@@telophasemusic, yes! My own drumming has a little bit of Morris in it for sure. This guy breaks it down nicely: ruclips.net/video/Pe4CXzcuy8E/видео.html
Even in this warped VHS transfer there is so much energy in this performance that you think your screen is gonna blow watching it. And that intro! RIP, Bob 2.
The moment when Slap your mammy begins, its insane, like some people in the audience don't know how to react because of how intense and fast it is. Devo literally were pioneers of Hardcore punk.
in their early days pre 'whip it' and what not most of their fan base was punk rockers. i remember that i was into punk late 70's early 80's and pretty much all the punks i knew loved them.
I second that emotion! This song has it all, great opening cords by Bob2, Jerry's wicked kick ass bass line, Mark raging on the keyboard, Alan beating the shit out of the drums and Bob1's sleazy guitar wailing.
Mark was that close to inciting a riot...Lol I do believe O Brothers and Sisters that this is possibly the most intense performance from the church of DEVO..shout it do I hear a yes!!
Mark has said he developed the concept during his years at Kent State, he was a freshman when the shooting by National Guard happened and it influenced his vision.
This. Is. How. You. Do. It. Hardcore props to DEVO and 1970's French TV. And the 1978 blown-away audience, who had no idea what to do except...SOMETHING!!!
admit it or not,, DEVO is amongst the fathers of punk rock ...even if they became some kind of bizarre new wave band I've seen them live in 2010 and they are still giving one of the best show you could see!
I love this band, I've bought about 11 or 12 of their albums. Some were vinyl, some cassettes, some CDs. This is my favorite Devo song. Their sound is years ahead of it's time on this track. It's 1978 but you would think it was 1983, if you didn't know better.
Saw the band in Norfolk VA in July 1980. Essentially the same set. One of those experiences that I will always have with me. I still listen to them a lot.
The vcr and performance takes me back. Makes my heart and stomach feel warm from nostalgia. I miss these days and I miss music like this. If only you could go back in time. Wish I could live it over again.
When I tell people that DEVO started as an L.A. punk band (regardless of where they started..they made it in L.A.)...I tell them which punk clubs they played at and then I show them this video. GUT FEELING is one of the best rock songs ever.
But they carried the spirit of their hometown Akron, Ohio where similar avantgarde rock etc, bands came from. Ever listened to the legendary "Akron Ohio" compilation from the same year 1978? V/A - "The Akron Compilation" (FULL COMPILATION 1978) ruclips.net/video/OcwxHBpO9rU/видео.html
My favorite DEVO driving tune ever! Alan Myers is one of the most incredible drummers in history. DEVO has stood the test of time, they still reign supreme over Spud Boys, looking for that Real Tomato!! Thanks so much for posting this AWESOME video!
I challenged a local Seattle band to learn this song and cover it. It's not an easy song to play by any means. But this band has the skills to pull it off. I hope they do it.
The French sent Lafayette and the Statue of Liberty. In 1978,we sent them DEVO for a night. That's more than a fair bargain I think. DEVO was/is Absolutely awesome.
After seeing this band on late nite TV in 1978, I got rid of my flannel/workboot get-up and started to explore the "next-wave" of music.I finally saw them live, and 30 yrs. later they still rule THANKS DEVO!!!!!
All the rest of y'all poster's already understand....but for those of you who don't ...... This is what a truly great band is like ! (Especially this performance !!!!! )
As a nerd that grew up in the 70's and 80's .... this was the first band I remember seeing that embraced being nerdy and made it cool. Thanks Devo for making me realize that 99% of the population is stupid. What part of the population is not having a lot of kids? Smart people. What's the future gonna be like? Lotta morons running around that can't fix their own robots. But between like 1997 and 1999 things were good, huh? We were recognized, for a brief flicker in time. No pun intended.
Pretty close: Wings !!! Devo was fantastic and surreal for those days, but they were not alone. T. Heads, PiL, Young Marble Giants, etc etc... Great time for music off the beaten path.
I thought this band was supposed to be the "American Kraftwerk," right? LOL What a great performance! Punk as hell. They're going so fast by the end that the poor audio quality seems to blend some of their notes together.
What they pull off at the end is the proto model for hardcore. I don't think anybody knew what to think. I hope the French appreciated the signifance of this brilliance.
I kinda found these guys a while back and only recently realized how much I loved this song. Seeing them perform it live now in different videos through the years, flawless every time afaics... Absolutely amazing.
Magnificent version. Someone really should find the original tape of the whole French gig and remaster it for sale. It beats the hell out of 'Live 1980'.
Yep; it's art (but you can dance to it). The uneven bar-count accounts for the 'perpetual motion' feel of the 'Gut Feeling' segment. It's a rare compositional technique but other examples include the Pixies (many, as with 'Is She Weird'), Wire ('Culture Vultures') and Brian Eno ('The True Wheel'). Pretty sure Bowie would have used it somewhere as well. This example by Devo is also a truly magnificent piece of rock music Love the way it builds in intensity over those five obsessive chords...
wow, I'm getting goosebumps from the nostalgia. Thinking about playing my vinyl Devo albums I borrowed from a friend... been 30 years.... time to return them? Nah!
The older I get the more I appreciate the brilliance of Devo
I agree.
Rush Fanbaugh No band ever like them. Never will be again.
Completely agree , absolutely Brilliant band
Well said
exactly
DEVO literally blowing the freaking roof off!! Most ppl consider them "one hit wonders", the REAL music fans know the truth.
Unfortunately that is the case, it is what it is but goddamn is this great
Actually, Whip It is my least favorite song
The Eno produced album is a watershed
Actually, no. DEVO is now uber lindy.
One hit wonders? That's a weird way to describe DEVO.
I was there in the crowd....16 years old
Okay. Jealous!
This french gig has to be one of the best versions of Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy. Shit quality but the energy is through the roof!
RIP Alan Myers, dead at 58. - my fave drummer of all time. He's only about 23 here.
Ferenc Szabo he was a machine
Myers is hands down one of the greatest drummers to ever grace the kit. Him and Stephen Morris are my absolute favorites
@@telophasemusic, yes! My own drumming has a little bit of Morris in it for sure. This guy breaks it down nicely: ruclips.net/video/Pe4CXzcuy8E/видео.html
Fastest version of Slap Your Mammy ever played. Amazing! Makes all the old skate punks twitch and salivate.
Even in this warped VHS transfer there is so much energy in this performance that you think your screen is gonna blow watching it. And that intro! RIP, Bob 2.

