the worst thing that ever happened to Devo was "Whip It" being such a big hit. So many people think they're oddball one-hit wonders, when it fact they're the owners of a ton of downright dirty rockin' punk gems!
They despised being labeled punk the punk movement was all influenced by past artist Devo were forging the future I just recently watched an interview with Mark but he was talking about just this subject that they hated it when they were labeled punk rock.
@@badmonkey2222 yeah people don't know HOW to classify them, ESPECIALLY early Devo. Unfortunately their FIRST ALBUM to me was a MASTERPIECE. They did stuff there that was missing from future albums. Duty Now.. was good and songs like this have that magic. But they never really captured the feelings of Jocko Homo, Uncontrollable Urge, Shrivel up, etc again. Then the late 80s stuff was meh. But their MESSAGE never changed!!
Don't get me wrong. I have mad love and respect for Brian Eno. But, I think he was almost Devo's demise. I'm glad they held their ground in the studio.
@@badmonkey2222 He may hate it but the sound is definitely punk. I think the stage show made them more than a punk band. Maybe that's what he takes offense to? I don't know but you can't call the music itself anything but punk...
I think if they continued more experimental like ARE WE NOT MEN, would have been best. Duty Now is good but not AS good. This song is the best. Then Whip it happened. Freedom of Choice was hit and miss for me, with some CLASSICS but filler too. Their MESSAGE was ALWAYS the same though. I loved Something for Everybody in 2010, and am disappointed they didn't do more albums. It's like ARE WE NOT MEN 2.0. To ME anyway!
@@davidames1746 Eliminated the middle eight , R&B underlining typically al of music from 71 on , and were always utilizing off beat time signature. They were Alternative back in 73and were out way before the term PUNK was even a associated with DIY Music.
Yeah! Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA is the best song ever by DEVO. I saw them live in Frankfurt Germany (1990) while I was in the military overseas. They blew the roof off the place! I met one of the guys - Gerald Casale. He was awesome. *D*E*V*0* !!!
Beyond ahead of their time. One of the purveyors of synthesizer-driven New Wave (synthesizers as actual main instruments, not mere accompaniment), and even Performance Art, doing their avant-garde, outré VHS releases at the time. They sought advice from Laurie Anderson on using and perfecting (clear) rear projection during live performance, as she did in her groundbreaking, "United States I-IV" Live performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
my god, how does this work so well??? everything they are doing just works! if it wasn't for growing up on devo, i may have ended up normal! praise "BOB"...
Fresh as ever! Not all groups age well, but Devo's fusion of punk, techno, krautrock along with their theory of Devolution (I'm looking at you, MTV!) still rings the authenticity bell.
I've always thought Patrol/DNA was my fave song of theirs, I still do. Those helmets and glasses are so powerful as they are the cover look of Duty Now. This 78 live Patrol/DNA is as great as any I've seen right up til Desert Daze.
This makes me want to go find an empty concrete pool and drop-in! "We need to sacrifice ourselves so many others may live!" D-E-V-O: the most under-appreciated, brilliant, New Wave-Techno-Punk group ever!
Dudes- Devo is once again blaring out of the stereo( great having a teenager in the house) forgot how much these guys appreciated Kaptian Kopter & Commander Cassidy in Potatoland!.... Long live the Derevolution in Scotland
Purity, right there. Doing something original. And being subversive as all get out. And JUST TEARING IT UP!!!! My all time favorite DEVO song. Thanks so much for uploading this Cosmotype.
Devo has been the best thrash punk band in Los Angeles since '77 or so. Common stock we work around the clock. Suburban robots that monitor reality. We shove the poles in the holes.
Ummm no....that would be the Screamers who are in no small part responsible for DEVO. You sheep should do some research before making definite article statements.
Bob 2 is playing rhythm guitar next to the drums, while Bob 1 is playing lead, and going into the audience. And the funky sounds are Mark on keys, like pebbypoo pointed out.
nick1137, yeah, being dropped from the label would've enabled them to return to their creative license - they've bitched about their label demanding a certain sound on albums since then.
I have heard DEVO nearly 25 years or so (i just knew MONGOLOID)not.I agree with you bootlegapples!!!I am from Germoney,so excuse any grammatical faults
HA! nihilistic self-debasement at its best.I lov it when Bob kamikazis into the audience, inviting them to join them in self-destruct mode. The spiritual descendants of the Marx brothers.
Well, best response I can give is... If you think De-evolution is a joke, you're NOT gonna get the punch line!! Srsly, Devo was the purest form of Dadaist pop culture in the US at the timeline, and I think back then, the French knew about that and got it and supported it. Plus, all excuses aside, they fuckin rocked. Am I right?

