This was his encore. After he'd sworn never to sing that song again, he walked off the stage. The crowd wanted to, both, applaud him for his principled stand AND sing it. He then came out in that headdress and sang the song with gusto. He knew exactly what his audience wanted and gave it to them.
@@groofay that's the kind of comedy that's missing in today's world. Simple set ups for simple payoffs. I wish I could give simple examples of modern things doing it but I draw a blank. For all who may be too young to know: Henry Winkler - the guy holding the illustration behind Steve - was the biggest TV star of the 70s. He's still going. He had a great role as the hopelessly inept lawyer, Barry Zuckerkorn, on Arrested Development.
A good question that should be directed at college students all over North America who find it offensive. Of course, they'll just scream "cultural appropriation!" and try to beat you to death with a hammer and sickle, so maybe it's better not to ask.
I first saw this when I was just seven years old and it's still as funny today as it was back then! I used to be a proud mother of 3 and I showed this video to each one of my children when they were very young and they loved it too! After they all died in the fire I could only find solace in the fact that at least we had this to share together and now I watch this video and listen to the song just about every day to remember them!
This guy is such a talent. I was 17 in 1979, and Steve Martin was HUGE. I am still a big fan. He is also a very accomplished banjo player! Happy Birthday Steve Martin! You are loved.
345 people with no sense of humor whatsoever.. Hysterical song and performance by the wickedly funny Steve M. Whenever I need to smile, I just watch this
I was at one of his live shows in 79 too- the arrow through the head, the “can I have a blue spot - pleeeease!” Etc . What an entertainer. A national treasure.
Saw him at his peak and live in 1978 performing King Tut and then he showed his short movie “The Absent Minded Waiter” for our senior prom at the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill NJ.
I remember going to see Tut in Seattle. The line was so long we decided to go and see this little sci-fi movie instead on the 60mm screen. If I can recall the movie was called STAR WARS 1977!
I was surprised to see so many negative comments about this... and then I saw they all came from one person. Just because you don't like this humor or get it, doesn't mean it's pathetic. The song is absurd, and catchy. No one should compare him to George Carlin, he's Steve Martin and his fans aren't sheeple. It's ignorant of you to throw stones in an attempt to be a so called non-conformist.
So growing up in the 90s early 2000s Steve Martin was a household name. My older brother would laugh and dance to this song, much to our family's amusement and delight. I remember asking if "King Tut was still alive", and hence began my true education on Egyptian history. All thanks to this song. Thank you Steve Martin, for caring about my education. I would have been an ignorant twerp otherwise.
I remember back when Steve Martin did this; I remember he first did the song on an episode of SNL. Shame he stopped doing stand-up, I miss seeing him do it. .
Can't blame him though. From what I understand stand up comedy is brutal. Coming up with material, working on the delivery, getting the audience to enjoy the performance, not to mention dealing with hecklers.
It is a shame, but from what I've seen, his bluegrass concerts are amazing. My mother and sister went to see him live in Pennsylvania and they loved every minute.
Yup. It is a treasure and I am fortunate, cuz I got to see this, when it first came out and it was on fire on all the channels, which ,we only had three channels, back in those days, but they still played this and he did it on Saturday night live, back when it was actually funny
OMG!!!!!!!! my mother sang and taught this song to me when i was a child. i never knew where she got it from until now. i used to do this dance when i was young and was getting changed, i would pull my shirt up over my head and leave it on my head like that so it looks like a headdress thing and dance and sing this song....LOLLLLLLLL.
Never new he was so good on the guitar!! I never get tired of hearing (seeing) this. His comedy is timeless!! He's up there're with the greatest of the greats. And to think he owes it all to the poor black family he was born into, wonderful parents.
I hadn't seen this since I was a kid and I'm laughing like he// all over again. You don't see as much physical comedy these days where the visuals crack you up just as much as the spoken words.
This is also from a bygone era when comedians were as big as rock stars, and their albums sold as well as anyone else out there. In fact, the Blues Brothers opened up this show (and recorded the "Briefcase Full Of Blues" album that night!). Just look at the size of that crowd just to see one guy!
On this day in 1978 {April 22nd} Steve Martin performed "King Tut" on the NBC-TV program 'Saturday Night Live'... Back in the late 70's / early 80's, I laughed at this man more than I had ever laughed at anyone before or since. He was a nut. I later found out that he was a writer on several shows that I had liked. My Aunt Bernice loved "The Jerk". I stumbled on that one while working out of town in Athens. Inhibited at the time to even be noticed by people, I was laughing out loud, sometimes even a little more than the other people, and I was sitting in the middle of the theatre, no one with me. That movie freed my spirit in a way that day. Thanks, Steve.
I grew up to this and had it on a 45 rpm record! King Tut on one side, Dueling Banjo's on the other side, and he was playing banjo on the AMA Country Music Awards tonight!

The real King Tut probably never imagined he would become a celebrity again 3,000 years later.
And especially through such an historically accurate song!
if only he'd known that they'd line up just to see him
He is so crazy. I love the king tut he does. I play this when I'm in a bad mood or had a bad day at work
