@Kaagh178 those two are next on the list on Dalekcember. Yes, I have already reviews them but that was nearly 10 years ago. They need an update and I have more to say and my opinion and outlook on them and the world in general has changed and evolved.
I choose to believe that daleks invaded planet where Doctor Who merch was produced. They hated everything on the planet and decided to at least use merch for target practice.
The silver looks far better than the grey that, somewhat ironically, dominated the color Dalek stories. The dark grey worked with the militaristic feel of Genesis but otherwise I wish they had made better use of colour and gone with silver and blue of the 60's design.
Reading the Target Novelisation felt like this was a big fun adventure with huge stakes are hand. I can now see it's just the Daleks dying for 4 parts. Even BETTER
I really love this story. It's both an atypical Pertwee and Dalek story and it does something new rather than repeat the same beats over and over again. Sarah Jane is also really really good here, one of her best stories. This is just a fun, tightly written slice of Doctor Who.
4:26 There is actually a surviving alternative take of this scene with the Daleks whispering and being mischievous but looking at that take and the final one, despite looking odd with in the final version with the Daleks shouting out their secret plans right next to the Doctor & Co, the whispering Daleks just sounds really weird and I’m really glad they went with the shouting take ruclips.net/video/9l4nDwLIhsg/видео.html

Did anyone else get a giggle with how Nation called the material being mined "Perineum"? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perineum
I often wondered if the 'floor puzzle trap' in Death to the Daleks was the inspiration behind the 'floor puzzle trap' seen in The Five Doctors, that eliminated the Cybermen..?
Both are plenty cheap, like the invisible monsters and the possessed human aliens. - and all those Star Trek aliens that had something stuck on their noses or foreheads, rather than Tellarites, those fish-head guys or movie Klingons.
This for me as a kid was one of the scariest Dalek episodes - that makes it great :) I have to disagree about the music, I think it matched perfectly with the entire "off" nature of the city and was unnerving in a unique way for the time.
I think they almost tease people with it in Dalek, before establishing that they can kill with their, for lack of a better word, plungers. It works with that story though, since the point there is that a Dalek is dangerous no matter what.
My 2nd favourite Dalek story after Genesis. I just love this one. Fantastic first episode which is actually scary - the darkness, the mist, the dead TARDIS. I was well behind the couch for this one in 1974.
Imagine if in a future dalek story they explore a dalek ship and there is cuburt full of toy tardis’s that would be funny and answer a lot of questions.
Gosh I HATE the music in this story - really took me out of the emotions of what the scenes were trying to make me feel, especially with that Dalek reveal at the end of part one...
Good incidental music should enhance a story and the emotions, not detract from it. And the music here REALLY detracts by making itself way too obvious.
You know what? After watching your dalekcember videos I actually want to check out these old classic dalek stories. Especially this one. Thanks MrTardis.
You won't be disappointed, I promise. These older ones are wonderful and inventive, just don't worry if you start to see poisonous jungle, acid swamps, destroyed cities, elements over again. Or lots of names like 'Del Tarrant' as well.
I was just waiting for your reaction to THAT cliffhanger and you did not disappoint. Should probably give this one a fairer shake when I see it again; all the silliness was too much for me on first viewing.
I could see someone who is wondering why Daleks are scary and threatening just definitely not feeling that if they see that scene where the Dalek kills itself while screaming, “I Have Failed!”
The silver daleks are looking nice and the story concept of a world without technology is at least interesting. The daleks built a tiny tardis toy?!?!?! How cuuute! I really like the human uniforms. Any modern series would be pleased with them. Wow that music.
'Death to' is one of the Dalek stories that does exactly what is says on the tin. It's short-form pulp space adventure 'our crew vs. the robots minions of a base / city' to gain their freedom, as the MaGuffin of owning super-tech city and it's knowledge is abandoned by both sides without a thought. The inverse of the 'base under siege' story, rather a 'penetrate the booby-trapped dungeon' Not Seven Samurai', but Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade'. I've always liked this one: no pretensions, silly action and utterly predictable and comforting on a cold night. It's adaptable to any SF or fantasy tabletop RPG system you like, and it's something that could even be put on stage by a school. Wonderful rubbishy delight. Even the Doctor Who tenth anniversary magazine had a short story with 'earth' / 'halldon' space crew who are the same characters discovering an alternate origin of the Daleks, and in an abandoned high-tech city, to boot.
Exilons - later re-imagined by Lucas as Ewoks. Even the big, glassy eyes are the same. I actually found the score quite scary as a kid as it's just... off, in a really alien eerie way.
I like the music in this story Carey Blyton. It’s so much more interesting then the music by Dudley Simpson in other stories at the time. If the Daleks were presented as serious and deadly as we normally see them then yes, the music wouldn’t suit them but because they are presented in this comical way, the wobbly music really suits them. You know how in recent years they have been releasing music from classic Who stories like The Daleks, The Invasion, The Krotons, The Five Doctors, The Caves of Androzani, Ghost Light and Survial, well I would love it if the BBC released all the music from this story (also Carey Blyton’s music for The Silurians).
stanley boy there’s a group of fans who have put an unofficial album together of this story. Although I can’t link it directly since the website is currently undergoing maintenance.
