I really didn't give this story enough credit. It's such a fun ride even with all the cop-outs that Journey's End suffered from, and despite their defeat feeling like a deus ex machina, the Daleks felt like a really serious threat. That said, I did enjoy the story you're reviewing next... Heck, you enjoyed it so much you're reviewing it thrice!

I have wonderful, vivid memories of this story. It's impossible, to this day, for me to view it completely objectively. I know it's a mess, I know the deus ex machina is awful, I know it represents and accentuates the faults of the RTD era but to me, this was the biggest, best and craziest thing that had ever happened to the show. My two favourite shows (DW and SJA) crossing over and battling Daleks, combining basically every aspect of the past 4 years into an orgy of excitement, made me so excited eleven years ago and I still find myself enjoying myself just thinking about it. Harper's outstanding direction, the epic Dalek music by Murray Gold, the sheer scale and ambition to rival Master Plan... I love this story, faults and all. The ridiculous, camp nature of Journey's End is partially WHY I love it TBH. It's not one of my favourite stories, but it's one of the stories I remember the most and one I still consider quite special to me.
I honestly recommend reading the segments from The Writer’s Tale about these episodes. It’s just... sheer chaos. Schedules all over the place, major sequences being cut (Davros’s origin, the assassination of the Prime Minister, HUGE monster cameos at the Shadow Proclamation), even the ending was famously reshot. Before Journey’s End was given an extra thirty minutes, RTD was really struggling over what to cut out; interesting you noted that scene with Sarah and Davros, as that was nearly cut for time, and it almost broke his heart. It’s a miracle this whole thing turned out as well as it did. It’s hard for me to be critical of this one though, as I was ten at the time, which is the perfect age to be watching this show. This universe felt so massive at the time, and I couldn’t feel more grateful for it. I would love it to feel this big again someday. Also, I nearly wet myself at the “friends we made along the way” gag, nice job.

So, Rose denies herself the life she, deep down, really wants just so the Doctor won’t be alone. I don’t care what you say, that is noble. Also, it’s shown Rose can talk to the alt Torchwood, though you could argue that’s because of the walls of the universes being weak. But even then it’s indicated when Rose and Jackie meet that they did have a talk, and Rose evidently won it. It’s just because Jackie is Jackie and Mickey is Mickey that they end up following her. 7:42 I think that their guns is the least of Torchwood's issues. 12:24 I'm surprised that the Doctor never told Rose about that at any point offscreen before the events of Doomsday, especially how in that episode she tells Dalek Sec that she was the one to destroy the Dalek Emperor by looking into the heart of the TARDIS. Also related to the huge amount of continuity in these episodes (which I really like after binging through Torchwood) is how Jack says "Martha Jones, voice of a nightingale." before the Daleks are revealed as a reference to how he introduced her when she first appeared in Torchwood season 2.

The only hint is that Captain Jack recognized Martha, which implies Martha came after Rose as both Rose and the Doctor met Captain Jack together. There's a certain finality to this. The Daleks and Davros are at the most powerful in the RTD era, had finally developed a weapon that could remove all other life, and their downfall was orchestrated by an omniscient, repentant Caan
This for me is by far my favourite episode of the RTD era it is just amazing so many things I love about this episode and yes it's not the strongest 2 parter of the New who era it is still a great piece of nostalgia for my heart because I remember a younger me in 2008 watching this with my dad and loving it so much. I love how it brings all the companions back from previous series and them all helping each other to stop an evil threat that threatens reality itself. Love all the character appearances in this two parter such as the Sarah Jane adventures crew loved that as I used to watch it when I was a kid and the torchwood crew also watched some of it with my dad my favourites being Gwen ianto and jack. The ending with the tardis crew pulling the earth back to its home with the song of freedom playing in the background pulls at my heart strings every time this was a perfect way to end season 4 arguably still the best time of Tennant' s era as the doctor. I even don't really mind rose in this story line I mean I still hate how she of Martha but she isn't as bad as she was in series 2. I cry every time I watch this Because we have to say goodbye to Donna who is my favourite companion of the 10th doctors era. I also love julian bleach's performance as Davros in this story as I think he nails the character brilliantly being a mix of the molloy and Wisher Davroses. Overall I bloody love this episode and always will xx
Really loved that down played version of the Reality Bomb speech. Was actually incredibly sinister, and I have to admit the takes we did get have ended up becoming pretty memeable.
