We have actually two in my area. I live in Bangor, ME. We have a small one near the airport that hasn't seen heavy mall traffic since the 90's. Our main mall is slowly dying. It's half empty and the mall's current owner doesn't seem to want to put the money into maintaining the property and it's deteriorating. The roof is leaking, heating isn't working and the AC isn't working in some parts of the mall. It's in danger of being shut down by the city for failing to meet current building codes.
I was your typical GenX latch key kid norm in the mid 60s. To me the mall was our younger life. During the summer when you were alone you’d scrape up enough money to ride the bus to the mall, meet friends, eat lunch, play video games, see a movie and be home by 5 pm. When they torn down my old mall it was literally tearing down the fun times of my teenage years. I’d go there a few times a week just to look about and remember. It still played a huge part of my life when I bought my wife’s engagement ring in the early 90s, appliances for our first place and my kids clothes for school. It’s gone 12 years now but I’ve never forgotten the place.
I'm from there also, well I am a former Cotton Picker...anyway, and also living in SA. You are right on this. The malls were great when we were kids. I even had a job at Discjocky when it was next to Dillard's. Lol. So funny. Cheers bro
We have a dead mall here that they are actually in the process of tearing down/rebuilding. But there are others that are just ghosts next to the highway. It's sad, really. But ahh, the memories of many MANY weekends spent roaming the malls. Especially when I lived up in Illinois during the winter months when it was too damn cold to be outside. So much fun - thanks for the trip down memory lane man!
Cities all over the US are leveling all kinds of properties and building pack and stack apartments all over. It shows how serious cities are about their plan to remove private ownership of property. Where I live they have put up high rent apartments. But right across the street, you have an identical building for low income renters. Why on earth would I want to pay more if the same thing is across the street for less?
I love going to the mall every few months 🥰so fun to get together with friends/family and have a day out! I am 32 and will be going until I can't convince someone to tag along, even then I might go solo. lol
@@radgraham online shopping is so boring. I don't get why people find it fun. I understand for essentials but it loses something. Just being out of the house make me feel better even if I don't buy anything while out. Nothing like wandering around the mall with a cinnamon pretzel 😌
Since u live in Texas u should visit Mcallen in the RGV. This mall looks and feels like its still 1994! Its always packed and every store is open. Its called La Plaza Mall
'That entity' glad to see you getting your pronouns right Graham 😂 I'm sure I recognise that Sunrise Mall from other stuff too. Got me thinking if it was used in the Mallrats movie 🤔
Do you have dead malls where you live?
Not anymore, the one closest to us is Baytown TX. They just finished tearing it down recently.
@robertmoore1472 that's sad😢🤙
