Humor that is relatable to everyone without being attackingly offensive to anyone is a dying art! Bless you Mr. Martin for helping all of us laugh at ourselves.
Don't worry.
Someone will find a way to be offended. 😉😊
@@trueaussie9230I’m not offended by the song… but I am offended by these comments
@@trueaussie9230 Unfortunately, yes. I'm a born again Christian, myself, and I thought the song was hilarious. Well written, well thought out and very clever. I remember (and miss) the days when pretty much anyone was fair game and only the overly sensitive "got offended." Now, sadly, it's very much different and "offense" has become a national pastime on all sides of the spectrum.
@@TheDoctor1225
👍 it seems 'offended' has become the default setting for 99% of people these days.
Certainly those born after 1980.
Fortunately some of us 'old codgers' still know how to laugh at life.
@@trueaussie9230 My dude, two months on and the single person out of the 1606 long comment chain to have been offended by anything is YOU, and it's over something entirely in your own head. My @s are off but your local priest may be able to help you with your demons instead.
My hat is off to anyone who can fit the word "existentialism" into a song and make it rhyme!
Absolutely Amazing‼️SO MUCH TALENT FOR ONE GUY!❤️ “Godless Existencialism” ... Way to go Steve! From Indianapolis, IN, USA ♥️M

right there with "Waring Blender"
With "He is risen," no less.
Steve Martin's not just a virtuoso banjo player and comedian. He also has a helluva voice.
I'm 34 and just finding out he plays the banjo?
Yay.
Have you ever seen him dance? He has a number with Gregory Hines back in the 1970s that will blow your mind!
Pitch and Range! This was a treat.
Ya, he nailed that high note.
@@Saints_ravenfortheRainbow do a search for Kermit the frog and Steve Martin. They play duelling banjos 🪕
Steve Martin is a brilliant man.
Can we just be in awe of the combination of clever lyrics, tight harmonies, and crazy modulations that make up this song?
Amen
That's some god given talent>>>>

If you want to go to hell you can.
Is it just me? How come no one said anything about the fantastic harmony!? This song had to have been hard to write, hard to sing, meter-wise, and still matches all the harmonies. That's talent.
It's not just you. I'm a very experienced harmony singer and am very picky. But I give this one a big thumbs up!
Well, no shit.
Bluegrass is all about the harmonies.
They have been doing this since they were babies besides that Steve would have only the best around him
yer absolutely right!
Can't believe how high Steve Martin can sing. That was awesome and hilarious!
I know, right?
That one surprised me. Lol First the G#/Ab. Then the final A#/Bb. He needs to write some more songs for his upper range.
He's even better straight!
@@billwhite9703
When was he gay?!
Means not being comedic 😊
In 2023, Steve Martin was 77. This means that he was 66 when he performed this song. His first child was born in 2012 when he was 66. After I watched this last night, I felt grateful that he has taken such good care of himself that he could do this. Thankful that he loves performing so much!
Please! 66 is the new 40! Stop saying people are old! You will be old one day too.
@@gailcathey5642
Turning 65 in... 5 days.
I feel great except for chronic pain, but I've had that since I turned 30, so...
Never ever smoked, eat a Mediterranean diet, drink a glass of wine with dinner, walk a lot.
I feel great!!!
And the high notes were spot on
You are funny!!!
This is proof that Steve Martin only hangs out with super talented people who really know how to harmonize and of course, Martin Short
😂😂😂
Ooh ouch! LOL
Nice.
The first time I saw Steve was on Saturday night live playing a banjo with an arrow through his head, singing his mega hit King Tut.
@@elvis2014 for that song he was wearing a Pharoah outfit and walking like an Egyptian.
Love Steve Martin. Total side note: The Steep Canyon Rangers are awesome humans. I taught in a tiny rural Alaskan village during lockdown and they linked up with us to help teach music to my kids. I have so much respect for them. Plus, they are all awesome musicians.
Wow!
Took 9 years for this to come around to me, well worth the wait! Better late than never for such a great song! I loved it!
This little old (atheist!) lady in Wales agrees!
I recommend "pretty little one" by Steve Martin and the steep canyon rangers
I’m really sorry I haven’t heard this sooner. I just love it. Bravo!!'
Steve Martin is a national treasure, and the Steep Canyon Rangers are great!
If I’d known of this song before I’d have arranged to have it played at my Father’s memorial service. ❤😢❤
awwwww
I'll make a note to my kids.
As an atheist I use to hang my head in shame for not having a song. Now I can walk proud with my head up at last. Hallelujah .