I actually liked the fact that the companions were all captured and everyone was made to look useless and defeated, even someone as smart as Luke or as powerful as Jack because at the same time it makes the Daleks look even more formidable and powerful. More often than not, the Daleks are made weak by plot devices, always getting defeated or outsmarted by regular humans which does a lot to diminish their image to the point where people tend to forget that even a regular Dalek drone is a super-genius capable of rivalling a timelord in terms of intellect and with the firepower to level a city and take over a planet on its own. So the companion's swift defeat and capture really bring back that terrifying side of The Daleks that we haven't quite seen since the episode titled "Dalek" and to an extent in "Doomsday".
No matter what I or anyone else thinks about the episodes as a whole, that Dalek reveal (whilst hardly a shock because of poorly-made teasers for the episode) was still the most intimidating and scary Dalek reveal ever. The reactions from Sarah Jane and Captain Jack were spine-tingling. Also I know it wasn't shown in these episodes but the Dalek not being able to kill Adelaide Brooke because of the fixed point in time stuff was actually an interesting scene.
I was surprised when you said that series 4 was the most viewed series of New Who, because most people I know in real life are most familiar with series 2.
Torchwood series 1 was on bbc 3. But it was massively popular so it was moved too bbc 2 and the later bbc 1. The Sarah Jane adventures was on cbbc but invasion of the bane was on bbc 1
7:57 ...you don't find it satisfying that Rose is jealous of Martha for once? Russell literally wrote that exchange to acknowledges the feelings of you and other critics of Rose. I'd have thought that would have been the one scene of Rose which you appreciated.
And I do agree about Rose's departure - she gets literally everything she wants. In fairness, perhaps Russell wants us to ask "why couldn't Donna have the same happy ending?" Perhaps he's acknowledging that Donna is in many ways...well I won't start an argument.
well techniqually donna did die, the donna that had grown over the entire of series 4 to be a better person. So Cann wasn't lying, from a certain point of view.
At 15:43 I wish there was a scene where davros asked the doctor about the conversation that there had in genesis where the fourth doctor asked davros about a virus that would destroy all life in the universe and davros would say that the reality bomb was his version of that virus
Murray Gold's music really sells this story for me. This was the first story I decided to watch when I got the series 1-4 DVD box set. The music, and the characters' reactions to simply the words "Exterminate." really makes it feel hopeless. Imagine this story with ambient music and we didn't get those reactions, it wouldn't have the same impact. It would just feel like another cookie cutter Dalek tale.
kiarash608 Oh, you got that from The Evil Of The Daleks! I was actually expecting Madonna's Into The Groove, Kylie Minogue's Spinning Around or the Spice Girls' Who Do You Think You Are.
Spunky, yes. Self-centred, no. Let’s not forget this is the same woman who gave the Doctor, a man she’d just met, permission to fire a missile at her if it meant that her family and the rest of the world would be safe. Just saying.
I LOVE this story. It's so epic. And I love seeing all the companion come together for one last adventure. And the end of Harriet's Jones's arc is wonderful. The Doctor was so wrong about her. I started Doctor Who catching the last few minutes of Silence in the Library, so this was one of the easier episodes I saw. And I was an adult by this point. But still, even then, when I didn't really know about many of these characters, I thought it was great, and it's only better with more knowledge. Sure it's got issues but I don't care.
While this story has problems, I still love it. It was a brave attempt to do what was basically Endgame a decade early. I enjoy watching this story and that's what counts.
Oh man I've been waiting for this. I was so excited when these episodes aired when I was a little 10 year old watching in excitement and fear for what would happen
If we got an extra episode to give the other characters like the spin off gangs and the children of time more to do, would it have worked better? And if you think so, which episode of Series 4 would you have cut to make way for the extra episode?
