► Ray Salmen was 65 years old when he vanished on the 9th of June 2013 from the shores of Harrison Lake in Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada. Usually, Ray would come out to these remote locations with his wife, Daniela and they would stay together. Sadly this time, he would disappear so thoroughly as to never be seen again while at this camp by himself without anyone else but his two dogs Elmer and Bandit, his truck, his camper and his raft...

    1) SWAT is never called out to a scene on a "maybe". They are only deployed when there is a definite dangerous situation where the average police or Mounties cannot handle. Having a headlight shot out is not something that requires SWAT. However, a hostage situation most definitely would. The Canadian authorities were not being truthful.
    2) The Canadian authorities suspiciously did not state whether or not Ray's shotgun and pistol were ever fired. They also did not state whether the shells in Ray's shotgun matched the shots that hit the headlight. In case you are unfamiliar with shotgun ammunitions, they come in many types - they vary in number and size of the pellets in each shotgun shells. It is a simple matter to compare the damaged headlight to the shotgun shells loaded in Ray's shotgun to determine whether they were damaged by the type of shells in the shotgun.
    3) There are also a type of shotgun ammunition call slugs which is a solid round like a bullet unlike shotgun shotshells which fires several pellets (birdshots or buckshots) which has a maximum range of only 49 yards (45 meters). A slug, however, can hit out to 110 yards (100 meters) and some special slugs call saboted slugs fired out of a shotgun with a rifled barrel can hit out to 160 yards (150 meters). Knowing what kind of ammunition Ray had and how far from where his backpack was found to where the car was hit, it is easy to determine whether or not it was Ray who fired on the car.
The Canadian authorities were definitely hiding something from the public.

      1) I would say the idea of someone shooting at cars and campers warrants a SWAT team to search the woods.
      2) I wouldn't say it's a simple matter to compare any damage to the car and his shotgun unless they did a metallurgy test. Shotguns are extremely common.
      3) Shotguns firing shot have a far greater maximum range than 50 yards and slugs have more than 150. A skilled hunter can double those ranges with a proper choke (for the shot). That's only the effective range... The maximum range is hundreds of yards for both.

I actually rolled vehicle on the southern flank of the nahanni valley, that is some vast wilderness and the Wilderness has about 10,000 ways to end your life,, there were definitely humans involved with this guy disappearing, where he was wasn't the middle of nowhere it was an hour away from one of the biggest metropolitan areas in Canada.
I live here I have travelled extensively here and I work in the bush.
You cannot compare the Wilderness of the Yukon or northern BC to just outside of Vancouver there is no comparison at all. Other than someone with no Outdoors experience can easily Parrish in both of them. But this wasn't due to lack of experience this was due to a large population of junkies very very very close. Anyone who's been to Abbotsford or Surrey knows that you got to get several hours away from there to get away from the nonsense, and Harrison Lake is not far enough.. I understand that if you live in Europe or in a big city it seems like the middle of nowhere but here in Canada being half an hour away from a major population does not constitute the middle of nowhere 🙄

You can just tell You are a good dude with a good heart and not only want to solve these mysteries for Yourself but the families as well. As pertaining to this case, the way the RCMP acts is beyond stupidity at this point and they are obviously hiding something and come off very sinister as I would not trust them with a bag of junk. How many cases is this now in Canada that these jerks act sinister and suspicious and like I said this is not the first time or I would say they are just a keystone cop organization but they have been acting strange in almost every case they are involved in. The RCMP can be scarily incompetent and negligent sometimes, and they are also known for trying to hide their mistakes. Usually, the provincial police are the ones that people can rely on, but there's some province that don't have a dedicated police and only have the RCMP. It's often the case for remote areas and smaller provinces. We are lucky to have one where I live, and only have the RCMP for very specific crimes, the less they are involved the better.

Im sure he left the dogs locked up to protect them too. Possibly he ran into a problem with some people or someone and stepped out to handle it himself and didnt want the dogs to be hurt or cause a ruckess of any kind. Maybe whoever it was, was actually complaining about the dogs for some reason,so he locked them up and then ran into something unexpected. Its always so sad when the family has no answers. I pray they find some. Another thought provoking one my friend!!

It sounds to me like he perhaps ran into human trouble. The kids? Maybe. There are a lot of very odd humans who run around in the woods. Not knowing anything about the group of kids, perhaps one of the odd humans from the woods were encountered. But why didn't he leave when he put the dogs away if he'd run into a dangerous nut?
He either locked the dogs up to keep them safe, or he locked them up because he was afraid he couldn't control them. There's no mention of the dogs and their ways of being as to whether either was possibly a bit dangerous to humans.
The shots... if it were him, those sound like they were signals for help. Dropping his pistol in a field sounds like he might have been in a panic. or was accosted and told to drop his weapon.
I don't think he went there intending to disappear. No one would lock dogs they love in a vehicle and just disappear leaving them to an unknown fate.

