    Changing the accent like that is called code switching, so you mirror different class accents rather than regional ones

    • @deadbynightupbylunch
      @deadbynightupbylunch 10 месяцев назад +8

      I’ve seen it happen with people who are bilingual. My friend speaks normal English with me but when he’s talking with his Ukrainian wife, his accent completely changes.

    • @padmelotus
      @padmelotus 10 месяцев назад +5

      Yup. And code switching can also be about class, sexuality, gender or nationality.

    • @volundrfrey896
      @volundrfrey896 10 месяцев назад +2

      Switching between accents or languages in a single conversation or situation is code switching.
      The act of mirroring someone else's accent or speech patterns is echolalia.
      So yeah what moss did is code switching, but what they talked about is echolalia. People often confuse the two.

    You'd be surprised how easy it is to drive on the opposite side of the road. People in the UK often take their cars over to Europe and drive on the right in their vehicles which are designed to drive on the left. Even then, it's really not a problem. If you came to the UK and hired a car you'd get used to it within half an hour of driving.

    i've done the whole 'fit in with other people' thing. in year 7 (12-13 years old) all my friends started smoking, all they wanted to do was go out behind the science block and smoke, I hung around for a bit, bored out of my brain because all they wanted to talk about was smoking and I was not at all interested in smoking. they started talking about trying to get some pot, that's when I decided to make my exit and make friends with the people who are now my best mates some 20 years later. I went from hanging around, trying to fit in with smokers to hanging around with 'nerds', which I am now one of and have been for 20 years.
    while all my old mates have gone massively down hill. 1 overdosed, a couple of others are on meth and one that has recently became clean contacted me and apologised for not listening to me when I told him (at 13) that this really wasn't a good path to be going down.

    If you're nervous about driving in a UK city, DO NOT try driving on UK country roads. They are far more dangerous, very narrow and surrounded by hedges that will tank a car going 90mph and not lose a pebble over it. Honestly down here in Cornwall if you see a car with it's entire front end destroyed you simply ask "hedge?" and 99% of the time you'll be told yes. Edit: Sorry Queen Boomer Kings right on this one, no man really cares about a pumpkin patch. If we go it's to keep the peace but we do not like or respect the pictures taken.

      100% correct with the country roads thing, they're fun as hell if you're familiar with them but if you're used to wide lanes on straight roads AND you're adapting to changing which side of the road you're driving on then you'll end up either crashing, shitting yourself or driving 30mph to be safe but have some muppet in a BMW or 4x4 up your arse (or some interesting combo of all 3).

    IT Crowd 👋Football is our national sport and obsession. There are no stereotypical fans, it's a worldwide phenomenon, from very little kids to women, to older fans to Ultras. It's a very wide range.

      It's certainly the most popular sport in the UK & world, but there are also millions of Brits who have little or no interest in it, including many who aren't into sport at all.

      There are stereotypical fans. It's macho and aggressive, which is why some people hate it.

      Unfortunately there are stereotypical fans. They’ll be the ones who stagger up my street in droves pissing in strangers’ doorways and yelling sectarian chants

    As someone who loves Halloween and festive stuff in my community, I like pumpkin patches. I think a lot of fall tropes have been co-opted by girls on social media, like pumpkin spice, apple picking, even haunted houses to an extent. But really, life can get so monotonous that I enjoy the various seasonal traditions, even if they are considered basic now.

    Hating football is like hating The Beatles. It's magnified by the majorities love for it. A general dislike of it is distilled into hate by the constant coverage, conversations you get excluded from and the general unlikeability of everyone involved with it.

    No segment of TV reflects my disinterest with football (or sports in general) as that scene with Roy and Moss as the football ground. Yes that guy has kicked the ball. Now that guy kicks it. Why would that ever be interesting? 🙂
    I love this episode.

    My dad wasn’t a magician but he could show that his trouser pockets were empty and he had nothing in his hands, then he’d put his hands in his pockets and when he took them out they’d smell of cheese…I don’t know how he did it.

    Queen Boomer is correct about the accent thing. My wife is Australian and I'm Scottish and we have both picked up each other's words/accents. Just being around each other all the time, similar to work colleagues, you pick up on and mimic each other.

  • @Ohmz27
    @Ohmz27 8 месяцев назад +1

    Mate if driving on the left makes you queasy then British country roads are not where you should to aim to familiarise yourself with the system lol. Many are high speed, narrow and pretty bendy with undulations and grit patches. Also just a fun bit of trivia, the reason we drive on the left stems from Medieval times where most people would have had the advantage of defending themselves with their dominant (right) hand if they were ever attacked on horseback on the road. The attackers would need toc ome up on the victims' right, and use their left hand to attack/defend, and the left hand for most people is the off-hand.