You know what? I appreciate this story a lot more than I did when I was younger. As an edgy teenager, I liked to scoff and laugh and go, "Ooh! this story is rubbish! Why would the Daleks put a control panel for all their casings in their dungeon?! Look at all the cop-outs! Nyeeehhh!" As an adult, though, I get the need for compromises. I get why Journey's End, as you say, buckles under its own weight. It's trying to be closure for four seasons and four years of storytelling and roughly a dozen characters are all competing for screen time and relevance. The build up of The Stolen Earth is fantastic and truly shows the Daleks at their most terrifying as they almost effortlessly destroy Earth's defenses and enslave the populace. Davros is fun and has a lot of presence without stealing the spotlight for the Daleks. Dalek Caan's conclusion feels like a fitting end to the Cult of Skaro as he too comes to a similar but not identical realization to Dalek Sec. Each of the main characters, the ones who originated on Doctor Who, has at least one fun and memorable moment. Even characters like Rose whom I don't care for come to what feels like a fitting end. It's a solid story, and it would be the last time until over a decade later that the Daleks were truly depicted as a serious threat to the universe.
The Ostahargon Key and Warp star really feel like unfired Chekov Gun's. Wouldn't it have made more sense to usr the two devices to rig together a machine that would destroy all the daleks with davros's DNA signature. Rather than just press 'that button there' have all 3 doctors work on it or something.
About the Rose thing I agree Rose could be a little self centered but she still risked her life over and over again to save the planet and the doctor. She was also really compassionate and if it weren't for her warning Donna in turn left the earth would have been destroyed by the Daleks. You are entitled to your opinions of course but I feel like at this point people just look for reasons to hate her.
My question is this.. How did Darvos get the robotic hand?! There’s no explanation of how he got it since in Revelation his hand got literally shot off, So it seems a bit underwhelming.
I would've had no issues if this was where the RTD era ended. Hell, just add a regeneration at the end into Matt Smith and tie the Master in somehow it could be.
The most ambitious and epic crossover of the main series with its spin-offs (almost). This truly was when Doctor Who was at its peak and that cliffhanger... Wow just wow. Unfortunately Journey's End doesn't quite stick the landing. I can't help wonder what would'v happened had Tennant actually left here 🤔
His journey through the Time vortex into the Time War turned him insane and opened his eyes (eye?) to what the Daleks really were. Plus he saw it was their destiny to be wiped out
I do have it saved on my computer as I'm the one who filmed the footage you see in the video, but I've not made it live. I've not asked permission from any parties involved for a full upload so I don't know if I can upload it.
14:41- it's my favourite villain speech, but it does kinda annoy me how the actor has to really stretch his prosthetic to get some emotion through. It's great acting and a great prosthetic, but I might have preferred a happy medium so he could have gotten even more out of the monologue.
My biggest problem with this episode is that everyone and their mother has an anti-Dalek deus-ex-machina cannon that completely removes the threat that the Daleks presented in previous Russell-era stories.
I love this story, but the bonkers, Deus-Ex-Machina ending kinda... I don’t want to say it ruins it, But definitely lessens the effect, especially for the Daleks themselves. Seeing a massive empire be destroyed at the literal touch of a button kind of lessens the threat and stakes for when they inevitably show up again.
Whilst I get your point about Davros’s moral victory over the Doctor, that’s the viewers’ perspective. In same way that insulting someone’s friends and family hurts, true or not from the Doctor’s POV it hurts to contemplate the idea. Davros claiming the victory is merely rubbing salt in the wound.
I suspect Davros is not claiming moral victory, mearly more arguing that he and the doctor are not so different. Davros is evil because he created a race of murderers, Davros is arguing that the Doctor is similar. He's wrong, like you said, but he knows it will affect the doctor and Davros' belief is that his race of Daleks are the same, acting in self-defence because they must dominate or die. Murderer would be the doctor's word and Davros is using it.
Personally might have been better if the warp star was used to destroy the Daleks. Then it would have felt less like dead weight. Or Double-Doctor died defeating the Daleks. Still glad they cut out the grow your own TARDIS, as that would have been a bit much and I personally feel cheapens the TARDIS a bit to say u can just grow one in a few years.