Blyton purposely chose to write "wobbly" music for the Daleks to depict their power-depleted state, and I like this score's quirkiness and originality. The music for the Exxilons is - um - exxilent IMHO, especially their eerie (Latin) chants.
Surely the Daleks have 3D printer tech, so they printed an appropriate target. If this had been a scene from The Chase they'd have printed out a tiny round robot.
I love death to the daleks it is my one of my favourites Jon Pertwee doctor who story and death to the daleks is my favourite daleks story from the Jon Pertwee era of doctor who
Since Dalek storylines aren’t particularly inventive in Pertwee’s era, this one was really refreshing for me. It’s a shame some of writing is a tad convoluted and the themes aren’t fully utilized. Although the Dalek deaths are fun, it felt like Nation ran out of steam a bit in the last few parts after delivering a solid beginning.
What always bothered me about Death to not he Daleks -apart from that horrendous music - was the whole story rests on power drains rendering technology uses less…yet the Daleks who also lose their ship’s owner and gun power…still roll around and blink their dome lights with no interruption at all! The Doctor saying they move by psychokinteic power- so the Daleks are psychic to the point they move their heavy cases by thought??? Then why did they need static electricity and radar dishes and shoulder slats in all other stories? This one ridiculous over site kills the story -obviously they couldnt have the Daleks in it without this enormous plot armour exception, but kills any suspension of disbelief.
I’m surprised you didn’t mention the strange blue overall lady, who behaves throughout like she’s so stoned that she’s barely connected to reality. Best moment, how she runs in and stares at the landing Dalek ship open-mouthed, like she’s seeing an angel of god descending. 13:03
If technology is useless on Exillon, how are the Daleks even functioning? Plus, in the scene where they're first revealed, the music makes me feel that they would have ridiculous smiley faces.
@@MrTARDIS Yup, not that psychokinesis was mentioned before! I imagine Terrance Dicks spotted the logical flaw on editing the script and came up with a line to cover it, or got Terry Nation to plug his own plot hole.
The first episode is one of my favorite openers to a serial. The fog, the power loss of the Tardis and the earthlings on a mission, the two civilizations and the Dalek reveal! But after that great first episode it became a mess! The Exilon were not threatening enough and vanished after episode 2/3. Daleks weren’t needed for this story at all. They should’ve given the Dalek time to the Exilon tbh. Sarah Jane didn’t had much to do during the 2nd half of the serial and we did got a damn labyrinth intelligence mystery for the Doctor to solve in that damn city that nearly took 1-2 episodes. Anticlimactic ending only the sacrifice that destroyed the Dalek ship kinda made up. But I can’t give that mess more than a 5/10
I feel like this started out with the concept of power draining planet separately from this being a Dalek story. Almost like they had general plot ideas and monsters that they draw from bags to decide what the story is going to be. Plot idea: Power Drain Planet, Monsters: Daleks. But wouldn't that make the Daleks useless, if they lose all power after landing? Ah, but they only lose their guns. How does that work? They're psychokinetic. But wouldn't that contradict them needing static electricity in the past episodes? Maybe they've mutated since then. Daleks don't change. Purity is their whole deal. Just do it. No one is going to notice. Re-runs don't exist yet.
In 'Dalek Invasion of Earth', the Daleks are powered by 'broadcast power' received in dishes on their backs. Whatever is needed for the story. Are the Daleks living creatures in armour, cyborgs or robots? All have been stated to be true, all are contradicted by other stories.
So if I'm correct: Next is on the 10th Genesis of the Daleks 11th Destiny of the Daleks 12th Resurrection of the Daleks 13th Revelation of the Daleks 14th Remembrance of the Daleks 15th Dalek 16th Bad Wolf/The Parting of Ways 17th Army of Ghosts/Doomsday 18th Daleks in Manhatten/Evolution of the Daleks 19th The Stolen Earth/Journey's End 20th Victory of the Daleks 21st Asylum of the Daleks 22nd Into the Dalek 23rd The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar 24th Resolution 25th Cameos and other stuff.
Alright, when I saw this one, I was kind of checked out after the Daleks regained their weaponry because I felt like they were squandering the idea of the Daleks having to work with the Doctor for a change. ...I kind of feel like I owe Death to the Daleks a second chance.
There is a throwaway line of dialogue that explains the Dalek casing operates on a different power source. I almost made this exact same criticism in my first draft of this review before double checking and discovering that it *technically is explained.
@@MrTARDIS hey thanks for that response. I knew there was a logical reason. 🙄 I guess their weapons didn't operate on this same power because of - reasons.... Great review by the way. Jon pertwee was my 2nd favorite Doctor after Tom Baker.
