  • The Cult of Skaro want to make a brand new start of it in old New York in this Series 3 two-part story 'Daleks in Manhattan' and 'Evolution of the Daleks' If they can make it there, they'll make it anywhere.

I loved these episodes because it gave the daleks some individual personality, which I think is something they've been missing. It's fine when Davros is involved because there's someone to bounce off of, but normally daleks are just interchangeable and throwaway. The Cult would have been great as a more recurring characters building up to this episode.

When I first saw Daleks in Manhattan and Evolution of the Daleks when I was little, I loved it by sheer virtue of it being a Dalek story. As a teenager who thought he could be analytical, I insisted it was rubbish. These days, I can see a lot of good in it, and while it's by no means a classic, I feel it ranks alongside the likes of Resurrection of the Daleks, Revelation of the Daleks, and Victory of the Daleks as a decent Dalek story with a lot of fun and memorable moments, but there's just enough negatives to hold it back from being one of my all-time favorites.

I actually loved this story arc since it tried to put the villians in a desperate situation to the point that they would try new creative methods to survive.
Its really sad that Dalek Sec got the short end of the stick since he began to become more symphathetic and was able to see the problems with the Dalek mindset. If only they had let him survive, he could've become a potential companion for the Doctor, who he considered his equal.

I definitely need to rewatch this one. I remember never really liking it even when I was a younger and always assumed it to be one of the rare absolute misfires of the RTD era. I didn't like it on my last rewatch but that was a few years ago and I've only recently started to read defenses and analysis of it so it's only fair. Even if I still don't like it at least I've given it the benefit of the doubt, and it's got enough good elements for it to avoid the absolute worst tiers of the revival.
Your hypothetical joke about the Internet complaining about this story if it was out now is hilarious BUT I believe Raynor got a large amount of abuse in 2007 for the very reason she was a woman who wrote a poorly received story and this almost put her off writing another one. Luckily RTD talked her into doing another one and we got the Sontaran two parter which I love.

      Mayo Tango131
It’s fine if you don’t like that element, but there is more to Series 2 than just that.
The Christmas Invasion - a suspenseful story about an alien invasion where the Doctor isn’t around to save us, so it’s up to his friends to hold the fort while the Doctor recovers.
New Earth - a laugh-a-minute romp through a hospital from the future where David and Billie get to show their range as actors playing the lovable diva Cassandra.
Tooth and Claw - Queen Victoria and a werewolf. And the Doctor has seen the Muppet movie. Enuff said.
School Reunion - an emotional tale involving the Doctor confronting his past while Rose starts to gain some perspective on her relationship with the Doctor, and how strange it really is. Also, Mickey and K9 team-up.
The Girl in the Fireplace - yet another emotional tale. This one showing us through the terrifically silly device of a fireplace how the Doctor sees his relationships with other people - with them forever being on the slow path.
Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel - a great reintroduction for the Cybermen and a lovely conclusion to Mickey the Idiot’s character arc.
The Idiot’s Lantern - yeah, this one’s just okay. But Tennant and Piper are a lot of fun as the odd couple.
Impossible Planet/Satan Pit - Alien meets the Exorcist with a deeper exploration in to the Doctor’s character and Rose having to keep both herself and the crew together while the Doctor is trapped with no way to escape? Oh yeah, this is the RTD era at its best.
Love and Monsters - a lovely tribute to the show’s fans and how it brings people together through its ridiculousness.
Fear her - a tonal mess of an episode but still watchable -especially the pure Doctor/Rose hi-jinxes.
Army of Ghost/Doomsday - an action-packed, emotional farewell to the Doctor’s original post-time war fam. Still as much fun and moving as when it first aired in 2006, and my personal favourite finale.
TL;DR - I STRONGLY disagree with you, sir.

I found certain moments like Martha and Tallulah shouting Dalekanium and the way the Human Daleks marched and the way Sec sacrificed himself felt over the top and cheesy. This thought occurred as they were surrounded in the theatre and everything just clicked into place and I enjoyed the episode a lot more after that realisation.

It's a decent story. I like the Daleks and the idea of one visionary becoming impure, and their fascism undercutting imagination and creation is a well done theme. I just don't see much reason for this to be set in the 1930s. I mean, I can see a vague reason for why Victory of the Daleks was set in WW2, especially for their influences, though this could be any time or place and the story is relatively unaltered. It's a fun time.

I also hold some nostalgia towards this episode as I remember watching it all the time with my dad when I was younger. And tbh I was actually sad when they killed off dalek sec because I liked his characterisation and his interaction with the doctor. He reminded me of a younger less evil and facised Davros, and I love how through out he questions his species and wonders if their cause is wrong. Personally I think I enjoy the story so much even to this day is because I prefer dalek stories were it is only a small group/one dalek that is trying to fight for survival to continue to live on, whilst I do enjoy dalek stories where it is a full dalek empire like journey's end I just feel when it is a small group of daleks they get more characterisation and room to grow they are treated like actual characters and creatures rather than some bad guy that need s to be defeated. I also find it ironic that in the next dalek story dalek Caan causes the near extinction of his whole race because he realised the flaws of his race exactly like sec did (it is also due to the fact that he was turned insane) and it's more ironic because when Caan scapes the doctor (again) he is sent back into the time war unprotected and saves his creator (which we never get an explanation of how but to me the explanation to how it happens is in the episode called the dalek that time forgot and and yes Ik it isn't cannon). Btw love these videos I've been watching them all in order as I always like to hear another whovians opinions on the episodes keep up the good work xx

But 2nd best Dalek story. Compared to Invasion of the Earth, Power of the Daleks, Resurrection, Remembrance, Eccleston's Dalek, Magicians Apprentice (hell I could even be tempted to add Absolution, arguably the best Whitaker has done so far). Not really seeing it.

I'd just like to mention that I find it stupid how Dalek Sek says "But there are millions of humans and only four of us. If we are supreme, why are we not victorious?" First, you didn't attack THESE humans. You could slaughter them all no issue. Second, humans didn't get involved in a dimension/time-spanning genocidal war. That was you and the Time Lords. In fact, there are four of you and ONE Time Lord, so technically, you're winning!!

I don't dislike this episode as much as i did when it aired (it's still not good), when it did was when dalek fatigue started to set in (this was the 4th thime in three series that they had appeared and the constant overuse of the three big villains is an issue still with new who), there was justbno need for yet another dalek story.
But the pig men and the sub plot with the pig man and the singer with the annoying voice (due to a fake accent) was really bad.
The political aspect is good (but that isn't enough for me to like it) and the idea of the daleks trying to evolve is interesting but it's the execution of it that is bad, like the doctor having to climb the tower and the lightning and the design of the human/dalek hybrid and the doctors timelord dna somehow getting into the dalek humans (which makes no sense).
I agree that the dalek tommy guns are cool.