You were wrong when you said the story would not change if Rose wasn't there - if the doctor had not been exterminated while running to greet her, the meta-crisis would have never happened and Donna and Metacrisis doctor would have not destroyed the Daleks, and the Daleks would have basically destroyed reality. Still a great review, thanks for taking your time to make it! :)
It's weird how many comparisons can be made between this story and the Flux arc (especially "Once, Upon Time") and how strong those episodes are compared to this one... And yet this story is a fan favourite despite almost entirely relying on nostalgia.
If you mean the doctor Robin Donna Noble of her memory then yes I would say that's wrong but death I don't really think that was would have been the case or maybe it would have I don't know but I still think it was wrong
Could be wrong but in the episode Dalek the doctor and rose travel to 2012 where the Daleks species is unidentified and is named metaltron how did Van Statton not recognize them since they invaded earth in 2006 in doomsday and 2008 in the stolen earth/ journeys end, the only possible solution is that the planets memory was altered in the same way as amy pond in season 5 however as far as I’m aware it was only her who’s memory was altered, could be wrong please respond if you have any evidence to cover up this plot hole
Changing timelines, crack in time, the master reversing earth, unit putting stuff in the water to make people forget, big bang 2. Take any of these excuses and see which one you prefer lol
The first video of Dalekcember I watched I thought the man saying "Our battlecry will be"at 0:00-0:02 was the eleventh doctor Matt Smith cause in that moment they sound so alike (I know it isn't because I've seen that episode its from) but does anyone else think so or is it just me?
I don't like Russell's attempt to make the connection between this storynand the Dalek Invasion of Earth it's so paper thin but it's what makes the Doctor know its the Daleks

Overall I bloody love this episode and always will xx
The Doctor hearing the Tardis sound which brings hope was bloody awesome. It was awesome in Day of the Doctor and in this clone onel
Really loved that down played version of the Reality Bomb speech. Was actually incredibly sinister, and I have to admit the takes we did get have ended up becoming pretty memeable.
This story feels like Doctor Who: Infinity War
Next Time, The Underrated One
Victory of the Daleks? I agree. Very underrated
I wasn’t a fan of that episode generally, but I adore the “no, we created you” twist
And the underrated five.
@@DalekTheSupreme I know MrTardis began his reviewing DW with this. And then did another review. Ill watch them all tomorrow.
Is the sequel to this going to be cybercember or demastercember
6:42 what an absolute mad lad throwing a brick
My new favorite character scared man (yes really that’s his name in the credits)
Well I’m sure will ‘NNEEVVEERR’ see Darvos again.
14:14 the Supreme Dalek did say "[the doctor and Rose] are the playthings of Davros now"
Also how would Davros even do stuff like that seeing as he is basically a decaying chest and a head at this point.
@@Jedi_Spartan hes got a mouth hasnt he...
And we dont know Davors didnt use his plunger up...
I Love this Story Is Actually My Favorite Episode of the Modern Era
With both Episodes Being 10/10
Did you know Donna nobles gran-dad is the police officer from Daleks invasion earth 2150ad staring Peter Cushing
Well done. You are providing much needed reprieve from the bushfires in Australia ❤️
*please* make a full version of that too many cooks gag
I love it
Torchwood series 1 was on bbc 3.
Absolutely loving this series! Would love to see a Cybermen Month!
Dossyd If it took place in March then it would be called ‘March of the Cybermen.’
@@nickbrough8335 I came from the future 😂😂
This was my introduction to Davros
well techniqually donna did die, the donna that had grown over the entire of series 4 to be a better person.
21:39 Dizzy, dizzy, dizzy Daleks, dizzzzzy Daleks
A, B and O.
kiarash608 Oh, you got that from The Evil Of The Daleks! I was actually expecting Madonna's Into The Groove, Kylie Minogue's Spinning Around or the Spice Girls' Who Do You Think You Are.
21:39 I was expecting Madonna's Into The Groove.
What???!!!!