Listen to Hardcore Devo. Pioneers for sure.
As a senior citizen one of my regrets is never having seen this band live.
This is fucking incredible.
that in 1978 there were yet modern music so made? :)
When i am 90 years old, i'll play this song 24/7 to be sure i never die
I second that emotion!
This song has it all, great opening cords by Bob2, Jerry's wicked kick ass bass line, Mark raging on the keyboard, Alan beating the shit out of the drums and Bob1's sleazy guitar wailing.
DEVO nearly breaks a VCR
Back when you could stay up late and watch this kind of stuff on independent television stations...
I love how this song builds and builds.
Mark was that close to inciting a riot...Lol
I do believe O Brothers and Sisters that this is possibly the most intense performance from the church of DEVO..shout it do I hear a yes!!
yes brother
yes!
Hell yeah...
David Brown amen!! Yes this is song that got me into Devo I am nerd hear me roar !!!!
YEEEEAAAAASSSSS !!!!!
You see, Devo is not just a band, but rather a concept.
Mark has said he developed the concept during his years at Kent State, he was a freshman when the shooting by National Guard happened and it influenced his vision.
America's greatest ever band, long live Devo. Im 60 and still love these guys.
Yep, I'm 58, the sound of youth!
There's just something special about their early shows. The rawness of punk but with underlying intellectualism that just grabs you but the collar
This. Is. How. You. Do. It.
Hardcore props to DEVO and 1970's French TV. And the 1978 blown-away audience, who had no idea what to do except...SOMETHING!!!

One of the best live performances I've ever seen. Classic Devo.
A seriously under rated band..the guitar licks in this is are mind blowing...

The greatest band ever IMO
This is the stuff that made punks in England say ... "I guess it started in America."
just remarkable - absolutely the best.
Oh. My. God.
Is there a better intro ever? There must be some candidates but this is top drawer.
Saw the band in Norfolk VA in July 1980. Essentially the same set. One of those experiences that I will always have with me. I still listen to them a lot.

Well ahead of their time AWESOME 😍
Brilliant! Peak era!
That's not even VHS, that's some good ol' Betamax tape right there!
When I tell people that DEVO started as an L.A. punk band (regardless of where they started..they made it in L.A.)...I tell them which punk clubs they played at and then I show them this video. GUT FEELING is one of the best rock songs ever.

