    This was his encore.
After he'd sworn never to sing that song again, he walked off the stage.
The crowd wanted to, both, applaud him for his principled stand AND sing it. He then came out in that headdress and sang the song with gusto.
He knew exactly what his audience wanted and gave it to them.

@@groofay that's the kind of comedy that's missing in today's world. Simple set ups for simple payoffs. I wish I could give simple examples of modern things doing it but I draw a blank. Aunty Donna do stuff like that. American Dad! After like season 4 when Seth MacFarlane stopped writing them and only acting in them have some fantastic gags like this. Anyone now a days it's way too much setup for a maybe moment of a funny joke. I miss guys like Lenny Bruce and that style of comic.

For all who may be too young to know: Henry Winkler - the guy holding the illustration behind Steve - was the biggest TV star of the 70s.
He's still going. He had a great role as the hopelessly inept lawyer, Barry Zuckerkorn, on Arrested Development.

I used to be a proud mother of 3 and I showed this video to each one of my children when they were very young and they loved it too! After they all died in the fire I could only find solace in the fact that at least we had this to share together and now I watch this video and listen to the song just about every day to remember them!

I was surprised to see so many negative comments about this... and then I saw they all came from one person. Just because you don't like this humor or get it, doesn't mean it's pathetic. The song is absurd, and catchy. No one should compare him to George Carlin, he's Steve Martin and his fans aren't sheeple. It's ignorant of you to throw stones in an attempt to be a so called non-conformist.

So growing up in the 90s early 2000s Steve Martin was a household name. My older brother would laugh and dance to this song, much to our family's amusement and delight. I remember asking if "King Tut was still alive", and hence began my true education on Egyptian history. All thanks to this song. Thank you Steve Martin, for caring about my education. I would have been an ignorant twerp otherwise.

On this day in 1978 {April 22nd} Steve Martin performed "King Tut" on the NBC-TV program 'Saturday Night Live'...
One month later on May 21st, 1978 "King Tut" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #89; eleven weeks later it would peak at #17 {for 2 weeks} and it spent 15 weeks on the Top 100...
He had two other Top 100 records; ""Grandmother's Song" {#72 in 1977} and "Cruel Shoes" {#91 in 1979}...
In 2009 Mr. Martin released an album titled 'The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo', the album won the Grammy Award for 'Best Bluegrass Album'...

Back in the late 70's / early 80's, I laughed at this man more than I had ever laughed at anyone before or since. He was a nut. I later found out that he was a writer on several shows that I had liked. My Aunt Bernice loved "The Jerk". I stumbled on that one while working out of town in Athens. Inhibited at the time to even be noticed by people, I was laughing out loud, sometimes even a little more than the other people, and I was sitting in the middle of the theatre, no one with me. That movie freed my spirit in a way that day. Thanks, Steve.

Actually this is better than the full-costume version. He's enunciating more carefully here, and you can get every word.

I still remember the night he did it on SNL. Laughed so hard and so long. This may be my favorite comedy skit ever. Just so much fun.

I remember a lot of humor back then. Humor was popular and you could laugh at everything. Barriers fell and humor was better and if someone chose to be offended then too bad for them. Monty Python, Mel Brooks films, Firesign Theater, and Steve Martin (he is a top banjo player also), Frank Zappa's ribald rock,...Those were the days. Now we have mind control call "political correctness". I do not practice PC.

On this day in 1922 {November 4th} archaeologist Howard Carter, in the Valley of Kings, discovered the lost tomb of 14th-century B.C. Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamen...
And fifty-six years later on May 21st, 1978 "King Tut" by Steven Martin entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #89; and eleven weeks later on August 6th, 1978 it peaked at #17 {for 2 weeks} and spent 15 weeks on the Top 100...
He had two other Top 100 records; "Grandmother's Song" {peaked at #72 in 1977} and "Cruel Shoes" {reached #91 in 1979}...
Stephen Glenn Martin celebrated his 69th birthday three months ago on August 14th {2014}...
