Yes he was probably the best Master other than Sir Derick Jacobi from the short two part episode with number 10 Martha and Captain Jack. He starts out being a kindly old gent who's been building this huge escape ship along with his odd assistant girl. Then Martha spots the Time Lord watch that number 10 had just used to hide his true identity. The moment the drumming starts up in his head you realize oh no..
it's him!!! The look on his face changes and he becomes suddenly cruel and evil looking, perfect transformation!! I would have loved to see a bit more of him as the Master with a little more dialogue between him and Tennant. He was always a great actor who should have gotten better use too bad

I think it wasn’t completely screen ready, there was something about it on the 63:88 channel, last minute issues of the plan to borrow one from Terry meant it wasn’t the one they’d prepped. I think somebody nicked the top half, so it was a push to get the replacement top painted and ready on the day.

Years ago, my local PBS station ran a Dalek marathon, showing a Dalek story a week on Sunday nights from the beginning. So, you have my respect for going through these daily and not weekly as I did back in the day. By this point, there is a pattern to the Dalek stories that is becoming clear: tease them in the title but then they won't show up until the cliffhanger of episode one when we're all supposed to be surprised by this development. And you're right that Terry Nation loves to use elements of stories over and over and over again...but that did lead to us getting Genesis of the Daleks. The DVDs tells us how Barry Letts called Nation out over turning in the same script as twice before and challenged him to write something new. The result was one of the greatest stories in all of Doctor Who.
Pertwee was pretty much not a huge fan of the Daleks either. And given his three Dalek stories ain't exactly home runs, I can see why.

I have to give my vote to Tom Bakers Genesis of the Daleks especially as it clears up a bit more of how Davros came up with them, plus I always preferred Sarah Jane Smith to Jo Grant. Jo always seemed to whine too much in my opinion. There have been few female companions who were not just screaming and running damsels in distress. During Tom Bakers time the stories got a bit darker with a victorian age Hammer House horror feel. I'm from the US but I believe this was about the time that one old woman and her group really began to attack the show. I believe this is what caused it to be canceled not long after. On Toms departure they decided to make the show more kid friendly this led to number 5 and then 6 being toned down and having to wear rediculous clown clothes with number 7 McCoys being the worse, he was a idiotic imp dancing around. It wasn't until right at the end around the time of the Fenric episode that they toned down his dumb outfit and the plot became a bit more like the old days. Number 12 and the last ones all seem to be trying to get more kid friendly again. They don't seem to understand how to let the show be more adult. Here in the states no one thinks Who is for kids. If it doesn't have kids in the cast then it's for teens and older. I'll just say one more time Tom Bakers Doctor was the best until number 9 ushered in the new era.

This story is kind of a defining moment in Jo's character arc before her final adventure. You kinda have to have watched all of her time since Terror of the Autons to get it, but she's a lot braver and confident than she is in her first season. The moment where she resists the Master's hypnosis via a nursery rhyme really shows the strength of her character and how much she's grown from how easily he took control of her on their first meeting. Also her venturing to go outside on her own to get help for the Doctor and survive most of the story without him and find him by herself, again compare that with how terrified she is on her first trip in Colony in Space.

The thing that sucks about Frontier in Space is that when the story is two and a half hours and most of which is spent with the Doctor and Jo just sitting in different prison cells, there's no excuse for the ending to be this cluttered and rushed, and the fact that it's the last image we get of Delgado's Master just makes me resent the story all the more

So perfectly James Bond. Sounds like perfect Third doctor fodder, and they didn't follow through? I do wonder how many times they were tasked to find a new way to make a cheap prison. Weird to go 6 episodes and have no real conclusion. Planet of the daleks part 1 was my first experience finding part one of a doctor who story after years of only ever encountering part 3 or higher. I never found part two of this as a kid though. This is long before the tv movie or the reboot. It really worked a lot better for me then some of the later episodes I'd seen. Was the lack of the invisibility for the daleks down to sharing the video mixer machine with top of the pops? Also... How are you producing so much content?!!?! You must be exhausted.

It was alright. 7/10… Idk something was lacking. Especially when the Doctor thought Jo died. No emotion whatsoever there which was out of character for the 3rd Doctor. (I blame it on his coma state from episode 1 of this serial).. ofc it was quite the remake of The Daleks from 1964.. I enjoyed it but it’s pretty forgettable. U can even tell when Pertwee is hating a serial. He stated himself he hates the Daleks and it’s showing in his acting whenever he is around a Dalek. Only thing I really loved how mature Jo was and fighted back. I even felt sorry for her. She was tired of being hunted and I understood why she wanted home after so many adventures. I was quite shocked that Jo and The 3rd Doctor didn’t interacted for TWO whole episodes. That’s insane lol

I know Frontier in Space is padded but I've personally always enjoyed the padding as its really comedic at points. I would definitely take an endearing political story with a great villian and great moments over a story with a generic atmosphere, bland sets and great villians being very basic any day. The tonal shift from Frontier to Planet is pretty much night and day in my opinion.

