  • Today Lee tests out the Mitsubishi MMT irons graphite shafts to see if they are an option for his future iron choices. Should more people look at graphite shafts? Is this graphite shaft going to change the way we think about shafts? Only one way to find out.

Went to lighter weight graphite shafts in my Apex irons a couple of years ago, never looked back, plus bag is way lighter to carry :) One word of warning though I originally stuck with my standard heavier steel shafts in my Vokey wedges, really struggled with full shots with the wedges as they felt so different, so in the end went to lighter shafts in the wedges to blend better, you may not notice but thought I'd mention. Great vid. stay safe.

I use SteelFiber shafts in my irons which I think have a similar concept to the MMT shafts - absolutely love them, get the stability of steel shafts with the lightness and ease of graphite shafts. So not a surprise that the MMT is such a good shaft
But Lee you definitely need some more lessons from Dan to get that launch and spin in a more sensible window. With a 33 degree 7i you should be getting 5800-6400 rpm and a descent angle closer to 46 or even 47 degrees.
Finally your idea of a nice easy swing is just so much faster than my flat out swing. I am definitely jealous

Di it Lee, you know that you want to! 👍😊
I have been playing the KBS Tour Graphite shafts in my Irons for a couple of years and will never go back to steel. They are so smooth and I get a much tighter dispersion than I did with steel shafts.

I am currently playing DG R300. It's basically what's been rammed into every golf club I've ever played.
OK, I started with S300 for a short while, realised it was too stiff and re-shafted to R300. This was in the days before the advent of launch monitors and the extra data they brought with them.
I'm still a regular flex, (although we all know that flex is not standardised across the industry), but I do feel that having slowed down a little over the last few years, I could probably benefit from lighter shafts. Not only from the reduction in effort needed to swing them, but with a hope and a prayer that U can regain a little lost length.
I watch your video and you obviously have a very strong swing and benefit from a heavier shaft. Not even looking at all the spin and ball speed figures, you even manage to gain on carry distance. The stiffer shaft obviously suits your stronger swing with ball speed increasing off the face. It is probably also the case that with the added tip stiffness and torque resistance you are also presenting the club face more squarely to the target line.
How about doing a video with someone like me? A guy who is a little past his best who is actually decreasing in speed and losing length with heavier shafts.
I don't want to criticise your presentation, it is very good, but it doesn't help my particular case.
I am looking at re-shafting my clubs from 127g DG R300 to something in the mid range that perhaps hits the ball a little higher, but gives me a bit more carry. If I stick with True Temper I thought about DG 105 R300.
I'd like to see a comparison between these two closely related shafts from the point of view of a golfer needing to actually go lighter rather than go heavier.
Do you have any advice in this respect?

    • @LWG
      @LWG  2 года назад

The 105 is a great shaft, in fact I was testing it today albeit in the stiff version. But the less weight and added launch will be a good change. The heavy R300 shouldn’t be the industry standard in shop shelf stock imo

@@LWG My story is that I have a set of AP2 712s (Titleist) 3-PW. Although I bought them literally when they were launched, they still look mint. This is due to the health problems that started just after I started playing with them. First a hip replacement then a triple bypass. I realise that golf clubs have moved on in the last 9-10 years, especially and specifically with the reduction in lofts, the partial obsolescence of the 3 iron and the almost total obsolescence of the 1 and 2 iron. The art of hitting the long iron i9s virtually dead. Much of this was in order to force the purchasing players into buying more expensive easy to play hybrids, but the other knock on effect was at the other end of the scale with wedge gapping.
At 66 years old and still a tidy golfer (I played as low as 3 and now play off 9), if a little slower, I'm not likely to qualify for the Open anytime soon. I'm happy to plod on with what I've got, all of which I have tailored around "my" game. Before all the health problems, I could carry a 7 iron comfortably 140 yards and my other clubs were dialed in off that club. That was with Dynamic Gold R300 at 127g a shaft.
I have had limited access to trying a few different lighter shafts, but these could only be trialed using the interchangeable system employed by the Taylormade Fitting Cart. I couldn't actually try a DG 105 R300 in my 7 iron head. The shaft was a proprietary DG 105 VSS Pro R300, the head I had to use was a TM P770 7 iron. This is 2° stronger in loft and 3 points heavier in swing weight, so the figures and performance is/are somewhat tainted and don't give an accurate comparison as to distance gained or pretty much anything else for that matter.
I have to think that a lighter shaft will benefit me in ways other than the objective, which was to enable me to regain some or all of the 10 yards I have lost. They will be less fatiguing to swing over a round or a 100 basket of balls at the range, hopefully. But that distance loss is still niggling me. I don't want to start messing with my lofts and I don't want a new set of clubs.
But it has been so difficult, because that is all I'm getting from certain quarters. All they want is to sell me new clubs. They are not interested in retro-fitting.
My own club pro has, to be fair, been most helpful, but I am still a little lost and in the dark and feel I am taking a gamble on total re-shafting. I think perhaps my pro is realising my uncertainty and has offered to initially re-shaft just my 7 iron and then I can go try it, which is really what I would have preferred from the outset.
It would have been good though if I could see more comprehensive comparisons with a view to improving a senior golfer's lot by displaying what options are open as regards shaft change as we get older. I do not believe that it should go without saying that at a certain age you should automatically change everything in your bag to graphite.
I have seen older players go from a regular steel shaft to a graphite and their game has gone to pieces. Where they were always straight down the middle, although shorter, they are now all over the place and in many cases worse off. I have no intention of going to the extreme of graphite. I have to believe that there are still some steel shafts out there that will suit my game.

I have Aerotech Steelfiber 95i shafts in my Mizuno MOP-20 HMBs, and they feel much better than the Project X LZ in my JPX-900s. The lighter shaft seems to make the club feel just a bit head-heavy, but not to the point of affecting the swing.

Lee I have always been a low ball hitter with a natural hook/draw and plenty of distance, 6 iron on down always came in low and hot with a hard time holding the greens. So over forty years ago I used my uncle's lie loft machine to add 2 degrees to all my irons, since distance was not a problem and I needed the elevation on irons shots this worked out fantastic. Now today and in my mid 70's I still do the same thing with these new low lofted irons, I mean for hell's sake they got pw's at 44 degrees. So 50 degree gap wedges are bent to 52 degrees and on down through (all) my sets of irons, the highest loft I carry is a 55 degree SW bent to 57 degrees. Now to graphite irons shafts been using them 12 or so years, they gave me back distance I'd lost through aging plus more elevation, so I definitely advise graphite shafts and bending iron heads til you get the heights you need. Good video, thanks.

I think you'll see more of an increase in spin if you change the ball as opposed to the shaft. And you can weaken the loft in apex pros with mmt and a higher spinning ball would be a dreamy set up!