This whole thing screams of foul play. The only reason why Ray locked the dogs in the camper and proceeded to scout the area without them is probably because he thought he was being hunted by someone and not by a predatory animal. Also, the fact that they found some of his hunting equipment by his backpack and his sidearm pistol in a meadow tells me something terrible happened and it wasn’t by a large predator. You also have to consider that the Royal Mounted Police must’ve thought the same thing. Why else would they bring a swat team fully loaded with automatic rifles if they were only taking part in a search and rescue. Clearly they believed they were going to encounter someone or a group of armed people which may lead into a full blown Fire fight. Personally I think the Canadian Authorities know much more than they’re telling and they intentionally botched the search and rescue for some unknown reason. What’s even more crazy about this whole situation is that this isn’t the first time the Royal Mounted Police intentionally mislead the searches and the public when it comes to a wilderness disappearance. I’m starting to think the Canadian government does this sort of thing frequently. Hopefully one day we and Rays family will know the truth but until then, I don’t trust the Canadian Authorities on this one. Not one bit.

My first thought was that exploring abandoned mineshafts sounds like a pretty risky pastime for a lone 65 year old man. As for what the SWAT team expected to find I think his brother's comment about him running into armed people in the woods who tried to give him trouble in the past is more likely what they expected to run into than bigfoot. The RCMP are notorious for being all "nothing to see here," especially when they don't know what's going on. They will grasp at the most plausible scenario and run with it just so they can close the book on something. But in this case it probably is most likely that he injured himself and his body is still somewhere out there. It sounds like there is also a distinct possibility of foul play.

certainly an interesting one, thanks for posting sir! i think the best and simplest theory for what happened is that ray fucked around and found out. i can totally see an older man whos been going to a spot for years be a bit crotchety and yell/threaten the kids at the party to respect nature, etc. and it got to a point where ray intentionally shot at the car and camper for whatever reason (retaliation, escalation). perhaps the first three shots were a legitimate call for help and the second set was intentionally aimed. the dogs were locked up for their protection. it escalated and ray was killed. his bag was left near enough to camp that someone that night couldve placed it there to throw folks off the trail. the pistol couldve been legitimately dropped (mistake, forced to, etc.) or placed there after the fact. no body was found because it was easier to haul ray out and dump him somewhere else than to carry it into the woods. quite obvious ray didnt drown “accidentally.”

The Dogs are key here and so is the presence of an armed SWAT team after his disappearance. Perhaps they had the thoughts I'm having, that a very large and very fast predator [ like Dogmen or Sasquatch ] came in to take the dogs as dinner and Ray quickly put them in the camper, pulled a gun on said predator or predators, causing him to be snatched up and taken instead. There are also countless stories where a man has a weapon in his hands and the Bigfoot before him immediately becomes enraged, that they know what guns are. Some of these survivors say that they placed the weapon on the ground and the Sasquatch turns and leaves them standing there. Many have also reported that they were just barely able to pull the trigger on one of these strange creatures, the Dogmen are extremely volatile. The SWAT Team was probably called in by police who had experiences with the aftermath of attacks and disappearances in the wilderness areas by these creatures. They aren't allowed to admit what they know so many of the truths in these cases may never be known. This is only my opinion. Thank you for all your hard work friend.

This seems as close as we maybe will ever get for sure....we dont know do we what breed of dogs they were???? Had it been humans i think he would have let his dogs defend him but he knew they would easily be killed by a hungry or just vicious Dogman or Gugwe and he fled the area also to protect his dogs pursued by the whatever and held at bay for a while by his gun ;the 3 shots could have been a v urgent cry for help to get a car to stop as a last resort seeing he had no range up against the lake to shoot in time to save himself from a fast close attack

Yeah I thought the same thing. I was thinking maybe him and the dogs were sleeping in the camper and he heard and or seen something and then went outside with his firearm and locked the door to protect his dogs. But dogmen or bigfoot were the first thing that came to mind. The government and police know of these things and for sure would come in hot with automatic weapons. Maybe the person who's car got shot or other campers reported seeing a dogman or bigfoot that's how the cops got alerted to the threat? Aliens are also a possibility but if that were the case I don't think the swat team would of been necessary.

Agreed. I live in the woods and everyone is always making fun of our ways saying we're superstitious or worse, but we don't do anything that isn't a necessity because it such hard work to live here. Don't wear brights, whistle in the woods, turn your clothes inside out when lost, don't take anything offered or eat anything from strangers, don't listen to what whispers tell you, if you see something-no you don't, prostrate yourself and keep you're eyes closed if you can't get out of the way of woodlords hunting party.

