I was nine years old in 1983. I really don't know why kids wanted them, we just did. My friend had like three of them (spoiled!) and then I wanted one. My mother said that she wasn't going to even try to get one with all that craziness. She finally surprised me and got me one for christmas that year. I think she said it was near to closing time in the toy store just a couple days before Christmas and they had a few left and she was able to get one. It was a Preemie; I wanted a kid, but nonetheless, I was estatic! At that time, parents got whatever one they could grab, no matter which one. I still have my doll. :) Black Friday has nothing over the Cabbage Patch craze! Thanks for the memories Rad. I just subscribed!
My mom shopped early and was completely finished by black Friday, she got one for my niece who was around 10 years of age during that time. I remember how happy my niece was when she opened her CP doll that year. Us boys were just happy with things like Matchbox- Hot wheels cars or Lionel electric trains and air rifles. Kids now want the latest phone gaming system.
Haha. Funny to me when people go that crazy. I was a bit young to remember this but I do remember the dolls. Pretty sure my sister had one. I never ever went out shopping on black Friday. Not my jam. Happy Thanksgiving eve Rad man!
I have an experience with Cabbage Patch Dolls that perfectly explains the Gen X experience. I have four siblings, all Boomers and three of them married with kids, by 1983. I was 12 that Christmas. I was out Christmas shopping with my mom. She was determined to get these dolls. One for each of my three nieces, her granddaughters. We were at a store called "Best." It wasn't quite as crazy as this video but very crowded. My mother had chosen three dolls, and we were standing in the very long line at the register. After about 15 minutes of neither of us speaking, she suddenly looks at me and says, " Oh, I bet you would like one of these too." I say, "Well, yeah, kinda." She told me to go pick one out. By this time, there weren't any left, so that was that. Somehow, somewhere, she had managed to find one because there was one for me under the Christmas tree. To this day, that doll is packed way in the attic with her adoption certificate. My nieces don't have their's anymore. In my family, by the time I was born, I was more of an afterthought. I sometimes wonder if my birth wasn't some sort of govt social experiment. Someone decided they wanted to find out just how paranoid a person can become and still function by raising a kid in a family with parents that forget they still have a little kid and four narcissistic Boomer siblings who think they are the parents.
@Loraann54fi10 🤣😆🤣that's a great story! I've had some friends that had siblings old enough to be parents. The gap is huge. My oldest is 31 and youngest is 15 and even that gap makes them worlds apart. Thanks for such an awesome comment and I'm glad you still have your doll🤙🤙
My grandma made a few of the Cabbage Patch Kids identical or better than the original. I remember the craze hahaha. Then we had Teddy Ruxpin and Elmo! 30 years ago I was in the toy department and it was all about Power Rangers. They drove me crazy and kids would wreck the aisles!
@radgraham he was creepy then right after that we had the Chucky Dolls. Weird stuff and dolls back in the '80s. I was into ninjas back then and taking karate. The '80s had a lot going on far as the cool toys and the rise of technology. BMX, skateboarding, video games and everything was advancing...
@@radgrahamI'll have to check that video out unless I already have lol😅 I still have some Chinese stars or ninja stars and other accessories. I bought some smoke bombs out of Black Belt magazine. Kids have it too easy with the Internet. I should try ordering some more of those.🤔😆
@chaddeez8446 yeah they finally started reprinting Black Belt Magazine again and Dolph Lungren is on the cover. Here's the ninja video in case you want to watch ruclips.net/video/ttJrhg-N01w/видео.html 🤙
@chaddeez8446 I still have all my Masters of the Universe I opened as a kid. Been trying to build a proper display for them, but still haven't finished it.
I remember they sold those with adoption papers it was like you were adopting the doll not just buying a doll it's really weird or maybe it was birth certificates with their names I can't remember it came with some sort of certificate
What memories do you have regarding this happening in 1983?
oh, man - I remember that too! Still don't understand that craze. Remember Garbage Pail Kids? LOL Those were at least cool.
@@GEN-X_POV yes I do. Some of those things were gross af 🤣🤙
@@radgraham yeah, that's what made them cool! :D

The old lady saying 'I don't like them' was great! Haha! A real character, she should have been on TV more often 😂

Cabbage Patch Kids + Transformers. Parents were scrambling to find Optimus Prime.
@Mikedegot Oh yeah they were. As always the toy companies purposely made less of the most popular toy just to drive up demand🤙🤙
Cabbage patch feeling frenzy 😳
Wow cabbage patch.....I wrestled a few people to get a doll for Machel. It was wild!! I got the doll......
@@RachelRothermund yeah so was it you that went with Aunt Mary?
@radgraham yes, it was me.
My sister had a damn Rainbow Brite, Strawberry Shortcake (omg That Smell), and an ugly-ass Cabbage Patch..
@EightiesJames man I forgot about Rainbow Brite! Memories 🤣😆🤙
That’s not gen x shopping. It’s their boomer parents
Im first year gen x and was too young to make enough money to Chrismass shop. You are correct. Thats the boomers.
I was probably getting into He-Man and G.I. Joe by Christmas of '83.

@barbaralonero4306 yeah a birth certificate and a year later they would send a birthday card if the paperwork was sent in after purchase🤙
I remember all this from the news. Not a good look for those people
My mother in-laws first name is leota.
Technically that would of been the boomers. Gen x was the kids.
