I watch lots of videos on homesteading....day dreaming...but I always come back to Becky's Homestead because of your contagious enthusiasm and your common sense advice. Thank you for taking the time and energy to make the videos and sharing your life with all of us. You are right..."bigger is not always better". And more money doesn't always make you happier.

Becky you are amazing. you're living a life that I'd love to live but imprisoned here at my home bogged down alone with $8000.00 a year on property taxes, that I can't even imagine living a life as yours. it's a blessing the way you have there. alot of work but so rewarding. I can only imagine, day dream of the wonderful life you have. you seem so connected with nature and the way life should be, not the way we live enslaved by taxes. bogged down with job that is not even fulfilling. stay happy! : )

Becky, you are so fearless, creative, & passionate! I have really enjoyed watching your interesting and well-made videos over the past few years. My husband and I have been homesteading for six years now (well, 10 years if you count our "urban homesteading adventure"), and I just cannot imagine how much more time and energy it must take to add 'making videos and managing a You Tube channel' to our already never ending list of chores! (And we retired from our videography business to farm!) You really are an amazing and refreshingly open, honest, and helpful person, and you are very much appreciated!! Thanks for sharing your journey with us. :)

Your enthusiasm is contagious! We live in an eighteenth century parsonage, and have dabbled in many of the homesteading practices you are doing now while our kids were small, but our children have now grown and are on their own...thinking about getting back to this again, now that it is just my husband and I in the big old place....love the soapmaking too...! Thanks for sharing!

You're right about the things you said concerning a small homestead. My former place, which I rented, was probably about 1/2 acre. On that I had goats, chickens, pigs, raised bed gardens, and a few fruit trees. It takes very careful planning and the animals, except chickens (they free ranged), need every bite of food purchased -- hay and grain. Now I'm buying 3 acres, have gone off grid, and have lots of room to expand even though this is still considered a small homestead. 3 acres, for me, is plenty!

@@didiercortes6336 one thing I'd recommend not getting is the horses. I'd get more chickens or something else that can produce food for me. The horses are mostly expensive pets. You'll put way more into them than you will get back. She can afford it but she has a youtube channel helping her pay for the pet horses.

All the critters look healthy and happy. Yes, small pastures are fine for horses if they get enough exercise. I've had horses my whole life, and have always just had them on a regular worming schedule per my veterinarian's advice. I've kept them on 20 acres, and then 4 acres when I downsized. No difference. (I rode quite a bit as well). :) Great video!

Hi Becky, what is your timeframe for the orchard? If you have a little patience you could start from seed and just plant a whole bunch - about 50 - 100 maybe. In the second season you can choose the strongest and graft them. Other ones can be used as mulch, others could stay for another few years and be used for bartering later down the road. Starting from seed is a little bit more complicated but those trees usually outgrow dwarf-stocks after the 3rd year easily and will be more adapted to your site.

You are working with a multi year plan, which is what everyone should do. You can't usually get it all done in just a few months, particularly if you are doing most of the labor. That is why so many homesteaders fail, they get frustrated, overworked, and over burdened in debt.
You are doing a great job Becky! Just keep at it, some day you might decide you want more acreage, and will make a deal for some adjoining you.

  • @jeanhodgson8623

Thank you for your excellent videos. Much respect.
I have had a question for a long time. You must have several helpers for this house and farm. No-one could look after all that on their own.
My favorite video segment is the bit where you are holding Jet Lee, the reddish-brown rooster. It is hilarious when he struggles and cackles angrily. My son and I had fun watching that.
    Best videos in years. Thanks.

Ms, Becky you are looking and sounding GREAT these days! LOVE your lil homestead., its very envy provoking!! I also live on a small homestead. I have just gotten turned on to dwarf fruit trees! My first 2 trees have arrived, and I am ultimately planning a dwarf orchard with a wide variety of fruit. Dwarf fruit trees produce full sized fruit. Dwarf trees can get up to 6-8 feet tall, much easier to manage and harvest.

Thank you Becky for all your tips, I am at the end of my thinking process... I am going to buy some land in the summer. Better late than never. It is not as big as yours, but the first thing I am going to build is a log cabin. Or house, as my home needs to be wheelchair accessible to be registered as a permanent home, here in Norway. And, I will not build it myself. I can paint and do other things, but I will leave the construction to the people that knows what they are doing. i will start with some chickens and some berries, then I will have a couple of fruit trees. Will not chew over too much, I have my work too. Cant wait! :-)

Some advice on planting trees: plant quite a few more because you can't expect them all to survive. Over the last couple of years I have planted 9 or more and I have 2 left. I just planted 4 more trees and plan to plant 4 more within the next month. I find fruit trees to be very prone to disease. (OR maybe I just have bad luck or am not a very good steward.)

I have 2 blueberry bushes in my front yard and keep netting around it so the deer and birds don't eat them but you need to have 2 different types of plants to cross pollinate with. One of my bushes produces berries that can be 1 inch round! I think they are something like Blue boy or Big boy. They are sooo good and the others produce regular sized 1/4 to 1/2 inch berries. I make jam every year but the robins are magicians and can get into almost anything. I have to put rocks all along the bottom to keep them out. Your property is looking very nice. Have you thought about giving your pot belly pig more room to run around as well? You are doing a great job out there.

In your orchard, please consider multi-variety grafts eg 4 kinds of apple/tree or 2 kinds of peach per tree and consider dwarf trees up to 8 feet at maturity plus they are easy to espalier, (making harvest easy and an easy way to increase the number of trees the land holds. This way if you have a few 40/60 foot trees you can still have your variety.

Be sure to add a lemon tree to your orchard. :) Theyre self pollinating, only takes one tree for fruit.
Good luck with your fruit orchard. My Dad just planted one using a lot of tips from this video. Maybe check it out.
It's about having a small backyard orchard and pruning the trees so that you do your work from the ground instead of a ladder. Unless you want your trees to get that big and use a Ladder of course :)

For healthy horses, with a reduced risk of worms, and room for them to graze, you should have 5 acres per horse. I know some people can't afford fences for that, but just if you're wondering...
Also, wild horses constantly move around, and they should have more room, so they are not cooped up.
At least if you have the room.....

+Diba De All equine, horses, mules and donkeys can live just fine on small property if manages well. I worm my whole homestead with DE and we ride often. As you can see my animals are happy and healthy, it all comes down to the layout and management of your homestead.

Becky's Homestead worming should only be done if your equine has worms, or needs to be wormed. I respect that you want a small piece of land, but they would be happiest in not acreage. But I get what you are saying. As long as you excersize them.

I'm curious; what is the reason for the correlation between space and the incidence of parasitic infestation for horses?
How do movement and space impact on that?

Becky if you burn that wood in the middle use the wood char for a soil amendment. It is as good if not better than a wood chipper for mulch.

Hey Becky, I have enjoyed watching you develop your homestead over the years. Your advice is great and I love your can do attitude. I was wondering if you had considered doing any food Forresting? You certainly do have the perfect place for it. Keep the videos coming!

Great segment Becky. Curious about your garden. There seems to be a lot of sandy topsoil. Are you doing anything in particular to prep the ground or fertilize? Thanks.