I don't think you quite grasp the dynamics of watching these episodes once a week, no rewatches. Something like Frontier in Space comes across a lot less tediously viewed that way. For example, the spacewalk while annoying and diversionary AF when binged....would actually be the highlight of your week.
    Suggestion:
pick a 3rd or 4th Doc story that's considered a classic that you've not seen, and watch it on a 70s tv schedule......teatime saturday, one episode, ideally with your mum asking whether you want peas or beans with your tea at some point.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who found Fruitier in Space interminably dull! The Draconians look amazing, but its..soooo....slooowwww....and by the time the Daleks show up I was still laughing at the belching beach ball. And the whole scene where the Master...shoots the Doctor? Or he falls and Jo states very hard at him? I swear that scene has always looked like it's missing footage or something. Love Planet of the Daleks, except for the ridiculous notion that the TARDIS could be smothered by something in the outer Plocie Box shell - I mean what happens when it's in space? Or on any planet without a breathable atmosphere? That is writing straight out of Rian Johnson's "How to Write Utter BullShite that Makes Zero Sense". Still an enjoyable romp for the most part, and love the collection of old style Dalek action figures as the Dalek Army! The powerful speech where the Doctor tells the Thaks to not make war seem exciting or fun for the next generation is the sort of reason and sober consideration of consequences that we desperately need in the world today. Good stuff, even when it has parachutes made from plastic wrap! :-)

You criticise this Darlek story for its lack of originality - which is fair enough I suppose in hindsight. But do try to remember that, unlike the relatively spohisticated contemporary series, 70's Doctor Who was aimed squarely at a school age/family friendly audience and those kids were mostly far too young to remember stuff that was broadcast back in 1963 - I know this because I can vividly recall watching this story on the day it was first broadcast at the age of ten. No story line is hackneyed to a kid on first exposure.
Furthermore, back in the day we obviously didn't have the internet and DVDs available to us and consequently had to consume our 'Who' literally one episode at a time on the day it was broadcast - while never expecting to be able to enjoy them again - the past is a foreign country they say. So stories that now seem obviously 'padded' when consumed in one long sitting were perhaps not quite such a laborious watch when taken in half hour instalments - as they were originally intended to be seen.
But putting a old man's grumpiness aside I do genuinely admire your deep knowledge and intelligent criticism of this wonderful old series, and if I seem a bit defensive of the Pertwee era it is only because this was very much peak 'Who' for me for all its faults ... not that 'The Demons' is anything less than perfect you understand!

Ian Warner to be fair they did spend a lot of time getting ready
Plus even early on they had tech that could keep with the TARDIS (in the Chade)
The main thing holding the Daleks back was then not focusing on a specific race (thru fought literally everything else at some point in time) and the Time Lords forbid themselves from using half their weapons early on (and they were utterly decadent from 10 million years of absolute power)

@@MrTARDIS This happens every time I click on one of your reviews. I've not listened to all of them, but I suppose after feeling fairly upbeat broadly speaking about the most recent series with the only one I didn't like being Space Babies, and finding with this channel it felt like the only one you did like was Space Babies (or at least that's how the review came across to me), I guess I just feel like we live in opposite land even though we seem to share very similar views about the world in general. I'm probably being hyperbolic, but I did come away from the last few episodes of the most recent series really fulfilled and saw that you felt the exact opposite and it kinda dampened my spirits because 90% of the Doctor Who reviews I stumble across seem to just outright hate the show now and want it to fail. So to see a show I'm enjoying being widely demolished by critics it feels like they are willing on its cancellation. I understand you just want it to be better but I feel differently and feel that a lot of critics don't seem to understand this is more polarising and isn't as objective as it is made out to be. Maybe there are some stories you like from the classic series as well but I can't think of many, but Planet of the Daleks was one of my favourites growing up and this feels like you're totally trashing it.

  • @benw4409

Honestly Planet of the Daleks is my least favourite Classic Who Dalek story. Other messy and hokey ones had interesting stuff going on but this didn't, it's one great episode followed by five episodes of complete dullness and Nation on autopilot. It's also my least favourite Pertwee as it lacks everything that makes his era great and I dare you to find a story where the leading man gives less of a shit about being in it- you could tell Pertwee HATED the Daleks. This is a weak link in the otherwise excellent Season 10, and it gives Frontier a bad rap too when that's an excellent story. The Draconians are a fascinating race, the world building and parallels to politics at the time is great and the idea of a space war brought about by giant power blocs is a brilliant concept.
