- As the manhunt continues for the Clapham chemical attack suspect Abdul Ezedi, James O'Brien delves into the origins of his story, including the fact he's a registered sex offender.
Another fact that has come to light is that Abdul converted to Christianity which was the reason he was granted asylum in the UK. This has sparked considerable outcry from former Home Secretaries Suella Braverman and Priti Patel, but James isn't particularly convinced they've got much ground to stand on.

It matters because in some countries, according to Islamic Law a muslim who rennounces his faith (apostate) is punishable by death, imprisonment etc. The potential for this persecution upon any return forms a basis for an asylum claim.

The difference is that some religious people do awful things IN THE NAME OF their religion.
The non-religious, I suppose, can be equally immoral, but I find it hard to conceive of an immoral act that can be committed DIRECTLY BECAUSE of an absence of faith.

Braverman did a disgusting interview very recently trying to make out she was the wonderful guardian angel of immigrants. Her nickname of 'Cruella' will never be forgotten, nor will the reason she earned that name. Her performance in the hearing was a national disgrace, totally opposed to deeply held English principles of caring for and helping the less fortunate, Even non Christians show compassion and love in its widest sense.

Spot on. I decided a long time ago that religion is a form of insanity. Religion is now all about bigotry and hared. I've completely lost any patience in religion.
Well it's not even that they're the worst offenders necessarily. It's that their backs are covered in a way that the secular world isnt which permits all manner of wrongdoing to go unchecked. Unaccountable for reasons that if we were to really give it due consideration would be based on ideas that don't hold any weight in small cults but because organised, institutionalised religions began before civil society really established itself they're exempt from the same scrutiny. Their argument is 'we believe we are somehow superior in all facets, that is what we believe and don't you dare challenge us'. They can dress it up as sweet as they like but they are based on really destructive, alienating, duplicitous, coercive and corrupt tenets. They are businesses that profit from their followers. They always have been, but once again are exempt from due process. Of course they're going to attract wrongdoers. They've set up a structure that's better than a private island for harbouring the people with the worst intentions.

But then the problem with that is the holy handbook that exists to give guidance contains within it some most unchristian direction. Plus when they do get to the point of applying, Braverman and Patel have made it so the application has to be completed online and in English… some asylum seekers do not have access to technology nor do they have the opportunity to learn English before they come, especially if they have to flee in the middle of the night. About immigration I have so much to say,
In new days of my arrival in the UK an English guy tried to tell me why we immigrants are coming here. He said there is. O housing no enough doctors etc. I told him why you came to my country with guns and destroyed our land now you hate us as immigrants caused by you and your government actions. He silenced and left.
At the same time I stopped by one of the elections awareness post in city centre talking and posting about immigrants. I told those party agent how you lr focus is on the most vulnerable and defenseless people with a lot of suffering. I asked them to focus on something noble and that matters to people which we all know there are a lot

WHY!
Advertising one’s faith is counter productive. For a start, it’s impossible to reason your way to faith. By definition, if you could reason it then we wouldn’t have countless hundreds of religions, never mind 40k+ Christian denominations! As public discourse of the kind in which James engages is entirely driven by reason then anything which flies in its face must lay the person advancing the case open to question. Plus, as James points out people who advertise their faith are almost always the worst offenders of the tenets of that faith. Politicians in the US love to advertise their faith, and indeed would not be elected if they didn’t, so hypocritical is the culture there, whereas we’ve nearly succeeded in the UK in making people ashamed to mention faith. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t allowed your private beliefs, but the word ‘private’ is there for a reason.
This is indeed American in nature.