Interesting take on what I'd argue is the second best Dalek serial of the Pertwee era. I think your reaction to this one is how I feel watching Planet of the Spiders and Robot back to back. Spiders feels long and drawn out while Robot feels like a breeze at four episodes. And I go back and forth on the incidental music. I keep wanting to like it and I think it's fun to see Doctor Who pushing the boundaries a bit. But I think it violates the one rule of incidental music in that it draws too much attention to itself. There is a fine line between being vanilla and overly noticeable.
Wait a minute, perineum?! Erm... did Terry Nation know what a perineum is? It's, uhh... well, anatomically speaking, it's everything between a person's genitals and their butthole. That's what a perineum is.
Only now as an adult I know that perineum is the medical term for the area between a scrotum and the anus. I wonder if Terry knew this back when this was produced.
In the clip I played where they're all talking about how they need to keep their true intentions a secret, you can actually hear Wisher catching his breath between Dalek voices as he swaps between them.
I'm starting to wonder if I don't like the Daleks as this is one of the Dalek stories I really liked. I saw this one after Power of the Daleks and I can say one of them knew what Daleks were, one of them did not. The one by Terry Nation knew what they were? What are the odds of that? They're not as scheming here as in Power? That's... no, not at all. Power: "Here's an unwatched lab where you can manufacture all the Daleks you want... whatever that means." How can they be really scheming away in Power when the humans were idiots? Power is one of those stories that really makes me wonder why it's so popular... just as Death makes me wonder why it's so unpopular it has to be a "guilty pleasure".
Hi, I asked this question on one of your previous facebook posts, but what are you going to do when you get to the Dalek stories you've already done full reviews for (e.g. Genesis, Victory, Destiny, Asylum etc)?
I've answered this question before (though it might not have been your question specifically). They will also get reviews. Tomorrow and the day after will be Genesis then Destiny.
The Mythbusters tried to sink model boats floating on water with air bubbles from the underside, and there need to be so many bubbles that there wasn't any water before it began to happen. Basically, replacing the water with air caused to boat fall, not sink.
I like the Daleks as a genuine threat, they're my favourite enemy of the show, so the Daleks being this laughably pathetic does hinder my enjoyment a bit.
By this point I feel exhausted with the Daleks during the 70‘s. They get worse with every new appearance tbh. It’s my first time DW watch going on chronological but I know they will be back and maybe with a better story like in the 60‘s..
This IMO is the last ever awesome Dalek story owing to the fact we get the dreaeded Davros creator of the Daleks and he screws up the concept of the Daleks
I actually really enjoyed this episode. Probably wasn’t the most well written but it was still fun to watch. Can’t say that about Chibnall’s run on Doctor Who. It was satisfying seeing the Daleks adapt and conquer after one was destroyed by being hit with a bunch of rocks.

In the clip I played where they're all talking about how they need to keep their true intentions a secret, you can actually hear Wisher catching his breath between Dalek voices as he swaps between them.
wow when the exalons attacked that dalek they sounded like Tarazan
One of my all-time favorites!
Make more plz, I don’t know why you have a small following. You do so good
I like Death to the Daleks
Belial almost could have been a companion.
Not a great story but this is easily my favourite dalek colour scheme
Mr tardis which is your favourite episodes of the entire CLASSIC series and why is it your favourite????
The Power Outage Of The Daleks
Great analysis
Wait, they’re mining “perineum”? They.... DO know what that word means, right?
11:04 I swear I've heard something similar to that but I cannot think what it is
Samuel Bastable “needs of the many outway the needs of the few”? It’s said in Star Trek
@@BH-98 not exactly what I was thinking.
5:42 It's called Orac.
It's similar to Orac, but with fewer bits and pieces inside.
Fun fact - the Dr says you can`t sink in the planet`s water because it is effervescent, actually because of the bubbles you`d sink like a stone.
Secretly hate them? He made them villains!
i like this one its a lot of fun
This story is hilariously done I love it
Personally, I prefer the planet of the daleks out of the Pertwee dalek stories
The exxilon city one of the 700 wonders of the universe to bad the Doctors blows it up.
It melts the moment the power collector is broken.
Self-repair systems need batteries, I expect.
@1:39 Um, did you just say the Daleks were "after the perineum"? Oh, my.
Parrinium in the script. Wonder if that nice Professor Parry named it? - after his change from Archaeology to Geology, that is.
The music really detracts from this story.
superb story
To break this moment this sort of gives me old 1966 Star Trek vibes
9:24
I am not a fan of this serial as I think I’m too young to get the subtleties of it.
There’s no dalek school lol
This IMO is the last ever awesome Dalek story owing to the fact we get the dreaeded Davros creator of the Daleks and he screws up the concept of the Daleks
The Daleks become mere props.
I really can't get behind this story.
It's very boring and the music doesn't work at all.
