I love this video, so chock full of good info! Can I use something other than cedar chips for the chicks, cause the smell of cedar chips is so strong it takes my breath and I wouldn't want the chicks to breathe it either. What do you recommend I use instead?

I've read that cedar wood shavings are not a good option for chick bedding. Cedar is far to aromatic for the chicks immature lungs and can cause respiratory distress. Pine shavings would be a better option. Hope this helps someone out.

Werr getting our first batch of chicks next week, we stopped by the feed store to get all our items for them yesterday and my kids got to hold the baby chicks, this morning my three year old woke up talking about how much she loved the baby chicks yesterday. Makes me even more excited for our little chickens to come!

This was an EXCELLENT video primer! Thank you for returning to the subject of chickens, and placing everything we need to know to get started in one convenient video. Definitely one to save to my hard drive!
Also, may I suggest you consider producing an updated version of an earlier video, where you described the different breeds of chickens? I would be interested in any insights and experience you gained since making that video.

This is a nice video! I do love collecting eggs as well. Over time the eggs can load up to a lot of money in a store but with chickens, they can be more expensive because, you have to keep providing food and I’m already &1000 Into six chickens. Becky, you have a very very good point though because the eggs you buy at the store can add up to the same amount you paid for your chickens. You have helped me also save a lot of money. Thanks for teaching me how to raise baby chickens properly, and teaching me the ways to spoil my chickens!!

Becky, you have been looking so pretty lately!!! -such a difference from when you first started your channel. (not that you weren't cute). You just look like you have lost so much weight, have a different hair color/style, and nice make up look. You just really look great! You look like you are happy and that may also contribute to your new look. On another note, I personally love your friendly voice. It is so sweet. lol Ps. I so appreciate your channel. I learn so much (great content) and you are very entertaining. I just really enjoy your channel... I figured it would be nice to give you props and compliments since it's important you know how appreciated you are since it is obvious you work quite hard to produce content to help others. So thanks again love. GOD BLESS YOU!! xoxo

Heyyyy, as someone who's kept reptiles: that weird looking heat 'lamp' is actually a ceramic heat bulb. Just to save you guys some search trouble. They're excellent at maintaining heat without the same light effects and tend to be slightly more fire-safe.

When i was a kid my mom would buy two baby chicks for us and we had to care for them. We use to put them in a tub and at night only we use to place a bottle with hot water in to keep them warm. They were just fine and cozy. We never lost any. Now days there are so many things that stores recommend! I believe chicks do get climatized into weather temps. If too cold give some extra heat but i think they will be just fine in warmer parts of the country. As with everything, the more we baby animals, the less strong they become.
Thank you for all the info you provide. So helpful! Don’t you have problems with predators in your area? I notice your coop is completely open and can’t lock chickens in, or the run doesn’t have a net on top.

Got 17 chickens to raise for my own organic eggs because I don't wish to support factory farming egg industry and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH. My chickens are my babies. I had no idea what wonderful pets they are. I've had them 8 months now and loving them so much. My one hen went broody so I saved a few eggs for her to sit on and looking forward to our second generation chicks. (We have 4 roosters, all such sweethearts). I miss when my babies were teeny little chirps but probably getting more breeds next year that I really want.

Thanks for a very informative video. I just found out that hens can lay eggs w/o a rooster ! So it would be practical to have chickens in the backyard, as long as the law allows it. Well, I might just do that, because I love chickens. I even have a bumper sticker stuck to the side of my fridge that says just that. I bought it some years ago when they still had "The Chicken Store" in Key West. Key West has lots of chickens that run around loose and at one time they had to pay a guy I knew to catch them so they could be shipped upstate because the people were complaining about the roosters making too much noise.
