link to other packs I can buy please mate to help me and in turn helps you out a bit, thanks again
King Tubby was known for using a multi-step bandpass filter knob on his MCI mixer when doing his Dub Mixes, the bandpass filter gave a unique sound to his mixes.
This might be a dumb question but at what point in the fx chain/routing did he put it? I'm assuming it varies some but didn't know if there was a consistent technique
yes the eq was in definite steps , so it jumped from one frequency to the other, and old British board we had, a Calrec had them, i like it on reverb returns and individual instruments , you can fake it on a DAW
Dude! You do an awesome sound! Please keep maintaining this exponent of the reggae music that created one of the most crazy rithyms of the humanity !!! Dub existed dude, this is fucking awesome !
Kahn you are a legend! I grew up with reggae and I'm really into all the old roots stuff. I'm learning to record and mix Reggae through the tracks I record with my bandmates and to find your videos was a blessing. Since I watch your videos I'm learning so much about the sound of the old bands and I wish I could share with you , the appreciation I have for your channel. thank you so much for your effort and please keep on doing it. to see someone sharing his knowledge about the old sound of reggae wich is about to die, just warms my heart and fills me with joy and inspiration. kind regards Joel from Breakfast Mood
I like how you mention the FUN of dubbing. Sometimes when I get caught up in the technical aspects of the mix I forget it's supposed a joyful experience. Bless up
So true. Sometimes when I feel like I’m not having fun, I try to remind myself.. take a break… then get back to it! The truth is we are privileged to have such awesome tech to make dub that the originators didn’t have! So let’s have fun with the tools we do have!
Hi DMK, didn't catch you live but on watching I was totally in awe! I already knew the routing and fx stuff, but your skills and dexterity were awesome to watch. Nice that you mentioned the late and great Lee'Scratch'Perry. Big up DMK 🇬🇧🇯🇲❤️ Happy Birthday Dub Dude
Thank you for this in-depth and well thought out tutorial! You clearly have big passion for what you are doing and sharing. I am an electronic music educator and studying about Live Dub to bring to public school classrooms for them to get hands on experience of performing dub live for one of our units. I'll certainly be using some gems from this video to form my lesson plans!
For anyone wanting to get the Akai Midimix featured at the end of the video, you need to upgrade the pots to taller ones as the stock pots are quite small and are hard to use for dubbing.
What a great tutorial! Never done a dub mix before now. I dusted off an old ska type song recorded on 4 track cassette with my old high school band back in the 80s and "voila" i'm dubbing on my tascam model 12 thanks to all these amazing tips and techniques you shared! Spot on with so many little details that gave great results in one session. Thanks dub master khan!!
Mutes are best done with the relay type mutes like on SSL or even MCI/Sony consoles. They are much faster. For the mute buttons you have you have to do it through MIDI if your board supports it (but it's not live). Running the faders is the old school way which wore out a lot of consoles in the day. Good job bro!!! Bless.
Whoa... much respect to you for putting out this tutorial sir. I am from the Bahamas, just miles away from Jamaica and during the hey-dey of dubs on records, reggae was essentially banned by our government because of the "negative" connection to Rastafarian Culture. So those records released by Joe Gibbs and the Professionals which almost always had a wicked dub version on the 12" release were practically contraband. I am a DJ and producer so to have someone break down how those magical sounds were produced has been a pure blessing. Salute to you sir and thank you for your vibes. I will purchase the stems pack for sure.
Respect man thank you for commenting. I cannot imagine being in your shoes, having to keep your reggae music a secret! It’s my pleasure to share what little knowledge I know with you all. May God bless you brother
I got your Dub Stems Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 just recently. First I struggled a bit with my set up, 'cause I have no experience with DAW and Audio interfaces. But as I figured that out, I have to say: THAT IS A LOT OF FUN!!! I think I also will go for the Roots Makers Stems. Perfect quality for getting into this stuff.
Thank you for this comment. I shared it on a story on Instagram. I really appreciate your positive feedback and I am thankful you had FUN with the stems. God bless you.

Thanks, great video! I have never bought stems from anyone, but I just bought your pack. I'm pretty dedicated to recording my own, but you make a good point about having raw and cooked versions to practice mixing and dubbing with. Been working on my own dub mixer in Ableton with some controllers and external effects, so should be interesting to experiment with...
hello ! huge tutorial !!! are each stems dry from reverb before you send them on the spring for dub mixing ? is there any particular reason why you are not using the Capistan delayfor the feedback loop ? (so much questions I have :) )
Hey yes the stems are dry, no FX. With this particular board, the El Cap doesn’t do well with the feedback loop for whatever reason. It’s not a problem though because it sounds wonderful by just using the knob. Bless
Love the vibe, sound and sharing. For the life of me, I cant get a similar Spring Reverb within Ableton Live that has this sound though. I wonder if someone is using native plugins and which parameters get them close.
A lot of experience mixing. EQ, very light compression, and probably most importantly saturation. It’s a never ending struggle to get the sound in my head!

i add a parallel bus with a guitar amp sim on it, to add dirt, make it sound more like old bounced , filter the tops of most things to darken it too

Happy to do it man, thanks for stopping by
Cracking video thanks. Just need to work out the routings for delays on my desk now😮