I played this for my super religious dad. He laughed and laughed! ❤️
As a Christian who loves almost all types of Christian songs, I loved this. And yes, we do have great songs too.
...I've known of Atheists who attend Church ...just for the Singing...
@@anarchorepublican5954 and I’ve known Christians who DON’T attend church, because of the singing! I love to sing, but I often wonder what it must be like for Christians who don’t. I feel sad for them.
Gospels and Revelation, as opposed to books with Paul the antikrist, explicitly deny the covenant and salvation to foreigners, spouses, and women like you, so no you’re not a Kristian but a Hæretic whether Petrist, papist, or Paulist.
@@anarchorepublican5954 Yeah.... check out Eric Fenby.... not sure if he made a thing of it but he definitely became Catholic because he liked the music and I think rather pissed off Delius who was very anti-religious.
@@anarchorepublican5954 We also attend for marraiges and funerals. We have religious friends and relatives who get married and who die, believe it or not.
How have I went through my life and missed this gem by Steve Marin? Brilliant! Just Brilliant!
What stunning harmonies. Worth the price of admission by itself.
I love that it was written with such humor and Witt in the southern quartet genre. Very smart.
Hey, Steve, I didn't know you could hit notes like that! Well done!
That was impressive!
I’ve only just found out! Truly very impressive!
It's a blessing! 🤪😝

I love Steve Martin
A genius of comedy
Excellent musician
Awesome writer
And a wild and crazy guy :)

Always love Steve Martin - talented on so many levels. I was thinking, "Did he forget us Catholics and our Chant?', but no, he got it in there - so fun!
I was waiting for Buddhists and Muslims, etc.. ;-)
That would have been nice
A classic is born. Again. It will be forever hilariously good.
First time I heard this. I love it and I 'm a believer.
Love this! Reminds me of listening to Primitive Baptists singing. No instruments and very harmonious. Excellent!
Steve Martin does it again!!! I’m Catholic and find it hilarious!!!
That anyone is a catholic is hilarious.
I'm Catholic too and it is hilarious Steve Martin does everything funny as hell, even when he sings and performs on stage
Great song from a brilliant dude and his amazing band!!
This is one of the greatest songs ever written. Not kidding. No hyperbole.
Tim Minchin: "Hold my beer."
I just found this. Awesome! Now I finally have a hymn too. I love the "he is always lower case".
That was wonderful! And Steve gets more handsome every year!

This was GREAT and YES! We did sing Gregorian Chant but no more 😢! What great talent!!❤
This is brilliant! Clever, funny lyrics; great harmony, arrangement, and voices. Bravo!
Watching nine years later and all I can say is, WORD!!!! 😂😂😂
That's great - reminds us of our common humanity and invites us all to laugh at ourselves, but not in a bad way.
We got us one now though!🤣
Besides being hilarious, gotta give him some serious credit for killing that high note!!!!🎤😮🎵
Pee-in-your-pants funny, never gets old. And so well performed, great vocals, great writing.
thank you Steve Martin you are a treasure in my heart....
This is a perfectly written song. Non-believers totally understand that this is a fun song that tells the truth. And believers totally understand that this is a fun song that tells the truth. It is a win win.
It's hilarious and sad at the same time.
Actually any song that isn't about religion is an atheist song.
@@VeeVeeVeeV I know, mind boggling isn't it.
@@craigs3056 By that criterion JS Bach's ( remember him - the german chap who wrote settings of the Matthew and John Passions, Cantatas for every sunday of the year several times over, the Mass in B minor, The Magnificat in D major and lots of motets and organ music, to name just some of his religious output) Coffee Cantata is an atheist work. Really?! Might it just be possible that not everything lines up for or against God, but that some pieces of music - even including songs that aren't religious - are neutral, or deal with other aspects of life? Pardon me for suggesting this, but might you be being just a touch closed minded? Oh, and perhaps a bit more dogmatic than is strictly necessary?

Atheists have rock and roll!!!
I'm an atheist and I think this was pretty fun.
you inspired me to transport your message into the German language at my living room birthday party. I once studied theology but then I left the job as a priest to become a blues guitarist. Actually, I'm working on my project "Songbook For Atheists", as well I'm spreading those messages in my books, author: "Didi van Frits".
Don’t forget Rush, just filled with songs of unbelief.
Take a listen to Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer's "Gentle Arms of Eden", best song about evolution I've ever heard. Also Mary Chapin Carpenter's "Mother, I Climbed".
Not as funny as this one, though!
