I seen godspeed play this album in its entirety (funnily enough in the venue where anesthetize live was recorded) and the music from the album is a soundtrack to the movie they show, the album itself is only half of the piece of art. I remember being very emotional and drawn into the story they were telling. A magical concert.
I know this goes against the concept of the podcast, but I suggest a special episode on film scores. It would be interesting hearing your thoughts on many musicians who made soundtracks like Scott Walker, Jonny Greenwood, Tangerine Dream, Cliff Martinez, Trent Reznor etc.
I'm not gonna lie, i was hoping for them to go longer on At the drive in. On the other hand i'm glad to see somebody finally breaking down D'Angelo, ever since i saw the show Atlanta i've been curious about what makes him so special.
Steven loves using his hands to express his views it’s quite funny - while Tim just twiddles his thumbs calmly looking as if he can’t wait for it to end.😂😂
Godspeed's masterpiece in a of ways, although it's a mood record. I enjoy some of Relationship of Command, but have never been obsessed with it like many. The Mars Volta are a different story.
this podcast is such a great way to discover new music. I've just been listening to Songs: Ohia's Ghost Tropic because of this and yeah...that is really good!
Just finished the Ghost Tropic record, didnt dare to start on his discography before because of how I didnt like his voice, might have just been where I was in my life at the time, but now Jason Molina reminds me alot of a cross between Neil young and Scott Walker 90's broken croons. A great Singer-songwriter record. Thanks for the tip!
Songs: Ohio, Ghost Tropic is a great album. It's a 'hard one' for your moods (watch Mr Bean after listening to chear up 🙂), but it's a wonderful masterpiece of music.
Interesting to note when you talk about Jason Molina and how he sounds like Neil Young that his later work leaned quite heavily into the influence - the Magnolia Electric Co live album Trials and Errors is almost Neil Young worship in a way (and not a negative one, it's one of my favourite live albums) right down to Jason quoting lyrics from Out On The Weekend during the extended version of Almost Was Good Enough from the last Songs: Ohia record The Magnolia Electric Co. ruclips.net/video/ZYU9588BI44/видео.html
I'm so not a fan of Lenny Kravitz. D'Angelo won't give us many albums, but they will be worth the wait. I couldn't get into the Avalanches (it DID sound "new" in 2000) it actually makes me feel claustrophobic. Love the sources, not the album. Its success made it's follow-up near impossible and when it happened, much less appreciated. Loved the shout to Mark Kozelek. His way of covering songs is they way songs should be covered. But it's true, he's been stale in the last decade+ and his singing has become lazy sounding instead of his earlier more distinctive emotive style. Ironically, his guitar playing has become exceptional. Your description of Ryan Adam's "not alt-enough" is almost exactly why he was such a good seller. There's a huge demographic that he nails with this description. Love GSYBE but there are too many WAY too many "post-rock" imitators. They all sound great, they all have ridiculous song titles and they all maximize their "mystique". It's not post-rock. It's only post-rock-marketing. Yo La Tengo outside of their first few albums are completely a known quantity. It's a beautiful quantity. But they lean into what they do, and don't do more and it's often enough for who they're singing to/for. The Crewdson image for album cover is the best thing. Yo La Tengo are your favorite blanket you only need once or twice a year at most. Except the early albums. Those are great frequent listens. Love Gastr del Sol shout.
I grew up in the USA around music played over the radio or MTV and that primarily meant grunge. One band I don't hear Tim or Wilson mention as much is STP. Scott Weiland is a legend and reminded me so much of Bowie and T.Rex
Send us your album reviews and questions for inclusion on future episodes of The Album Years, we'd love to hear from you! fanlist.com/thealbumyears

Swans🖤 God Speed You Black Emperor 🖤 Atmospheric geniuses 🤫

I support!
Good idea
Yes, well eventually they will run out of years to review so some other ideas would be needed!
They always dedícate a section for classical and film scores
This definitely would be great
Oh good. Tim brightens my day.
tell us about some of your pain?
“Really not much from 2000 in our catalogues…. Here’s part 2 of 7” - Steven and Tim
That Yo La Tengo album is a masterpiece
Hiphop began with sampling / DJing but the first released hiphop album was recorded with a live band.
Bright Eyes have fantasticly produced albums after fevers and mirrors, one member is the producer ,another one does movie scores etc.
Love this podcast! It's astonishing, engaging, absolutely relevant, and I'm always keen to listen to your profound, music-nerdy perspectives.
The 3 albums to listen to by Yo La Tengo are Painful, Electro-Pura, and I Can Hear the Heart Beating As One.
Cheers!

same, the At the Drive-In album is one of my all time favorites
Same here, got me curious to know what they think of it, but they went straight to the next one
I could listen to you both talk all day about music.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The Shaggs! Not heard the mentioned for years. My pal foot foot is my favorite by them!
You've mentioned Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric". Fun fact: Pino Palladino is all over his album, 'I, Assassin'.
I’m so glad Steven is a DJ Shadow fan!
Steven loves using his hands to express his views it’s quite funny - while Tim just twiddles his thumbs calmly looking as if he can’t wait for it to end.😂😂
I would recommend checking out Ryan Adams albums Love is Hell and 29.

I'm waiting for the Opeth Album Years!
Daisies of the Galaxy, one of my absolute faves back in the day as a massive Eels fan.. wish you had talked about it a bit longer!
+ Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of Bewilderbeast!
Classik UK indie songwriter (debut) record, won the Mercury Award I believe...
I love Godspeed You! Black Emperor and that album is a must for every music fan.

Thanks for filming these. This will keep the podcast feeling fresh
It’s on video!❤
Good to see one of my favorite artists Jason Molina getting some well deserved attention. Ghost Tropic is a masterpiece. You sum it up well.
Wow, I only have heard one album of all of these. Never heard of most of these artists on this episode.
Check out Songs:Ohia - Magnolia Electric Co.
It is good seeing you guys! At last!
good episode!

Part 2! Yes!
8 mins in... this is great 🤌👌
When are we getting a full Taylor Swift discography review ?
10:25 I love the way how you pronounce Pekka Pohjola 😊
It's Finnish. That's how it's pronounced. No?
@@anthonychilds8193 they left out the letter J which is not silent. Try to put it on ggl translate and you'll hear.

I LOVE TIM AND STEVEN

I wish Steven Wilson would cover a song by Jason Molina
Elton John was inspired by Ryan Adams' HEARTBREAKER which resulted in Elton's SONGS FROM THE WEST COAST album in 2001.
Thanks for your interesting discussion about these year 2000 albums. Enjoying it!

I didn't expect such negative comments about Godspeed You! Black Emperor's album Lift Your Skinny Fists... It's a masterpiece.
They could never produce an album that good.
How about a new No Man album? 😊
You forgot Kevin Gilbert's The Shaming of the True! One of the best concept albums ever made.
We did cover this album as part of our progressive rock topic, it's coming up on a future episode!
@@thealbumyearspodcast Great! Looking forward to hearing.
Is it not possible to include 10 second clips of the songs you mention without running into copyright issues?
Steve is morphing into Sean Locke
No Modest Mouse? The Moon & Antarctica would be worth a mention.
......."blah blah, Scott Walker, arrgghhh drinking game"!
um, guys. no one in america ever heard of these bands
Steven s
Tull trying to be trendy
I like other post-rock bands better, like early Mogwai, and Russian Circles.
'Crescendo' does NOT mean 'musical climax'. It's an increase in volume.
You're welcome.