@9:00 obviously I appreciate that reference 😂
This series not only fuels my Dr Who Nostalgia but also my MrTardis nostalgia from the early ‘10s
Love or hate Rose, she starts off as self-centered and spunky in series 1 and never loses those traits for 4 seasons and for that I respect her.
Spunky, yes. Self-centred, no.
Let’s not forget this is the same woman who gave the Doctor, a man she’d just met, permission to fire a missile at her if it meant that her family and the rest of the world would be safe. Just saying.
23:06 You mean the ends justify the means.
"Harriet Jones, former Prime Minister!"
_"Yes! We know who you are!"_ ~ The Daleks
While this story has problems, I still love it. It was a brave attempt to do what was basically Endgame a decade early. I enjoy watching this story and that's what counts.
Great video man! Any chance you could help me out and let me know where you sourced the Graeme Harper panel? I'd love to see the full thing!
Oh man I've been waiting for this. I was so excited when these episodes aired when I was a little 10 year old watching in excitement and fear for what would happen
Thank you for that Cell reference it made my day lololololol.
Nyeeehhh!"
As an adult, though, I get the need for compromises.
Ooooo, here come the Paradigm Daleks!
This one moreso makes me wonder where you’re leaving Dalekcember off at. In Moffat’s run there’s a lot of Dalek appearances in non-Dalek stories.
I think the genius who created the daleks can make himself a robot hand.
Dylan Humphrey How? He was pretty much ‘disarmed’ at that point.
26:00 You tell him, Harry.
"NOW ACTIVATE, THE REALITY BOMB!"
I would've had no issues if this was where the RTD era ended. Hell, just add a regeneration at the end into Matt Smith and tie the Master in somehow it could be.
Next Time: Daleks, World War Two.. TO VICTORY!
The most ambitious and epic crossover of the main series with its spin-offs (almost). This truly was when Doctor Who was at its peak and that cliffhanger...
Wow just wow. Unfortunately Journey's End doesn't quite stick the landing. I can't help wonder what would'v happened had Tennant actually left here 🤔
Caan brought the Daleks back from extinction then decided that they should be extinct
There is a fan-video which gives a sort of... timey-wimey explanation for this. ruclips.net/video/5MF4W-q768Q/видео.html
His journey through the Time vortex into the Time War turned him insane and opened his eyes (eye?) to what the Daleks really were. Plus he saw it was their destiny to be wiped out
Mr Tardis, do you have a link to the Warped con panel in full? Been pulling my hair out looking for it on YT!
I do have it saved on my computer as I'm the one who filmed the footage you see in the video, but I've not made it live.
I've not asked permission from any parties involved for a full upload so I don't know if I can upload it.
Great review I remember proper goosebumps watching this when it came out l, happy memories
14:41- it's my favourite villain speech, but it does kinda annoy me how the actor has to really stretch his prosthetic to get some emotion through. It's great acting and a great prosthetic, but I might have preferred a happy medium so he could have gotten even more out of the monologue.
Imagine if the Torchwood team fought off Daleks with Luke on Bannerman road? That would kill two birds with one stone.
This was honestly one of my favourite Dalek episodes ever the reactions, crossovers and callbacks are incredible
The Doctor who version of endgame XD
will you cover the two Dalek movies?
But, if Rose wasn't there, Wilf would have died.
Where was Ace?
Everyone except rose my arse
Time war happen she died
In the thumbnail you can see the media bar from your computer
Now I want to see a Cybercember
Maybe the real Doctor Who was the friends we've made along the way.
Maybe the REAL friends were The Doctors we made along the way.
The first video of Dalekcember I watched I thought the man saying "Our battlecry will be"at 0:00-0:02 was the eleventh doctor Matt Smith cause in that moment they sound so alike (I know it isn't because I've seen that episode its from) but does anyone else think so or is it just me?
why does the thumbnail have the media player lol
I don't like Russell's attempt to make the connection between this storynand the Dalek Invasion of Earth it's so paper thin but it's what makes the Doctor know its the Daleks
This is the one I was waiting for!!!!
Immediate 10/10 for the Sammy J and Randy sound bite.
oh i completely missed the daleks destroy the valiant