Some of the coolest footage I’ve ever seen on RUclips. Firing on all pistons! Good god that’s great stuff.
A b s o l u t l y A m a z i n g. At least 30 years ahead of its time. What a lucky audience.
Classic Punk RnR! no bullshit, jst melt ur face Punker rock!
My favorite DEVO driving tune ever! Alan Myers is one of the most incredible drummers in history. DEVO has stood the test of time, they still reign supreme over Spud Boys, looking for that Real Tomato!! Thanks so much for posting this AWESOME video!

Love that transition from Gut Feeling to Slap your mammy. Pure punk bliss!
THis is the BEST SONG EVER WRITTEN!!!
The French sent Lafayette and the Statue of Liberty. In 1978,we sent them DEVO for a night. That's more than a fair bargain I think. DEVO was/is Absolutely awesome.
Greatest moment in rock history?
This is my favourite song from DEVO. Pure energy and awesomeness :)
I love Mark's keyboards on this. You can tell he's into it.
When ever I start to hate my generation far beyond anything, I listen to some Devo and realize...they were right. We're all Devo.
BEST .... SONG ....... EVER!
After seeing this band on late nite TV in 1978, I got rid of my flannel/workboot get-up and started to explore the "next-wave" of music.I finally saw them live, and 30 yrs. later they still rule THANKS DEVO!!!!!

RIP, Bob. Love Gut Feeling and about everything these guys did. We're all Devo!
Pure greatness
I could watch this over and over. They rule.
Just a fucking masterpiece.
Devo really worked their way up from the bottom. The ultimate in originality.
As a nerd that grew up in the 70's and 80's .... this was the first band I remember seeing that embraced being nerdy and made it cool. The one and only DEVO.....
Pretty close: Wings !!!
Devo was fantastic and surreal for those days, but they were not alone. T. Heads, PiL, Young Marble Giants, etc etc... Great time for music off the beaten path.
My favorite Devo song
Makes me wish RUclips was available back in the day 😮 Always have &will love them, Clockout Spuds ,❤
I thought this band was supposed to be the "American Kraftwerk," right? LOL
What a great performance! Punk as hell. They're going so fast by the end that the poor audio quality seems to blend some of their notes together.
Devo is a million times better and more intelligent than Kraftwerk. And I'm saying this as a German.
What they pull off at the end is the proto model for hardcore. I don't think anybody knew what to think. I hope the French appreciated the signifance of this brilliance.
There are no bad DEVO tunes, just bad listeners.
remember it was 1978. I think the recording adds to the overall experience that era provided. Its awesome.
I kinda found these guys a while back and only recently realized how much I loved this song.
Seeing them perform it live now in different videos through the years, flawless every time afaics... Absolutely amazing.
EAR CANDY!!!!! Never equalled, never toppped.
i saw them last night. best night of my life.
Just great!!!
so amazing - so wonderfull *****
Great vid tracking. Adds flavor to it.
At the end, who isn't waiting for "Come Back Jonee" to start? The 2nd side of that LP was shit hot.
I think Mark and Gerry would approve of the natural glitches on the VHS tape.
Dang, look at Alan go back there! How did his drum kits survive?? RIP Human Metronome :'(
This is the Weather Channel's favorite song.
Outstanding!
So glad I saw them twice when they were in their prime, 1979 & 1983.
La première fois que j'ai vu un type chanter avec un micro sans fil... au Palace, Paris, 78. We were so young.
Fantastic
awesome...amazing...outstanding
This song was in the Movie Otis..awesome song..
Haven't listened to this in decades, but I'm hearing Stranglers in this today when I never heard it before!!
Spot on. Best version I've seen. Those frogs didn't know what hit them.
wow, just amazing
what a voice MM is a sort of god
Devo is so great!!!
That'sDEVO, these boys are equipped.
i miss punk rock
... great song ...
Magnificent version. Someone really should find the original tape of the whole French gig and remaster it for sale. It beats the hell out of 'Live 1980'.
Forse il gruppo più elettro wave con spiccate doti tecniche compositive. .great
this is one song that needs to be played LOUD and unfortunately this upload is too quiet. Love those shorts guys!
This might be the best song EVER!...
There are some great stills in this. Fantastic.
This is bad ass.....
Gosh I love this song. The vocals/writing are top-top. I'd perform this at the drop of hat.
They just keep getting faster and faster
BEST. EVER.

Simply amazing - did not age one bit. Agree a front runner for "Best Song ever"
PURE GENIUS!
GREAT!!!!!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this early Devo vidi!!
thanks for making my week!