Like Mongoloid and Jocko Homo, 9 years early though

Alan Meyers was a terrific drummer and very creative. He was easily overlooked with all the other stuff they had going on.
absolutely
Jon Bonham said he was his favorite drummer
The impact and influence of DEVO is completely misunderstood, and rarely acknowledged.
explain
They invited post punk with mongoloid alone

Mind blowing
This song is so hypnotizing...i could hear it a hundred times without having enough of it.
They are way ahead and eons ahead of our time.
the lyrics, the guitar arrangements, the coolness of perfomance..
WOW
I saw them in Akron in 1978 w/ Chi Pig opening. Easily one of the greatest nights of my life. This brings me back. Will always love DEVO.
Amazing show, to have been in that crowd...
Outstanding 😎
@URNmyRVM I totally agree with you. The worst thing to happen to Devo and The Talking Heads was the commercial success of a big hit.
Even so, Devo was one of the pioneers of that 80's "New Wave" sound. I like both, but I too prefer their early "electro-punk" sound.
How this isn't the most viewed video on RUclips is absolutely astonishing
No, even though this song appeared on 1979's "Duty Now for the Future", Devo had been playing some of these songs since the early and mid 70's.

Duty Now tour...one of the best for a long time.
Suburban robots who monitor reality!!! They KNEW the future......... This performance needs to be remastered to vinyl.
Dudes- Devo is once again blaring out of the stereo( great having a teenager in the house) forgot how much these guys appreciated Kaptian Kopter & Commander Cassidy in Potatoland!....
Long live the Derevolution in Scotland
Top of their form! Bob 1 is out-of-control!
DE-EVO you were damn right guys...way ahead of your time.
Thank you for uploading. This was the album that got me hooked in my teens 35 years ago. No band like Devo ever.
this is completely and totally awesome
Beneath it all, they were a great rock band, a high-powered machine.
Purity, right there. Doing something original. And being subversive as all get out. And JUST TEARING IT UP!!!! My all time favorite DEVO song. Thanks so much for uploading this Cosmotype.
Electric. Fantastic footage. As great a live performance as you'll ever see by any group, anytime, anywhere.
Awsome footage Devo's best song Classic highly underatted band in The U.S. too which sucks.
one of their best songs and albums
"we shove the poles in the hole"
2:40
i've just watched this about 20 times in a row
Best video on youtube.
wow wow WOW. Verge of implosion into total lift-off. Deconstruct, tear apart, slap back together jammin' band.
That energy is fucking unreal
Devo needs to rise up against the hipsters!!!
these guys ARE so badass
RIP Alan. You were fantastic
Watch him carefully at 3:38, where he knocks off his helmet with his drumstick and doesn't miss a beat.
...not just far ahead of their time...far ahead of this time even
Nice Video

@@davidames1746 music is subjective you dumb fucks
Good live version
That’s the most scathing “this Monkey wants a word with you” riff I everdone heard.
So EPIC! That is PUNK ROCK!
this is f**kin quality :D

Highly advanced.
we´re the smart patrol ! :-)
"im only a spud boy, looking for the real tomato" DEVO in concert Tempe town lake Sept 18 i hope they do a bunch of this old school shit......
I think the guitar sounds in the audience must be overdubbed. Great Job.
Bob 1 sounds so young
they upped the tempo on this one. daddy likey.
Personal anthem! SPUDBOYS UNITE!
fan fucking tastic!
from the desk of general boy: "DUTY NOW FPR THE FUTURE!" :-)
Metal meets punk, turns into sonic mosh pit accompanied by distortion attacks. God, I miss the 70s.

Brutal
don't think so, John Birch still makes the Super Yob, check that too
I wish I could flag this video for being too awesome! =p
around after 3:45 to 4:05

@pebbypoo Probably Keys.
Back when the USA was cool,
Wasn't weird at the time. Most male athletic shorts were like that. Check out the basketball and jogging shorts of that era.
ok!
3:50 analog magic happens
Looking for a real tomato !! :-))
Time to re-upload this concert?
is this not 1979 ?
What’s with the bicycle-ish outfits? Not their more typical toy store haz-mat garb. Did this performance take place during the Tour de France?
They wore the skater pads/helmets pretty frequently during the pre-AWNM shows
The show starts with them wearing the yellow suits
No one on this thread understands my potato...
Oh you want originality?? Devo is The king
キチガイカッコイイ
la storia....basta!!!!
The band that made a fortune out of being a joke. You have to admire the sheer chutzpah of getting people to pay for being pranked.

Way to miss the point entirely. DEVO kick ass like no one else
