This video proves what insanely good musicians Devo were. Everything about this is fantastic. Even with the insanely high energy and tempo, it's just spot fucking on, from drumming to vocals to synth to guitar. I am very fortunate to have seen them play this in person.
True, his drumming style has clearly been overlooked. I mean, don't get me wrong but i love Devo and all but it kind of dissappointed me the fact that after the release of their first 3 albums, they completely changed their musical direction which somewhat "overlooked" Mr. Myers drumming. Resulting in his leaving the band. 😢
Indeed.. Who knows what they'll be if they continued their punk rock sounds? Roll and Roll Hall of Fame maybe? That's the only thing that disappoints me with Devo... It's change in musical direction. Had to be honest.
the altruistic perverted thing to do would be : 1. hunt them down 2. soak them down with Mark Mothersbaugh's DNA 3. buy them a sense of humor and musical taste
Great on every album. Every EP. Maybe not smooth noodle maps or sonething for everybody. But they gave an insane amount of talent away for only little recognition. That should show you right away that they were about artistic progress rather than commercial success--even if they did get it 2 or 3 times.
@@peytonbass5396 Yeah, I grew up up a California boy during the 80s too (I've SINCE relocated and lived in some other states), so I remember THAT station. We west coasters were damn lucky to have a station like KROQ and the opportunity to hear all that interesting music that it played, cause MOST other OTHER places DIDN'T - they just had the Top 40 stations and the stuck in the hippy-era "Classic rock" stations and THAT's about IT!
Devo were a performance art project deconstructing reality. They played music to augment their multimedia presentations. This ends up looking like a band on stage as they progressed through their career. Incredibly creative group of guys.
I asked Mark for the settings he uses on the Mini Moog, and he sent me a patch sheet with instructions for recreating it. I'm using a software version of the synth with a keyboard controller and still haven't quite got it right. Close, and lovely, but not quite right. One day.....
I'm still just a Spud boy, Looking for that real Tomato.......Saw these guys THREE times back in the olden days 1978-79-80's era. "Duty Now" tour, "The Whip it Tour" and finally, "The New Traditionalists Tour". JUST AWESOME!! I'm so glad I was a teenager in the late 1970's early 1980's. How lucky can you get?.....My humble respect to them and much love-- -- R.I.P. Alan, Jerry and Bob.
I have seen many concerts. I've seen good bands totally stink and average bands suddenly give me goosebumps at a show. I saw DEVO put on a show where by the third number, the crowd was completely overcome by the sheer force of their originality, the driving beat and loud, clear sound. It was like standing next to Jesus.
I played in a noise / free jazz band with Alan for 7 years before he passed away. Rip the world misses you. What an honor....after listening to them as a kid and teenager....to play with Alan as a grown man.
Wow! That is really cool! I always heard he was a great guy too!! He was one of the ones I wish I would have met when I was touring. I miss his playing.
Alan was the heart and soul of DEVO. After Alan was aced out of Devo by Mark and Gerry's excessive use of 1st gen synthetic drums programs. After Devo's fourth album New Traditionalists there really was not much for Alan to do. Around 1983 their seemed to be a falling out between Alan, Mark and Gerry to the point where Alan exited the band and Devo's live shows/albums really suffered
Yes it is a dame shame what radio stations do. Play garbage music all day long. And leave what's real for us to get on our own. But that's ok. So go out and get what's real. Get DEVO!
Saw them in concert between high school and college. I saw real fearlessness. It was amazing and I've been pretty damned fearless ever since. Pink pussycat's also a fave song of theirs.
Absolute Genius, I played DEVO at the fraternity house to guys who only listened to Blue Oyster Cult and bands like that back in '79, they thought I was nuts, but the girls loved to dance to it and I got pretty popular
Anyone who wants to see the definition of what it means when a band is "tight" needs to watch this video. They hit each beat together like sledgehammers.
The thing about Devo is that you’re going to sound like an absolute lunatic trying to explain to non Spuds why they’re so fucking amazing. They’re extremely talented musicians. The outfits, the choreography, the precision, the AV, it all gets me right in the feels every time I think about them
I remember hearing them in highschool for the first time and (as a classic rock and prog rock fan) detesting their angular, skewed, disturbing almost anti-music music. But then, a few months later, I began to appreciate their geniusness and advanced new wave musicianship. Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo! and Duty Now For the Future were pioneering albums and their early disturbing videos should be recognized as art.
+Joe Munsinger Mine as well, one of my Top3 Devo songs. Beautiful World & Mongoloid are amazing as well . Truly great to see the guys (who are still with us) still making great music and being relevant even 40+ years later (( my first album was "Q: Are we not men? A: We are Devo" back about 1979)) . To be fair, The Cars were strongly influenced by DEVO. Hell, Greg Hawkes, in his acceptance speech at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, said, "I'd also like to thank Kraftwerk and DEVO, just. . . for being so good."
3:40 - Pure consternation; Mark looks disgusted, gestures "keep vamping," dives under the rack to try to get the keyboard to behave, then stands up to sing, "Wait a minute, something's wrong." I too feel so very lucky to have seen these genuine music geniuses 3 times.
Every show was amazing.
Yep Rismillers Pasadena, are we not grateful.
Alan Myers is a BOSS drummer on this track - I mean, an absolute MACHINE - one of the most UNDERRATED drummers in rock.
Agreed, as Devo increasingly focused/relied on drum machines vs. live drums, Alan must have been made to feel obsolete, so he left. A loss.
Indeed.. Who knows what they'll be if they continued their punk rock sounds? Roll and Roll Hall of Fame maybe? That's the only thing that disappoints me with Devo... It's change in musical direction. Had to be honest.
But for sheer impact/influence/ground-breaking work/vision, Devo is still long overdue to be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame IMHO.
I could say the same to their other contemporary the Cars. Such a shame how the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame have "ovelooked" such talents.
17 people didn't understand their potato.
Devo is love.
+Raven Jenkins now. We got one spud back.

You mean, perverts can be altruistic too? How come?
DEVO were great on their first two albums. So creepy, cold and futuristic. It's like prog garage punk.
Great on every album. Every EP. Maybe not smooth noodle maps or sonething for everybody. But they gave an insane amount of talent away for only little recognition. That should show you right away that they were about artistic progress rather than commercial success--even if they did get it 2 or 3 times.

I love the punk feel.

Beyond punk rock. Devo was the literal high water mark of rock and roll, and it has been de-evolving ever since.
This is one of the greatest crafted songs of all time. Devo is untouchable in their music.