We live in California coastal Redwoods woodlands
Del Norte country. It's very rural, when the Pacific Ocean fog blows in during late Spring until late Summer it's dense and muffles sounds. June gloom fog generates enough water to keep massive Redwoods fully hydrated until late summer rains return.
Tourism is the backbone of Del Norte county's entire economy so when people go missing its kept quiet.
Never go hiking alone & definitely never camp alone as there's miles of dense temperate rainforest were cougars hunt silently & large populations of black bears roam however it's creepy unhinged folks that pose the greatest threat.
At night the fog blows in dense & thick Redwood tree needles collect water droplets it's almost like rainfall coming down upon the forest floor.
It chilly at nightfall even in Summer always pack accordingly & never camp alone or unarmed.

I disagree with all the speculations. The very moment you said that he had been there many times I knew what most likely had happened. The "authorities" must look further into his personal life. It was not Ray who shot the headlights out of the car, but the person who had kidnapped Ray, to make sure that they were not spotted in the lights of the oncoming car. That spot is where authorities should have started. The fact there were a lot of people partying, etc., means that it was easier for Ray to get taken, unnoticed. Ransom was not the reason -- check his very personal life and what he may have been hiding from his wife. I think whoever killed him for whatever reason dumped his body in one of the mines Ray was planning on exploring and then went to great effort to sprinkle Ray's belongings everywhere to create confusion. When a crime is suspected on federal land, federal authorities do take over.

I thought exactly the same in regards to the shooting out of the headlights. My theory was that he was killed and in the process of being bundled into the back of a car or truck and another car came along, so they shot the headlights out to scare the driver away from there. Incidentally though, I did wonder why they didn't test the bullets to see if they matched his gun or not. Maybe whoever killed him had asked for his help fixing their car, so he shut his dogs in the camper thinking they'd just get in the way while he helped them fix their car. I think you are right with the random scattering of his belongings.

But your gone, vanished. Yet strangely some of your items are actually found but a distance away from the gun you left at the top of the hill. Im trying to look at this in a personal perspective. I wonder if he decided to go check out some mines close by and locked the dogs away so they wouldn't get hurt when he climbed down a mine shaft? A likely senario is after the mine trip he then decided to go for a swim to cool down but when he got out of the water a bear or predator came and knocked him down, where he then let of shots to frighten the predator or to get help, which is why the car headlights where shot, because he was on the ground? then he got up and ran up the hill to get away from the predator chasing him and that's where he dropped the gun because he couldn't use it to shoot anymore cause he ran out of bullets. Then further on the predator caught him or he fell inside the mine when escaping. So I think that they may want to have searched in the area where the gun was found and any mines that where near by.

What if Ray couldn't unlock the dogs? Maybe the trouble started as soon as he got out of the vehicle? Did he shoot the car on purpose or did someone else shoot Ray's weapon? Maybe he was disarmed and no longer alive and someone shot at potential witnesses or authorities and later took Ray's stuff to the beach, the wrong tracks? One or more attackers, psycho, poachers..? . I wouldn't bet the body was in the water. If a possible attacker (or more of them) realized after the shooting that he had time to hide the body and cover his tracks, the body may have been dislocated from the camp. Searches are slow, it takes time to gather people, so while moving, walking slowly, it is difficult to monitor around you and in front of your feet. Dogs aren't perfect, they can miss tracks. My shelter is 10-15 meters from the path, hikers and dogs never see or smell it. Depending on the terrain, but I think in this case there are enough locations to hide the body around the camp. There's always a notch, a pit, something, it doesn't matter how big or small the forest is. Or, you don't have to be far from the track, but break your leg and you're in a lot of trouble, hikers can get through without you seeing each other. Everyone who's a little more serious in the woods knows these things. ... The story is so chaotic that it doesn't look like an accident to me, I'd rather say it's a crime.

I think this is a clear case of foul play. If he had a gun to his head and was told to lock the dogs in or they’d be killed, he would have. Or if he’d heard or seen someone threatening in the area he may have locked them in and gone out with his gun to defend himself and his dogs. We know there have been strange and possibly dangerous people in the area. They could have killed Ray and disposed of him somewhere else entirely. The gun was probably just tossed into a random spot as well as his clothes. It’s a shame the RCMP dismissed the idea of foul play

There’s some kind of incorrect reporting or a misunderstanding going on here. A sidearm refers to a pistol. It’s illegal to carry a pistol in Canada. So, even someone like myself who is allowed to own restricted firearms cannot legally walk around with a pistol even in the wilderness. If he were carrying one, he was risking losing his firearms license and having all of his guns confiscated.
Also, ERT would have been sent in to clear the area before SAR teams out of safety concerns. It would have been to ensure that an armed person didn’t harm one or more of the searchers.
